If you love out of the box, innovative cocktails, you'll be very happy here at NR. Their cocktail menu is truly so inventive. I started things off with the Blue Cheese cocktail, made with vodka, sav blanc, blue cheese and fig. It was funky, delicious and boozy in the best way. Their special was the banana old fashioned which I followed this up with, which was the real award winner here. Think of everything you love the most about an old fashioned, then infuse it with sweet and delicious banana flavor, and you'll get this cocktail. The ambiance here is also very cool, it's kind of tucked away on a corner. The service was also on point - we were very well taken care of during our time here without feeling pressured to move fast to make a decision on anything or to hurry up and get out of there, if you know what I mean. We did get an order of edamame as well which was perfectly charred and seasoned. Would highly recommend this spot! read more

This restaurant is tucked away on a side street and pretty inconspicuous. It's warm and inviting inside, almost glowy. I often find restaurants in Manhattan feel too much like they're trying to squeeze patronage out of every square foot and get people in and out as soon as possible, which obviously doesn't make for a dinner experience you can actually relax into. There is still a sense of bustle in this restaurant by virtue of being in Manhattan but the tables are nowhere near as squished as in some other restaurants and it feels like there is effort to make the experience of being here good. So, five stars for Manhattan although I don't find dining in Manhattan to be the greatest experience by default. Anyway, I came with a few friends and we shared the charred edamame and then each got ramen. The edamame was simple yet elevated - grilled, lightly covered in chili oil, with generous rock salt. I got the Sapporo ramen which had broth that was rich and flavorful. A few more toppings like egg or corn or something would have been great but it was a solid dish. There's no dessert on the menu which simplifies the experience I guess and makes it clear they are focusing on what they want to focus on. When you're wanting a nice hot bowl of ramen, this is it! Just to put it out there, make sure you make reservations! We stumbled upon this place after a visit to Central Park and wanted something warm since it had been cold all day. We showed up without a reservation, and luckily someone didn't show up so we got in after a 20 minute wait. The hostess in the meantime asked if we wanted any drinks while we waited so it was a nice touch. The buns are definitely worth it! Such a good appetizer with chicken. The flavor was great and the consistency was exactly what I'd hope for it. The chicken ramen was delish! At first I was throw off by the raw slice of chicken chasu but the broth was definitely warm enough to cook it. The depth of flavor from the broth was everything I wanted. I ate the entire bowl. NR has been on my list and when I found out it was opened by the same owners of ROKC, I trekked to the UES and paid them a visit. It's more "upscale" than ROKC and I don't think it can compare but it was still good. Just didn't feel it was worth the price point. The wagyu and bone marrow ramen was rich and savory but at $42 is hefty. The tsukemen also fell short. The noodles were a little too thick for my liking and while the shoyu dipping sauce was good, I just didn't feel it paired well with the noodles. The seafood tower during happy hour was probably the most worth it. Service was great though because they accomodated me even when I was half an hour late. read more

The ambiance here is amazing - note that lighting is bright around 5pm but dims later in the night ~7pm. Choose your own vibe! The seafood tower was fun to eat but bites were definitely small! Was in the area and wanted something that had broth and I came across this spot. I had no reservations, so I opted for bar seating which they had plenty of. Based off the menu this place specializes in drinks, but I unfortunately do not drink. Truffle "Egg Salad" Sandwich($12)- The truffle added another element to a tasty egg sandwich that I enjoyed, it could have had more salt to my liking. Miso Glazed Eggplant($18)- This was very interesting and surprising in a good way. A lot of different flavors all in one. I would say it was my favorite dish in terms the depth of flavors from being sweet to salty to minty. Kyoto($19)- Soy sauce-based ramen is not my go to but however this one really hit the spot on a raining day. It was just the right amount of saltiness and umami flavor I like. Fun and modern vibe for a relaxing dinner. We had six in our party for a Saturday night out. The restaurant was busy. The cocktail menu is very creative and innovative. All the drinks were refreshing. I liked the Matcha Highball. Everyone enjoyed the drinks that they ordered. I have been hearing good things about this place from my friends for a while but finally made it to NR myself recently. I am glad that I did! The drink list has a nice variety of options, and they tell you how sweet, boozy, etc each drink is so that you can get a good idea of what to expect. There are some fun surprises with some of the drinks, such as the Chanel No. 5-inspired cocktail that pours out of a pretend perfume bottle. They leave the bottle with you on the table for refills (into a charmingly tiny glass) until you are finished. I am not usually big on egg salad or any mayo salads in general, but the truffle egg sandwiches were delicious and a big hit with my egg-loving friends. I really enjoyed my ramen and added extra chicken. Our server and Mia at the front were both very friendly. I will be returning. read more

NR's sister restaurant ROKC has unfortunately closed on the West Side so I came to NR for some nostalgia. NR is much larger than ROKC but still serving similar food and cocktails. I stopped by on a Tuesday evening and the restaurant was quiet. NR feels a little out of place in a sleepy neighborhood. If it was downtown, the place would be packed every weeknight. The staff were courteous and friendly. I had a Tokyo Bramble drink which was as good but not outstanding. I opted for the veggie ramen, and it was perfect, just like the ROKC one - served with truffle oil. I lapped it up. I finished my meal with a glass of sake which was dry but not sweet. Overall, NR is a solid restaurant choice and a good option if you miss ROKC. I did like how intimate ROKC felt in their small space. NR does not feel as intimate but you also don't have to line up an hour in advance for dinner -so there's trade offs! read more

Updating my review because I finally came back for the food and thought it was solid overall! I think the drinks are still some of the best things to come here for and the vibe, as it's nice, intimate, clean and such an amazing space to be in, especially for the Upper East Side. Destination spot FOR SURE. The food - we got the curry and the ramen, and both were good, great even, but i think the Japanese food scene is a really tough scene to stand out in especially with as many great options as we have. I'd say the flavors are authentic and they win a ton of points for that at least, and I definitely see myself coming back here from time to time (which I already have been like 5 times). I think one of my favorite bites is their truffle egg sando just because of how creamy the egg is and how deeply that truffle flavor runs through. They also have a very interesting scale for how spicy their curry goes. Make sure to ask about that. If you wanted to, you could really test your spice tolerance! read more

I came here for dinner one evening and was pleasantly surprised by my experience! Located in the UES, this Japanese-fusion restaurant is a delightful find and great spot for a date night. The interior gives off speak-easy vibes and is a lot more spacious than I expected. Service here is pretty quick, friendly, and attentive. Their menu has a wide variety of appetizers and their mains focus on Japanese ramen and soup curries. They also have a unique menu of cocktails that are all so fun (definitely a must-try!). We got their Happy Hour seafood tower, uni ramen, and wagyu ramen alongside a couple of their cocktails. Their seafood tower was delicious and a great deal during HH. I loved their soupless uni and wagyu ramen and both were special in their own way. The wagyu ramen came with bone marrow and was full of flavor and so rich. The uni in the uni ramen wasn't the most buttery, but it was still good nonetheless and I loved the addition of roe and seaweed into the dish. I was really impressed by this place. When you first walk in, the vibe is moody, comfortable and intimate. I went on a Sunday evening, and was able to grab a seat at the bar right away. The bartender was very kind and helpful. I asked for recommendations on everything from my drink, to appetizer to meal, and they gave me an all star line up. I started off with the Pork Bun and it was mouth watering delicious. I then ordered the Kyoto Ramen and it was the best Ramen I've ever had. I loveeee Ramen. We got the miso glazed eggplant as an appetizer, which was good but a bit too sweet for me personally (there was some sort of sweet compote/sauce layered on top). I got the Kyoto ramen, and my friend got the uni dry ramen and a cocktail, which she enjoyed. I thought the ramen was solid - the broth was chicken and soy sauce based so it wasn't very heavy or overly salty. There were two thin slices of pork belly, but I would've preferred the thicker slices I saw in photos in other reviews. Overall a solid spot - glad I came! read more

NR was fantastic! The cocktails were incredible, and we had seats at the bar, so we got to see them being made, really cool stuff. Food was great as well, we had the seafood tower (pictured) and really enjoyed the variety, from a ceviche, to a more "Cajun" style soft shell shrimp, to uni and more. Come before 7pm to get the HH deal too! We each tried a ramen bowl - the Sapporo was creamy and delicious, while the Kyoto had more spice. Both were excellent, and around $20 per bowl. Service was phenomenal, with attentive bartenders and servers checking in periodically, even for bar seating. Not the cheapest meal, but you definitely get more than what you pay for here. I came by NR for brunch on the weekend at exactly 12 pm and I was so excited to checked this place out based on a friend's recommendation. The entire place was super vibey and it wasn't too crowded. The waitress was so pleasant -- she was super attentive throughout out time there and so so cute. NR has a large collection of creative drinks and it was so fun to look through the menu -- quite of few of the names gave us a chuckle. I ordered the matcha highball - it was delicious and very nicely complimented my meal. My friends tried the espresso martini, the Smoke, and the Mango Lassi? and seemed to enjoy all of them as well! We ordered a few different appetizers to share (miso eggplant, deviled eggs, truffle egg sandwiches, chicken karaage with matcha salt). I wasn't disappointed by a single one but if I had to pick a favorite, I would choose the deviled eggs. As for the ramen, I ordered the Sapporo and it was a just a tad bit saltier than I would have liked but I did think it was still pretty delicious. We also got us shots on the house right before we left and the head chef, bartender, and waitress all took a shot with us and thanked us. 10/10 service! I usually get the KYOTO - which is a ramen with soy sauce flavored chicken & FISH BASED BROTH TOPPED WITH PORK BELLY, GARLIC OIL, SOFT BOILED SEASONED EGG, etc. I love this ramen as it is unique with the fish broth and packed with flavor. Also ordered the wagyu and bone marrow soup less ramen which was a surprising delight. Was shocked to taste how delicious the flavors all blended together. It contains wagyu noodles with bone marrow itself, chives, scallion, wasabi, etc. you can understand why it's super pricey once you taste the quality of the bone marrow that was probably slow cooked for hours.
