Summary: Pathetic value for money, small portion sizes, substandard taste & haughty management attitude. Definitely not worth a second visit.)
We (5 adults 3 children) visited on 22nd of October 2016. Wanted to try a different Indian restaurant & so based on reviews, especially the one on Trip Advisor, we decided to try it out. It was a mistake & a costly one.
After spending 20 minutes for a place to park, I finally managed to reach this place. The ambiance was good, the waiters / ushers/ servers were very warm, cordial & well mannered. It did not smell of your typical Indian curry smell, though the fumes from the frequently served sizzler trays were an occasional annoyance. The furniture and decor is pretty much all in good shape and condition and that's where the good experience ends
Let's talk about the menu. There was very little choice on the menu however from experience that could mean extremely great quality of food with great attention to detail on every dish. Well, this was not the case. The name is misleading as well. I thought Not Just Curries would mean and experience out of the ordinary but that's just a fallacy.
Entrees: Let me start from the entrees/starters. The portion size was small for a gathering of 6-7 people and that's the reason we ordered more entrees. Chilli chicken in particular was off, smelt different and we had to leave it unconsumed. Out of all the entries the only one acceptable was the Adraki Lamb Chop. Rest of the starters were absolutely below par. They might taste good to an unsuspecting customer who has no clue about Indian cuisine & doesn't know the difference between Chicken Tikka and Masaala Chicken. However for a person with a good taste of Indian food or a one looking for authentic Indian food, this is a far cry & a complete disappointment. The portion size is too small compared to the upmarket pricing. I'm amazed to see how people are paying the price given the fact that around this restaurant there are Indian restaurants galore, serving much better food than being served here.
Presentation: In my opinion, small menu equates to good quality food with an equally amazing presentation .However the presentation was absolutely sub standard. We serve food with a better presentation even in our homes. The plates were your typical $2 Kmart plates totally & a substandard scratchy cutlery. You would be looking for a better experience for the money you are paying.
Moving on to the main course - again the portion size vs price was a mismatch. Most of the main course was a big dampener. Frankly, if an Indian restaurant gets Rogan Josh wrong, it's a pity. It's just like an Italian restaurant getting a simple pasta dish, wrong. The Rogan Josh almost tasted like goat curry & we had to send back the same and get lamb curry instead. The torture continued - the goat curry and the goat pieces were never married together. It seemed as if the goat pieces were thrown into the curry at the last moment and heated up. Again, that taste might be acceptable to people who have no clue about Indian food, however that's a slap in the face when it comes to Indian food. The lamb pieces were more chewy than a Porterhouse steak cooked well done.
Another joke was a dish called Delhi Style Butter Chicken (hot), which basically, is supposed to be a spicy version of the good old Australian butter chicken version. For some amazing reason, they manage to get this wrong as well. It was hardly spicy and tasted more of tomato curry than a blend of all the flavours which normally emanate from the good old butter chicken. (A message to all my Aussie mates: 90% of Butter Chicken served in Oz is the fake version)
The curry base of the 'Methi Murg' a green herby chicken was ok, but it was apparent that the chicken pieces were thrown into the pre cooked base at the last moment and were pinkish on the inside. Nobody ate that and was wasted.
We really love our bread in an Indian restaurant, however it was a disappointment as well. The 'Lachha Parantha' was too thick and undercooked in the centre. It was apparent that the guy manning the tandoor ( clay oven) was either inexperienced or was churning out food too fast.
The service was very fast and that's where lain the main problem. Food was sent out very quickly in order to keep the tables moving at the cost of quality. But thats not an excuse. Most restaurants are busy on a Saturday evening. There is not even a single dish that was worth remembering.
The Chai or Indian tea in the end was in the last series of pain and torture. It was sweet beyond compare and almost served as a dessert. It was definitely not made fresh & was apparently stored & poured from a storage container .To all of you who have been there and think that's the real Chai - I assure you it's not.
I do not know whether restaurants normally charge a cake serving charge, however they charged us $8 for 8 of our guests (kids included) because we cut a cake there. I have never been charged read more
