TDLR: If you want someone to work out the knots in your body, this is the place. David went IN on my muscles and it is the first time I've ever experienced anything like it. We came for a couples massage on a Friday night and I was shocked how many people were coming in and out! The receptionist asked if we had any injuries, but that was it. We didn't profile a preference of male/female. We were taken to our room, and the male came to me and the female to my husband. I thought that was an interesting choice, but didn't mind at all. They both asked us what type of pressure we wanted from our massage and we both responded with "hard". That is exactly what we got! The massage we both received was similar to other people's feedback- nothing that we've ever experienced at another massage place, just different techniques and a lot of pressure. It was everything that you wish a deep tissue massage to be. This man worked every knot possible, I was impressed. I don't know how his hands didn't hurt at the end. While I wouldn't say that it wasn't a relaxing massage, he made me realize areas that had knots that I didn't even know exited. We dropped by about 30 minutes before they closed and luckily they still took us in. 5 stars. Payment: you get a discount if you pay with cash. We paid $128 for the couples 1 hour massage. The massage: this is the interesting part. I'm not sure what kind of massage we got lol. We're used to Swedish. Tonight we got a mix between Swedish and Deep Tissue I would say. The massage was light and then it would get super intense. When it was light I almost wanted to laugh because I felt like I was being tickled. When it was round I was getting someone elbow jabbed into my back. I was kind of cold in the room, I could feel the AC was on. The oil was a little cold but the table felt warm. I was greeted immediately and the receptionist showed me to my room and told me to undress and lay on the bed. Once my masseuse, Leo, came in, he asked me the pressure I'd like and what my problem areas were. I asked for firm pressure and boy did he give it. Yes, At some points it hurt but a good hurt. As soon as he released, I felt instant relief and a wave of lightness. I could tell he mixed in some trigger point/acupressure which was amazing. He focused on my problem areas perfectly and I could feel my knots melt away. I was so relaxed and he gave adequate attention to every section. I walked out feeling amazing! This place is okay. It does the job. The day I went, I had to share a room with a grumpy female customer, and she ruined my experience. I think that room is usually used for couple's massages. They separated our beds with a curtain. I heard her every complaint and grunt, and I hated it. Thank goodness my massage therapist barely talked to me because any more talking from anyone and I would have left. The massage itself was pretty good. The massage therapist used firm pressure. She made sure to ask how the pressure was from time to time in case I wanted her to use more or less pressure. This place is pretty nice inside and offers separate rooms. Just keep in mind that they may put you in a couple's room to be shared with someone else. I ended up coming here when I experienced soreness after exercising--i was able to get a same day appointment on a Friday evening, such a relief! And, the price is quite reasonable especially compared to some other places. I got a massage that was basically a deep tissue massage. Like, deep deep. Came in for a late massage and it was not good. They didnt give me the full time and only had a $5 bill and a $20 bill. So i tried to tip them the $5 and leave but they locked the doors and i was the last appt so i was alone. They asked me to read the sign that requests a 20% tip and demanded more $. I caved seeing as I was alone and locked in and had to ask for my $5 back and give them the $20 bill. I asked for change but they pretended not to hear and just opened the door to let me out. I came to this location many, many times over the last three years that I was living in Arlington. Their prices are great, and Sunny is the absolute best. That said, I made appointments both online and over the phone in which I specifically requested a female masseuse. Back in 2018/2019 before coming here, I had read multiple reviews on yelp in which customers said they requested a female masseuse but were given a male masseuse. For the first couple of times that I came, I did not have an issue. On multiple occasions though, no matter whether I had made the request online or over the phone, I was given a male masseuse (the same one each time.) I don't know what the situation is, but this is unfair both to your female masseuses and to your customers. If you don't want a male masseuse, my recommendation is to mentally prepare yourself to make this clear to the receptionist when you arrive. With this continuing issue in mind, I wouldn't necessarily recommend going here, unless you can get Sunny, even though the price and location is great. read more

Excellent (for the most part) massages, paid extra for the hot stone massage and that portion was the best element of any massage I have ever had. Done extremely well! They also did a wonderful job of covering the entire body and focusing on requested problem areas. Areas of concern: 1. A lot of the rooms face the street (I believe rooms 1-7) and you could hear everything cars, sirens, people talking, which really interrupted the full relaxation of the massage 2. A lot of the technique utilized elbows, I hadn't really encountered this in past massages and I have to admit it was painful, I asked for a bit lighter mid massage but wasn't really obliged, so there were absolutely times when I just wanted it to be over 3. I registered for a couples massage but after we said (prompted) we were sisters, the couples rate was not honored and we were charged the individual rate, which I guess is ok... though I feel couple is more about the shared space and not the relationship status. 4. They validate parking at the $1 lot which is 0.4 miles from the shop and not the lot right next door which is $4 on weekends. It's a nice idea but not really worth the inconvenience. Ultimately, the price was still very good and the experience was worth it. I would return for a light (instead of medium) pressure hot stone massage, request no elbows, and to be placed in room 8 or above. I'm not going to lie, I've had some mixed experiences here - twice have been great, and twice were a miss (but I am partly to blame). I think the key to getting a great massage here is asking for the right person, but if you're new, being very clear about what you want to BOTH the front desk person and the masseuse, and getting confirmation that they understand what you're asking for. The deep tissue I received yesterday was phenomenal. I usually have a harder time finding a good massage place because I don't like laying on my front side and need an extra pillow to squeeze under my neck/arms to support my front side (usually the hardest thing to communicate). I had my massage with a woman named Judy, although I'm not positive that was her name.. there was some confusion and I had a hard time communicating with the front desk woman on whether that was her name. I told them my upper back was my major problem spot, and that I needed about 70% of the massage to be spent there. Then, my calves and arms which were sore from working out. I've always hated massages where they spent too much time in areas that don't feel good/ don't have muscles that need massaging (ie lower back). She spent the perfect amount of time on my upper back like I had asked, and I could really feel the work she put into it. She put in 110% and was easily the best feeling massage I've received. I left her a nice tip and it was more than well deserved. $69 for an hour, $64 if you pay in cash (or was it $65?). read more

After getting a massage last time at Ballston Therapeutic Massage Arlington, I learned from the cashier at the front desk that there is also a branch on the 1st floor in the Ballston Mall across the street, So on the first long weekend in September, we went to this branch for 90 minutes of Couples massage (i.e. 60 minutes body massage + hot stone and 30 minutes foot massage). ) When the massage is complete, we immediately feel the full relaxation of the muscles throughout the body (especially the shoulders, neck and entire back, which I think is due to the use of the hot stone). The walk on both feet is a little lighter than usual. Here are my compliments to both the massagers [ThumbsUp] The massager's massage was very vigorous. We highly recommend this massage shop to friends who love to pamper themselves. This massage shop is really good. They are said to have 5 branches. Recently visited this location on my visit to Virginia to spend time with my daughter. I researched the location on yelp first as well before I booked our appointments. The location has no street parking but there ya a lot nearby. However, The lot nearby is $14 for one hour. Upon arrival, we were greeted right away and requested to complete forms. The receptionist advised at that time, that parking is available in the mall lot for $3.00. They should provide this information on their website. The online booking process was simple and they will text and/or email you to confirm your appointments. The location also offers lots of massage specials and Groupon offerings. The waiting area is very welcoming and calm. The massage room was very clean and serene. I booked massages for me, my daughter and my son. Now here comes the not do good part, the masseuse was not compromising. She asked me to let her know if I felt uncomfortable at any time and as she started digging into my upper back with her elbow I started to feel excruciating pain. I asked her to stop and she continued. I literally had to remove her arm and hands. Needless to say, I am still in pain and I had the massage over two weeks ago. I contacted the location and they offered a replacement massage but I was too afraid. Maybe it was just me, maybe is was the masseuse but I will never go there again. Ballston Therapeutic Massage did the right thing. After my initial experience, they offered a complimentary massage with Leo, the trigger point therapist. Leo is great. Five stars. He's wonderful for those super tight muscles. I left the review at four stars for two reasons. First, my initial experience. Second, they have a practice that varies from most other massage therapy providers. At every other provider I use (I've been to at least five around here), you are shown to your massage room with your therapist. You meet the therapist, and s/he asks about your body and where you would like the therapist to work. Then the therapist steps out, you take off your clothes and you position yourself underneath the sheet. Then the therapist returns and the massage begins. Here, the front desk person shows you to your room, asks about what you put on the intake form, and then instructs you to undress and place yourself face down on the table. You do not really meet your therapist nor do you have a real conversation about your body with the therapist. That's how my first massage started, no introductions, no conversation, and a harsh start with full pressure immediately. I hope they change that practice. Note: I already went back to Leo for a second massage. He is great. read more

I purchased the Groupon a few weeks prior to the appointment and looked forward to the "trigger point massage." Time to work out all of my knots. Just pushing into my back with your palm for longer than one should, applying too much massage oil on my back ONLY and making it a slick mess and hardly massaging the oil in. Maybe 5 strokes from my upper to lower back. Maybe. Never massaging my arms or legs, just pulling twice on my arms and three times on my legs. At some point, I asked him to take his elbow out of my back. How long are you going to leave it there? And, that's not where the knot is located. I've never had to ask a massage therapist to actually do actual massaging. Use your hands, sir. But.......NO. I kept telling myself to get up from the table. I'm still not sure why I didn't. 60 minutes later, I'm furious and I'm also mad at myself for wasting those precious minutes. Now, getting massages is not my first rodeo. It won't be my last. But, I will never visit this location or refer a friend to it. Yes, I informed the front desk person the massage was awful. She offered to have someone else massage me, if I had the time. Initially, I had a rough time locating this place; it is at the back of the 850 N Randolph building, at the intersection of Randolph and Stafford. After a stressful YEAR, it was time for me to get a much needed massage. A close friend recommend this spot and his "girl", Jessica. They are very professional, their spa is absolutely gorgeous, and my masseuse, Lily, did a great job on working the knots out of my back. She said I needed to stop working so hard at the office! In the past, I've been to Massage Envy and paid the yearly contract. I've been to Red Door Salon in Tysons, and i've even had massages at Ritz Carlton in Georgetown. Of course the last two were very expensive and I still didn't have the best massage in the world. Massage Envy is like a clinic. You pay for an hour but they seemed to always short me by 15 mins. If you're someone who values communication with your massage therapist about body issues using appropriate technical terms such as "tight myofascia" and "deep tissue work", "go gently on this spot" then this establishment might NOT work for you. On the other hand if all you really want is a good rub down, preferably by a lovely Asian woman with strong fingers, then this spot might work for you. My therapist gave non-comprehending responses when I told her I had tight myofascia in my legs (the skin-like covering over muscles that can get rigid and cause stiffness and muscle injuries/sprains). She proceeded to giggle when I asked her to go gently. This non-comprehending response to basic communication on body issues is NOT ACCEPTABLE when you are naked and getting treated for said body issues! The therapist also put an enormous amount of pressure on kneading a tight spot on my upper back, which is an aggravating, not a trained, nuanced way of dealing with knots. My problem with this establishment was that due to the communication hurdles, I honestly didn't feel like I was dealing with licensed therapists who offer physiological understanding of body issues and have background in therapeutic techniques. In addition, the coverings, while you are on the table, were not professionally done...seemed more loose. In contrast I felt like this place would work for someone who just wants a thorough rub down. This place is very good, and open late. At my first (and so far only) massage, I saw a man named Kevin. And let me tell you that Kevin can give a proper shiatsu massage. At one point he shared that he lived in Japan for many years, which is where he learned shiatsu. I could really tell that he cares deeply about massage and technique. I bought a groupon for this place since it was right next to my apartment and I wanted to try it out. When I called to schedule my appointment, I could barely understand the receptionist! She couldn't even pronounce "Ballston Therapeutic Massage" correctly. It was fine though, she got my appointment right when I showed up. I went to the bathroom before my appointment and it was nice and clean so I started my session with a good impression of the place. I don't know the name of the lady I had, but she did a really great job! I had been feeling a lot of tension in my shoulders and upper back. Since I don't get massages often, it kind of hurt (and still a little the next day), but felt great afterwards! Since I'm the kind of person who builds up shoulder tension and has chronic back pain, this is a great place for me. They always have deals, so you rarely have to pay full price.
