A friend and I decided to take flying trapeze for fun; upon arriving the workers here are very friendly and accommodating. I appreciate the positive and upbeat approach to nervous clients that never done this before. In the beginning of the class we were stretching full body and we were lucky enough to see a rehearsal during our class. We were instructed to come up the ladder and be strapped with a harness. The next steps they vocally announced was that we had to hook our legs and hang upside down while arch our backs. I was quite nervous to be honest and my first time doing this so this task was hard to achieve. I'm slightly afraid of heights and wanted to get over that fear; however as I was struggling emotionally/physically our coach Carol was giving me tough love advice. At first I was discouraged at this and took it personal because my body physically couldn't do it (perhaps this was a mental block) and I couldn't move onto the next level (having someone catch you). My friend eventually got to do it and I slightly got discouraged at this point. Looking back at it however I know she meant well. Regardless, it was an amazing experience. read more

Great show with a gravity defying theme. There were some parts of the show that I was so nervous for the performers that I almost climbed on the lady who was sitting next to me (whom I didn't know). The last day of the show is tomorrow. I would say check it out if you are in the area. It is different. They also managed to somehow fit trapeze into that small space. I am not an athlete, I consider myself decently fit and work out 2-3 times a week and this class was tough! It was super challenging to learn how to "fly" which is synonymous with actually falling. The instructor, Daniel was fantastic! He pushed me and also knew when to back down. This class makes you very aware of your body in every way, you think about your feet and head and how both work together to build the movement you're trying to do. I loved this class and I would definitely do it again. It came up on classpass and it was such a great deal! My elbows got banged up but I honestly think that was more a "me" thing than anything. I was also the most sore I've ever been for the next 2 days. read more

My friend invited me to an ADULTS only show this past Friday night and wow it knocked my leggings off! The show started at 8pm ($25) and there were quite a few interesting acts. There is the silk rope, the German wheel, the ring and of course sexiness all around. There was a girl on the ring and she was just mind blowing. Redheads, they always got it going on(well granted she was a dyed one), but still... The show ran for about 1.5 hour and there was an intermission in between. There was also fight choreographers and wow my what nice lats you have! One of the performers had such nice latissimi dorsi that I had to tell him. He just laughed at me. You got to give credit where it is deserved! The only gripe here is that they didn't have any ADULT drinks on hand. Just a lot of popcorn. My friends volunteer here so it was way cool to hang out with them and the performers afterwards. I felt like Brooklyn celebrity. LOL. Definitely catch a show here, but better yet, take a class here. You can get our trapeze act on here and impress those dinner party guests of yours! What can I say? I love my hood! read more

Came here with the bf on a Saturday afternoon and had a great time! I admit that it's been awhile since my body has on a swing, so i felt a bit light-headed about 1.5 hrs into the class. Took a quick breather and was still able to finish out the class. A few things - i am petrified of heights, hate any kind of G-force feeling and don't find myself to have much upper body strength. With that said, i went on multiple times and of course got a little tired. The class seems like a great value because they teach you how to swing, hook your legs, let go, reach back and "catch" with someone. I was having a hard time letting myself relax so i began to fatigue quicker than i'd like and as time went on, i only got more nervous. Luckily for me I was able to do the catch - you are swinging doing your trick and let go to grab onto someone else on another trapeze. I only had 2 tries and was able to muster the strength on my last try. It was awesome! Kimmy and Kevin were very helpful in making me feel safe and made it fun! What a great space! Streb is great for anyone looking to try something a little different to your usual workout class. I signed up via class pass - i managed to score a 4 classes for $4 promotion so this $42 adult trapeze cost me $1... can't beat that! I opted for the two-hour open class at 8.30pm on Monday. Was very sceptical and did not know what to expect but the instructor are great and they talk you through everything you need know - how to hold the bar, how to jump and how to swing your legs onto the bar and hang from your knees. Seemed daunting at first but the instructors really help you get there! About 3/4 of the way through the class, those who have mastered the first trick move on to a 'catch'. Once you are swinging from your knees you put your hands out to one of the instructors who then catches. It was such a great achievement to have progressed to this from never having been on a trapeze! i feel like with continued guidance there is potential to progress through this class quickly. Albeit on the pricier side than other classes im going to go back maybe once a month to see how much i can improve on my trapeze. Having said that, its a great class and definitely worth trying even if it is only once! read more

Sometimes I like to hang upside-down mid-air by only a ribbon. Some people like to run. Some like to swim. Some prefer long hikes in solitude deep in the woods. Me, I like to contort my body in unnatural positions while the blood is rushing to my head. Ever since I read about aerial silks in the NY Times a couple years ago, I decided that I too will one day be able to perform unbelievable acts of grace and aerial tricks that you see in Cirque du Soleil. Aerial silks is the aerial acrobatic act on ribbons, where the performers rely solely on ribbons to keep them in the air. I've taken a number of lessons at different places in the city and other cities and I learned that: 1) I should keep my day job and not run away to the circus, 2) the tricks that seem the simplest and easiest are actually the hardest and the ones that hurt the most, and 3) this is quite possibly the most fun form of exercise ever. Cody is a really great instructor. She's kind, patient, really good about explaining how to do the tricks, and is full of positive reinforcement. She doesn't ever make you feel bad when you can't pick up a trick as quickly as the other students. It's a friendly, non-competitive environment where everyone is really supportive. When you finally do master a trick, everyone stops to applaud you and they're just as happy about it as you are. The hour really flies by. Unlike other classes I've taken where toward the end I'm secretly counting down to the end, I'm always sad and let down when it's the end because I want to go on. The Streb is a fairly small place so they really use every inch of it. While you're taking your lesson, other people are taking their lessons (tightrope walking, acrobatics, trapeze, etc) too. It can be a little distracting if you let yourself watch what other people are doing, but after a couple sessions the novelty wore off and I just concentrate on my own stuff. I love doing aerial silks because it's: 1) pure fun, 2) great for building upper body strength (especially if you hate weight training like me), 2) great for developing flexibility, and 3) better than watching the circus! read more

This was an EXHILARATING experience. My heart still races from thinking about it. As someone who is scared of heights but also incredibly stubborn about doing things I am scared of, this was the best place to be introduced to trapeze. Streb has been on my radar for a while. It offers awesome classes you can't find everywhere else, like parkour, silks, and trampoline. The space itself is very small but they get creative with it and can host multiple classes at once. It was a little distracting to be so close to the trampoline classes but that only made me want to try out that one too! As for trapeze, it's 2 hours and the class is small enough to guarantee that you'll get it try it out a handful of times. I chose Streb over TSNY because it's a fraction of the price and I've heard that TSNY, while higher and more scenic, only lets you go 3 or 4 times. At Streb, we got to go several times and improve quickly with lots of direction. Basically, you walk into their space and head straight to the back, where they show you the ropes. They teach you basic moves and rules. Then, you go up a ladder and step onto the platform, where they hold you while you reach for the bar and then they let you know when to jump. The first time was absolutely insane; I thought I was dying. But you're fine. There's support beneath you. After a few turns, I was ready to do some more advanced moves. You end the class with "catching," which is actually not as impossible as it sounds. The key is to follow direction and not hesitate, even though instinctively, you don't want to let go of that bar and go upside down. The instructors are super helpful and know what they're doing so just trust them! P.S. I managed to complete the catching one, and it was awesome. Will definitely be back for more! read more

I had previously taken a trapeze class at Streb for a friend's bachelorette and was very impressed with the facilities, the instructors and the overall experience. So when I saw a deal on Amazon Local for the same exact class, BF (who was extremely envious that I went trapezing without him) and I decided to take the class with a few friends. Even with the voucher, it was easy enough to schedule a class if you do it a few weeks in advance. If you are scared of heights, this is prob not the class for you. It doesn't look like you're that high up but when you are climbing that ladder and standing on that tiny platform, it can be a scary thing. Even though it was my second time there, my heart was still pounding. The instructors are very reassuring and they def make you feel safe. The first part of the class is spent going over some safety rules and practicing on a stationary trapeze bar that is only 6 ft off the ground. Each participant is required to wear a safety harness and an instructor will secure a safety rope to your harness once you reach the platform. The instructor will go over the proper form to swing from the trapeze bar.. don't bend your elbows! and will teach you the correct way to let go and drop to the inflated mat below. They will also help you with the timing of pulling your legs up to the bar to hang from your knees and then back by calling out instructions while you are swinging. It's much easier when you use your momentum do this and it requires just the right timing. Depending on the size of the class and how quickly each person goes, you can go again and again. During the last part of the class, we get to attempt the catch and release. One of the instructors will swing from a bar across the way and as you are hanging from the bar from your knees and swinging towards him, you arch your back and extend your arms and he will grab hold of you and voila! Don't worry if you can't get it on your first try, each person gets to go twice. That was def the most exhilarating and gratifying part of the class! Kevin was the "catcher" in this class. He might not look like a big hulking dude but he caught a guy in our class who was 6'5" and 220 lbs!! 2X too! The class is 2 hrs long and it was the perfect length for me. Trapezing is a lot harder than it looks and it can get pretty tiring. Halfway through the class, many of us were complaining that our calves and shoulders hurt. Stretching beforehand would prob be a good idea. One thing I noticed is that the instructors really do take into account each person's skill level. The first class I took was a lot slower paced and I think it was because we were a group of women and some of us in the class were deathly scared of heights. if you know me ( which you probably dont ) you would know that i have a huge fear of heights. i dont know if it was the rush of adrenaline or if everyone here was hut so supportive and welcoming that i completely got over it. you will be amazed at what you can do. i did the trapeze class with 0 experience managed to do everything that the class offered. i'm not an extremely athletic person either!! keep in mind if you do the trapeze class you're guaranteed at least 3 days of sore arms and abs! it REALLY kicks in on day 2. great workout. great staff. cant wait to go back read more

I found out about this place after buying a "buy with me" coupon. I was a bit skeptical about the trapeze class at first because I had never heard of it and the price was so cheap. I am so glad I ended up going. I loved the experience! The staff was friendly and very helpful. I didn't think so at first, but I was able to hang off the bar and then get caught at the end. This was all in 2 hours! Needless to say, I enjoyed my experience here and loved the fact that there was such a small group! Just remember to trust the staff and you'll be fine! I've taken a number of different classes here and they are all amazing. The instructors are all great, the classes are super fun and you get an amazing workout while having a blast. A lot of stuff looks harder than it is and you may surprise yourself when you realize all the cool things you can do! I would give 5 stars for the quality of the classes, 6 if I could! The reason I'm only giving 3 stars is because scheduling those classes seems to be impossible. I tried to take classes this winter and 4 of the 6 times I signed up for ended up being canceled. Most of these times were because they had to get ready for performances, or move equipment, or because they decided at the last minute to close for an extended time over the holidays. At least in these cases they were able to notify me of the cancelation ahead of time. I thought I had bad luck and tried again over the summer but 2 of the 4 classes that I went to ended up being canceled after I got there. Either I have really bad luck or they need a better system if they are going to offer classes to the public and not just to members of the company. read more

I paid full price for the 2 hour trapeze class ($37.50) and I thought it was totally worth it. Kimmy, Ace, and Josh are amazingly fun, friendly, and professional instructors. And despite me being one of only two noobs in the class, all the other students were super encouraging. I've done a fair bit of "adrenaline sports" (skydiving, bungee jumping, cliff diving, etc.), but it still wasn't so easy to lean out over the air cushion and keep my wits about me well enough to keep the details of the instructions in mind. So I just went for my first trapeze class. Woohoo. It was an AWESOME experience. For a small price, you get some serious adrenaline. It looked easy watching people go up to swing but when it came to my turn, I almost wet my pants. But then I didnt. I did it, went back up and did it again :) You quickly realize that it sucks you in like a vacuum and you can never get enough. The place is a nice walk (12-15mins) from the subway. The classes are 2hr long which is good, gives you plenty of time to absorb everything thats going on. The space in itself is huge, spacious, has a ton of character. The instructors are very friendly, patient and fun. To sum it up, you sign in, meet an instructor, they show you the drill and then you take your plunge. This may not be for you if you are afraid of heights, are out of shape or prone to heart attacks. I cant wait to go back. read more

Parkour! Parkour! I saw the opening on ClassPass and figured, why not, right? I unfortunately injured my forearms a few days before while bouldering, but luckily it wasn't as high impact as I would've thought. We started the first hour with some warm ups to get our bodies fluid and used to rolls and interacting with our environment. We practiced a few hand plants on the mat before moving it to actual obstacles. The vaults were surprisingly hard for me to get used to, and I stuck with the basic apparatus all night. In the second hour, I attempted a front flip off a raised platform and was able to follow through by the end! I left the class feeling accomplished, but not as sweaty as I'd expect from a workout class. I would definitely encourage you to check out their facilities if you want try something new, like parkour, anything win trampolines, or if you're feeling adventurous, trapeze! read more

The Espana Streb Trapeze Academy (ESTA) is located right in Brooklyn in a beautiful space as part of the Streb Laboratory for Action Mechanics (SLAM). The instructors are friendly, helpful and you can feel their enthusiasm to get the whole world up in the air with them. With one lesson you can learn tricks, skills and maybe even get caught. There are safety lines attached to a belt that is securely on your waist, with at least a few instructors at a time making sure you are safe. It's very comfortable and welcoming with the additional benefit of being inside for no weather worries. There's an easy online registration system, and you may even catch a glimpse of the talented Streb dance company while you're there. I have been taking trapeze regularly here ever since I took my first lesson and now I'm training to be a catcher myself. The SLAM space also offers classes in a variety of action movement even outside of trapeze, has a wide range of equipment (fabrics, trampoline, mats) and is available for rentals. For those of you who have never tried flying trapeze, what are you waiting for? This is a fantastic place to learn, and you get to do so much on your very first day. I've been doing flying trapeze for about a year and a half now, and I always look for rigs to visit when I'm traveling. Since every school and instructor has a different style, I've had the unfortunate experience too often of visiting a rig and having the instructors focus too much on specific details of my swing when I just want to throw a few tricks. Yes, I know my swing is not perfect, but I've been working hard on it with another coach who knows my strengths and weaknesses better, and I didn't pay a lot of money to have you critique me when I just want to have fun. Wow, that turned into a rant. But I found Streb to be completely different! When I swung, the instructors did give me some critiques, but they didn't spend two hours harping over it. They let me move on and were extremely nice; I got a couple of compliments on the trick I was throwing, which is always very good for the ego ;-) But yeah, it was just a great experience, and I'll definitely head back whenever I'm back in New York. The only thing that was a bit unusual was that they use big pads instead of a net, which is a bit disorienting at first, but I got used to it quickly and it shouldn't deter anyone from going. I came here with some friends for an aerial silks and stationary trapeze class. It's easier than it looks, and even more fun than you imagined. At first it seemed kind of scary and a little awkward, but the instructors were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They explained everything really well and helped walk you through each step. The atmosphere is very relaxed and welcoming. It's a little pricey (It's around $30/hr), but a quick google search shows that it's comparable to all other trapeze classes in the area. Also, during our lesson there were some professional performers in the room practicing a routine, so while we were waiting our turn we got a great show, too. Bring the kids.... be prepared to get up and move as needed.... also be prepared to see performance that incorporates cutting-edge acrobatics, stunt work, circus and mucho mas..... even cotton candy and popcorn. No really- Elizabeth is a visionary and her productions inject serious energy and inspiration in to the atmosphere. As a former renter of the space (for aerial) I have to say that this is a great and unique asset to the community. 4.5 stars Out of the 5 trapeze schools I've been to so far, this is probably my favorite. One possible downside is the shorter swing and the lack of a net (you fall into a mat instead), but in a way I think it's a good experience to have to make adjustments for things like that. It also makes climbing the relatively short ladder less frightening, for those who are afraid of heights. Unlike other schools they either don't have video equipment (which can be very helpful) or they didn't use it to review my tricks while I was there. Maybe bring your own Flip or camera. Chris (or Kris?) and Dean were the lead instructors when I was there. They are both super fit, professional, and clearly know what they are talking about without making you feel stupid. The catcher seemed to be less experienced, and so the timing was off for both of my catching attempts. Dean let me make an extra attempt at the end of class, so I was able to make one successful catch before the day was over. Again, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, because you have to learn how to make tricks work even when everything doesn't go right. At no time did I feel unsafe. Given that this location is in Brooklyn, it's a lot less likely that tourists are going to stumble in off the street. I got the impression that people who went there really wanted to be there and took it seriously, but the staff was welcoming to first-timers as well. Learning students' names and clearly explaining tricks in advance goes a long way, and these instructors delivered. Also, less expensive than TSNY. Two pieces of advice: book in advance, and LISTEN TO WHAT THE INSTRUCTORS SAY. Timing is everything. read more

A-MA-ZING! Used a "Buy With Me" coupon for $17. I would have paid triple! My boyfriend and I went and we were both a little nervous. There was no need to! Everyone there was so nice and you felt so safe. Little kids were doing it! It was definitely scary at first. They teach you what to do, take extra time if you need any help and encourage you the whole way through. If you are looking for a fun and out of the ordinary activity to do, go here! They have parties too (although I've only seen kids. I'm sure adults can have parties there too!). Class trips too. I can't stop talking about this place. Everything about it is amazing. read more

My review probably only helpful to parents of younger kids who are interested in kids programming at STREB. I'd give it five stars for kids over age 8 but taking off one star for littler kids for the reasons below. My son did the summer camp at age six. He really enjoyed his experience and he got a lot out of seeing the achievements of the older kids and participating in the performance. But, as he was the youngest in the older age group of six to twelve year olds our experience was rather unique. Being the little guy here gave us a different perspective on STREB pros and cons. I would say its both a pro and a con that the vibe is very performance oriented with an achievement focus - that can be great for older kids but maybe too intense for littler ones. The emphasis on choreography led by staff who are performers themselves, rather than child-development type people, so it is strict enough that some kids might feel less empowered and more like they are just being pushed really hard by sometimes frustrated adults who really dont want to mess around telling the kid the same instruction over and over again. My kid didnt love the grown ups getting frustrated with him when he was not able to conform with their expectations to do a specific move etc Personally, I think you need to have bit more of a multiple-choice situation with younger kids to maintain some degree of structure without getting into a power struggle. When I spoke with the director about this, she was a good listener and we reached an understanding together. When I spoke with some other parents who had kids in school year classes they echoed similar expereinces with kids being pushed hard at times and a topic that came up a lot was the Trapeze. My position for my son was that he could do it if he wanted to but didnt have to. My thoughts are that little kids feelings need to be validated for things to flow, so for example, if a kid says "I'm scared" they should be told something like "its okay to be scared, the trapeze is scary. but it is safe and you will be safe to try it here...when you are ready. For now, watch the big kids do it, and let us know when you think you want to try it." instead the vibe here is quite a bit more coercive: like "BE BRAVE. DONT BE SCARED. WE DONT HAVE TIME FOR YOU TO THINK ABOUT THIS, GO NOW, EVERYONE IS WAITING, COME ON, YOU CANT BACK DOWN NOW YOU HAVE NO CHOICE" etc which depending on who you are is either a pro or a con. To me, it is not necessary or empowering to take this high pressure approach. Though my son was glad he made the leap, he really did it out of fear and anxiety and scolding from a staff member. And as a result, he never wants to go back on the trapeze again. So, I'd rather they used empowerment methods but, whatever. My son still had a blast at the camp and will likely return... but probably when he is eight or nine will be best for him. and we can stick with more feel-good stuff for now. read more

I've been here about 4 times 2 years ago. I had a wonderful time flying in the air. It's indoors, but it's a lot cheaper than the one on west side highway. Great show. The performers are awesome. It will have you at edge of your seat. Talking about seats, there are none. There are huge steps marked with number like a gymnasium and that is were everyone seats. Wear something casual for the show. $2 Popcorn :-) great for the intermission. I got a nice Streb T-Shirt for $18 and a cute mug for $8. Staff very friendly. Bathroom small with two stalls but very clean. Overall nice experience that I will repeat soon. read more

The instructors are kind and make jumping off a platform holding on to a single bar seem like child's play. In fact, they also make it child's play (offering excellent classes and camps for even the little ones.) I found a really amazing Silks instructor (Laura Witwer) online and signed up for a class. First the place was difficult to get to (really long walk from the train). When I finally arrived I was ignored by the 2 gentlemen at the front desk, 1 was in a deep cell phone conversation while the other was engrosed in whatever was on the computer screen. After 2 attempts I was able to get one to look up long enough to ask if I was at the right place (neither one seem to sure). I pulled out my phone and assured myself that I was indeed in the right place, then waited until a more friendly and informed staff member to come by to ask any other questions. While I thought that Laura was amazing and enjoyed the class, I found to space to be dark and depressing. I have not decided if I would go back. Fantastic flying trapeze instructors make everyone feel welcome. A truly life-changing experience. I'm taking one star off for the somewhat haphazard organization (especially for non-trapeze classes) and the somewhat dingy location. read more

I just saw this show on tour at the Kennedy Center....what a waste of money. I wish we hadn't gone. The performance was very ho-hum and nothing special. Many people in my yoga classes are capable of doing the exact same moves. Don't waste your time or cash. read more

Why I decided to take a trapeze class, I don't know. I saw an online deal for it, and I guess it made me think about how much I had wanted to fly on a trapeze as a kid. When I got to Streb, I was the only beginner in the class and I was pretty slow to learn. Not gonna lie, I was initially terrified, and I felt like an idiot. The basic trick you learn in your first class is to swing out, pull your knees over the bar, drop your hands down, and then come back down. The scariest part for me was standing on the edge of the platform and leaning out to grab the bar. An instructor holds onto your harness so you won't fall, but it felt so much like I was going to fall that it took me forever to get both hands on the bar the first two times. Then, as I flew, the terror was so strong that I could not even hear when the instructor below was calling for me to pull my knees up. I was able to do the trick a few times, which I think was an accomplishment considering I was nearly paralyzed by fear every time. At the end of the class, you can practice "catching," where you swing by your knees to meet the instructor on the other trapeze and he will catch you. I didn't make the catch as I was still struggling with getting my knees over the bar and by the time I had, I lost momentum. I asked one of my classmates' husbands to take a picture of me during my last flight, and I was amazed at how beefy my arms looked in the photo. At least in the picture, which I later showed to my hubs, I looked like I knew what I was doing. I felt as clumsy as an ox, but I was surprised by my own strength. If I could afford to do it regularly, I expect I would be totally ripped. I was sore for days afterward, and I had bruises on my ribs (the harness is very tight) and the backs of my knees, but it was worth it. I am very rarely proud of myself, but I felt that for risk-averse, mousy, timid little me, flying on a trapeze was a big achievement. Sure, I was a little embarrassed to expose my chicken self to the instructors and the people in my class, but most of them were pretty supportive. My one complaint is that it is rather difficult to register for a trapeze class at Streb. There is no online registration, so I had to call, and it took quite a while to find an available class. They should really have a mindbodyonline account. If you want to take the trapeze class, I would suggest booking at least a few weeks beforehand, and budgeting 5-10 minutes in your schedule for the phone call. But don't be scared, it's fun! read more
