David and Mike fixed it up and it's running like a champ! SBC for those keeping track. Courteous , professional and knowledgeable.

It was running perfectly other than a bog on acceleration/stall when cold. Dave impressed me by spending 45 minutes on the phone with me listening to the carb symptoms but also offering thoughts about a few other issues I was curious about. We agreed that they'd rebuild the carb and check out a rear end knock - he confirmed via text that the carb rebuild "including reinstall and associated tuning," as I specified, was $700. I asked on the phone if he had a diagnostic fee, and he said he basically just did a diagnostic over the phone, but he charges $500 for a complete go-through of a car. I took note but we didn't go any further with that. When I get there, Ginger at the desk reads off what the work order says, which included "check over car" at the beginning, but I only took that as meaning "look at it" in the ways detailed afterwards. A couple little things were added since our call like replacing a fried battery cable. A week later (after a few snags with the starter, and I okayed the fix), I come back to hopefully pick up a car running as perfectly as before without the accel pump issue, and pay $800-900 or so. The bill was $1,800+, and when I examined it, I saw the $500 complete car go-through was added on, which I never authorized when Dave and I talked about it. Ginger agreed to take it off if I paid for some of the freebies they included (which was fair and I did). Meanwhile, the carb rebuild was $1,200, not $700 - they said the $700 was for tuning the carb, and the other bit was for "tuning the engine" - sounded a bit made up since according to the ticket the "engine tune" was primarily carb-related adjustments, like choke and fast idle. It was specifically for this reason I made sure over text that "all associated tuning" was included in the quote. And after all that, the car was running quite badly and fundamental carb functions were either not working or working improperly (like the fast idle linkage and cam), while the mixture seemed very rich. Everything about the carb (except the accelerator pump) was worse than when I brought it in. To their credit, they rebuilt it again for free, though it still runs like crap at idle and the fast idle/choke linkage still is unreliable. Despite my sending them many videos of how it ran and started consistently before, their defense is "these old cars are fine one day and not the next". I also noticed the throttle response was a bit boggy again, and it's only gotten worse since - which means that perhaps even the original issue wasn't entirely fixed. They were always polite enough (though Dave never spoke a word to me in person) and willing to back up their work, but their work was shoddy - I know this car can run well because I saw it, with no other modifications. My own various attempts to identify rough running causes in my own work (plug gaps, etc.) have yielded nothing and the only thing that changed was their carb rebuild. That plus the sketchy games with the bill left me with a bad taste in my mouth. If they don't know how to tame a Quadrajet, fine, but I'd rather they didn't charge as much for it or tell me up front! All that said, Curtis, who did most of the work and communication, spent lots of time updating me, showing me what he was finding, and explaining what his thoughts were on various issues and their implications. That was very appreciated.
