    MEKA OKU aka KING MEKA
    Inga D.

Hello, I want to thank Broadway Dance Center for introducing me to an amazing Choreographer, MEKA OKU. KING MEKA OKU is the leading pioneer of AFROHOUSE/ KUDORO Worldwide and Founder of LLC @afrohouse_nyc. I have been taking every single class that he taught there, since I found out about him, and will continue to do so, every Sunday he will teach there. So far, I have taken 4 classes. With his professional approach I think I am getting better. He is very personable and wants his students to succeed, while having fun. Let's keep in mind that this is a workout. We are all getting in shape during his class, which is good for our health. Please, bring him every Sunday he is available! I will always return and say only good things about him and his class. Thank you. Respectfully, INGA DAGOSTINO

Love Love Love Broadway Dance Center! TIP #1: Beginner is NOT beginner in NYC! You have to read the level descriptions and look at reviews. I also highly recommend watching videos from the instructors social media or Youtube as this can give you a good sense of the difficulty level and style. This studio has a lot of professional dancers taking class here. I would recommend if you are new to dance or haven't danced in a long time to do the "Absolute Beginner Workshops," which are intensive courses that are offered periodically throughout the year in a variety of different styles. You can also try a few "Basic" level classes to see where you fall in terms of skill level. It may seem daunting at first, but don't compare yourself to other people, and keep coming because consistent practice is essential to improving! TIP #2: Download their app to your phone for faster check-in at the front desk! Dance Classes: Many of the classes are choreography based. There will be a warm-up/stretching section then you will learn a specific routine. - Chio (Beg/Adv Beg Jazz Funk): Love her remixed versions of popular songs! The choreo is quite challenging but always fun and a good workout. Don't be intimidated by the regulars who take her class multiple times per week. - Heather Riggs (Basic/Beg Jazz): This is more of a commercial jazz style so expect hair flips, sass, and attitude in the routines! There will be dancers that have some more technical training, but this is a great class to work on technique. - Honorable Mentions: Niki Saludez, Michael McCrary, Geheny Rivera, Courtney Sauls, and Q are all great instructors and highly recommend their classes as well! Overall: Great dance studio that offers tons of classes in different styles and levels!

I have only been to this studio for its master classes every now and then, but I always have a great time. The talent they bring in for every style of dance is incredible! So inspiring to watch classes before the one you're taking, and I love the variety they provide for every level. Check-in for classes is on the third floor. The layout of the place is a little confusing and they have many studios spread out among al the floors. So far, I've taken master classes with Yanis Marshall, Bobby Newberry, and Marina Ortega. The level of difficulty in these classes can be quite high, but the experience is always amazing as they are truly such incredible choreographers. The classes can be quite cramped due to the popularity of the instructors, but everyone is very welcoming and encouraging of each other. It's truly such a great community here, and I look forward to taking classes more regularly, but it can be tough when you have an unpredictable work schedule. It can be a little hard to know which classes to take as well, and with who. There are just so many classes that it can be a little overwhelming, but that's definitely not a bad thing. I look forward to coming back soon!

I agreed with other reviewers, that there are a handful of good classes and instructors. It took me a lot of time and money to find them. Some are plainly rude and expect you to dance like them in a beginner class. Some just like to show off their dance skills rather than teach. I love the class with Jamie Jackson and Shirlene Quigley. You can feel their passion and they really want to help you progress. $22 a class is not a lot if most of them goes to the instructors. I know it's not the case. And I don't know where my money goes because the bathroom is worst than the cheapest gym in the city. There's NO bathroom hooks. I remember it probably broke less than a year after this location opened. But they never bother to replace it. The people in the reception are hit and miss. Sometimes you get the nicest people in the world and don't know what they are doing, which is fine. The manager always know how to handle every transactions at the end. After all I don't think they got paid. They probably work for class credit. You just have to be patient. The worst is when you see some people who thinks they are better than everyone and are superstar. So you get the attitude and a slow transaction. I kept coming here because I love some of the teachers. If they are going to teach somewhere else with a better facility, I will leave BDC in a blink.

Not the best place for kids or international students. The owners lack ownership and much rather pretend that issues don't exist.

They have a schedule updated monthly, with separate sign-up options for both member and non-members. As a non member, I paid for the drop-in class, which was $25. The choreo is broken into several routines, so you learn them slowly in detail, and then piece them all together with the song incrementally. Dancing is as challenging for your brain as it is for your body, as you need to really exercise your memory and mind body coordination! The whole class went by super fast. The hallways of the studio is a bit tight so we had to shuffle around with the people that were coming out and the people that were waiting for the next class but we may do. The size of the class room is a decent size for the amount of people that showed up. The teacher was very informative and assisted with steps and would go over steps as well just for the people that may have missed steps. There was also apart in the class where you got to work with a partner that was fun you got to meet different people. This place is deserving of it's glowing reviews…read more I signed up for a Friday evening Beginner's hip hop class with Ryan who was covering for Rob that day. As someone with zero dance experience, I found the pace of the class too quick and had a hard time keeping up, but that's not anyone's fault. If you have two left feet like me, it can feel intimidating and honestly, discouraging because all the students are great dancers (seriously, have you seen the class videos?), but as Ryan said..practice makes perfect and you just have to keep at it. Despite the nerves, I'd come again because the classes would be a great way to get out of your comfort zone (if you're not a dancer and/or have stage fright) and build confidence. I also recommend dragging a friend to go with you if it's your first time. For you first timers, the building is right to Taco Bell (burritos after class, anyone? Haha) and staples is on the corner of the same block. classes are on the 4th floor. When you get into the building, show your ID to the front desk and they'll give you elevator access. Classes are on the 4th floor and you don't need to check in with them at the front desk. Once the class begins, the receptionist in your studio will check you in. There's a changing room and you leave your belongings in the studio. As for dress code, wear athleisure or something comfortable. I saw jeggings, shorts, tanks, leggings, and sweats. I'm not sure if all the classes are like this so don't take my word for it, but it begins with a 15-20 minute warmup, followed by 45-60 minutes of learning choreography, and ending with 10-15 minutes of "groups" where students are split up to have more room, followed by the opportunity to get your groove on with an even smaller group. Each group goes twice--once with the instructor guiding you, the second time without. You'll also be shuffling to different ends of the room so you can get closer if you need to. Also, each instructor chooses what they're teaching so you don't know the song choice beforehand. Now onto the actual class..Ryan is a great instructor. He breaks down all the steps clearly and at a reasonable pace. He'll repeat them as many times as you need. Again, I struggled because I take longer to learn, but despite that, I enjoyed the class. The room is small for a class with about 40 people but the high energy and positive vibes you'll get more than make up for it. Overall, I'd go again. FYI, If the class is full, you get put on the waitlist (max of up to 10 people can be on this list) and you'll be added to the class as people drop out. If you haven't heard by 11am the next day via email (cut off time to drop a class before late cancellation penalty), you can use that credit towards a different time unless you want to continue waiting to see if the class frees up.

One of the things that I really like about the hip hop classes is how much repetition is utilized to learn a choreographed routine. As a dancer of many years, 50% of the battle is memory and repetition of each mini-sequence really helps a new dancer solidfy not only the choreography but also master the details of the steps. All the instructors are extremely friendly and approachable, not necessarily so at other places. Not to mention, they do have their own different styles to accommodate different dancers' personalities. Check-in is always a smooth process with HoM staff. All the dancers that attend are super supportive and really nice as well. Nobody ever judges. I wish HoM was out here in the Bay now that I've moved. I've come to love my HoM family in my short time living in NYC. They've only added to the love that I now have for NY.
