I love taking classes with the teachers from the Djoniba Dance Centre located within Peridance! They offer adult open classes in West African dance, Samba, Haitian, Cuban, etc. for regular people. The studio is spacious, the changing room and showers are clean, and the front desk staff are always friendly and helpful. You register for classes through the MindBody app and have the option of taking an in person class or joining online. Located on the first floor is a kiosk that sells beverages and snacks with a small sitting area so you can grab something and relax. It's a great place to come and get your dance fix. I was really disappointed with my experience at Peridance Center. From the moment I walked in, the smell from the bathrooms hit me! really unpleasant and off putting. The front desk staff weren't very welcoming either. I arrived early and just had a simple question, but was met with blank stares and a vibe like I was bothering them. The studio itself wasn't ideal for focus or rehearsal. You could hear everything happening in the adjacent studios!! There was no sound insulation whatsoever. so it was hard to stay in the zone during class. Overall, the energy felt off, and I definitely wouldn't book this space for my own classes or come back to rehearse. read more

I've come to Peridance Center a few times to see friends perform. The seats are bleacher-style inside the auditorium, blocking the door-- which is likely an asset, as it would block more of the light should audience members enter or exit for a bathroom break. The acoustics seem fine, and the lighting as well. Peridance Center always seems to attract amazing talent from all walks of life no matter your size, age, color, fitness level, or anything else. I love this dance studio! I danced ballet as a child and was looking for a place to renew my inner youth, and this was the place. They had a live piano player, which added to the real experience of an authentic house of dance. The instructors are highly knowledgeable and it feels like they just walked out of a rehearsal from the American Ballet Company. You can even buy a punch-card here so you can remember every class and not have to pay cash each time you show-up! Just whip out your American Express Card and pay in advance. As a professional dancer, this past year has been very challenging. I took more zoom dance classes than I can count! I was so thrilled that Peridance is offering limited in-person dance classes. I felt very safe the entire time. The instructions on how to get to the studio from the front desk was clear. They have a different stair case for entering and exiting to keep social distancing. Masks are required the entire time. I took a ballet classes yesterday with Nina Goldman, one of my favorite teachers! It was so great to be back in class and be able to dance in a studio. I much prefer this dance studio to BDC or steps because there is actually SPACE to DANCE. Personally I do a lot more ballet and sometimes jazz or contemporary and their classes have far less students and larger studios than BDC and Steps. I also very much appreciate the social environment of peridance, there's no cattiness, dancers here mind their own business. As someone who has no patience for dance classes being used as instagram video followers on behalf of the teacher or their star pupil, there isnt a lot of that in their ballet/jazz/contemp classes here which is a huge relief for me. On par with the likes of Ailey Extention and EXPG but with an even more extensive variety of classes from samba and hip hop to limon and ballet. Love the open schedule with classes that begins early and end late. The reality is I caught dance fever awhile ago and havnt been able to shake it...so I just shake it uptown, down and around, always on the lookout for what's good.... Dance studios are better than a gym in my opinion but I'm a cardio freak. Peridance in particular offers a work study option for y'all rich wif time but broke on dough. Lastly, in a mouthful- this spots got seriously amazing instructors, kind peer dance students and fun yet effective classes to stimulate the novice to the profesh dancer. I came here for a Brazilian Samba dance class and it was great. Well organized check-in desk and staff. However, it always helps to arrive in advance or have a pre-paid class pass since other people are all trying to do the same thing. I would suggest changing clothes ahead of time or arrive early because the locker room was extremely crowded when classes were ending and just before beginning. Again, arrive early or change ahead of time to skip the crowded locker room scene. The instructor - Danielle - was excellent, full of smiles and great energy. I learned some new, fast, speedy samba footwork. The class is fast pace, but a heck of a great challenge! Bring a towel, water bottle, and comfy clothes for dancing. After the class ended and I changed clothes, I walked around and observed other classes. There are so many wonderful and seriously talented instructors. Whatever you're interested in, they have plenty of options to pursue your dance interests. Very professional and well organized studio. read more

It's at very convenient location in the city. I love that they have many classes and great instructors. I have taken hiphop and salsa here. The teacher I had was Cebo. He is definitely a dancer with his own style. It's somewhat a mix of hiphop and house. He focuses on a lot of repetition in his beginner class. I think that really helps. Overall I really enjoy my time here every time. Friendly staff. Sometimes the dance studios location is a little confusing but you can always ask and people will be more than happy to assist you. read more

This is only for the children's ballet program. My daughter has been going for about three years, and she has truly loved the classes and the teachers. It's also a great way to meet kids outside of school and from the neighborhood. She has loved all of her teachers, especially Colleen. More importantly, as a parent - the admin staff is very good and organized in their communication and also when dealing with enrollment. The frenzy of signing up kids for after-school activities is always stressful, but the School at Peridance are extremely flexible, which allows both the ability for your child to find the right program, as well as the ease of finding the right schedule. They also have adult classes around the same time, which is great source of inspiration for my daughter, who loved to watch the many different kinds of dance. If I had time, I would have loved to have taken a class for myself! My only suggestion would be to open up an online store to order class-related items. The store in the lower level is small, with narrow hours of operations, and the area can get crowded. I would prefer to order things online and pick them up before or after class. read more

I have been coming to Peridance for the last 3 years after finding the place on a whim. I had just graduated and came to NYC for work but didn't want to lose dance in my life. I tried a few different studios but Peridance is the only place that I keep going back to. I looooooove taking Grant Chang's Jazz classes. He's a phenomenal teacher and picks out the best songs! You don't feel intimidated, just try your best, and you get an amazing workout. He teaches adv beg and intermediate on Wednesdays and Saturdays! I've been taking his classes for the last 3 years! Came over the weekend for a Salsa dance class....as I purchased a few classes from a deal on dealist.com. Of course I love the area..who doesn't love 14th st?!!.... Receptionists were very friendly in getting me registered quickly....I love the space......very light...airy....and clean!! Salsa class was great!! Class was divided into 2 - one side for extreme beginners and other side for beginners/advanced... they really take their time to explain the steps thoroughly...and go through it often....as we switch partners...only thing...is I wish we had music throughout the 1.5 class..... as we only heard it about 3x....for short amounts of time.... but this is understood...as I'm sure it would confuse new students....but I comprehend steps better with music.....just my personal preference. Peridance is my go-to dance studio since the location is way preferable to BDC. I went all the time when I lived in NYC, and my favourite class was always street jazz. I've taken loads of classes over the years, though, from the African dance class (fun but reeks of feet), to jazz, tap and modern. I was in town last week for some wedding planning, so I took an advanced beginner ballet class. The classes are all 90 minutes for ballet, so I took a class with a new teacher on Monday at 2 pm. The prices have gone up from what I remember, they're now $20/class which I thought was a bit overpriced. The class itself, though, was definitely mis-labeled. I've been taking ballet for the better part of 28 years, and this class felt far too advanced for me. There were about 6 professional dancers in there, and the class was clearly even challenging for them. There were about 5 of us in there whose heads were reeling from the level of difficulty. I felt ripped off. I hardly even got a workout since the teacher had to scale everything down for us 5. I actually felt bad about myself leaving the studio, so id recommend they either start actually labelling the classes more accurately (that was intermediate at the very least) or drop their prices to make it a more welcoming environment. read more

RK Davis's street jazz and hip hop classes are good and he gives good feedback. Lots of choreo and very challenging. Kat Wildish gives good feedback in her ballet classes to improve foundational technique. The combos at the end can be difficult. read more

Went for a beginner ballet class during NYC Dance Week and was impressed by their professionalism. So many students showed up (since it was a free class) but the teacher was able to accommodate many different levels of "beginners" with clear explanations and strategically placing the more experienced students at the ends of the barres. They were able to upgrade us to a larger studio last-minute, and having a live pianist was surprising (but great). I hadn't taken a proper ballet class in about 5 years, so it was an excellent 90-minute workout and I'll definitely be back for more when I have the time. With a student discount I'd only have to pay $16 (normal rate $18) per class, which is pretty on-par with other studios. A note about the facilities: small but well-kept dressing area downstairs, with lockers (bring your own lock) and restrooms. There's a cafe in the lobby and a dance supply mini-store as well, so everything's conveniently in one place. read more

I really wanted to love the salsa classes by the BAILA group but I did not enjoy my time and left early. The students were a mix of singles and couples but probably 80% couples. There were 2 groups with different instructors in the same room (level 1 and level 2). At times it was difficult to see/hear the instructor- understandable with such a small space. My issue was the CONSTANT partner switching. I am a tall-ish girl and my boyfriend is the correct dancing height for me. I did not pay money to constantly dance with strangers. Several of the couples were frustrated with the partner switching. It would be different if we danced with the person we came with and switched 1 or 2 times. We went around the room and danced with each person of the opposite sex MULTIPLE times. This made the steps difficult to learn. I would not recommend this class if you truly want to learn salsa or if you want to dance with your S.O. read more

I'm a dancer, so when it comes to any dance studio - I'm usually going to be a pretty big fan of it. I came here on a Wednesday night to take a class from the ever so popular Jermaine Browne. The class was AMAZING - exactly what I was looking for in hip hop and brought me back to my hair flipping femme roots which was perfect. The space was pretty perfect. It was a nice big room with lots of space and was all in all pretty great. The whole facility was pretty good - the front desk was very helpful and got my signed up in no time and all in all I had a great experience. When it comes to comparing it to BDC - it's not really fair to judge them side by side. BDC is a HUGE facility with TONS of people in all the classes (which you must admit is pretty overwhelming). Peridance is much more quaint, but I got one on one attention from the choreographer which was pretty awesome. Was very good Also took a packed street jazz class with Carlos mato and tried barre a Terre (floor barre) for the first time, which was.... interesting. Two floors with 5 studios. This place seemed significantly more chill than "Steps". It's roomy and clean and the "slow-intermediate" class I took on Sunday morning had like 7 people in it! I don't know how they survive on this but I'm not complaining! There was a piano in the room but the teacher used recorded music which was fine. The teacher (Badolato) was great and had a big personality and actually made me laugh quite a bit - that could have been cause I was giddy from being up since 5am and having traveled from Philadelphia that morning. Unlike Steps there were no giant pillars in the middle of the studio floor which is always nice. Since it was Sunday the store was closed, too bad. But the following Tuesday I got an awesome sweatshirt at Steps and spent a fortune at the flagship Capezio store (51st and Broadway) so I'm satisfied! read more

Marjory Smarth is my lady -- her house dance class here on Tuesday nights is an explosion of footwork and expression. It's short, coming in at 75 minutes, but you'll be gasping for air after powering through fast-paced drills and building up a combination. She's got one of the most amazing outlooks on life and dance I've ever encountered, so I make a point of taking her class whenever I'm visiting NYC from the Bay Area. The Toddler classes are superb. Both of my daughters have been taking ballet classes here for one and two years. Miss Colleen is an extraordinary teacher. I attribute my daughters' comfortableness/calmness to listen and follow thru to Miss Colleen. My oldest daughter loves participating in the May recital every year. It's cool that the recital is tied to a children's book. My youngest daughter can't wait to perform on stage. The instruction is awesome, I feel blessed that my daughters are receiving such professional ballet instruction. Miss Colleen treats each child with respect and is strict in a good healthy firm way. And my oldest daughter has always been in classes that the children are capable of being advanced, and so do the next level of techniques. The Capezio store in the basement is awesome, well stocked and affordable prices. Now and then they offer sales (a percentage off your purchase). My oldest daughter has been with a great group of girls; it's been nice to see everyone grow up together. And it's neat that my younger daughter takes a class with a lot of siblings. Peridance is a wonderful community to be apart of. Finally, the Peridance Cafe is a life saver for a family on the go! Delicious affordable snacks, treats & meals. After going to the Thursday Samba class, I did try the Saturday class, which is more suited for beginners. I have been going now for about a year. It's so much fun and Danielle is very attentive. It's structured basically the same as the open level class(just a bit slower so you can focus on perfection). Class consists of stretches, ab exercises and a dance warm up. The lesson is basically moving down the length of the room dancing the steps the teacher shows us. I see so many coming to class in street clothes. Perhaps thinking this is more a ballroom class? Make sure you have your workout attire because that's exactly what you're going to get! read more

I attended the Read-Dance-Play toddler/caregiver class at Peridance on Saturday morning with my 19 month old daughter, and we had a great time. It is a drop in class that costs $20, and lasts for about 45 minutes. The babies are given the chance to play in an "obstacle course" (tunnel, mats, balancing ropes, etc.), led in group dances, and there is even story time. Miss Colleen is very kind and gentle with the children. We will definitely return. read more

I love Peridance and MOST of the faculty. However, beware of certain heels classes. I have seen them taught by instructors wearing sneakers. There is technique involved in dancing in heels - that's just different from wearing sneakers. You can't teach that wearing sneakers. Other than that, Peridance is my go to studio in the city for contemporary, ballet, African, house, hip hop, Waacking, and voguing. I love the teachers and Peri staff. Peridance is a NYC institution! My kids went from when they were 3 years old {maybe 2} and the experience opened their eyes & lives to so much. My two daughters have continued to be in the creative world and thanks to Peridance have the most fantastic photos of their lifetime from the recitals.
