I come to the buffet because of the hot and sour soup alone. It's the best around. Combine that with the sheer variety of other delicious entrees, sides and desserts and even sushi, it makes it all well worth the price. Whenever I'm shopping at the Galleria, I usually drop down to have lunch here. Then I take home more of that delicious hot and sour soup. I don't dare forget or my husband won't speak to me. I love me a good buffet, I cannot deny that, nor does my expanding waistline. However, not all buffets are perfect. I was urged to come here by family as it was basically competition for another buffet one plaza over. Yes, Johnstown has a buffet problem. Upon entry to Main Moon it is very interesting. If you did not know this was a buffet for Chinese food and just walked in here you would think by just looking that this might be a diner. Maybe it was prior to the takeover by Main Moon? It took me a while to even be acknowledged to be seated. That could be because many Johnstowner find Main Moon a good place to stand around and get the gossip. Customers that were already dealt with and paid just stand around, blocking the way for anyone else to get service. Once they realized the world did, in fact, not revolve around them, I was able to be seated. When I was seated I felt like I was just thrown in an area that would be forgotten...and I kind of was. I was sat right next to what looked like was where they were rolling silverware. My table had no condiments, silverware, placemat, or anything on the table. Upon my first trip to the buffet I had to steal the things I needed from an unused table nearby, one that I assume I could have been sat at, but here we are. The food is what I expected from a Chinese buffet and what you find at any given one you would go to. What I really want to talk about here is the set up of the buffet. Who thought of this setup? It is the most haphazardly put together buffet I have ever gone to. The only area that is put together is the hibachi portion. Otherwise good luck finding what you want. They have items that would be considered a staple for Chinese cuisine hidden in other sections. I would not think to look between the fried dough and ice cream for wontons. I left here feeling like I should be rolled to the parking lot and punted to my house. Leaving here you get to leave with a memento that will remind you that you were here for the rest of the night. You will smell exactly like this restaurant until you shower and wash your clothes. read more

This place is great and has always been great. I have been coming since they opened and still do. They have a nice selection, polite and promote service, and very affordable. The hibachi grill is also nice. Fresh and cooked anyway you like it. I usually season myself, but the cook will do it for you, if you tell him what you like. So very disappointed in last nights dinner! Normally our food is VERY good; but last night was horrible. I ordered Chicken in Garlic Sauce and the chicken was rubbery and didn't even have the consistency of chicken. The broccoli was crunchy, just the way I like it. My husband had General Tso's Chicken and he said basically the same thing, what little chicken he could find was rubbery and had NO chicken taste and the same with my daughter's Shrimp & Broccoli. The white rice was so overcooked, you couldn't even tell it was rice. It just came out of the carton in one massive plop. Even my Vegetable Roll was not up to their normal standards. We choked down what we could and ended up having to throw most of it out. We order from there frequently, so last night might be a game changer, we'll see. read more

The food doesn't seem to be hot enough. I worry I will get sick when I eat from the buffet. That said, if you are careful to skip suspect items, and choose only items that are hot, the taste is great. The prices are good. This place could be great. They do have pretty good food, but the last time we were there, it was closer to closing time. I had a bad feeling we should not have gone. Towards the end of the night, at 8:30, the workers started standing around pacing around the Buffet, looking on their phones and just making it an uncomfortable experience. The one kitchen worker I saw him come out from the back twice and he was really digging in his nose. It wasn't just a quick pick or anything but he was really digging and walking around. This was totally disgusting and I think this was my last straw. I have seen bad things at this restaurant before. The manager that stands up front and rings everybody out, he goes and wraps silverware and doesn't bother to wash his hands after touching money. If you don't mind, boogers and uncleanliness, the food is pretty good! I am sorry, but if I have never seen what I have seen all throughout the past, I would probably give this place a 4/5 stars. It's such a shame. I can't believe they got such a great health record report. Well, restaurants, do know when the state will be in town, roughly, so I'm sure they were very prepared. The workers just seem gross, touching dirty plates, and then grabbing peoples drinks to refill them from other tables. They don't clean their hands in between gathering dishes and touching peoples glasses to refill. I would like to see how they act when the health inspectors are there when it comes to touching customers plates and cups. The last time I seen gross things, we didn't go there for many months. Generally speaking, I'm not a huge fan of buffets, but I do take exception to Main Moon. I find most buffets, not necessarily Chinese food buffets, to be bland and mushy. I've eaten at Main Moon more than a dozen times before initiating this review. Josh is always there and always friendly. I'm not sure he ever gets a day off! The food is consistently fresh and always tasty. There is a nice variety of both Chinese and American-style food, all of which is cooked well. We have gone to this restaurant regularly and have not had any problems before yesterday. When we walked in, there was no one at the "please let us seat you" sign. We were ready to just go in when a woman finally came to seat us. We explained to the woman seating us that because I have a disability, I needed to be as close to the food bar as possible. In the section that she was trying to send us to was in the back part of the the dining room and was far from the food bar. There were several tables that were available that were right next to the food bar. When we asked the hostess that we needed to sit close to the food bar as previously requested of the waitress She indicated she wanted to seat us toward the back of the restaurant. She told us that the tables that were so close to the buffet were for the staff only. As noted previously on visits, we had seen that they either sit there and eat and, put napkins around the silverware, and socialize. Our request to be seated was put to the man who runs the front desk and runs the cashier was completely came back to the salad and indicated that were to sit where shown- at the back of the restaurant. Their refusal to accommodate my need to be closer to the buffet was accompanied by the different staff members giggling and laughing as they spoke to each other only in Chinese. (It was painfully obvious that they were referring to me.) My family and I were grossly mistreated as far as service goes. The food is usually and dried look gross. There was food dropped at the salad bar and the different foods were sloppy and some of were outright mixed and poorly managed. I understand the guidelines of the different policies and procedures. This situation could have been handled very differently. I asked them if they were aware of the ADA, and they said "I don't know" repeatedly. Customer service is very poor and they apparently believe that it is okay to make fun of their customers and laugh about them while speaking Chinese to each other. This restaurant is definitely one to avoid. The food is marginal at best and the staff behavior is appalling . DO NOT GO HERE! read more

So I ordered 3 meals. I got home and had 1 correct meal, 1 incorrect meal and 1 meal missing. I called to report the mistake. The employee said that was his mistake and asked if I would come back for missing meal. I said "I guess if I want to eat I will." Upon arriving the meal wasn't ready and I had to wait 10 more minutes. He then gave me my missing meal and that was it. Didn't offer me a gift card or refund, so I asked for one. He said he can't and would have to call the manager. I asked him to do that for the inconvenience of driving 20 miles round trip for his mistake. After a lengthy conversation in Chinese so I couldn't understand what they were saying, was told that they would not give me anything. I asked him if they cared if I ever ate there again after many years of patronage. The manager said that he did not care if I ever ate there again. I have lived all over the USA and in Europe ... Main Moon is my favorite Chinese Restaurant of all time... I have NEVER had better, I look forward to eating there for lunch EVERY time that I come back to my home town for a visit. I love the hot & sour soup , the coconut chicken and the general tso's chicken. I've eaten at the Moon since the day it opened and I've had family and friends join me more times than I can count. We have never had a bad meal here - ever. In fact, I think I'd say the main moon is the best Chinese buffet restaurant in town, hands down. They have a wide range of foods, the classic Chinese stir fries of varying heat and ingredients, the best General Tso chicken in town and a variety of vegetable and meat combinations that I've tried over the years. They make a good hot and sour soup, good egg rolls, garlic green beans, stuffed mushrooms. They offer California roll sushi,salad, puddings, fresh fruit and ice cream for dessert as well as tea cakes of various types. I've never left thus place hungry. The staff has always been attentive and quick, the place clean and pleasant, the prices fair. I've had mixed success with the pick your food and they stir fry it on a big flat metal grill thingy. It's not the veg which is fresh and cut small for frying, nor is it the cooking process (just adding heat, duh). I think the reason I've never been thrilled with that method is that a lot of American Chinese food is soaked in sugary or thick sauces that give a lot of the flavor in a dish. This method, a lot lower in calories, just doesn't hold up to our expectations. A good choice for vegans, provided you really lay on the garlic or spices to give it some punch. I like the Moon and I give it high stars for consistently excellent food. read more

Yuck! The staff all walked around like zombies. No smiles at all. The Mongolian BBQ style portion of the restaurant turned my beautiful veggie stir fry into a dark brown pile of stuff. I asked for garlic sauce. I don't know what I got. It didn't tast good either. The buffet was typical and I didn't care for it. My two favorite Chinese dishes are hot and sour soup and crab rangoons. They were both ok, but not good. They were a lot of dishes, but most looked the same. They had a lot of shrimp and crab legs. Since when was shrimp and crab legs Oriental? My Girlfriend, My Step daughter, and I all decided to have lunch at Main Moon on scalp avenue one day....Little did we know our daughter was sick...after we got our plates, our daughter got sick.(not to a disgusting extent either, mainly just a little spit up).. My girlfriend took our daughter to the restroom and i proceeded to tell the for some reason American waitress we'd take our check. Becky was her name. So she hands me our check i walk up to pay it but there was No one there so i waited until someone FINALLY came and i paid them. (it wasn't their fault we had to leave early so its only fair that i paid the bill) After i paid i decided i'd go back tip the waitress and wait outside the restroom for my girlfriend and daughter... I decided to go towards the restroom first because my girlfriend was just walking out as i approached her, much to my surprise, I hear Becky and the other waitress making "gagging" sounds and actually making fun of us (thinking we are gone) I walk up to Becky and tell her " i was going to leave you a tip now i'm definitely not going to do that!!' I demanded my money back which i should have gotten double for this HORRIBLE experience... it upsets me that i even have to place one star on this review I'm highly considering legal action. read more

We use to like eating there on weekends cause my kids love the crab legs but the last two times we were there in the hour that we were there none were brought out but yet we paid the same price for the buffet. I don't understand why there's so many bad reviews on here. Yes, it's not the BEST Chinese food, but it's affordable for $7-8 for a lunch buffet. It's good food for what you're paying, and the quality is consistent. Only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 is because the service (depending on which waitress/waiter you get) leaves something to be desired. Some of them have such a blase attitude, and you'll get neither a "hello" or "thank you" from them.
