I have been going to Jon's 4th Saturday of the month for a few years. He is the most gracious & hard-working tango instructor & host I have come across. He is so welcoming & dances with his guests. There is always a fabulous spread of food & wine -- cheeses, crackers, pretzels, peanuts, chips, sodas, grapes, oranges, apples, bananas & chocolates on the tables. He really outdid himself this past 2025 New Year's Eve: a fabulous Roaring 20's themed event with black & gold decorations, great entertainment, outstanding food & a contest for the best Roaring 20's costume. From the first, he provides you with basic moves and an understanding of the dance that allows you to go to a milonga directly and dance (with a limited repertoire of course). Jon is a good natured, friendly and mildly hot-tempered teacher who focuses not only on teaching figures and dance moves, but also the technique behind doing those figures accurately- which helps when you need to improvise on the dance floor.He is well balanced by his partner, whose experience at following allows her to assist ladies in learning their moves, and, help gentlemen correct any defieciencies in their ability to lead. Jon and his partner provide support for students, who attend classes with the objective of being able to go out and dance with many different partners at milongas throughout the city and the world, by providing workshops and classes for the other popular milonga dances, i.e. Vals and Milonga. Additionally he hosts weekly milongas where his students and non-studetns alike are invited to come out and dance for hours, providing Tango With Jon students with the practical experience of dancing with people from all over the city and the world. Having been a student of Jon's for the last eighteen months (since I started Tango) my confidence in my ability to dance with partners at all levels has only grown. And, I find my hunger to continue learning and dancing is unabated, in fact, I take more classes and go to more milongas than I did when i just started. I took a few classes with Jon about 5 years ago. Just like everything else in life, practice makes perfect. You won't become an expert by taking one class. However, my intention was not to become an expert. I just wanted to get out of the house on a Saturday night. The milongas are fun- you get to meet people and have a few drinks. The prices were somewhat reasonable, especially compared to these other elitist tango studios (they might have raised it). However, some guys are overly possessive of their girlfriends. Once, we rotated in class and I was dancing with some dude's girlfriend. He kept staring at me the whole time. I will admit that the girl was attractive, but I wouldn't knowingly hit on a chick who had a boyfriend. After the dance was over, I left the building. Besides that one incident, I enjoyed taking classes here. I loved practicing with Della (I'm not sure if she's still here). I may come back this summer. read more

Horrible teacher! I wasn't able to get to the class even though I followed instruction, made reservation and got there on time. I purchased beginners class on Groupon because the location is convenient for me and class time match my schedule. It shows there are beginners class on Wednesday 8:30-9:30pm. When I emailed to make a reservation. He told me there's no class beginners class on Wednesday, so I have to take the Friday class starts 8:30pm instead. I get to the building (131 W 35th Street) at 8:20pm, which is 10 minutes before the class starts, the front was locked and I couldn't get into the building. I tried to call, he didn't pick up until the third time. I explained that I got locked out and ask him to open the door for me, he said "That's all right. I'm teaching right now. You can come next time. Thank you" and hang up directly. I kept calling him but he never pick it up again. What does it mean by "all right"? Nothing is "all right" and "Thank you" doesn't mean polite at all! SO RUDE AND IRRESPONSIBLE. I had to change my schedule to take the class, wasted 2 hours on the way and my Friday night was ruined! read more

I have been taking classes with Jon and Della for about six months, both private and group classes. Jon takes teaching very seriously and does not waste time in class, which I appreciate since tango classes (and shoes) are more expensive than lessons in other types of dance I have studied (salsa and belly dance.) The sequences and choreographies he teaches are never boring, always challenging. He is always on time to class and he hosts several weekly events where students can practice their dancing. However, Jon is very direct; if you are thin skinned or expect to advance quickly just by virtue of showing up, then I suggest you find a different teacher. read more

I love learning the Tango! Jon & Della are great teachers. All kinds of levels are taught. I found him to be very patient with me as a beginner and worked with me to keep trying intermediate/advanced steps to get better. Along with the Tango, I've learned the Tango Waltz and the Milonga (Admittedly, I had no idea what that dance was...now...I LOVE it!) Jon also hosts a Tango social every week. It's a great different type of evening out in NYC and you can try out what you've learned in class. I recommend to anyone that wants to give Tango and Tango With Jon a shot...do it. I like Jon's close-tango style. The price is right and he works hard to develop a tango community. I don't know that I'll ever dance as well as he does, but I am inspired by his technique and watching him dance. He encourages when you do something right and he's quick to stop you if you're doing it wrong. That works for me. He's serious about the dance and seems to treat it as a religion. Awful. Took a beginners class and Jon showed us this one absurd move and then just left the room to talk to other people in another room. He didn't explain about the basics and left us to practice that one move over and over again. I went to another tango class and actually learnt more in a few minutes than an hour of just twiddling my thumbs and fending for myself. Go somewhere else if you want to learn tango. read more

I've been taking lessons with Jon for about 15 months now, and I sincerely recommend this to students of all levels. Having taken classes at some of the bigger schools, I can definitely say that the progress one makes in Jon's classes is far quicker, owing to the smaller class size and the more interesting and complex figures that Jon introduces with each class, then goes on to break down, step by step for leaders and followers. At the end of the class, you can record the move to study and practice at your leisure. Thus, week by week one's repertoire of moves grows, whereas at most of the larger schools, you pretty much start over every month, learning the same thing, uncertain if you can take a higher level class yet or not. As well, Jon teaches most of his classes with his long-time partner, Della, an elegant and knowledgeable tanguera, who, in addition to being a superb follower, can lead many of the moves as well, so there is an additional expert with whom to dance and from whom to learn and get feedback. More importantly though, I have come to know a group of people who consistently attend Jon's classes and milongas, and this feeling of camaraderie, ease and shared laughter is one you simply don't get elsewhere. It's like acquiring a small tango family, which is priceless, as anyone who has ever gone alone to a milonga and felt lost knows well how to appreciate. When I come to Jon's milongas (especially the one at The Ball NY at 131 W. 35th St., 5th Fl., which has simply the best dance space of any milongas I have EVER attended), I feel at home, knowing that I will always have a partner, because, among others, I always see there the very people whom I saw earlier in the week at class. Jon also has great guest perfomances, refreshments, raffles for free shoes, dresses, classes and entries to his milongas. It's always a LOT of fun.
