Took class from Elena Kunikova Friday at 11:45. What a beautiful spirit; she has high expectations of her students without being intimidating or discouraging, designs a gorgeous class with combinations that are complex enough to allow the advanced dancer a good workout but clear and controlled enough for an advanced beginner student to enjoy a good challenge within their reach. Elena was attentive and personal with each student, even those she had never met before, and gave corrections and comments for everyone's benefit. And to watch her, and her Russian styling, is absolutely breathtaking. I'm totally out of shape and technically challenged, but her choreography moves along with such ease and authenticity that even I could feel like I was dancing! The pianist was wonderful too. I've taken from many teachers at Steps over 40 years but I think this class was my favorite. read more

Taking a beginner class after many years absent from dance, this was the perfect step to get back into it. Nicole Ohr teaches their intro tap course and is a fantastic and encouraging instructor. While the physical studios and building are very dated, the instructor is just fantastic. Amazing corrections, attentive to all students, explains concepts in a way that is easy to visualize and implement. Difficulty level is appropriate as well. Finally, she makes class a lot of fun. We were there with our group of students from a high school dance team in Las Vegas and we all loved the environment and how comfortable everyone made us teachers and our students feel. It was very comfortable and everyone was very nice through out the whole studio. I took a Broadway tap class with Andrew Black my students took a Jazz class. I had not taken a tap class like that in 23 years he made me feel very comfortable along with all the students in the class. Thank you for a wonderful 1st dancw class experience in New York! Always good classes and teachers and so many good dancers for inspiration! I've been coming here for years when I am in town and always know my trip was worth it. And they make it very easy to take class virtually, which I haven't done, tho in class the teachers are also attentive to those online. The building is old and is really authentic dance class style. This happened a while ago but my husband took a dance class here and I'm still upset about how a situation with him getting injured was handled. His arm got dislocated (which for anyone that hasn't experienced it, it is extremely painful) and after a minute, he was able to get it back in on his own. Without missing a beat, the front desk lady ran to him with a liability form, but he was in too much pain so she SIGNED IT FOR HIM. Didn't even ask if he was OK. They got him an ice pack later, but shoving paperwork in someone's face is a horrible way to respond to them getting injured. Also, I'm pretty sure you're supposed to sign those things before an injury, not after. It feels like this studio cares more about not getting sued than it cares about their students wellbeing. Sidenote, he had the same thing happen to him at a different dance studio and they handled it completely differently. They took care of him and followed up over text to make sure he was all right. Never coming here again. read more

I am in Los Angeles and @ high risk for Covid, so I dance at home. Thankfully, I have a large living room with a wood floor. Having virtual classes at STEPS is a lifeline for me-Dance is my passion, and I've been at it my whole life. I am so grateful for your virtual classes-I can't even express how important they are to me. My studio in LA-Edge Performing Arts Center closed during Covid, and I can't attend in-person classes in LA anyway. I love steps and have been coming here for over 15 years. I pusposly live in the neighborhood so I can be close to the studio, my 2nd home there's a huge array of classes all day every day. All levels and ages. The only issue before COVID was checking into class. Sometimes there would be long lines and slow computers. But since check-in & payment is now online and required before class, it literally takes no time at all. Brilliant! If you're intimidated about trying out the studio or the classes don't be. Just give it a shot, you won't regret it. This is not a competitive atmosphere. It's a place to take risks, and hone your skills in a supportive environment. Highly recommend, and still hope to be dancing here when I am in my 80's read more

I am a professional dancer and have been taking class at Steps for a little over four years now. This is my favorite dance studio in the city! Whether you are a beginner or a professional, or any level in between, there is a class for you. They have a great variety of classes but my favorites to take are their ballet classes. However, I also take a lot of theater and tap classes at this studio. The teachers are top notch! I go to this studio about 4-5 days a week and have always had a good experience. If you are looking for a new dance studio to try, Steps is the one to go to! It is also very easy to get to and is right off of the 1/2/3 subway line. read more

The instructors are wonderful but the facility is terrible The ballet barres are falling apart, the studios and dressing rooms are out dated and dirty and the facilities are in desperate need of repair. The bathrooms aren't clean, the showers don't work, theres no hot water and no place to leave your belongings in a secure place so you need to haul all your things up and down the stairs and leave them on the floor of the dirty studios. There's no excuse for this in 2022! The classes are expensive so where's the money going? Dancers are taken advantage of as they historically have been! We deserve better! read more

But they really did a particularly amazing job during the pandemic of equipping the studio with the right technology to make the Zoom experience great. Mae in the office was super sweet and she helped secure a virtual spot for me( I was a few minutes past the closing window) for the Modern class -because I am old (LOL) and sometimes space out the three hour time difference ... But glad to be the age I am and got to grow up with the Beatles and Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. :-) Ha! I have been doing the Virtual Classes and they have saved my head. Teachers are top notch - in all categories and when there is an issue with microphones or other audio issues (it is tech after all ) , I just send a chat and it is resolved quickly! I am teacher specific and I prefer the ones I stick with but it is all personal taste and skill level. I love supporting places that care!! read more

I've had SUCH a great experience with online classes through Steps. I appreciate that the teachers check in on me to see how I am doing, offer corrections, and keep the energy of the class palpable even via Zoom. Karen Gayle (Horton) is phenomenal and I've really liked Sam Lobel's contemporary class as well. Emily and Taylor were exceptional teachers with a wealth of dance knowledge that they imparted in a supportive manner. Just in town for two days for our NYC friend Dini's surprise birthday party, staying at the Lucerne, my friend El and I (ex-ballerinas) wanted to fit in a ballet class on Saturday morning. Steps on Broadway has so many available classes 24/7 with an awesome selection of instructors. We decided on the 9:45am Int/Adv Ballet class with a substitute instructor. He turned out to be the famous (ex)NYC Ballet Principal Dancer and Broadway Star who of course taught a fabulous class. It was exhilarating with both the agile teacher and live pianist guiding us along to feel and accentuate the musicality of the movement. In addition, the front desk staff was so helpful and friendly. Everyone around appeared to be in a good mood. Overall, the Steps on Broadway experience made our trip even more special. read more

I am from out of state but I have long heard about Steps. When the pandemic hit and a lot of classes were going online, I thought it was a prime opportunity to take classes from the famed studio. The process of registering for a class and receiving the link was very smooth. The accompanied music was wonderful. The teacher was top-notched and professional. It was so helpful to have a dancer demonstrating the steps along the way. The streaming quality was really good. I'm not a dancer and am taking classes for enrichment, but to be able to do so, even virtually, amongst the professionals, is a great experience. I tried to sign up classes at my local dance studio, but either the schedule did not work, or the stream quality was really bad. So I'm just appreciative that Steps offers the virtual classes! The tap teach Nicole was awesome! She made our adult beginner class fun and understandable, and had us all doing a routine by the end of the first lesson and none of us had taken tap before! She also offered to send us videos and written instructions of what we did via email, gave us some interesting tidbits about tap-dance and a few tap dancers, has a great sense of humor, and truly seem to love what she was doing.
