As a long-time dancer, I always seek for very professional ballet class. It's a gift to meet Tiekka and joined her class every Wednesday night. I'm a perfectionist, so it's a nature of mine to be very picky when it comes to ballet class (I've tried so many in Manhattan but...). After the first one with her I can tell, she's so wonderful and professional and make the class well-organized. She put her heart into it, and it worth the time and paying. Every class I make progress. Tips from her are extremely helpful that in my weekend classes teacher can tell the difference. This is amazing!!! This place is highly recommend. And I'd like to add several points brought up by others: 1. 5th FL Yes, you need to walk all the way to 5F since there's no elevator. But 5 floors can't be a big deal to a dancer unless having injuries - If you are, better look for sth else till become strong enough to do ballet. 2. Neighborhood It's in a safe, pleasant neighborhood along Broadway St. Chinatown is large. Also as a common sense, not every place is dirty - There are a lot of "hidden treasures" around this area. Plus I have no problem walking along the street after class. 3. Classroom Having experienced a number of doom, slippery, compact rooms I really like this one: High ceilings, plenty of bare space, large mirrors, and wide windows with beautiful night view. Floor's nice, too, good for flat shoes, pointe shoes, and also socks. The best part is the atmosphere. Other than Tiekka is so enthusiastic and always selects the best music, everyone is friendly. I used to believe an extreme and intense workout was necessary to get the physique I wanted until I found Everyday Ballet. I LOVE Everyday Ballet! From day one after trying it out via ClassPass- I was hooked. Although I kept my ClassPass membership to do other things (boxing, HITT, etc.) because I was nervous, I wouldn't stay in shape if I only did ballet. WELL, I WAS WRONG! I learned the more ballet you do, the more it works for you! I had an emergency surgery that required me to be off from all workouts for six weeks. When I was ready to exercise, my body was too fragile to take on anything that strained my body. My husband suggested only doing ballet for a month until I was back on my feet. Fast forward three months, and I'm only doing Everyday Ballet, and I'm in the BEST shape of my life. The best part is I love being there. I never have the tread of getting in the right mental place to go because it's so fun. Tiekka, the other instructors, they all have such a great passion for dance. You see it in their smiles and how they engage with the class. My only regret is I didn't become an unlimited ballet student sooner. GO! Get off Classpass and go 3-4 times a week, and you will be amazed by how you feel, physically, mentally, and spiritually. Not having taken much dance until I was 34 years old, I never took the bare bones basics that kids get when they start dancing at 4 yrs old. I have just gone to class, and mimicked teachers and other dancers as best I could, and in the process got really hooked on literally every kind of dance. I started with hip hop, and gradually worked my way to the other end of the spectrum to ballet. The basic adult ballet classes I've taken are always HUGE and are so aloof. The way Tiekka explain things helps it all "click" in my brain: pole through the pelvis, gingerbread cookie, narrow hallway and "thutt" are just a few examples of that. And ballet pencil! My tense claws are slowly turning into dancing hands. She really watches and corrects each of us in class, which is great. I've generally become more in tune with each part of my body, and can release and create tension in whole new places. Last class I took, I found tension in my eye sockets, which made me laugh out loud, because I never think about my eye sockets!! This general awareness has helped me in all dance classes. My feet have gotten a lot stronger, so that most pain that I used to have in my heels and arches (aside from the good sore feeling the day after class) is disappearing. Having my shoulders down and my chest open more during the day has also lessened pain in my neck and shoulders. I took an all levels ballet class just now, and was able to enjoy the choreography more because I didn't have to think about body position as much. It was awesome! This class is the best! read more

Sorry to say it but I was disgusted by this studio. It was a fifth floor walkup in Chinatown, and the studio itself was dirty and smelled terrible. To make matters worse, there were no yoga mats so during the warmup we had to lie down on the dirty floor. Also keep in mind that there is no individualized attention, so don't expect any hands-on adjustments or corrections, and you could very well damage your joints. read more

I love this place. Literally writing this because train service is wrecked today and I can't make it to class and I'm mourning. Tiekka and Kara are amazing instructors. You will absolutely get a workout in their classes, which is reason enough to attend, but on top of that you'll be walking out taller, with better balance and core strength. And you know what else? You'll actually learn some ballet. I started attending Everyday Ballet because I had taken a series of Adult Beginner Ballet classes and was discouraged with my progress. I thought I would give them a shot since they emphasized the traditional aspect of barre the most and I'm so happy I did. Class at Everyday Ballet is not only more approachable but easier to memorize. The follow along method seems intimidating at first, but down the line you end up working so much faster and surprising yourself, as instructors mix up the routines to keep things challenging and fun. You're also corrected and encouraged in such positive ways. Let's be real, part of surviving ballet (or any exercise class in general) and improving is learning to be comfortable with failure and embarrassment. That's not a problem here. Beginners never feel like they're holding the class back and instructors are always, always correcting in ways that will keep you motivated, never chastised. You will never be made to feel ungraceful by the people around you here. (If you're still intimidated by barre here are some facts about me: I have scoliosis, a desk job, anxiety, and I would ALWAYS rather be reading comic books or in front of a computer than anywhere else. I still love barre. Batman would totally do barre.) What else? There's also such a good balance, I feel, to these classes. Just enough time stretching, at the barre, and on the floor. I also wish I lived closer to their Chinatown location. The space is clean, charming, and functional. I'm always skeptical of locations with too many props. You really don't need much for barre except a bar to hold onto, some sensible socks or ballet shoes, and your body. read more

Everyday Ballet is important if you are serious about fitness and living fully. I've been through every fitness craze in NYC for the last 20 years, Everyday Ballet is a permanent keeper in my fitness arsenal. When my body schlumps, so does my mind. Even though committing the time and effort can seem a chore, it's better than the alternative of couch potato body and dull mind. Tiekka is a beautiful dancer and an inspirational avatar. She encourages all her clients generously! Ie: I had never danced and am awkward w choreography but now I feel I could be swan-like and that's new to me! The hour is never long with her well paced sequences. Definitely come to class on time because the opening floor stretches sequence is deceivingly simple but so effective at destressing the spine!!! I love the "big" feeling I get when I finish each class. I feel aligned in the body and mentally I can do anything. As someone who's been going to Tiekka's class for almost a year, I continue to look forward to each class and fine tuning my technique and feeling more connected to my body which feeds my self esteem. I love taking class also as a counter part to my other fitness regime. While other excercise contract muscles, EDB elongates and aligns, conditioning the body for more sport and more living. The reward of continued practice is taking the technique into the physical demands of everyday city living, be it carrying heavy bags and getting around town, or growing taller with each stride when I scooter.
