Run, don't walk, from NOW Security! Having seen a brief but positive notice of the firm in an issue of Connecticut Magazine, we were inclined to hire them to set up a home security system, with monitoring, at our newly-purchased house. NOW's owner came to the house and was very personable, taking time to explain what the company offered. But when the proposed contract was sent to us, we discovered that it would cost more than $500 beyond what a very reputable security firm, also based in Connecticut, was charging for essentially the same service. So we decided to use the other security company, and notified NOW to that affect.
That's when the problems with NOW Security began. A month later, well after the other firm's security system had been installed, I received a bill from NOW Security asking payment of over $1200. In response, I sent an email and a registered letter, explaining (again) our decision not to use NOW, pointing out that no contract had been entered into and no installation of any kind had been undertaken at our house by the company. The email and letter asked for written confirmation -- by email or snail mail -- that we owed nothing. I never received any response from NOW. But over two months later, they sent another bill, claiming we owed them $1200+ and were 90 days past due in our payment! When I called NOW's office twice in the middle of the day, all I could get was an answering service -- nobody was available from the firm itself. Finally after more calls, I spoke with someone who offered a perfunctory apology and promised they would send me the written acknowledgment that we owed nothing. Weeks have gone by and -- no surprise -- it has never come.
Imagine how relieved I am that I am not depending on these guys to handle calls in a true emergency! Perhaps I should have been forewarned by the fact that NOW never managed to get the name of our street correct, even on the baseless bills they kept sending us.
