What a fabulous bellydance school! I'm so happy I found this. I don't know why I waited so long to study bellydance but I'm so glad I finally am doing it. The teachers are wonderful -- friendly, helpful, skilled, encouraging --- and they always make it fun! (Have you ever seen a bellydance video where no one smiles? Yukh. Not here! I wanted to learn how to belly dance for many years. So finally I did some research and found classes nearby my neighborhood. I feel so lucky to come across Salit classes. I've tried couple times to practice belly dance earlier in my life but didn't feel connected to the teacher and their technics. I fell in love with Salit from the very first class. I am ecstatic that I tried this school. I was really nervous to get back into the groove since I haven't danced for so long, but when I came into the studio all my butterflies went away. When I came in I happened to watch the beginners group and I was very impressed with how all the students were all in harmony together. The group was mixed with all ages and backgrounds, and the studio was large enough to fit almost 20 students. I got a very warm welcome in the intermediate group which is held tues and thurs at 7:30 for one hour. Salit has a beautiful smile and she is so patient and friendly. At first she showed me arm movements and how to keep my stance and posture (neutral stance) and then she showed us how to shimmey and do figure 8 exercises in various directions. She also helped us put all the steps together into a routine across the studio(yes you will get a little dizzy but she gave us awesome pointers on technique) . I also like that she gave us option of doing freestyle and to go over any specific exercises we were stuck on at the end of class. The choice of music was really great too it helped me master the moves better with the beats. I didnt see her use any props in the class but she definitely is knowledgeable on it. I also love that she offers the students to see her performances live in manhattan free of charge with her partner, it shows that she actually wants to socialize and make the class like a family . Oh and did i mention this class is a superb workout?! My legs thighs and core were on fire, this is the perfect way to get into shape for 2019. i cant wait to continue my lessons here! read more

I went to try out belly dancing a long time ago but my head was not there. Now, I went to Salit's class and had a great time. She is patient and methodical. It was not an overly large class so that you get lost and can correct your moves more easily. I would come back and hope to get a dance routine down. All the ladies in our class are super nice and supportive - we form a fun collective and are friendly with each other, creating an encouraging learning environment. Small classes which is great for learning! Great beginner/advanced beginner level classes. Classes are held in an old schoolhouse in the lower east side that is now full of galleries and workshops and theaters. It's very conveniently located near trains as well. I had a wonderful introductory lesson with Salit today. It was my first time trying bellydance so I wasn't sure if it would live up to the "fantasy" but Salit made me very comfortable and I was very glad I attended. Salit gives great cueing, corrections, and positive feedback. I found her positive attitude very welcoming toward a complete newbie (and one with many body image issues, as well). I was really excited that we even got to do some practice with chiffon veils! (unexpected, beautiful, and loads of fun) While the class was enjoyable and moved along quickly, I also felt like I benefited from a good workout for my arms. Small class size was an ABSOLUTE JOY and the LES location was very convenient to the train. I had a great time and definitely hope to join again soon. read more
