Jeni Breen Tango Academy is a wonderful and amazing place to learn the intricate dance of Argentine…read moreTango. The teachers, Jeni and Matthew, are delightful and the student body is welcoming. I stumbled upon the school from an online deal several moons ago and was so impressed with the quality of the classes and how mentally stimulating they were. Many activity or art form classes in NYC feel over-diluted or factory-assembly-line-esque. Not so at this tango school. The classes are well structured, with clear goals and directions. With all honesty, Jeni is one of the best teachers I have ever had in my life so far. Elegant without haughtiness. She is effective and direct while being very encouraging and kind. Furthermore, Jeni and Mathew, they enable and inspire their students to learn. One can sense their genuine desire for the students to excel, from the frequent and valuable personalized feedback they provide during class. I highly recommend Jeni's Tango Academy if you are interested in tango. In spite of the fact that "....it takes two to tango.", no need to worry about attending solo, since there will always be a rotation of partnering up with your fellow classmates. Definitely check out their website for the start date on the cycles (plus more information on the blocks and levels), since the classes aren't best experienced by dropping in if you are a beginner.

This tango school sets itself apart from the others with a very crucial trait: Jeni and Matthew…read morevery genuinely take a personal interest in the growth of their students. That is, they actually go out of their way to spend the time and individual attention to make sure you that improve, given they see that you DO want to improve. I've tried a few other studios, and I always got the feeling that teachers often just go through the motions; they love tango, but not necessarily teaching. Jeni and Matthew love both, and you feel it during every moment of their class; day in, day out. Their enthusiasm doesn't fade. This has made all the difference in my ~1 year of learning Tango (with no prior dance experience), during which I felt I've learned at a substantially faster rate than I would have otherwise. As a matter of fact, when people ask me how long I've been dancing, my answer is usually met with disbelief. I credit this wholly to Jeni's approach to teaching, which is forgiving enough to let you enjoy the dance and stay encouraged, but also disciplined enough to keep pushing you to the next level. Not only that, but Jeni's personality seems to attract and retain the most grounded, multi-faceted, and wholesome crowd of students. You'll feel like you're part of a real community of genuinely good people, as everyone is tremendously welcoming (especially toward beginners). Joining the Academy has probably been the best long-term decision I've made ever since moving to New York, and I'm willing to bet the same for most people who've been here!

Love, love, love Lorentz!!…read more I found it by accident (kind of). I was just looking for something to do in my neighborhood, walked by, saw noticed they were starting a new beginner class. I was SO nervous. I've always thought I could dance... but def not salsa. It looked intimidating and not for someone like me. I don't exactly have coordination. I almost didn't go in. But when I looked through the window and saw how many people were signed up, and that they looked just like me, I felt a sense of comfort. I'm so glad I walked through that door. A year later, I still consider myself a beginner. I'm not that great. I still mess up. I slip in my heels all of the time. Truth is if you really want to get better, you have to show up to socials too (which I don't do :x ) But those two hours every week are probably the best two hours of my week. Feels like therapy. Chris and Rosh are amazing my fav duo. I couldn't have asked for better instructors. I've always felt welcome, supported, and never judged. When the studio closes for weather or holidays, I actually get sad without my salsa steps If you're shy, nervous, or convinced you "can't dance," that was me. You eventually stop overthinking and just let go. And that's kind of the magic. 12/10! Hope to see you on the dance floor!!

Wonderful and unique experience! I came to the Lorenz Latin Dance studio as part of a celebration…read morefor my dear friend on her birthday. She booked a salsa class for her family and friends to participate, in early April. Lorenz Latin Dance studio is located in the heart of Spanish Harlem (now known as East Harlem). The space is small but I like that because it allows for a personalized experience and no one gets left out. Instantly upon walking in, we were greeted and allowed to start right on time. The studio seems to be very community oriented as they host a number of activities throughout the month. Let me say firstly, that salsa is not at all what I thought it was lol. That little two-step you see on TV was nothing of what I learned during this event. Our instructor Jose (I believe that was his name), took time to educate with grace and rhythm! He took us step-by-step thru a basic salsa routine that included diverse foot work, a couple spins, and some partnering moves. When all was said and done, we were able to successfully complete a small routine with some basic techniques. Overall, very fun and a great opportunity for families, solo, or couples to partake! Our group had a variety of adult ages including elderly, who seemed to keep up without issues. In total, the class was about 1 to 1.5 hours however, I'm not sure what the cost was. The only thing I would've loved to see, is the instructor actually performing a routine for us. It's great to do the class but to actually see what the routine looks like professionally, really ties everything together. Otherwise, it was great! I would definitely return and highly recommend. Tip - wear comfy shoes! I work 3 inch heels and got tired so quick.

I signed up for private dance lessons by Simone and I'm very glad I did, especially after watching…read morevarious other "First Dances" at weddings. Simone presented multiple options on how the lessons would occur and we opted for virtual lessons instead of in person lessons because my dance partner and I would have trouble commuting into NYC. I was worried about how effective these lessons would be, in an NYC living space with an instructor giving the lessons virtually. Relax, have no fear, Simone will be there! She even has a dancing dummy to demonstrate how Person A and Person B should stand/dance/act. Even with lessons conducted via video chat, Simone was able to catch the minor details that we would not have caught or even considered if we were to "learn" via Youtube (which a few of our friends did for their weddings, and it was obvious). For example, while doing a dip, Simone saw an opportunity and suggested that my partner (while being dipped) move her hand in a more graceful manner, a small movement added so much more meaning. We went in with no dancing skills and no idea what to do for choreography. All we had was our first dance song. After after lots of practice and guidance from Simone, when our first dance was performed, it was met with lots of cheer and practically a standing ovation from our friends and family when we hit the climax of the song and dance. Go with Simone. Don't underestimate the value of virtual lessons. She expressed patience and joy in helping us and I know she will continue to do so with all her customers.

I've been taking the online lunchtime dance workout class over Zoom for the last year and a half now, and it has been a lifesaver while working from home. Also, the workout itself is mostly low impact, so I don't have to worry about getting too sweaty and needing to get a shower right away before going back to work. The dance steps are very accessible and she offers various modifications to the dance and workout level for people of different abilities.

2019 Review 99/100…read more The last time I was in New York I decided to take a class at Alvin Ailey. It was a fantastic experience. I ended up taking an advanced hip hop class. The instructor was great and the class was so much fun. I'd love to return again and try some of their other classes. I think this has become a new must-do for me every time I'm in New York. I highly recommend for beginner and advanced dancers alike, as they have a wide range of classes for all levels.

I attended a beginner heels class at The Ailey Extension with Aaron Thomas and left deeply…read moredisappointed and embarrassed. As someone who was genuinely excited to try something new and empowering, I was shocked by how publicly dismissive the instructor was. Aaron moved me out of the front of the class and made a comment in front of everyone implying that those who don't know the steps should stay in the back. This wasn't helpful--it was humiliating. Several people laughed, and the energy shifted from welcoming to shameful in seconds. I've never been treated like that in a learning space. I reached out to the studio about the experience, and the response I got was a rushed, copy-paste message offering me another class without actually addressing what happened. No accountability. No sincere apology. Just a blanket statement saying their instructors are "caring" when my experience clearly says otherwise. If you're a true beginner looking for a safe and encouraging environment to try heels dance--this was not it. I hope the studio takes better responsibility in the future for how instructors treat new students.
