I would give this place and our instructor, Liza, 100000 stars if I could! My husband and I have been taking dance lessons with Liza over a year now, starting as complete beginners. What initially started out as lessons for our first dance, quickly turned into our favorite date nights. The studio atmosphere is fun, clean, and spacious, and we genuinely have a blast every time we go. Our first dance was by far the best choreograph we've ever seen, and that's all thanks to our amazing instructor. We got married 3 months ago and people are still talking about it! We're still going to dance lessons post-wedding as it's turned into our favorite dance nights. We've formed an amazing connection with our instructor and look forward to our lessons every time. Shoutout to the full team at Fred Astaire and our incredible instructor Liza!!!!! read more

We loved working with Liza at Fred Astaire Dance Studios Downtown! I'm a professional dancer (not in ballroom), and my partner doesn't dance, so finding the right teacher felt tricky--but Liza nailed it. She choreographed a first dance that was elegant, fun, and perfectly balanced for both of us. She's such a talented dancer and an even better teacher--patient, creative, and so easy to work with. Our guests were blown away by our dance, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our wedding. Highly recommend Liza to anyone looking for a wedding dance that feels truly special! read more

Had a Valentine's Day dance lesson with my boyfriend, and let's just say--nerves turned into sweat and fun! The spacious studio was perfect, and Juliana, our instructor, made us feel like pros. We learned three dances, and by the end, I was dancing like nobody was watching (except my boyfriend, of course). He even said he'd go back, so I guess that's a win. If you're looking for a fun date night (or to sharpen up your moves), this is the place! read more

My husband and I took lessons at the 61 St location with Tisho and we cannot say enough good things! We had zero experience with any formal dancing and he transformed four left feet into two people who moved fluidly together. Tisho was patient, fun and incredibly talented with creating choreography to a song he had never heard before. Our wedding dance was a hit and we are so glad we took dance lessons to prepare! read more

My fiancé and I decided to get dance lessons in advance of our wedding to make our first dance more memorable than just the typical unrehearsed, slow dance you see at most weddings. Our instructor, Cipriani, was there for us at each of our 12 lessons and he was great. Neither of us had taken dance lessons before and we had no idea what we were doing, but Cipriani was incredibly helpful in mapping out our dance and fine tuning it in the last few lessons. By the time of our wedding, we had our dance completely memorized and the confidence we needed to nail it. Looking back on it, we're so happy we did it - the lessons were a fun weekly activity for us both and the compliments we got for our dance at the wedding made it all worth it. If you're looking for dance lessons before your wedding, we couldn't recommend Fred Astaire enough. read more

Where do I even begin?! Sveta and Artur at Fred Astaire Downtown pour their hearts into this studio and it shows in the quality of their staff, program, and events. I've been taking lessons here for over a year now, and my love for ballroom continues to grow under the thoughtful guidance of my insanely talented instructors, Temur and Artem. The entire team creates a warm and welcoming community that makes them the best studio in NYC for a reason!! I am so happy I took the leap to start lessons in 2023 and am so excited to watch this studio continue to grow and thrive!! read more

For two people who (1) have never taken dance lessons before, (2) were nervous about their first dance and (3) more than anything wanted to feel calm and comfortable on their wedding day - Olga helped make that possible. We were insanely busy with work leading up to our wedding, and Olga was more than happy to help work around our schedules so that we could come into the studio late at night for dance lessons. She was also so amazing to work with - patient, kind and, most of all, fun. We went in expecting to learn a few 'moves,' and we left with a fully orchestrated routine that paired up perfectly with our wedding song. Our dance was cool and exciting, and it really felt like Olga captured our chemistry and personalities in the dance that she crafted for us perfectly. We had so much fun throughout the process and really surprised ourselves - and our friends and family! When my husband lifted me into the air, not once but TWICE the crowd went absolutely wild! If you're thinking of taking dance lessons at Fred Astaire, you should 1000% do it! Best decision we've ever made! We still dance around our kitchen and run through our routine from time-to-time haha! My fiance and I decided to take dance lessons so that we wouldn't embarrass ourselves at our wedding. We thought we were going to learn a few dance moves and be on our merry way. But after our first intro class, we were already working on our choreographed routine. Katya was our instructor and she was amazing. We had no rhythm or coordination and she was able to polish us off with a presentable routine. The staff in general are very friendly and energetic. You can tell everyone is passionate with what they're doing. They also have occasional dance party nights. We weren't able to make them this time around but we had so much fun, we're considering taking other classes even after our wedding. If you wobble like a penguin and want to fix it, you can't go wrong with these guys. read more

Five stars is too little!!! Dancing at Fred Astaire is the highlight of me & my boyfriend's week. It's an activity that makes us smile ear to ear and got us both in shape! Most importantly, it strengthened our relationship & confidence on the dance floor. Our instructor Cipriani is INCREDIBLY talented and a PHENOMENAL teacher. As an accomplished dancer, he's able to fine tune our fundamental skills. But let's be real, he could do anything!!! Everyone at the studio is so kind. Fred Astaire has started to feel like home! 10 stars!!! read more

The best dance studio in Manhattan! I started taking lessons at Fred Astaire Downtown just a few months ago and not only do I feel like I've gained new dance skills but I've gained a family as well! Everyone at the studio is so talented, supportive and helpful. I first walked in without any prior dance training and I've found that all of the instructors are very patient and thorough, which I greatly appreciate! I love coming here; with every lesson you leave happier than when you walked in! read more

Around four months before our wedding, my now wife and I reached out to the downtown Fred Astaire studio for an introductory first dance class which may have been the best decision we made throughout the whole wedding planning process! Our instructor, Katya, walked us through the whole process and gave us confidence that we would be able to wow our family and friends with a choreographed first dance - even though neither of us really had any prior experience. Before leaving, Katya performed a preview dance set to our song with one of the other instructors that was extremely impressive. Over the next few months, Katya taught us our personalized waltz-style dance in sections with each class building on the last. She definitely challenged us to step outside our comfort zone to learn the beautiful routine that we could tell she spent a lot of time and effort on. Each step, lift, spin, and dip flowed perfectly with our song and by our last class, we felt like we could perform the dance in our sleep. On our wedding day, our guests were blown away by our dance which seemed to energize the whole room. The dance floor was packed from the moment we finished our dance and throughout the night. We want to thank Katya and all the other downtown studio instructors for preparing us so well for our special day. The whole staff is so friendly, encouraging, and passionate about sharing and teaching dance with everyone that walks in the studio. If you're considering taking lessons for your first dance, just DO IT! And look no further than right here! read more

Whether you want to learn a particular kind of social dance, are preparing for an event or a wedding or just want to move, the team of professional, knowledgeable and kind instructors will guide you. We had an amazing experience with Fred Astaire downtown--thank you to Tanya and her crew!! My now-husband and I are total dance novices, so he insisted on taking lessons for the first dance for our wedding. Because of his recent recovery from a major back surgery, we were super limited in time and only had 2 weeks to prep our dance number! Tanya and her team were super patient with us and coached us into a beautifully choreographed routine for our first dance as newlyweds. While our execution was perfectly imperfect--I blame the champagne, husband blames my long wedding dress ;)--we had a perfectly wonderful time, both before and during. Even now on our Hawaiian honeymoon, we are showing off our dance moves, like last night at Tahiti Nui in Kauai :). Each of the 8 sessions we crammed into two weeks (!!) honestly was like couples' therapy and gave us some reprieve from the stressors of wedding planning. We have a few lessons leftover and will definitely be putting them to use!! Thank you Fred Astaire Dance Studio!! read more

I think I can count on one hand the number of times that I have left an online review, but the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in downtown Manhattan is well worth it. My fiancé and I have been taking lessons with Nino for over a month now and have had an absolutely wonderful experience. Nino has gone above and beyond just teaching us the normal steps, creating a highly individualized routine that is choreographed to a portion of our first dance song that he cut himself. Additionally, Anya (not sure if I am spelling her name correctly), the studio manager, has spent a significant amount of time with us, demonstrating the routine with Nino to help illustrate the steps. Between the two of them, they create a fun yet sophisticated atmosphere and have helped our dance skills to come a long way. I can't recommend them highly enough! read more

This is a rare find. I came to the studio a few months ago looking for tango class without knowing it is a ballroom dance studio. But all the instructors are superb, very knowledgeable, patient, professional and skillful. I ended up learning both smooth dances and Argentine tango with multiple instructors, especially Artum and Nikita. The whole studio feels like a warm and supportive community. It is a true pleasure to learn how to dance with these passionate, caring people. Strongly recommend to anyone, with or without precious dancing experience. read more

This is by far the best dancing experience I have ever had! This dance studio is awesome!! The space is average sized for a dance studio, though perhaps ao the shorter end for a ballroom studio. As someone with a Lindy and WCS background, this did not bother me. The floors are great, very smooth! The teachers were amazing! They had great energy, were very patient, and were so friendly!! I will definitely return read more

We were fortunate enough to get paired up with Goran. He is an absolute pleasure to work with! Every single lesson is fun, engaging, and we come away learning something new every time. My girlfriend and I signed up for a package of classes to get better at dancing (general social dancing). We're both beginners and were intimidated at the prospect of learning dance because there are so many varieties, but we've come a long way in just five sessions and are looking forward to continuing. Goran is a great dancing partner and teacher, and we highly recommend the studio. read more

This was a surprise for my friend and we are both beginners. I paid for a private lesson. The instructor was nice and kept it a a slow pace so that we could practice. She was also kind enough to bring us water in little paper cups which unfortunately dripped on the floor. We were catching on nicely, when another couple came into our dance rehearsal space and loud music was played for their dance. I asked the instructor if we could complete our lesson in another empty room on the other side of the studio and she was told no by the owner. Listening to two instructors speaking at the same time and hearing two different songs at the same time was very confusing and we had difficulty following the instruction due to the distractions. I slipped and fell on the water on the floor and took my friend down with me. Our instructor did ask if I was OK and I was very embarrassed. Neither of us got much out of the instruction after the other couple started dancing and it was hard to practice while we had to listen to the other music. At the end of our lesson they tried to encourage us to come back to take more lessons. No one called to check on how I was doing after a very nasty fall straight on my tailbone. If you are paying for a "private " lesson please know that at this studio, it is not private. read more

I came here for a Yelp event and it was a wonderfully, fun evening! The owners and instructors were unbelievably patient with guests of all levels of ability. At the end of the evening 2 of the instructors performed a spectacular dance routine for us. I am definitely interested in returning for some standard dance lessons. read more

This is the best dance studio I've ever been to. The instructors are extremely patient and knowledgeable when it comes to effectively teaching newcomers to dance. The two instructors I've worked with are Artur and Goran. They are both excellent and bring a different emphasis to their teaching which provides a well-rounded experience. The two couples who own the studio have successfully created a warm and inviting environment. It seems there is always something going on at the studio and it's a happy, fun place to be. Honestly, you will quickly feel like a part of the Fred Astaire Downtown family once you join. It is unusual to find such a welcoming dance studio let alone in New York City. The fee includes private instruction, group dance classes as well as parties, which is unusual as most dance studios charge separately for these - so you get a great value for the cost. Whether you are considering dance lessons because you are getting married or looking to pursue an exciting new passion, I cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

Long overdue review. My fiance and I have two left feet. Leading up to the wedding, we didn't want to end up waddling awkwardly through our first dance. My wife and I wanted our first dance at our wedding to be memorable, and after reading reviews for many studios, we decided to go to Fred Astaire for help. They really delivered! We came in with almost no experience, and in only six lessons, our amazing instructor Katya taught us the fundamentals, choreographed a routine to the song we chose, and helped us perfect it and make it our own. She made sure we were always comfortable and having fun, and spent a lot of time outside of the sessions choreographing, documenting, and adjusting the routine to our liking. We performed our first dance to many cheers from the wedding guests as we waltzed across the floor, lifted high, and dipped low, and we've continued to receive compliments from our guests for weeks after our wedding. The studio itself and the other instructors are great as well! The space is very nice, and everyone is welcoming, friendly, and supportive. There were students of all ages and abilities there, and it was easy to see that all of them were having a great time while honing their skills. Whether you're beginners looking for a first wedding dance routine or experienced dancers looking to take your craft to the next level, Fred Astaire is definitely worth checking out! read more

About 2 months before our wedding my (now) wife and I started searching for dance lessons. We attended a first class at Fred Astaire and were instructed by Katya. Although both of us were new to dancing, Katya was able to train us on the basics, put together a wedding dance program (sync'd with our wedding song), and get us fully prepared for the wedding. We did not tell anyone about the dance before hand and it was the biggest hit amongst our parents are friends. Single-handedly one of the best decisions we made throughout the entire wedding process was taking lessons at Fred Astaire. On top of wedding dance preparation, Katya and the team were very welcoming, understanding we were going outside of our comfort zone.
