I'm a perfectionist, so it's a nature of mine to be very picky when it comes to ballet class (I've tried so many in Manhattan but...). After the first one with her I can tell, she's so wonderful and professional and make the class well-organized. She put her heart into it, and it worth the time and paying. Every class I make progress. Tips from her are extremely helpful that in my weekend classes teacher can tell the difference. This is amazing!!! This place is highly recommend. And I'd like to add several points brought up by others: 1. 5th FL Yes, you need to walk all the way to 5F since there's no elevator. But 5 floors can't be a big deal to a dancer unless having injuries - If you are, better look for sth else till become strong enough to do ballet. 2. Neighborhood It's in a safe, pleasant neighborhood along Broadway St. Chinatown is large. Also as a common sense, not every place is dirty - There are a lot of "hidden treasures" around this area. Plus I have no problem walking along the street after class. 3. Classroom Having experienced a number of doom, slippery, compact rooms I really like this one: High ceilings, plenty of bare space, large mirrors, and wide windows with beautiful night view. Floor's nice, too, good for flat shoes, pointe shoes, and also socks. The best part is the atmosphere. Other than Tiekka is so enthusiastic and always selects the best music, everyone is friendly. From day one after trying it out via ClassPass- I was hooked. Although I kept my ClassPass membership to do other things (boxing, HITT, etc.) because I was nervous, I wouldn't stay in shape if I only did ballet. WELL, I WAS WRONG! I learned the more ballet you do, the more it works for you! I had an emergency surgery that required me to be off from all workouts for six weeks. When I was ready to exercise, my body was too fragile to take on anything that strained my body. My husband suggested only doing ballet for a month until I was back on my feet. Fast forward three months, and I'm only doing Everyday Ballet, and I'm in the BEST shape of my life. The best part is I love being there. I never have the tread of getting in the right mental place to go because it's so fun. Tiekka, the other instructors, they all have such a great passion for dance. You see it in their smiles and how they engage with the class. My only regret is I didn't become an unlimited ballet student sooner. GO! Get off Classpass and go 3-4 times a week, and you will be amazed by how you feel, physically, mentally, and spiritually. You get beautiful music to enjoy, a toned body, and ballet training from professional ballet dancers and a principal professional ballerina!!

This place is deserving of it's glowing reviews…read more I signed up for a Friday evening Beginner's hip hop class with Ryan who was covering for Rob that day. As someone with zero dance experience, I found the pace of the class too quick and had a hard time keeping up, but that's not anyone's fault. If you have two left feet like me, it can feel intimidating and honestly, discouraging because all the students are great dancers (seriously, have you seen the class videos?), but as Ryan said..practice makes perfect and you just have to keep at it. Despite the nerves, I'd come again because the classes would be a great way to get out of your comfort zone (if you're not a dancer and/or have stage fright) and build confidence. I also recommend dragging a friend to go with you if it's your first time. For you first timers, the building is right to Taco Bell (burritos after class, anyone? Haha) and staples is on the corner of the same block. classes are on the 4th floor. When you get into the building, show your ID to the front desk and they'll give you elevator access. Classes are on the 4th floor and you don't need to check in with them at the front desk. Once the class begins, the receptionist in your studio will check you in. There's a changing room and you leave your belongings in the studio. As for dress code, wear athleisure or something comfortable. I saw jeggings, shorts, tanks, leggings, and sweats. I'm not sure if all the classes are like this so don't take my word for it, but it begins with a 15-20 minute warmup, followed by 45-60 minutes of learning choreography, and ending with 10-15 minutes of "groups" where students are split up to have more room, followed by the opportunity to get your groove on with an even smaller group. Each group goes twice--once with the instructor guiding you, the second time without. You'll also be shuffling to different ends of the room so you can get closer if you need to. Also, each instructor chooses what they're teaching so you don't know the song choice beforehand. Now onto the actual class..Ryan is a great instructor. He breaks down all the steps clearly and at a reasonable pace. He'll repeat them as many times as you need. Again, I struggled because I take longer to learn, but despite that, I enjoyed the class. The room is small for a class with about 40 people but the high energy and positive vibes you'll get more than make up for it. Overall, I'd go again. FYI, If the class is full, you get put on the waitlist (max of up to 10 people can be on this list) and you'll be added to the class as people drop out. If you haven't heard by 11am the next day via email (cut off time to drop a class before late cancellation penalty), you can use that credit towards a different time unless you want to continue waiting to see if the class frees up.

One of the things that I really like about the hip hop classes is how much repetition is utilized to learn a choreographed routine. As a dancer of many years, 50% of the battle is memory and repetition of each mini-sequence really helps a new dancer solidfy not only the choreography but also master the details of the steps. All the instructors are extremely friendly and approachable, not necessarily so at other places. Not to mention, they do have their own different styles to accommodate different dancers' personalities. Check-in is always a smooth process with HoM staff. All the dancers that attend are super supportive and really nice as well. Nobody ever judges. I wish HoM was out here in the Bay now that I've moved. I've come to love my HoM family in my short time living in NYC. They've only added to the love that I now have for NY.

Their current studio manager is very prompt and organized booking space as well as responding to other inquiries. Sometimes the floors are dirty, and the endless stair climb to get there is usually more taxing than the 3-hour rehearsal to come but the space is otherwise dependable. Both studios can play CDs or Ipods, and I believe there is a TV/DVD player available if you ask ahead. There is not full-time reception staff, so you have to be the responsible key-carrying renter if you use the space outside office hours. They've recently installed a vending machine with a surprisingly healthy array of picky-dancer snacks (read: high protein non-junk food with plenty of options for every dietary restriction). I would caution anyone doing risque or scantily clad work here - both studios have huge windows looking out at a high-rise apartment building and the staff have offices on the far side of one space so they walk through both studios with a kind of "open-door" policy.

I just took my first salsa class here at Dance on 2. I did the Beginner 1 combo. Can I please say I…read moreloved it?! I'm a person who usually can't dance, don't dance, and have two left feet. First, the class is divided by gender, Jai Catalano taught the guys and Dayana Martinez led the girls. We learn the basics, footwork, turning, and so forth. Then after a five minute break, we partnered up. I was so nervous about partnering with someone, because I kept on messing up on my footwork in the beginning of the class. I absolutely did not have confidence in myself. I thought " Great! First class, already fallen behind. If I can't keep up with the basics then how can I dance with another person?" I went up to Jai and Dayana about it. They told me it was normal to feel this way, and that there were a few other first timers there as well. Most of the people in the class have been attending for a few weeks now, but they started out the same way. They both believed I could do it. There is such a huge difference between copying what the instructor is doing vs. dancing with a partner and having someone lead you. This review might sound naive, but it's because I've never had to dance with anyone before. What I really appreciated was that when I was having a difficulty with something or they noticed a wrong footing, they were quick to teach me side by side. I also loved how by dancing with someone, we were learning from each other and getting it through together. After an hour into the class, subconsciously it was like my feet knew what to do next. I wasn't looking down anymore, but actually looking at my partners' faces. One of them was even surprised to find out this was my first time! Under Jai and Dayana's guidance and instructions, we even got a little intricate too with all these turn patterns, and we were all getting better and better with each repetition. I totally recommend learning how to salsa at Dance on 2. It was such a comfortable atmosphere based on learning and having fun. Can't wait to go next week!

She runs a number of classes at different levels starting at absolute beginner up to very advanced so there is definitely something you can get out of one of her classes. You'd be surprised how much you can accomplish in one hour as I've seen plenty of two-left feet beginners come in and leave after a class with confidence and a few good moves for the dance floor. Be aware though that these classes are challenging and that you should be reasonably fit, at least fit enough to do an hour long aerobics class. Plus, bring a bottle of water and a notebook because you'll cover so many different moves and combinations that you're bound to forget a few things. So, if you've ever watched someone salsa and thought to yourself that you would really love to do that then come take a class with Melanie, its not expensive, nobody is judgmental and you'd be surprised to see what you can learn in a short period of time.

After I was given the opportunity to watch the Paul Taylor Dance Company's stunning performance of…read more the Emmy-winning, "Speaking in Tongues" and a playful dance piece set to the music of Bach at Lincoln Center last month, I decided to take the open modern class at the Paul Taylor School in the Lower East Side. Learning from a retired company member was such a great honor. The adult open modern class is every Thursday night and is $20/class. The class size in this studio school is very small and offers quite a different experience from most other much more crowded dance classes in Manhattan. Expect to be called on by your first name and receive a lot of personal attention and constructive criticism. Also unlike other dance classes, you will have a warm-up and learn a string of short pieces (instead of one long piece of choreography) with each short piece incorporating and concentrating on at least one Paul Taylor signature move. Being able to learn these characteristic moves that I had just watched the company perform on stage was both interesting and rewarding. It seems like these pieces are taught and redone week after week rather than being expanded on which may be preferable for some. The class is also taught with live music, which always makes the dance process much more stimulating. While the room is large and contains many windows, the downside is the lack of mirrors. This may be a personal preference, but I like to be able to watch the instructor, other dancers, and my own body in the mirror to be able to compare and self-correct. Learning the choreography not by watching the instructor's reflection in the mirror, but by copying her mirror image while she faced us, was something that took some time to get used to. Likelihood of another visit: I may go back!
