Treated to date night and to my surprise this was something not even on my radar. She did that! Les Ballet Afrik is a multi-cultural dance company whose mission is to champion the Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ experiences within the ballroom scene. Rooted in African, Afrobeat, House, Vogue, and Latin dance styles, Les Ballet Afrik pioneered a new movement style called "Afrikfusion," And when I say baby I was blown away! Support support support. Not sure how long this show is showing but google it and see it y'all! It gave me life, I wanted to get up and dance so bad with them, had me in there yelling WERK, YESSSSSSSSSS, and all the other queens rants. I lived and I'm glad to be surprised in ways like this. Staff was a bit older and a little seasoned and strict but we obeyed all the rules with our mask and no alcohol beyond the bar area. Lol it's dry Jan I was drinking water anyway. The bartender was cool, we talked for a few mins about my hat lol. Clean bathrooms and seats are very well maintained. Now that Joyce sign out front YALL, please get a technician to come fix that.. lol we want to scream to the masses that we were at Joyce enjoying this culture. read more

It is always great and has been for years. Considering they made a theatre specifically for dance out of an old movie house, it's beautifully repurposed. Reasonable prices. Great sight lines. The few times I've been late, the ushers have always tried to sneak the latecomers in somewhere with the least disruption. The box office staff is super nice and very helpful. We have been going to the theatre for more than 30 years, by ourselves and often with a group of friends, and always recommend it to other people. Only once we missed the show and tried many times to exchange for other performances and had no luck. After only a few weeks the overdo administration did not give us seats for other shows. On the plus side, it's a marvelous theater with not a bad seat, acoustically or visually, in the house, and at very reasonable ticket prices. On the minus side, before the house opens, there's nowhere to wait. Down a narrow staircase that fits two abreast only if they're close friends, you have a "waiting area" with a tiny merchandise counter, a concessions counter, and about 5 high metal tables with metal barstools that a chimpanzee couldn't perch upon and not slide off. There is a single accessible toilet on the street level; the restrooms are downstairs and tiny, with 4 or 5 stalls and toilets low enough for kids for Family Matinees but not suited for aging knees and hips. Toss in a rather convoluted ticket exchange policy, and there you have it: An excellent dance venue, coupled with pretty inadequate facilities for audience comfort if they're not in their seat. read more

We enjoyed a stunning, up close and personal Wednesday night dance performance back in October (maybe November) 2019 lead by a tiny firecracker. Ephrat Asherie brought her Hip Hop experience- combined with Modern dance and some Vogueing. So when she mentioned her tour dates to hubs during a Loft party on the LES, we jumped on it and didn't wanna miss her moves at the Joyce. Front of the house was easy access and all we had to do along with another couple with us- was show our online tickets at the box office. Guys tending the entrance were cool, dapper and super professional. Since we ran late, a lot happened in a blur and didn't give me enough time to focus on what was around me. Also, not sure if there's a 'bar' of some sort or restroom location- just double-check on those. Seating was awkward here with one level (I could be wrong)- plus not sure if they slowly rise towards the back. Acoustics on the other hand, worked out fine during the performance. Seating may not have been my cup of tea, but the Joyce Theater puts on a number of interesting productions each year. read more

Went to a show here on a Friday night. The theater was completely full. The process of seating was efficient. I sat all the way to one side in the balcony and was worried I wouldn't see much. But to the contrary I could see very well the feet of the dancers performing tap. I really enjoyed the show in this intimate theater. I doubt there is any bad seat here. It reminds me of the theaters in London. They recycle the playbills. read more

One facet of what makes NYC 'NYC' is that you have your Broadway-Disney shows and your more dignified (stuffy!) shows at the Lincoln Center but you only have to walk a few blocks to find a place like the Joyce that's showcasing wildly original and unique voices for us with offbeat tastes and sensibilities. My first time here was almost decade ago to see Pilobolus which was mesmerizing and strange and most recently to see a show by Companhia de Dança Deborah Colker which was just fascinating and engaging (and a bit spooky). The tickets are more than reasonably priced, the theater is decent sized, the seats are comfortable (if a bit snug - but where aren't they?) and the staff were friendly and precise to make it a smooth ride from start to finish. In a city that's losing some of it's 'street cred' and soul because you can't sneeze without hitting a Pret a Manger or Starbucks and places like CBGB's have morphed into high-end fashion boutiques - it's cool to see the Joyce surviving (and hopefully thriving). read more

So never again will I come to a show here. When I say never I mean never. I personally knew the performers. Yes I do accept that I was 9 minutes late. Cool that's perfectly fine. I'm an international flight attendant and did everything to make it on time after an incoming flight along with traffic and still making it 9 minutes late. I pod $60 for a ticket to not be accommodated. I'm f****** upset. The seat host sat me in the mezzanine. Yes I was provided a promo code but my partner, his mother and I booked seats together and paid the full fee to support the show. We took two different vehicles and again I was 9 minutes late but that shouldn't be a reason for me not to be able to sit with my family. Sam the manager or as she claims was unprofessional and had a horrible attitude. Did nothing to make me feel ok. She said the reason was because people have fallen down the stairs before. I am a 31 year old able bodied male who can make it down a flight of stairs. Again I'm reaching out to the venue for a full refund of all our tickets. No where on the website or when I purchased my tickets was this stated. I will never come back here AGAIN. I'm so angry that literally I'm in the show writing this review/email because I'm unable to enjoy the show in the intended way with my family as I should. So if you plan to go here be on time or they will just take your money and sit you where they feel you below. I'm in the Rosa parks section after I paid for a seat in 102. read more

Here for a kids ballet dance performance. Oh those kids can dance and so much energy. This is a run of the mill theather and has almost everything you expected. Tickets pick up at the window. Waiting area inside. Service drinks by the counter during intermission. And I saw someone bring in an order of sushi from outside. I shoulda done the same. :( Shows run for about a hour to a half and seats are like a budget airline plane size. If you have long legs, pick a seat by the alias. From the look of it, the place is well run. We have assistance finding our seats and they are all the way in the back. If you don't want to sit, you can also stand in the back. I think about every seat is the same here with the perfect view anywhere. I dont think there are much to talk about here except to just write a little bit more. Great intimate theatre. Every seat is a good seat. Saw Alonzo King Lines Ballet: Constellation. It was amazing. Very modern ballet with an exceptional opera singer who added drama to the piece during certain sets. Small company but they dance all over that floor. A must see if you're in town. Graceful, powerful, and unique! It was an awesome display of the body's capacity to move and transform itself into a moving work of art. read more

I knew that The Joyce features the most exciting range of dance in the city. I just didn't know how fancy it was. Beautiful venue, great seats with great sight lines. I saw Ballet Festival with Robbie Fairchild and David Hallberg, along with an extraordinary company. Just wonderful. And it's not that bad a trek from UES. When the F is working you can take that, or take the L which dumps you at 8th and walk up. In summertime that's still too long but it was worth the gross E train down. read more

This is my absolute favorite performance venue in the entire city. It's not the venue, it's the performances. Every imaginable modern and/or experimental dance company comes here from around the world. I have been to literally over a hundred different performances over the past ten years and I have never seen one that i did not like. Don't get me wrong, some are amazing and some are good. Not all shows are amazing. But it's like pizza, even the "bad" ones are still good. Their dance companies rotate with some shows going for several weeks and others only a few days. The first row seating is discounted but not recommended for tap dance, ballet or any other performance where you want to see the foot work. My absolute favorite company that visits is MOMIX. The dance part is fantastic but equally impressive is what they do with lights, objects and illusion as part of the choreography. If you come here once only and are disappointed, give it a second chance. No two shows are ever the same. If you enjoy dance, especially innovative, creative, experimental dance, this is THE VENUE sure to satisfy. read more

Saw a performance by Pilobolus here - they perform here every year. This is a smaller and more intimate theater. As a result, you are very close to the stage and almost any seat gives you a good view. It was a welcome change from the massive Broadway theaters I have been in. If you are into independent modern dance companies from around the world, this is the place to go. And best of all, shows are usually in the $10-$20 range. read more

If you want to return to 2021 go to the Joyce Theater where I was ordered to wear a facemask as soon as a walked in the door - what? The program was by the Versa company which appeared to be at best mediocre angry break dancing troupe. The dancers never smiled or even seemed to enjoy themselves. They seemed to be dragged down by their perceived victimhood which they constantly displayed by vibrating like they were being electrocuted. Too bad because the dancing at the Joyce is usually innovative and interesting. read more

Some of the most experimental and progressive dance companies choose the Joyce as their venue because of the cross section of the arts world in Manhattan is in Chelsea. Th art of dance is not what it used to be largely due to companies losing funding and audiences not being able to pay for performances but with the $10.00 tickets it helps support the theater and dance companies who perform there. I recently saw a flamenco show with Soledad Barrio y Noche Flamenca and was entranced and enchanted! The show was spectacular, and they had a little Q&A with the choreographer, dancers, and musicians afterward for whomever was down to stay. As for the theater, it was delightfully outdated in the best way. The decor feels very 80s, the bathrooms are tiny, and there's nothing fancy about it. But I really loved it that way. There's a tiny little concession stand where we bought wine from a slightly cranky server, and hovered in the small space sipping before heading in for the show (no food or drinks allowed during the show). The seats all seemed to provide a great view of the stage as the space isn't very big overall. I highly recommend checking it out if you want a dose of unique culture in NYC! read more

Review of the MOMIX Premier at the Joyce Theater I would give this performance 6 stars (or ten stars) if I could. I've probably been going to see modern dance since before most of you reading this review have been walking upright, and in my experience, this was perhaps the best, most original, entertaining, exciting, fun 90 minutes of dance/performing arts I have ever seen. I couldn't believe how many times I kept saying to myself, "wow, I've never seen anything like that before" throughout the performsnce. When you take brilliant artistic vision, combined with extrodinarily original and refreshing choreography and combine that with interesting and creative stage lighting, highly talented and athletic performers, uniquely imaginative costumes and a melange of music ranging from hip electronic dance music to contemporized nomadic middle eastern music to Tibetan or Zen buddhist Temple chants to what sounded like a digitized aboriginal Digeradoo's, you get a sum much greater than the parts and a performance that had the audience on their feet screaming in appreciation for what they had just experienced. The dance numbers are almost impossible to describe, but so take a look at my photo, try and imagine a dance routine to each of those phrases, take a hallucinogenic, and repeat the "imagine" part. The dancers each conveyed the essence of the many numbers so wonderfully, sleek and stylish when they needed to be, other times soft and tender, humorous, whimsical, powerful, mystical, enchanted etc. The audience couldn't help but get drawn in deeper with each number. I've long been a fan of Moses Pendleton who has consistently proven himself unique and one of the best through his work with Pilobolus Dance Theater and other associations With this performance, he has taken his game to the stratosphere and raised the bar for others to follow. A not to be missed experience. A quick shout out to the Joyce Theater, also best in class, for bringing us the best of modern performing arts for decades in a cozy, stylish art deco venue at prices that make it accessible for all income brackets. The prices for a New York City Ballet and an American Ballet Company can get pricey - albeit there are cheaper nosebleed seats - but The Joyce Theater is a great alternative. It's a smaller venue but the avant-garde and more contemporary performances are well worth. I was thrilled I was able to see Ballet Hispanico for $10. We sat in the front, that was labeled "partial view" but we saw everything just fine. Getting into the performance was a little hectic. There has to be a better way to check tickets but after the slight confusion the experience was one of a kind. I look forward to returning to this space to see other performances in the future. read more

I've been to the Joyce twice with my girlfriend to see modern dance performances. It's really her thing and not mine, but I try to do something culturally relevant beyond watching action movies now and then so this works. Last year we saw Pilobolus, and more recently we saw the Stephen Petronio company's "I Drink the Air Before Me". The second performance really drove home how well such a relatively small and intimate space can work to a production's advantage. First, it's very hard to get a bad seat in this place since it's so small. I've sat high up and towards the front of the theater and both times the view was great. The Stephen Petronio performance involved a choir singing and live music being played, and the acoustics were really wonderful. The lobby area is really nice and I like their lounge though I will echo that their snackbar is rather limited. You're better off eating at one of the many venues nearby. The staff is always courteous and efficient as they corral visitors to their seats. I think it says something that even though I'm not terribly into the performances I've been to, I do enjoy my visits to the Joyce. It's a good, clean and comfortable venue with a friendly staff. read more

The space is very intimate, I like the seats at the higher part of the balconies; and the higher seats on the main area. The lower sitting area is too close to the stage for me. Important tip: don't even bother to buy the cheap tickets in the first or second row. You will be below stage level and only see the dancers torsos, which seems pretty pointless to me. This used to be a movie theatre so the seats seem a bit warn and low when you sit so consider that when choosing your seats for any performances. I've seen The Parsons Dance company twice here and had seats close to the front. I think I'd select further back to get a better view of the stage. The lounge downstairs serves drinks and snacks and was only open 30 mins before the 8pm show, and the bar and food offerings in the area are slim and always busy at that time.. so eat before coming to the area or make reservations at the locations recommended by theatre and receive discounts/offerings available with your ticket on day of show only. It's a small theatre but good pricing and well worth it for any show/performance. read more

Its hard to separate my enjoyment of specific performances from the theatre itself - so there's probably a star in here for that. - I've never seen a bad show here. Its a great place to see contemporary dance. - Its a small theatre and so no seat is really a bad seat - you can see the stage from anywhere - Having said that - I prefer not to sit on the raised seats at the side - they have less legroom and you have to sit at angle to the stage. - Ticket prices here are just so incredibly reasonable $30 - $60 dollars to see some incredible dancers - its a bargain, I tell you! read more

We love this not too large theater during the visit on December 11, 2021. The Parsons Project performed six dance routines and it was amazing. There were also some live musicians which also enhanced the experience. My only advice is to open the seating area earlier so people can sit if they want to. This would reduce the line outside since people could come a little earlier. We have been to several shows when we visit and will be back the next time we come to New York City. read more

Went to the Joyce Theater to see Complexions Contemporary Ballet. (If you're a Bowie fan, I suggest you see this performance which ends on February 5th!). But I digress... The theater is a perfect size - as someone else said - there really isn't a bad seat in the house. I want to give a special shout out to the staff - whoever (whomever?) is doing the hiring, they are doing an awesome job with the people they hire. From the staff at the box office to the ushers - everyone was friendly and professional (Thank you again to Rosie, for letting me 'relocate'!). Also props to Andrew and Brandon who were diligent in making sure people did not have their bright smart phones on during the performance. Wish they could be ushers at every theater performance and concert I go to as the bright smart phone screens shining during performances is a huge pet peeve of mine. Be in the moment people! The Joyce Theater used to be the Elgin House (a 1941 Movie House). It is very intimate with clues of being an old theater. It was created by dancers for dance. Once experiencing the Joyce I had a new appreciation and suddenly wanted to be a ballerina! Reality set in though and questions arose of Why didn't I continue my tap/ballet classes when I started at 3? :) I went and saw Momix (Moses Pendleton Company) perform there and it was absolutely amazing! They are definitely a more contemporary dance troupe. It's an elegant Theater (you can wear your jeans though) in a hip neighborhood(Chelsea). Lot's of shops/restaurants nearby. ***The dancers do hang out before/after the show at the side door if you would like to meet them. read more

A small trendy Theater in the Chelsea district. We saw Savion Glover and he and his crew were remarkable. I could never have thought that 5 people on stage tap dancing could have kept my attention for over 2 hours. The Theater is set up similar to a movie Theater with sloping seats. We sat right in the middle and had a great view. The Theater is so small that I can't imagine any seat would be a bad one. They have an area downstairs where you can order drinks or snacks during intermission. Like most theaters, you cannot bring the drinks into the actual Theater. Location is near many restaurants including Chelsea Market which offers a number of restaurants to choose from. Their is a subway stop just a block or so away. Definitely a good spot to catch a show. read more
