There seem to be a good variety of classes and I was excited to take this morning one. I was greeted warmly by the instructor who had me fill out a waiver, and showed me the cubbies where I could store my belongings and the free water station. I grew to feel even more welcomed, just being in the space as she was so friendly, and the aesthetics were very warm, lit by the yellow neon lights. I also noticed a kids play area which is a thoughtful touch. The studio itself was beautiful with a large mirror and windows for plenty of natural light. There were small cork blocks, 3lb weights, Pilates circles, and stretching straps available. The class moved rhythmically, with the instructor clearly demoing each move and sequence then going around the room to encourage and adjust. It was such a relaxing, yet engaging way to start my day, especially paired with afro beats like Kaytranada and ALUNA in the background. Afterwards, we could spray and clean our props used. Mats were free my first time but I believe are for rent afterwards so bring your own and come try a class here!

It's high time I wrote a review for the place that's been bringing me much unexpected joy the past…read more6-ish months. Last year, around Memorial Day, I was in DC with my family when we stumbled across one of those outdoor events with folks happily dancing Bachata and Salsa. My friend pushed me to join in and learn, but I froze, chickened out, and wistfully walked away. Two months later, I decided to go for Bachata lessons, and went with Nieves studio based on reviews, multiple locations and scheduling, and a ridiculously sweet Groupon deal that you'd be a fool not to take advantage of if you come here. It is difficult not to get hooked from the first class. The instructors are a major highlight here; they LOVE dance and they OOZE passion and expertise. And they are SO FUNNY. I find myself gleefully giggling at their quips throughout class; it makes for such a happy, upbeat learning environment. Perhaps this delightful contagion spreads throughout the room because it's largely good vibes in the crowd. Most are here to happily learn, and it's so refreshing to mess up and laugh together without judgment as we all aim for the common goal of nailing the routine of the day. I have met so many friendly and awesome people here. They also have a practice social every Wednesday, where I quickly learned that though I came here for Bachata, about 60% of the social is SALSA MUSIC. It didn't take long before I grew tired of having to sit out half the social and began taking Salsa classes as well, the one dance I thought I'd NEVER be able to learn. But the teachers do an awesome job of programming muscle memory and breaking down steps to drill them into your body. While I initially started out taking 1 class per week, I ramped that up real quick when I realized mad students come 4-5 times a week, and I see why! It does require investment and dedication if you want to progress at a satisfactory level, but it's fun and you look forward to it. I get the unlimited pass and frequent the Manhattan and Brooklyn locations. Also, be prepared to end classes with your heart pumping and face sweaty; I quickly expanded my "dance wardrobe" to have a multitude of athleisure fits, because I don't know HOW some folks do this in jeans, bless them. Dress for comfort. I now devote 3-4 nights a week to Nieves classes, and it's carved such a significant place in my life currently that I wonder what the hell I was doing with my time before this. But these classes give me life, and a feeling of euphoria after. Sharing a hobby with others who love dance as well, the physical, mental and social health benefits, good vibes, and the challenge of pushing yourself to learn new things slides perfectly into my lifestyle like a puzzle piece I never knew was missing. So if you're looking to get started on your Latin dance journey as a beginner, this studio is perfect. Oh yeah, and they got those GOOD mints too at the front desk; those melt-in-your-mouth dinner mints you were always snatching out of the glass bowl at old people's houses as a kid. ;) I hope Wil (the owner) doesn't switch the mints lol.

Generally, the studio seems like a nice neighborhood dance studio for kids who like dance as a hobby. My instructor teaches a preteen ballet class before jazz, and the students seem nice and happy. I've met the owner, and I haven't seen her teach, but she did seem friendly and dedicated. Mostly, I wanted to alert people to the existence of the jazz class. Bill is a great teacher: he takes your development seriously, but creates an environment in which you're comfortable trying new things. And he has some great stories. The class itself is a good workout, and for combinations, Bill's choreography is accessible, but really stylish, so beginners can learn the same things as everyone else and look cool, and advanced students can push to get the lines and pacing exactly right and feel challenged while still having fun. The class size thus far has been TINY, so you have room to move, and you don't feel weird asking questions.

I started coming to her YBB class at Heartbeat House about a year and a half ago, and right away, I fell in love with the atmosphere she created--it wasn't just about working out, but also about spirituality, community, and feeling good in our own skin. Each class begins with time for students to share good news or ask for support, which immediately sets the tone for a different kind of workout experience and brings us closer together. From there, we do some Kundalini yoga to get our energy flowing, set an intention, and then start dancing! Kristen always introduces herself to new students and lets them know that class is totally non-competitive, which I think is a big part of why even the less experienced among us feel comfortable really going for it. This past weekend, I had a private birthday class with Kristen, and it was an amazing experience. Kristen was so easy to work with: she answered all my questions quickly, encouraged requests for favorite moves, and let me create my own playlist. One of the main reasons I wanted to do a YBB class for my birthday was because I wanted to bring together my different groups of friends and loved ones (from 20-somethings to my 50-something parents) but worried that they wouldn't know what to say to each other. Dance seemed like the perfect bonding experience, and it really was! I was so impressed by how kind Kristen was to all the people I brought to the class, and how she seemed to adjust her moves depending on how lost or tired they seemed. Everyone told me what a great time they had and how much they loved Kristen for her dance skills and her generosity. What surprised me most about the class was how much Kristen customized it to fit me, and how much celebration of me there was, from having people write messages to me during the intention-setting part of class to having everyone dance in a circle around me during the end of the cardio part. I'm kind of shy and not great at being the center of attention, but it was really touching to look around at my friends and family and just let myself soak up the love. It was so sweet of Kristen to give me that gift. Long story short, Kristen is AMAZING! Her class will make you feel pretty awesome.

NO! I WAS WRONG AND IT WAS THE BEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!!! Kristen's class feels like going to a club and dancing all your stress out with your friends for hours (its actually like 1.5 hours) but you didn't have to buys crappy drinks with Red Bull to get the dance frenzy going. This class is great cardio. For my BFF's bachelorette party, all the bridesmaids went a YBB/ DISKQUO to get the party started! (Party ended with my face in some pumpkin flavored waffles, so it all balanced out) Going to a dance class sounds intimidating... But I have followed Kristen two three studios. Why? Because the moves are very easy to follow and you kinds just lose yourself. Also, no one in the class is a mini Baryshnikov, so I extol you... GO!!!! DANCE WITH THE SPIRIT OF MICHAEL FLATLY INSIDE YOU!* GET RID OF YOUR BLAHS! GET YOUR DANCE! ON DANCE! The vibe was weird from the moment I stepped onto the roof. There was man sitting on the edge of the front desk with my yoga instructor and it wasn't clear if he was an employee of Cosmic or the hostel; he was smoking a blunt and kept talking about how chill the vibe was but didn't make me feel chill. It wasn't a real conversation, he kept telling me to relax, to look at all the people and see how relaxed they were, and every time I tried to speak he would talk over me with more stoned nonsense. I just wanted to check in, so I put my phone onto the table and made extended eye contact with the woman instructor. She asked for my name and email, which I did NOT want to give with this weird rando hovering close enough to touch me. I smiled and held up my phone, and she asked again. Great looking out. I reluctantly gave my info, took a yoga mat as far from anyone as possible, and got myself set up. I got up to use the bathroom, and the same man asked, "Leaving already?! Where you goin?!" To the bathroom dude, I'm going to empty my bladder, please leave me alone. The yoga area is separated from the lounge area for hostel guests, and during the class it became clear he wasn't an employee of Cosmic, but just a random dude who decided to insert himself into the class and the instructor wasn't able to control him. He was dancing in the lounge section by himself, periodically yelling things like, "Release the dragon!" It was annoying and out of place. The instructor started the class with "Well now that summer is almost over" and the audible grown from the people there facing another COVID winter with new mask and vaccine mandates was enough to make her backtrack and say, "We're at the height summer". Don't start a class with negativity like that. As for the yoga itself, the sound system they used had some feedback and quality issues, the roof isn't flat but has lumps and curves that make lying flat or balancing on one foot extremely challenging. The instructor seemed like she was still getting her sea (roof?) legs with her routine, direction, and confidence, which I don't mind, everyone starts somewhere and she was making an effort, that's what counts to me. What was less comfortable was encouraging people to video and photograph and tag the gym on social media during the class. On the one hand, this is how businesses get promoted. On the other, I don't want dudes getting up to take "promotional videos" of my downward dog that I didn't consent to. Also, can we please put the phones away for a YOGA CLASS, if no where else, and unplug during this time? Maybe the biggest disappointment besides the creeper was the fact that they didn't schedule their class to coordinate with the sunset, the surrounding buildings block it. We had 15 minutes of sun before it set behind the buildings and a chilly shadow descended on the roof. So.....this wasn't a sunset yoga class, this was a post-sunset/twilight yoga class. Not what I would have signed up for. I'm giving three stars only because this is not a review for the venue itself, they had to work with the hostel who didn't build their roof for yoga and who don't have control over what their guests do (if the dude was even a guest, I really don't know). But I really hated my experience.

From October 2020 to December 2024, I was a member of Crunch Rochdale, which is the closest…read morelocation to where I live. Long story short, some of the people there got on my last nerve. They hogged the machines and treated the gym like a nightclub. In December 2024, I stopped going there. Crunch has two types of gyms: Signature clubs and non-Signature clubs. Signature clubs charge five times the monthly fees as non-Signature clubs, even though there's little difference between the two (it's not like your muscles magically grow faster at a Signature club). After the Rochdale debacle, I looked to join a non-Signature club at a location close to Manhattan and near a subway station. I chose Crunch Greenpoint. At Crunch Greenpoint, the people are friendly, the gym is fairly clean, and no one hogs machines. There are plenty of machines that will help you attain your goals- whether it's to get stronger, get toned, run faster, or lose weight. Overall, I recommend Crunch Greenpoint. With that said, it has quite a few flaws. The gym isn't ADA compliant. There's one rickety elevator that goes from the main fitness room to the basement. It does not go all the way to the entrance of the gym. This isn't an issue for 90% of the people who regularly go to the gym. However, there are people who work out despite having mobility issues due to an injury or a physical disability. I also dislike the layout of the gym. The gym is basically split into two floors. The treadmills, ellipticals, and most of the other machines are on the main floor. The bench press, smith machine, heavy weights, and group fitness room are in the basement. It's a pain in the ass having to go from the main room to the basement (and vice versa) to complete my workout. Also, unlike every other Crunch that I've been to, there's no water bottle refill station (there are fountains, but I'm not comfortable using them to refill my water bottle since people put their mouths near the spout). On that note, I look forward to my next workout at Crunch Greenpoint.

I've been a member of Crunch Greenpoint for years, and I never thought I'd have to write a review…read morelike this. The recent "renovation" is not an upgrade, it's a complete downgrade that destroyed what made this gym unique and functional. The biggest issue is the turf. Moving the entire turf downstairs into a hot, poorly ventilated, dark basement makes absolutely no sense. There is no space to move at all. You can barely put a mat down without stepping onto someone else. The turf area is now a 3rd of its original size and the room feels cramped and borderline unusable. It's impossible to do HIIT, sled work, mobility, or any meaningful functional training. This decision alone has eliminated the soul of the gym. Upstairs is now crammed with machines, far too many for the amount of space. Instead of creating a better flow, the floor is overcrowded and chaotic; it feels like every inch was filled just for the sake of adding more equipment, not improving the member experience. What used to be a small but energetic and community-oriented gym now feels suffocating and disorganized. What's frustrating is that Crunch Greenpoint did need an upgrade, but this wasn't it. A real upgrade would have been removing some of the unnecessary machines and bringing in better functional training equipment, not burying the turf in a dungeon with no room to move. Crunch Greenpoint used to have character. It had a great vibe. It wasn't huge but it worked because the layout made sense. Now it feels like the gym identity was erased overnight. I genuinely don't understand the reasoning behind these changes, especially the decision to move the turf downstairs. It's a waste of space and a complete step backward. I do hope that these changes are reconsidered. The renovation did not modernize the gym, it dismantled what made this place great and worth coming to.
