My wife and I decided to work with Gail for our wedding first dance based off a friend's recommendation and we couldn't be happier. She is an excellent teacher and a fantastic choreographer. Our mismatched dance backgrounds (I had no experience, while my wife had some) did not phase Gail. Over our six sessions, she was encouraging and thoughtful, keeping us on track with great coaching while also making sure to answer our questions and concerns every step of the way. Working with our original song choice and subsequent edits, she tied together sequences week after week that were challenging yet achievable, and even culminated in a lift that became one of our favorite photos from our wedding. Wow, Gail is a champion and a gem of a dance teacher in the city! Let's dive in: Affordability (5/5): We paid a little under $100/private class and it was 100% worthwhile. (We did four classes total.) Gail takes the time to choreograph the dance too which is not always a given with private dance lessons. Patience (5/5): Truly one of the most patient instructors we have come across. Took the time to teach each section slowly and accurately. We learned our dance in three sessions and Gail was pivotal in making this happen. In the final session she helped polish some areas to help elevate the dance to another level! My wife and I can't say enough good things about NY Wedding Dance. We worked with our instructor Stine to choreograph the first dance of our choice, and it was an absolute pleasure. She was incredibly helpful in walking us through the moves (even when we were starting from VERY little experience) and incorporating our feedback on stuff we'd hoped to include in our first dance. She was both educational and fun, and created a very supportive learning environment. We've since advised a few other couples to check this place out, and to our knowledge, they've all had great things to say, too. So much of wedding planning is an annoying slog that you have to keep some of it exciting and fun, and our sessions with NY Wedding Dance definitely were some of the best highlights of wedding prep in that regard. So, my fiancee at the time convinced me to do a first dance. I really didn't want to because of the time commitment and also the embarrassment. But, in the end, I am so glad we did it. We chose to go with Gail at NY Wedding Dance after receiving a glowing recommendation from our friends who used her for their wedding dance choreography, and we had the same amazing experience! We took 8 lessons in total and used the last few just for fine-tuning and additional practice so we would feel natural and comfortable on the wedding day. Absolutely fantastic! We could not have been more satisfied with our experience at NY Wedding Dance. First off, they were excellent with scheduling - coordinating by email and sending us reminders a few days before. They also let us schedule all our lessons outright upfront, which really made things easier to manage. Then, upon arrival, Gail could not have been better - she took the time to get to know us, understand what we were looking for and worked within our comfort/capability zone (beginner). She broke things down in a really easy to understand fashion and added moves incrementally through the lesson set. She kindly offered feedback and encouragement through the process, and helped us through our challenges with positioning, etc. Her attitude / approach and friendly demeanor made the lessons really enjoyable. Oh me oh my - boy did we have fun here! The stress of planning a wedding creeps up on even the most organized amongst us (yep that includes me) and if nothing else NYWD know how to take it all away. Well, let's give them credit where credit is due - not only do they do that but hey presto after ten lessons even the most left footed men out there will be able to waltz/boggie/jive like a pro. We worked with Joey - always smiling and with a new joke a lesson to relieve the tension and remind you why it is you're going through all the spreadsheets, vendor checks, etc in the first place. Our song was Wonderful World by Sam Cooke, initially I would have been happy with a plain old boring two step but Joey threw in twists, turns, a drop and slides galore. The takeaway: it isn't cheap but then neither were those private Pilates lessons or the floral table centers. With hindsight this warrants the same attention and budget planning you would give to one of the more obvious items on the wedding check list because the first dance (and the whole dance lesson experience) is something you'll both remember and treasure for years to come. read more

We combined two songs (Etta James's "At Last" and Barry White's "You're the First, the Last, My Everything") with different tempos and styles. Our guests loved the first dance.
