This is an unexpectedly great find in Somerville. It is a cafe that serves healthy food like grain bowls, smoothies, salads, sandwiches, and other lunch and breakfast dishes. It is reasonably priced for a health-food type place and the portions are hearty. My favorite part about Nu Cafe is cafe itself. You order food at the front, you get a number to put on your table, and the food is delivered to you when it is ready. It is a surprisingly large space with many tables and ample outlets--a new favorite spot to study on a weekend afternoon. The wall decal that spells out "Food" in the back corner has become Insta-famous--at least around Tufts. The smoothies are delicious, my favorite being the Good Morning. I also am a fan of the salads or grain bowls for a heartier meal. I frequently reorder (I am a serial re-orderer) the Chipotle Avocado & Lime bowl with quinoa, kale, avocado, and beans. Nu also serves a variety of beautiful Acai bowls, which seem to be very popular. The best part?! Free street parking on both sides of the road around it :) read more

NU Kitchen, NU love of my life. I recently read an article about people who eat the same lunch every day. Not for days, not for months, but for YEARS. One guy has had the same PB&J lunch for 25 YEARS (I mean in a way, I get it, they're tasty as hell and cheap to boot). For the foodie curious/adventurous variety seekers out there, that could be torturous. I can do the same lunch for about a week (takes the thinking out when you meal prep right?). But if I could afford it, and if this location were easier to get to, I'd have NU Kitchen kickin kale salad everyday for lunch for a few weeks. Add chicken or tofu for $2!! Initially the concept of having buffalo sauce AND a garlic ginger dressing sounded strange together in this otherwise delightful sounding kale salad, however, upon first taste, I was hooked. Prices are reasonable (although adding proteins are pricey as they are everywhere). The perk is not paying extra for the avo in the salad! So after my bf introduced this place to me, we had NU Kitchen's bowls/salads/smoothies 4-6 times within 2 weeks. But you know, the kind of food they serve is in line with our health goals and taste buds. I'm a huge fan of the Buddha bowl! Southwest salad is good, too. Truthfully, I can't bear to stray from the kickin kale and Buddha bowls just yet. Will explore further one day! The Caribbean Sunset and Blue Monkey smoothies are standard fruit smoothies blended well. We usually order delivery. If you opt to go directly to NU Kitchen there's plenty of seating, although can't say the same about parking! Street parking is easy to find some days and completely packed others! The food is wonderful, the delivery is terrible. Last night (Monday Night) I ordered the always delicious Kickin Kale salad a little before 7 pm using the Caviar app which Nu Kitchen points you to straight from their website. When at 8:20 the app said that my salad was still being prepared, I called Nu Kitchen. They said that the food was ready but that the driver didn't show up. The Nu Kitchen staff told me that I needed to call Caviar myself. After tracking down the number Caviar told me that the restaurant had never marked the food as "ready" so the driver hadn't been alerted to come. I call the restaurant back and get another staff member and explained that the driver never came because the food was never marked as ready. Her response was "Oh, usually they just come anyway, I marked it ready now." Good thing I didn't order hot food. 2 hours and 3 service related phone calls after I placed order i finally got my food, and I had paid extra for chicken to reach the delivery minimum, it was on the order ticket on the bag, but definitely not on my salad. Long story short, the food is great but eat there. The pickup and delivery logistics are notoriously terrible there. Will never order to go or delivery again. read more

I dine in and order takeout from Nu. Both experiences are always great. Bcz I'm a creature of habit I always order the Avocado chipotle lime bowl with braised short rib (extra $4) bcz breast feeding makes you want to eat a horse. The bowl comes with "organic quinoa, brown rice, steamed kale, corn, black beans, fresh salsa, and avocado topped with spicy chipotle lime dressing" and will run you roughly $10 which is common. Nothing is seasoned and the restaurant focuses on allowing the individual flavors to speak for themselves but the chipotle lime dressing does a great job of tying them together. It's always fresh and tasty! My only complaint is the portion sizes. They're pretty small for the price and sometimes I hate ordering the short rib bcz they give such a tiny piece. I did a mock version at home with short rib and what I spend on 2 bowls I can make almost 5. The staff is super friendly and everything is always clean. Service can be a little slow but that's no longer a big deal bcz the little one keeps me busy anyway. They also offer pasta straws (my first time seeing such a thing) which is really cool. Overall, I love the vibe and food and they'd definitely get 5 stars if they tweaked the portion sizes just a tad. read more

Wasnt going to poorly review my first negative experience, but Nu Cafe just delivered the identical negative experience for a 2nd time. I've ordered via Yelp app twice and announced my name in line both times. Both times the front counter associate has said it's not ready yet, to which I wait 10min, they come back to me asking about the order, then find it on a back counter, having been sitting there the entire time. To Nu: your salads are good but please fix your pickup process to avoid wasting customer time! Maybe leave all orders on the pickup desk so we can come in and grab our order without taking time of your associates? Whatever it is, please fix! read more

Today's craving was for something a little healthy and more of a snack, compared to a full sit down dinner. I was honestly being a bit hangry (it's real!) but my boyfriend knew what to do and Yelped some options. He thought this place looked cute in pictures (true) and was still open at 7pm so I got ready quickly and we left. Upon arrival, there were so many options on the menu right when you walk in BUT the chalk wall they're written on is very easy to read and grouped helpfully. I ordered a Strawberry Banana smoothie (can't go wrong there!) and he ordered a Caribbean smoothie. I'm sorry I can't remember the last word in his drink name because it reminded me so much of Jamba Juice's Caribbean Passion which I LOVE!!! And honestly this one wasn't bad but it was definitely similar but with way less sugar than Jamba. Next time I'd try a Juice option since I've had their smoothies! Food wise, I have to say it's excellent. I ordered a Turkey Avocado panini (I adore paninis *heart eyes*) and he ordered a Buffalo Chicken wrap (kinda reminded me of ones they sell at Target but way more fresh). We got the sandwiches with sides of kettle chips (yum). I freakin' loved my sandwich. I walked in not really hungry but I scarfed half of it down so fast and my boyfriend ate some too because we like to share food and he liked it as well. I decided to finish the rest right away. Anyway, he ate half of his burrito quickly too (also solid) and we took the other half home. All in all, I'd definitely come back for more food and a juice! Smells amazing and friendly, nice decor. Really torn on the stars--not quite 4 stars but closer to 4 than 3. I had a blue smoothie and it was very good. Would go back for that. I also had the chorizo Brussel sprout dish with well executed cooked sunny side up egg on top. This was a 3 star dish. Good, but not quite there. Would not order it again. The chorizo was almost imperceptible in the dish. And although I love onions, they were not cooked well enough and in this case did not add a pleasant texture. There were some flavors in there that just didn't seem to fit. It seemed like there were just too many ingredients and they didn't all work together as perfectly as they could. Great place with a lot of variety. I ordered the Maui açaí bowl and a Sweet Beach juice. Both were a little too sweet for me, even though I don't think they add sweetener to any dish since they use fresh and natural ingredients (from my understanding). If the açaí bowl was a little less sweet it would have been better. The good thing is it's very filling and satisfied me like a main course would. Their food is great. Their customer service for dine-in can be really bad, though. Also, the inside is often so smoky; it burns my eyes if I stay there too long (I feel bad for the employees). I ordered a coffee and a smaller brunch item about an hour after they opened. (The coffee is both a bit worse than surrounding cafes and a bit more expensive; the food was quite good, though.) The cashier handed me a large wooden stake with a large number print on the top of it and said nothing about how I should get my food. I saw her preparing the coffee, so I waited for it. I then went to sit down, placed my wooden stake at the front of the table, and started working on my laptop. After like 15 minutes or so, my food hadn't shown up (they were just overnight oats, so I assumed it'd be faster than other items). I got up to check on my order, only to see it just sitting at the front counter. I asked the cashier who took my order how long it had been there. She said, "Ohh awhile," with her eyes widening to emphasize how long it had just been sitting there. When I suggested I thought the giant stake was for an employee to identify where I'm at, she responded that it's just so I know my number when it's called (I didn't hear them call it out, but I did have headphones in). Her indifferent attitude was already irritating, but the experience was especially frustrating because: 1) I came here once before, ordered the same thing, and they brought it to my table. So their service model is inconsistent in addition to their employees being indifferent to customers' confusion. 2) I was the only customer in the restaurant! Literally the only dine-in order, and it didn't occur to her to see why it was sitting on the counter for "Ohh awhile" I do recommend getting their food (not coffee) if you're ordering to-go. But just choose a different place if you're wanting to dine in. There are many other options nearby. read more

Pretty okay spot to grab a juice or a smoothie. The place is pretty large and spacious so you never quite have to wait to sit down nor is it difficult to find a seat. You basically order using tablets upfront from a select menu of items. I rally enjoyed their acai smoothie. One thing I found is that for smoothies that have apple juice, they tend to add too much and the flavor of apple juice is overpowering. I would recommend staying away from orders that have apple juice or just asking for less apple juice than normal. I'd recommend as a good spot to study or spend some time getting work done as the music or space itself is too loud. read more

As much as I love the food and smoothies, I will not be coming here anymore because: 1) They are very disorganized in terms of getting your order in efficiently. Often takes a long time. Not worth the wait. 2.) I started ordering pickup online to speed the process, but again they are disorganized. Someone took my order by accident and I ended up waiting 15 min on top of the 30min preorder to get a new sandwich. Managers: please organize your production line to be more efficient! I love that this gem of a place is right in my neighborhood. If you're looking for healthy, clean and awesome tasting food, this is the place. I have tried many of the items on the menu, everything has been great. You can choose to have many of the items as vegetarian if that's your thing but can add animal proteins if you like. They serve everything from juices, smoothies, grain bowls, salads etc. You're definitely going to find many things to enjoy. I recently ordered from here for a team lunch at work; not only because I drive by this place every day going to work but because I wanted to do something different than the usual pizza. I'm glad I did! Everyone enjoyed their dishes, which ranged from the Salmon BLT to a few varieties of their rice/quinoa bowls. My own Miso Curry bowl very good . I will say that they were a little disorganized when I went to pick up the order; I felt the need to verify that everything was there because it looked like one dish was missing, and they found it in the refrigerator after we reviewed my receipt . Hard to knock them too hard on that though as it wasn't a catering order and how often does a big lunch order include a breakfast bowl? Everything was great, I only have one complaint. DO NOT order the cold brew coffee, I ended up in the ER with tachycardia (elevated heart rate). It wouldn't go down for 8 hours, I'm not sure why it was so strong as I am used to strong coffee but it caused me to have heart problems. read more

This place seemed far too healthy to count as our weekly indulgence, but my spouse was complaining that I keep choosing faces with artery clogging food -- so we tried NU Kitchen. I didn't realize how far away it was from our house (so delivery took forever) so decided this place has to be REALLY GREAT to make us order from them again. Anyway, i got the buddha bowl, my spouse got the southwestern salad (or whatever it's called), and my kids had egg bacon and cheese sandwiches. It's hard to overstate the rarity of this: EVERYONE in my family loved their food. The short rib is the stuff dreams are made of. NU has definitely improved with time, and I'm so glad they have! They're bringing a delicious (and for some folks, necessary) benefit into the neighborhood. Healthy, vegan, gluten-free options are often hard to find, and I feel for my brothers and sisters with dietary needs that often prevent them from eating out. NU has so many options, be you herbivore, omnivore, or something altogether different. This place is growing on me. It is almost halfway between home and art class, so it is a great place for early dinner before class or late dinner after. NU Cafe is my 'nu' favorite spot! To start, the owners are the nicest people, the place has such a friendly vibe (and hats off to the decorator) and the food is delicious. PLUS the serve beer, what more could you need? My favorite menu item right now is the Bahn mi sandwich- so soft and just a perfect melt in your mouth goodness that you need in your life. The pulled pork sandwich is also amazing, I literally can't put it down when eating. Don't forget to add the Tuscan soup- full of stewed veggies, so much flavor and sprinkled with Parmesan. NU cafe is the absolute best for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I live at Assembly Row in Somerville and drive here everyday for smoothies and salad. My boyfriend and I are addicted to their Acai bowls. I am an Acai expert and there's no place in Massachusetts that can remotely come close to how good the Acai bowl is here- you will Legit think you are in Brazil. Their smoothies are all so healthy and yummy. I really recommend everything on their menu. The food is always so clean, healthy, tasty and REAL. I would actually give this place 3.5 stars because the food is healthy and delicious. I have 2 small issues. 1st when you order on Grub Hub you cannot use cash. This would be helpful because we usually split between several people in my office. I prefer to order through Grub Hub because the person answering the phone is usually confused and it can take up to 10 minutes to order. The 2nd issue is the ventilation system. Every time I leave there I reek of greasy smoke. If they could improve on these 2 things I would give 5 stars. read more

Absolutely LOVE this place!! I am so thankful to have such a healthy AND affordable option in Union. Slowly working my way through the menu to try everything and haven't been disappointed yet! I wanted to leave a recommendation about one of the dishes for the chefs - the avocado nuggets were served with a sweet and sour sauce - I thought this was a weird pairing and it didn't mesh well for me.
