I am ecstatic to have found a place that performs a service that I have been searching for in the local area. Street parking is free on Sundays. If you are lucky enough you may find parking behind the building. But make sure to pull up to the front and inform the front desk of your appointment at The Teal Center before parking. Upon entering, it was a calm & peaceful environment, which you will experience throughout your visit. I was greeted by a nice front desk lady. Shortly after, Crystal introduced herself and escorted me to my room. It was my first visit, so she went through all of my info and together we discussed pertinent issues. Her bedside manner, the way she speaks, and her therapy session was so calming and refreshing. I learned quite a few things from Crystal that I can implement in my daily life. Nan was great! It was my first massage and she explained everything to me before we got started. Relaxing music and really worked on the areas I asked for. You can't tip on a credit card - only cash or check (no Venmo either). For COVID you need to call to be let into the office. I visit the center regularly for lymphatic massage with Rebecca and have attended classes that were amazing and memorable. Since starting lymphatic massage with Rebecca I have appreciated a much better body condition. Rebecca is one of the most amazing healers I've ever met. She is gentle, caring, and has been so open to learning about my rare disease which causes faulty lymphatic flow throughout my body. Review is based on my experience with Angela's prenatal massage. Added a star for Brenda Teal's taking the time to chat with me (per my request) and attempt to make it better. I booked online/day of and based on yelp reviews specifically for Angela for a 60 minute prenatal massage at 4:30pm on a Monday. Angela called me prior to the appointment to discuss my situation, and then had an "in person consult." Although I arrived 10+ minutes early, and Angela walked by at least once, I was not sitting in the treatment room until 4:30. Although we chatted in detail by phone, Angela went over everything again, what she later called being "thorough." We talked about the (what I thought only, but she decided to add additional for some reason) specific areas (back) I wanted worked on. Next Angela told me said she had to step out to make a quick call, and I could hop on the table. Only after the session did she tell me that she left to call my doctor (it was almost 5pm so of course no one answered/I could have given her the number earlier in the day when we chatted by phone had she told me... or even brought a doctor's note). Really unsure why part of the time I was paying for as a "prenatal massage" including calling my doctor to leave a message anyway? I understand and appreciate this desire to be thorough, however have never had a practitioner dig into the bodywork time for what should be considered part of the consult. It was generously 4:50 by the time Angela started the body work. I started on my right side. I was laying on that side for so long that my right shoulder started falling asleep. Angela proceeded to work on my leg- even though we never discussed doing do, and during this time exposed the front, back, side to side of all my lady parts. I have no problem being nude, but can certainly tell the difference between someone being professional and careless. It made me uncomfortable. Sometime around the halfway? point of our time on the table, Angela loudly asked if I had any questions- extremely jarring and almost felt rude. I've had hundreds of professional massages (varying modalities including at a "wellness center") for decades and and prenatal game has been pretty strong as well. When it was finally time to turn over, Angela worked on this second side for well less than half the time. Felt like we were in the single digits of minutes honestly. Very confusing, especially as I asked for the session to be focused on my back only, as to why we wasted time exposing my cracks (sadly not so my sweet glutes could be massaged, which would have been more than fine) and working on my legs. I asked for an increase in pressure twice, and seemed to be verbally acknowledged, but nothing changed. When the abrupt announcement was made as to the end of the session, I found myself standing at the front desk, dressed and expected to pay at exactly 5:35. Super upsetting, and I conveyed this to the desk person. She sent Angela to speak with me. Angela kept repeating the same thing over and over, she does a thorough check and this is why it cut into the actual massage time (even tho consult time itself is not listed as part of your first session). Dissatisfied Angela walked away, and I asked the desk person if there was someone else I could speak with. I did not feel comfortable paying for a 60 minute "massage" when I received (being generous) 45 minutes of bodywork. Brenda Teal (owner) quickly came out and invited me to chat in her office. I explained to her all of the above, and expressed my disappointment as I was hoping to come back and try many of the modalities offered at the Teal Center. She was kind and understanding, and offered a small discount that I was able to use for the short session. Brenda thanked me for the feedback (that consult time isn't listed as part of the initial massage time... otherwise I would have booked longer etc.) Not sure that I would return, and if I do it's solely based on my experience with Brenda. Mary M is amazing. After three massages I'm a new person. Mary cured problems I've had for years including stiffness in my hip area and a right shoulder that was visible higher than the left. If you're looking for a day spa with amenities like steam room or sauna, you won't find it here. While I have only visited once, my boyfriend tries to visit at least once a month or every other week. Years of extensive computer use and gaming has really damaged his shoulders, hands, and back, and he finally decided to start getting massages regularly to help alleviate some of that pain. The thing I do like about the center is that if a therapist feels like there's someone who's a better fit for you, they do make recommendations for you to see that person. On my first visit, I had Adam as my massage therapist. He was great! I normally opt for Swedish but my neck and shoulders have been bothering me. For an hour massage, the cost was $90. As a person who works in a spa, it is really important to communicate to your therapist during the consultation what areas are your primary concern. If you want a full-body massage in an hour, let them know. One hour, to me, is pretty short, and since I wanted focus on areas that where I had pain, Adam spent the whole time on my neck, shoulders, and scalp. He has a great bedside manner and it is really easy to talk to. I felt awesome walking out of that clinic. As they have a lot of treatment rooms and therapists who make their own schedules, it is really easy to schedule an appointment. Their therapists have studied a variety of modalities so it's pretty much your one stop shop for all types of massage including sports, craniosacral therapy, Thai massage and even acupuncture. However, as with any place that offers massage, Saturdays will be their busiest day. If you have a favorite therapist, I would recommend re-booking with them after your treatment to ensure you have the date and time that is suited for your schedule. read more

I asked about the head massage with Silvia and ended up getting one. I want to give my feedback. I scheduled earlier and the massue, Silvia has only two days of working at this SPA so I had to book early and work around my schedule to make it during the week in the middle of the day. They called to remind me and they provide a reminder card for appointment. It was easy to find the spa. I parked off street and fed the meter. I was right on time - 15 minutes early. I filled the paperwork in advanced and brought it with me. The center offers community lectures and yoga classes some free and some with fees. I found it cool. Silivia was warm and welcoming. The head massage is performed while seated comfortably on a chair with my feet in pillows and surrounded with pillows. She asked me to breath and do body scanning. She did a good job with my shoulders and neck. Also the head massage was good. She is a reiki healer too so her hand were so warm. She gave me a jaw and face massage while I was on the bed. I moved as I asked for giving my face more time. I was relaxed and almost fell asleep. Overall, this is a relaxing massage. Not exactly like the baba barber RIP but is the closest I could get. I am taking one star for the fact the price is really hight. Also, the front desk person is cold as ice and not welcoming as customer service should be. I would appreciate someone who engage and inform the clients with what the center offers. One thing I experienced was a tense in my left shoulder the day after with extra pain! I started coming here during COVID because my previous massage therapist shut down her practice during the pandemic. I was really impressed by the safety measures put in place during the pandemic. It also is very easy to book/schedule online. I saw a few therapists, but Nan is definitely my favorite. I have had craniosacral therapy with her, and each time I leave feeling relaxed and in less pain. She's a very intuitive therapist with a calming presence. I've been coming to The Teal Center for about a year from DC and it's worth the trip. It is easy to book appointments thanks to the helpfulness of the office staff. As for therapists, I've only worked with Mary, and I can't recommend her enough. I feel completely comfortable in Mary's care and look forward to my appointments with her. I got some deep tissue work done here on my legs and lower back during training for a half marathon. I've had many massages before; I'm quasi-ashamed to admit that I delude myself into thinking the cheap places are somehow good value but inevitably they aren't because it's so difficult to communicate and often the therapist has no real training. The Teal Center is not that kind of place; it is branded as being a place filled with people of formal training, proven techniques, and the ability to communicate well. My experience here fell between those two types of places: it wasn't cheap, but it wasn't a glory land of healing either. Perhaps the elevated price caused my expectations to elevate too far. To the (fuzzy as it's been a while) details. The therapist was very nice....she was probably actually too nice and it seemed to resonate in the way she worked on me. When I wanted more pressure, she just didn't seem to have the strength (or the will?) to apply force where I needed it most. (For those who have had IT band issues, you know that heat and a great amount of broad force and repetition is required to do any good.). My second gripe is that even though she spoke perfect English (as a first language), she didn't seem to understand me when I tried to describe the problem areas and how to deal with them. Overall it was decent, but I haven't been back because I found someone that understands more about me and my needs, and is a little more reasonably priced. I have been going to my therapist, Dot Perry for two years now and have been highly impressed by her. She is very versatile and can alter between the standard foofy foof Swedish massage to more intensive work such pulled/sore muscle message and even lymphatic drainage (my personal favorite). I once injured my shoulder muscle and was unable to live my hand over my head for almost a week. I saw Dot and she made it all better by the next day. I also get a sore neck all the time from sitting at a desk - again, Dot saves lives. She is really a holistic healer and wonderful at it. When I was withdrawing off medication, I suffered from horrible side effects. I saw Dot for manual lymphatic drainage treatments and it helped with my overall recovery. She really knows what she's doing. Dot is very popular so I recommend booking in advance. At the Teal Center you have to reserve your spot with a credit card and the cost is $95/hour massage and tip is cash only. The Teal Center is not the Ritz Carleton or the Mandarin Oriental with rose petals on the bed but it is a place where you can allow your body to heal. read more

I went here for cranio sacral therapy. I have post concussion syndrome and many other stress related issues. Krystal ( Crystal) not sure of spelling, was my therapist and I have to say after one session I felt alot better and the pain on the right side of my head has lessened alot. Note: if you're looking for a luxurious day at the spa, this is NOT the place for you. I went because I NEEDED a massage after my very first marathon. Nan knew exactly where I needed work, and when I asked her to press a little harder, she was quick to comply and maintain that even pressure the rest of the way. It's true that you are not allowed to put the tip on your credit card, so bring cash (but for whatever reason, the receptionist was in a good mood the day I showed up, so she let me tip on my card). Like everyone else on here says, it's a no-frills place, and you will be decidedly underwhelmed by the decor in the waiting area. You may even be a little confused about where you are when you first walk into the building (my friend lives here, so it was weird to walk in and get a massage instead of making my way up for dinner, hah). All I know is, I was dying after my race, and after my massage, you'd never be able to tell I'd just run 26.2 miles by the way I was walking about. The soreness did return the next day (as Nan said it would), but I was much less sore than I had been before. Definitely my go-to place for sports massages and worth every penny. read more

I went to the VHC location on 2 occasions and both were underwhelming. I had a prenatal massage, in which the person working on me was afraid to apply pressure to a pregnant woman. On the other occasion, I went to try and get my shoulders worked out (I was constantly hunched over breastfeeding my new baby). Since I was no longer pregnant, i figured the massage experience would be better, but nope. The person who worked on me did nothing in terms of pressure to work out my shoulders. My experience was excellent overall. Like some other reviewers have mentioned, this is probably not the place for you if you are looking for a plush, girly girl retreat. So, if you can look past that, or are looking for a more medically-oriented place to work out the kinks in your back, this place is for you. Although I like more spa-like places, the Teal Center Ballston location was very convenient to where I work, and I was looking for a place that could treat both back stiffness and stress-related tension headaches, so I was willing to forgo a plush atmosphere. I booked a one-hour appointment with Nan, and she was phenomenal. She used a variety of massage techniques, including myofascial, deep tissue, and accu-pressure. It worked wonders for my headaches and overall tension in general. Her technique on my neck, shoulders, and head, was especially good A few downsides. 1. The room that I was in for the massage faced the street, so sometimes I could hear the traffic outside if a horn honked or a large truck drove by. Also, I wish they had room darkening curtains, since the vertical blinds let in a bit too much light. 2. The Teal Center only had a water cooler with those ridiculous small cone shaped cups. I know they don't aim for the spa-like atmosphere, but a fridge with bottled water would have been nice so that I could have taken it with me on my walk back to the metro. Despite a few downsides, I will definitely make future appointments at the Teal Center. read more

I was referred here by my doctor to help manage back pain, and I'm very glad to have learned about it. I've seen a handful of massage therapists at this practice and all of them were helpful. The massages I had here helped significantly, but the therapists would also give me advice for managing my issues in between sessions and one even recommended a chiropractor many of her patients found helpful (and who has helped me tremendously). I appreciate their focus on healing even if it means recommending something that may reduce how often I come to them. Unlike many clinical massage practices, the space here is calm, relaxing and down to earth. It doesn't have a fancy spa feel, though. It can be tough to find them the first time since they're in a building mixed with offices and residences. I recommend parking at the Ballston mall and walking over. read more

I'm also sick of how they stick to every minute of the appointment time at the expense of customers. In the past two Three we had two bad experiences. Acupuncture is underrated and not enough people know about its value to the body. I hadn't been to an acupuncturist in years, about 5 years. I've been carrying a lot of stress, internally, and I happened to read a book that reminded me of the healing powers of acupuncture. I got to yelping for a recommended place to try. I found the Teal Center and visiting the one in the Virginia Hospital Center. The receptionist was very friendly and provided me with a good understanding of what my first session would entail. From arrival to departure, it was about 2 hours. You need to fill out a few forms so they know your background, why you're there, what help you need. Theresa was my acupuncturist and she is a gem. Professionally she's very thorough, spends 30 or so minutes getting a sense for who you are and what she can do to help. On a personal or conversational level, she's got a way of understanding others and you'll end up sharing more than you intended. It's always refreshing to meet someone and feel like you're able to connect. All of the above made me comfortable and confident I went to the right person. The acupuncture was painless, as it should be, and I felt the relief and reward instantly. I couldn't stop smiling afterwards and I've felt significant improvement in my energy, peace of mind, and quality of sleep. The results are different for everyone, but if you're open and communicating to the acupuncturist, you're more likely to have similar results. I think your experience here depends on your masseuse, mine was just okay. I came in for a sports massage the day after a 16 mile run. Given the wonderful yelp reviews, I was expecting just a little bit extra relief from my soreness... especially since the price was more than my usual place. I tried to make a reservation on adam's schedule after the appointment with Jennie. The receptionist got nowhere on the computer after ten minutes, and we both gave up. I didn't make it to church one Sunday, but I made my appointment with Angela Thomas at The Teal Center and found an angel with magic hands. Since it was my first time at the Center, Ms. Thomas sat me down and discussed why I came to her, my lifestyle (where and how I work, how often I exercise, etc.), and any stressors that might have contributed to muscle soreness and tension. She gave me a series of simple exercises to do while sitting and suggested I treat myself to more soaks in the tub. I was really starting to like her! Ms. Thomas was very informative and placed an emphasis on my comfort level. She told me that I was in control of the session and emphasized communication. I was to tell her whether she was applying too much or too little pressure. As soon as she started, I felt totally relaxed. All of my kinks were worked out from head to toe and Ms. Thomas discovered some I didn't even know were there. The bottom line: Angela Thomas and her magic hands worked a serious healing on my tight, knotted muscles. Her knowledge and professionalism made me feel at ease throughout the session. Great experience at The Teal Center. This place is more of a physical therapy center than a resort spa as described by other Yelpers. My husband and I both needed some knots taken out of our backs and decided to give this center a try. We both had experienced practitioners, who according to the website are certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and certified by the Virginia Board of Nursing. We give Adam and Diana 5 stars. The massage rooms are nicely appointed and soft music played in the background. They use a variety of treatments and will consult with you on your areas of concern before your session. Tip: The center is located inside Randolph Towers, which is a mixed residential/commercial building. The Teal Center provides free parking and you will need to check-in at the lobby to secure the parking. If you are new, you should fill out the new client forms in advance to save time. read more

Color me impressed. Recently I started feeling pain all up and down my neck, shoulder and arm from a pinched nerve. The pain from this is the type that doesn't just keep you up at night, but wakes you up in the middle of the night. I went to the Ortho, and started going to PT, but didn't like it that the only thing that could make the pain manageable was pain meds and muscle relaxers. A couple of my friends from softball and hockey mentioned that Acupuncture was the way to go, so out of desperation I started looking and found Teal was well-reviewed. So off to Teal I go, where they provided me an in-depth questionnaire and yes, they still take credit cards at time of reservation and hold a 24 hour cancellation policy. I drew Lisa, a relatively new (to Teal, she had worked elsewhere) therapist who reviewed the questionnaire with me, explained how Acupuncture worked without getting into the mystical Eastern medicine jargon, patiently explained everything and listened as I explained my concerns, and then we began. I can't emphasize enough how awesome it was to find a therapist who actually listened. Win. Bottom line. When I walked in there, I could not turn my head to the left and my shoulder was throbbing. When I left an hour and a half later, I had full range of motion for my head and my shoulder pain had subsided. Parking is a pain, give yourself time to find a spot or better, walk. read more

My daughter goes to Nishanka for CST on a fairly regular basis. Nishanka gets 5 stars. She is the most lovely, caring, and careful practitioner. My daughter felt instantly comfortable with her and the results have been amazing. The new Teal Center space also gets 5 stars... it is beautiful and thoughtful. The actual location gets 2 stars. I loathe the parking situation. My blood pressure always rises when I have to enter the lobby- you never know what kind of attitude you'll be greeted with at the desk, and then you have to pray there is a parking spot available in the back. Otherwise, you spend hours driving around Arlington trying to find parking. A little dramatic, I know, but it really is a hassle. So not to end on a bad note, I highly recommend Nishanka, and i have no doubt the other services provided are just, or nearly, as wonderful. Obviously worth the parking hassle!! read more

I had a wonderful experience here today. I really recommend Patti. She had a gentle firm touch and overall positive energy. I'm pretty picky about pressure but she seemed to just divine the right amount for me. Bonus: the table had a heating pad (perfect!). Overall, the place has a quiet, chill ambience. I called in the morning and they had time the same day. That felt like a lucky break. This is not a spa getaway, it's located in Randolph Towers. Minus one star because parking is crap. There's a tiny parking lot in the back that services the whole building. If you pull around to the front, the front desk gives you a token and you drive to the back lot and enter the lot, however, it could be full at 9:00 on a Saturday morning and then you have to leave and park on the street. My massage therapist was Karin, who did amazing work. She released the tension in my calves and in my shoulders. Just remember to drink lots of water after getting any massage. I wasn't mindful of that the first time and I felt like a Mack truck hit me. Karin is very knowledgeable and does chat with you about what your problem areas are and recommends stretches you can do at home. read more

Absolutely GREAT!! I've been to a few massage therapists and have never been able to say that I was "healed" a few days later. Karin is by far the best massage therapist I've ever had. She knows so much! I dislocated my knee last summer and kept running on it. Well, that injury threw off the rest of me and I ended up really injuring my hip. I went here the day before I was supposed to be going out of town, and I was really worried I was going to have to cancel due to the fact that I had a ton of back pain. Luckily, the Teal Center was able to get me in on the same day, and I met with a woman named Angela. She made really easy suggestions to remedy my back pain, and it turned out her first suggestion was the solution to my problem. After an hour appointment with her and a night of doing her exercises, I was nearly 100 percent the next morning. He's very knowledgeable and can give you a true deep tissue massage with his steel fingers. Many people think they can "dig deep" but a few truly can.
