Carlos is a born teacher (not to mention dancer). He perfectly pairs pushing you to improve and praising the progress you've made. I just finished doing the beginner's intensive with a good friend. We both have a dance background, but never ballroom or partner dance (modern and hip-hop, yay). Carlos was a great teacher. We learned some basic movements and started on musicality (harder than you think!) and learned enough as a class that we're going to start going to tango clubs and have fun! The classes are twice a week for 1.5 hours each, which flies by. They take 5 followers and 5 leaders for each class, but we rotate so everyone gets to dance with everyone else, including the teachers! If you're interested in learning Tango, this is the best place to do it. read more

So after many years of saying I was going to learn the Tango I finally found a window in my schedule to do just that! The hard part was to now find the best instructor! Now I am a typical type "A" New Yorker and a perfectionist so learning this dance was going to challenge many aspects of my personality! I signed up for the beginner's intensive because that's just the way that I roll and upon meeting Carlos and his assistant Melody that first evening I knew I made the right choice!! Carlos is an exceptional teacher he is able to clearly explain the steps and movements. At the beginning of every class he would do a quick recap of the basic steps as a refresher or if you missed a class this was the perfect opportunity to catch up! He's also quite funny and keeps the mood light. This is Tango after all and not our jobs!! Not only do You pay attention in class He also pays attention to you and is able to figure out each student's weakness and help them through it!! So I signed up for the intermediate intensive which started right after the end of the beginners session- there's that "Type A" again - and because now I'm in love with this dance! I can tell that I will be a long term student of Carlos even though I'm not quite sure if he's prepared for that! See we are working through my natural instinct to lead and my back ocho needs some serious help! Actually I think Carlos said - "Where do we start?" when I asked what I was doing wrong! Hello All, I am currently in the middle of the Beginners Tango Intensive that meets twice a week for 3 weeks. Together there is 9 hours of training. My group contains 5 students: 3 girls and 2 boys. However, it is not a problem, because Carlos and his wonderful assistant Meg (who takes the leading role) perfectly substitutes for the luck of another male. It is even better, because for a girl (me) it is better to have a leader who know how to dance, you simply learn faster. The classes are fun and easy. Carlos take you step by step. He is very considerate and you can see that he cares about your progress. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn Tango or just have some fun to take his classes. I only regret that my schedule will not allow me for taking the next advanced course.. read more

I took the beginner's intensive followed by about a year of Intermediate. The lessons at the Tango Company are incredible for all level of dancers. The instuctors(Carlos and Anais when I was there) are patient and knowledgeable and also understand what the student hopes to get out of the class. Of particular help to Tango dancers is the structure of the course - 1.5 hours of class, 2 days a week. This intense schedule helps keep the knowledge front and center until it becomes second nature. I've taken weekly classes and it just didn't work as well for me. Carlos Canedo, The Tango Company's founder and director, developed a unique approach to teaching tango, and under his guidance the students of The Tango Company advance to a solid intermediate level and beyond much faster than the students of most other tango schools. When Carlos is teaching, it is clear that his only goal is to make his students as good dancers as they can possibly be. You can do MUCH - MUCH Better! Sweet as she was, our Teacher has issues recalling which is her left foot. I lie not! "Patterns" are taught in alphabetic sequence so you can dance pattern A+E1+C+A+B. Repeat. No discussion about the music until the 6th class. Routine confusion as to who your partner should be because students patterned their way out of order. We tried Tango years ago and hoped we'd get it back. After weeks of this class, we found a former teacher (Argentinian) who showed us more in one hour than we got in this class over a month! PLUS, we learned the mistakes that were being patterned in to our heads and feet!! No advertising here, but ask and I'll drop names!! read more

I just finished taking the beginners intensive course (9 hours over 3 weeks) with Carlos and I fell in love with the Argentine Tango. He breaks it down so that you don't just memorize the steps, but also learn to walk the walk. He goes into detail about weight shifting, leading/following, pivoting, leaning forward, feeling the beat in the music...all with the most hilarious analogies that somehow get burned into my memory. I love how we rotated partners because this was a true test of whether or not I could follow (with my eyes closed.) I really hope he offers more intermediate classes at different times so I can continue to learn with Carlos. But if not, I'm not giving up on becoming more than a beginner because...I'm in love. read more

I chose The Tango Company mainly because my schedule is always packed and I loved the idea of doing intensive courses -- 1.5 hours of class two times a week. The 1.5 hours is absolutely perfect for learning; enough time to not feel pressured but not enough for Tango overload! Of course, the price was also just right :) Carlos is an amazing teacher because he not only instructs on perfecting the technique, but he insists on dancing with passion and wants you to be able to understand the music so that you can attend milongas (Tango Socials) with confidence. Apart from Carlos' many years of Tango experience, which you can read for yourself, I highly recommend as a teacher for his personality and his ability to teach -- not everyone can teach and Carlos not only knows how to teach, he makes class amusing and entertaining whilst making sure that everyone is involved. I've been to "classes" where teachers ignore you and allow you to stand outside the dance circle because no one there really cares whether or not you learn. This was moment I realised that Carlos really cared about his students and wanted us all to progress as dancers. As a bonus plug, you should attend Carlos' classes just to hear his analogies... always gems! You will laugh, you will cry, you will have fun, and you will learn. Outside of class, Carlos encourages his students to attend milongas because really, Tango dancing isn't supposed to be confined to the classroom... I started in Beginners Intensive and have been Tango dancing ever since. Once completely intimidated by milongas, I now seek them out when I travel and make it a point to pack my Tango shoes because I can't get enough! Sometimes the Beginner Intensive can seem slow but, like learning anything, you need to absorb the basics as a foundation to build on. Don't let the nitty-gritty technique work get you down because once you move on to Intermediate and start piecing what you learned in Beginners together, you will be amazed at how much you've learned in only 3 weeks. I rarely leave Yelp reviews, but I had such a positive experience with Carlos Canedo that I felt compelled to let others know for his and their benefit. Three caveats: I had never done a private dance lesson before, I had no previous knowledge of the Tango and my dance moves haven't evolved since my Bar Mitzvah. But I booked a trip with my girlfriend to Argentina and we wanted to get familiar with the Tango before going. Carlos was really great at laying the foundations of the dance; how to move to the beat, how to use your weight to signal to your partner, and how to navigate in the tight spaces of the dance floor. In all honesty, I was a bit nervous because at the end of the first hour I didn't feel at all like I was moving to the music. But we followed his recommendation and supplemented his private less with a cheap beginner's class on a Tuesday night above La Nacional in Chelsea. He also suggested going to a free class that many of the Argentine Tango halls (Milongas) offer early in the night. That proved to be most helpful, and even though I am not familiar with Spanish, I was able to follow along because I already had the basics he instilled in me. After that last class we were set, and actually began dancing the Tango at a club in Buenos Aires. The reason I give so much credit to Carlos is that he really gave us the foundational skills necessary to at least appear competent in Buenos Aires. That was most important to me. By no means was I flying across the dance floor -- how could I have expected to, with just one lesson? -- but I was very satisfied with how well I fared. His ability to teach so much in so little time, combined with his generosity with recommendations for us once we actually arrived in Buenos Aires, made him an absolutely terrific instructor. read more

The wife and I had a fantastic Argentine Tango lesson with Carlos Cañedo! We reserved a private lesson before hand (I called first and then paid online - really easy process). Received prompt emails reminding us of our appointment time and which studio room to meet Carlos. Carlos met us on time and taught at a great pace. We had a room all to ourselves and there was plenty of space to move around. We were complete beginners, but he guided us along to learning a couple movements and combinations we could take with us to practice at home or elsewhere. Thanks Carlos and Tango Company! I'm honoured to say that it's been nearly two years since I've become a student at TTC and am amazed at my progress and on how much enjoyment I experience. Learning to lead a partner in a way that makes both of you feel confident, fun, and connected takes so much time and dedication, as well as a great instructor, who understands not just how to dance well, but how to break down technique and footwork in a way that makes sense to you and can get you through the challenges. In my first year, I had the fortunate opportunity to travel with the school to Buenos Aires and dance tango among the greats, where it all started... As someone who travels to other countries every 8 weeks for business and pleasure, it means a lot to say that I had the time of my life on that trip. The friendships and connections, the laughs, and the experience of setting foot on the Salon Canning dance floor, and the thrill of constantly, bit by bit, achieving mastery in this expressive dance while literally sweeping women off their feet are like nothing else. I've taken classes in other cities in the world and in NY and no one compares to Niki and Carlos. Carlos makes a difficult dance accessible and fun. The basic class gives you enough fundamentals to go out dancing, although getting out of corners remains difficult. The structure of two 1.5 hours lessons a week gives you the immersion necessary to actually remember what you learned last time and build on it. The intermediate classes following the intro class focus on a theme and again you are immersed into that theme and really build the foundation to begin experimenting. I took three 3-week classes here, beginner and intermediate level. At first I thought it was ok. Then I started doing some classes at other studios. Carlos' methods didn't resonate with me. If you don't get the steps or the movement right away, he doesn't seem to have the tools, experience or perspective to help break it down and make it manageable. Further, there are no exercises, warms ups, often not enough opportunity to practice the steps before we are asked to stop and listen to him talk again. Teaching dance and movement is really difficult, so I am sympathetic to the challenges. But there were some issues that made this an unprofessional and un-enjoyable environment. He was rather aggressive about not letting students talk among themselves and try to help each other to get the movements, even if he was not available to answer your question himself. It was a little weird. He would also, annoyingly, make us change partners way too frequently, often more than once a minute. He was very often late to class. He also has a bad habit of demonstrating back to the students their mistakes in a caricatured or exaggerated way. This was always unhelpful and a few times came across as slightly demeaning, certainly not an optimal learning environment. By then end of each course I took, the fraction of people who showed up for class had dwindled to about half (everyone pays up front for the full 3 weeks of class). I don't regret it, because I became friends with several of the other students. While this may go without saying, the 'glowing' reviews on here are probably not legit. I didn't find a single person who found the classes anything more than mediocre. read more

This is probably as good as it gets. I'm an inept 210lb'er who never liked dancing. I took up tango because I wanted to improve my footwork for martial arts (yeah, a bit misguided, but..) For the first time in my life, I like dancing. The school is great, and all the instructors who taught me (5 to date) in classes and workshops are competent, friendly, helpful, in-charge with a light touch, and fun! What a surprise. read more

I started taking lessons at TTC last year and I haven't stopped since. Classes are really well organized and Kenia and Carlos are exceptional instructors. They also do workshops once a month - I've only had a chance to take couple of those but both were really fun. Friday night practice is always super friendly.
