I came to Circus Warehouse looking for a physically and mentally fulfilling counter work-out to intensive Bikram and ashtanga yoga practice and teaching. And wow, did I find it! Over several visits to the Warehouse, I took silks with Summer, stretch and restore with Pacho, back bending with Olga, and ballet with Suzi. All classes were excellent: physically demanding, mentally stimulating, taught by seasoned professionals who've clearly dedicated themselves to the circus training and performance industry. Summer's silks and Olga's back bending left me (gratefully) sore the next day.
If stretching is a time-consuming chore you avoid most days, go take Pacho's stretch and restore class! Pacho radiates knowledge and love. He was patient and thorough. I've had torn and inflamed hamstring attachments for over a year and Pacho gave me helpful advice and gentle hands-on adjustments to get me stretching to restore, not aggravate. I left feeling healed. This insightful veteran offers much. Go see him.
Suzi, Circus Warehouse director, teaches a ballet class that I'd recommend to anyone, and especially those who may shy away from the ballet barre. Despite my poor turn-out (more like turn-in) and a body made for gymnastics, Suzi made me feel comfortable. My take away? The grace and muscular control learned in basic ballet will serve you no matter what you do. In any case, it was energizing to take a ballet barre next to a flying trapeze rig where people call out "HEP!" and throw double (and triple?) summersaults back and forth...
Circus Warehouse has the vibe of a tightly-run professional training program but without the pretension. In between classes, I chatted with a retired Olympic gymnast, a group of bright-eyed Oberlin students training in the intensive professional program, and Gino Farfan, one the world's most decorated and respected flying trapeze artists. Pretty cool.
I came back to the Warehouse for Caught in the Act 10, a student showcase put on by the intensive program. Again, wow. I particularly enjoyed the puppet act by Ora Fruchter of Yellow Sneaker Productions, which was eccentric, vulnerable, human, and original. The world needs more of that. Kudos to Suzi and her team for finding and cultivating such unusual talent.
New York is fortunate to have the Circus Warehouse. They've made me a regular student.
Pros:
Wide range of classes with intelligent, professional instructors.
Extremely clean space! People were cleaning, sweeping and wiping mats and equipment before, during and after my classes.
Friendly, non-pretentious vibe.
Opportunity to learn from industry leaders.
Cons:
Getting to Circus Warehouse can be tricky when the 7 train is out of service. If this is the case, you can take a shuttle bus from Queens Plaza to the Roosevelt train stop. It's pretty simple. read more
