UMakers Makerspace - Printing a banner I needed in a pinch. Thanks, Rob!

I hadn't seen Rob in years, but I had an emergency today--a 14-foot by 30-inch banner needed…read moreovernight for a 7 a.m. event. Rob answered my call, remembered me immediately, and said he could do it. I drove over to his new location and he printed it in under 25 minutes! His prices are unbeatable--he only charged $10, while FastSigns quoted over $500. Years ago, he helped me print a different banner, showed me how to install the grommets, and gave me a grommet kit--six years later, I still remember how to do it! Rob is a wealth of knowledge, and his makerspace is all about helping people learn, create, and even having a platform and commuity support to start making money. If you've ever wanted to learn how to 3D print, use a laser engraver, CNC router, drill press, bandsaw, vinyl printer cutter, or any of his amazing machines--this is the place to join. Sign up for a membership, explore workshops, complete projects, and empower yourself. Whether it's for a banner, group, or business, check it out--you'll love the opportunities here!

The members I met were all super knowledgeable and wonderful people. Rob the founder is so generous with his time and overall this is a fantastic resource and maker community for SoCal. I live in Los Angeles and made the trek several days to put in some time on his CNC machine for 3D routing foam for a sculpture I'm making. It worked out great and Rob and the community at UMAKERS are all so helpful and generous with their time. There is no other place besides Orange County that gives access to as large of a CNC, large format laser cutters and an army of resin and 3D printers. This is a solid FabLab experience in SoCal. I would not hesitate to come back. Full time membership dues are very reasonable for what the Makerspace offers.

I attended events here as a guest and had multiple experiences that raised serious safety concerns…read more At one point, an individual who appeared to be actively using drugs and attempting to steal money from attendees was allowed to remain in the space during an event, despite multiple people being uncomfortable. There was no clear leadership response or removal. Separately, I was invited by a member to an off‑site party connected to this community. After that event, I experienced sudden disorientation and memory loss inconsistent with my alcohol intake. I went to the hospital, was evaluated for head trauma (none found), and the attending physician concluded I was most likely drugged (e.g., roofied). What was most alarming was the response afterward. Rather than concern or accountability, multiple people connected to this group aggressively pushed a narrative that I "just got too drunk" or "hit my head," even after being informed of the medical evaluation stating otherwise. The takeaway was clear: when something serious happens, this community protects itself -- not women who are harmed. There is insufficient leadership, security, or safety protocol to protect members, especially femmes. If your personal safety matters to you at all, I would strongly recommend steering clear.

Lots of 1 on 1 time and having never welded anything before (I work in front of a computer all day), it helped me understand a lot quickly. He was always on it with guidance and what I can do to improve in real time as I'm welding (lifting too much, slow down, etc). Was absolutely a great experience and I will be taking his other classes once I can. He also gives great guidance on equipment, where to spend, options, gear, etc. Super helpful, very passionate. Great guy! If you're looking to learn how to weld, I'd absolutely recommend taking a class with him. Class sizes are kept really small so you get a ton of 1 on 1.

I have lived in Los Angeles for…read moreabout 5 years now and finding somewhere to work on your projects is a near impossible task in my experience. Space is extremely limited and organization can be frustrating, but I haven't found another place like this. There are tons of machines; but it's a DIY shop, so the member needs to be familiar with the equipment they are using. If you choose the membership route, I would recommend budgeting time (at least 30 minutes) to cleaning up before/ after your project. Bill (owner) is an excellent resource and always makes time to answer questions, even when he is not at the shop. I highly recommend taking one of his welding classes, or becoming a member and finishing that project your SO has been bugging you about!
