For the institution that this place is to drunken Oxford Street denizens, I'm a little shocked to be the first to review on Yelp...
This spot is open late, sometimes I think I'm walking by past midnight and it's still even open, although technically I think their hours say 12am for closing most nights. I'm sure that's part, although not all, of the reason why it's such a great place to wind up before, during, or after your drinking rampage, or otherwise at odd hours of the night when you crave Indian and/or nothing else is open.
Their food is all waiting in the hot plates under heat lamps, and that would normally put me off except that if you have been in there as many times as I have, you'll see how often they replenish the serving dishes and how fast the food goes, as they cycle a large number of customers in and out all day long. Rice and naan are both must-have accompaniments to your selection of one, three, or more "curries." Curries is what they call any and all of the main options, including at least a half dozen vegetarian dishes like dal (lentils), mushrooms, palak paneer, among other classics like butter chicken or masala (chicken or goat). I've also tried the fried starters like samosas, which were a bit dried out and bland for my taste. Most options will cost you less than $10 a person for a heaping plate of food.
There's no table service, but there's cups and a giant jug of water to serve yourself from in the back. Tasty and thick mango or rose lassis as well as a limited selection of beers and wines are available at the counter, but I've also seen people BYO so I'm not sure if there' s a corkage fee or if they just know their market and don't object. There's also a selection of newspapers and magazines around so it's a comfortable spot to come in and eat by yourself if need be. I wouldn't come here for a date or a fancy meal, but I've come here hungry and left happy many times before. read more
