It seemed like Mexico's version of a "China Town" or "Little Italy" in Hoover. I have not seen anything like this around here. My friend Tina and I tried Mexican sweets here, and I also had a snack of the Crazy Doritos. This place is very whimsical and cute. Perfect for kiddos and families. There is a ton of space too. They have ice creams galore here. It was hard for me to choose! I went for the prettiest one I saw and that turned out to be the Birthday Cake flavor. It was delicious! Tina had the mangonada that looked very good. I was wanting a salty snack too, so when I saw the Dori-Lokos or "Crazy Doritos" I knew I wanted to try it. The lady working there asked me twice if pork skins was okay for her to top onto them. I said sure. Little did I know what I was about to experience! They were actual pork skins that were like a cartilage or jello like texture. I assumed they would be like the crispy bagged variety you see in stores. It was an experience for sure! I liked it, but I probably would not order it again. The Crazy Doritos were also topped with a sort of nut that I liked, cucumber, and hot sauce. I just can't believe I was not in Mexico when I came here. I'm really glad we have places like this that can make some people feel like home and allow other to just have a different experience. It sure was memorable!

Having opened in 2025, El Comal is one of the newest Tex Mex additions to the area. It delivers as…read moreintended, kind people, reasonable prices and large portions. To start, the salsa and chips. Fresh chips are solid, medium thickness. The salsa is extremely salty and does not taste as if it was made recently. Not a favorite. The steak fajitas is loaded with a substantial amount of beef, which is a wonderfully sized portion for the $14 that it costs in 2026, but the meat is not of good quality taste wise and very tough. The sides are all fairly good, except the guacamole, which is almost tasteless and of weird watered down pale green color, likely batch pre-made and preserved with an additive of lime juice. The ladies working here are wonderful, both attentive and kind. Interior is a nice conversion from the Italian restaurant Gino's which used to be in this space for close to a decade. As a whole, El Comal is probably not a place to run back to, but might be worth trying for some of the other dishes aside from steak fajitas.

This is one of your classic, casual, sit-down Mexican restaurants. They have everything you would expect to see on their menu. Classic refried beans and spanish rice to accompany everything. I applaud them for their extensive lunch menu. Oftentimes you cannot order a fajita off of the lunch menu. Service was quick. I think we were the only people in here. I imagine when kids hockey games get out at the rink across the street, this place fills up. I have the lunch steak fajitas and it hit the spot. No complaints, exactly what I expected. Chips and salsa were satisfactory, too. I enjoyed a nice, big diet coke and was offered a to-go cup as well. That might be my favorite phrase in Spanish: "diet coke, para llevar."
