When I arrived in WNY from NC, I began to have car issues. Northtown serviced my car June 2. I explained the issues to the service advisor and that I needed the car to be in working order for my return trip to NC. Northtown had my car for two days, replaced 4 front bushings, sway bar links, and did an alignment. While driving out of the dealership lot, I noticed my steering wheel was off-center. This is something the service tech should have noticed as the car was being driven out of the service bay. I contacted the service advisor who asked me to bring the car back, so the car could be realigned. On my trip back to NC, I still had car issues. I took it to a mechanic in NC who indicated the control arm bracket on the right side was not tightened at all. The thought of having driven over 700 miles, with an issue that could have potentially caused me to lose steering and lead to a catastrophic outcome is very unnerving to say the least. I am extremely disappointed with the service technician who handled the car repairs and that there was absolutely no oversight to be sure I had a safe car to drive. read more

Where do I start off. I purchased my alleged "certified pre-owned" 2018 Outback in July 2021 with an extended warranty. This is my first Subaru. Within 2 weeks, I broke down because something hadn't been tightened properly with my brakes. Less than 2 months later my car wouldn't start because the battery was bad. As of today, I have been in there a minimum of 12x's. Everything from my window not working, to my ball joints. After the first 3 months they started trying to charge me to fix these random issues I kept having, they made me feel like they were doing me a favor by "waiving" charges to fix these issues. In Jan of 2023 I had enough. I complained and they offered to have a sales rep call me about getting rid of this vehicle. Never got a phone call and I didn't want to deal with it anymore. Fast forward to now, and more problems, is the most irritating and recent issue. Front driver side making noises. I bring it in, it's the ball joints. Great. Paid my deductible, went about my life. Working 2 weeks the same noise. Bring it back, now it's the tie rod. what?? Again, tried to do me a favor by "waiving" me paying my deductible again. Go to pick it up, I finally start paying attention the charges to my warranty (my fault for not doing this prior but I also don't know half of what's on these invoices). Over $7,000...$7000!!!! Charged to my warranty for things I didn't even know were broken like the CPU! I complain, they sit me down with a sales rep who will " do everything he can to take care of me and make it right". That (his words) " sometimes you just get bad cars"'. Mind you at this point I've already paid about $9,000 into this car. The rep looks through my history. He's taken aback. Wow, you have been here a lot. He says. Let me talk to my manager. I'll get back to you. We want to do everything to fix this. He calls me, the joke of an offer he gave me wasn't even KBB value. Still leaving me in the hole Over $7,000. This was such a lowball offer I was blown away. I am so glad that everyone else has had such good experience with Northtown, but to me this place is such an incredible rip off. I would never in my life again purchase another car from here, and I never will recommend this place to anyone else. And the kicker is? My front driver side is making the same noise again, which I'm limited to where I can go with my Subaru warranty. They seemed to feel it was not a huge issue so off I went. Then the light came back on. So back I went. The car was dropped off at 8:00 AM on 9/7/24. we had an appointment We waited for a call to let us know when the car was ready. After five hour, we attempted to call. The mechanic was working on another car and would need to call us back. After waiting another hour we drove back. After 6.5 hours, we were told that the part was back ordered and our car did not have an oil change. We left very frustrated with the lack of communication and service. read more

DISSATISFIED with this unethical dealer! My daughter purchased her 2014 Subaru Legacy from Northtown Subaru in March of 2022. Within 2 days, her check engine light came on and her battery was dead. We brought it to the dealer where they changed the battery, simply reset the check engine light and sent her on her way. The summary of the service only referenced the changing of the battery, no reference to the check engine light. 2 days later the check engine light comes back on. We called their service department and they assured her it was not a safety issue. As the weather got warmer, she realized the AC was not working. She brought it back to their service department where they repaired the AC and they noted the check engine light was on with a code pointing to the catalytic converter. They claimed they didn't know why the light was on, reset the check engine light again and sent her on her way. Of course 2 days later the check engine light comes on and stays on. THIRD TIME! Fast forward to this year, she tries to get it inspected at another shop and will not pass with the check engine light on. The code is still referencing the catalytic converter so I return to the service department with her where they say it needs 2 catalytic converters $6,600. I asked that they do the right thing since they were aware of the check engine light / cat. con. problem from the beginning. They initially refuse to help out at all so I start looking into all the paperwork. Turns out the service department tried inspecting the vehicle the day before my daughter purchased it and it FAILED the emissions test as vehicle's onboard onboard computer system was not ready to be tested. This happens when the check engine light is recently reset. Again, more proof that Northtown Subaru was aware of an issue with this vehicle. After further investigation, turns out the previous owner had brought the vehicle to this dealer a month prior to my daughter purchasing it with check engine light problems. What a surprise?!?!?! Subaru America has offered to cover 50% of the repairs, the dealer Northtown Subaru has offered nothing, but as the vehicle was misrepresented right from the start, anything less than a full refund would be scamming a young student. Prior to this experience, I would have recommended getting the CARFAX report but seems the repairs and reported problems with vehicles at this dealer do not make it to a CARFAX report. read more

I bought a 2014 Subaru Forester from Northtown Subaru this month and couldn't be happier with the entire process. John Klein helped me from beginning to end and even followed up with a box of thank you chocolate chip cookies which were much appreciated. His level of professionalism even with my mom's difficult negotiation tactics was impressive. The Subaru is everything I could have wanted and much much more - for a good price as well. I do wish I could have gotten more for my trade in but understand it was a hunk of junk and is probably in the junkyard as I type this. We told him we were looking at a cross trek limited and had previously purchased our Subaru at his dealership and was our salesperson there ( no longer) . After coming up short at Notthtown Toyota I was referred to Northtown Subaru for a larger vehicle selection. I looked online and called to see if the ones I liked were available. I went to check out a Mazda3 which was a nice drive and had everything I needed. While doing the paperwork, I told the salesman Kevin P I'd be going through my own credit union which he responded with an offer to get a loan with them at the same rate and the process would be much quicker since my classes start that Monday (5/23/22). I added a 3 year extended warranty on because as mentioned previously, I can't risk being without a car. He was was very nice and assured me it would be throughly cleaned and checked through to make sure it was ready to go by 5/23. The next day, I receive a call saying they can't match the rate, and I'd have to go through my own bank. I normally wouldn't have cared, but if that was the case I could have gotten the paperwork together from my bank and started the process already. I was told I can pick up my car on Wednesday 5/27 and showed up with all my papers from the bank and insurance ready to go. After handing the check over, he said it wasn't enough and went back through the papers and realized he messed up the buyers agreement he sent to my bank and it didn't have the warranty added. I assured him mistakes happen, and I told him i'd think about adding it on and asking my bank to write me another check. After driving away and getting home, I went to lock my door with the FOB and it didn't work. The keys I received had a dead battery. I grabbed my spare key and found the key wouldn't flip out without wedging it with a toothpick. The next day I was getting ready to leave and dropped my phone in between the seat where I found straw wrappers, receipts, etc. No problem, maybe the detailers missed it, mistakes happen. After leaving and driving I tried to roll down the passenger side window and it was stuck and wouldn't roll down. How is this possible if it was checked thoroughly? A week later while driving, a horrid banging noise comes from the rear end over every little bump (In WNY that's everywhere!). I called and told them the problem and they said they couldn't get me in for a week and a half. I told them I just purchased the vehicle and I don't want it getting worse so after getting the run around a lady told me to call Monday and see if any loaner cars were dropped off and drop my car off on Tuesday. I'm writing this on that Tuesday in the back of a courtesy shuttle going home and missing class and work because Subaru said I had to go to Mazda, and Mazda said I have to go to Subaru and when I arrived they said they don't know what i'm talking about and they can't loan me a car. The run around being played on the phone was extended to in person which is unreal. I'm not one to complain but when I was assured the car would be checked throughly and I find trash between the seats, keys don't work, and windows don't roll down. It leads me to believe they have the three blind mice checking my vehicles mechanical components as well. I figured I'd get peace of mind through a dealership but that couldn't be further from the truth. I've had experiences 10x better and easier going through a private seller. All in all, the salesman were nice and seemed to be trying, but it seemed to all be a facade. UPDATE: After bringing my car in the mechanic called me and told me the one shock broke and the other looked terrible. Although they fixed it out of "good will", I'm not sure how that was overlooked in their "thorough" examination of the car before selling it to me. read more

Upon getting an oil change, inspection, and some recalls taken care of the other night I came to notice on my drive home a large grease stain (about 6 inches in length) on the drivers side A pillar of my vehicle. Most likely from when the new inspection sticker was applied. Not that this is the end of the world by any means, but when you are paying a decent some of money at the dealership, taking it to the place where you bought it to get it maintained you would come to expect a little bit more. Ultimately I was able to get the stain out after about a half hour of scrubbing, but for all the other people out there's sake moving forward, just have your staff be a bit more careful. I bought 2 cars here, a 2012 Legacy and a 2017 Forester. Got a pretty bottom line price for my trade-ins both times. But the real problem was the service. Simple things would require repeat visits. For example, the air conditioning in the Legacy was constantly leaking refrigerant. But, despite the lack of cold air, they kept telling me it was working fine. I finally took it to Monro and they had it working in an hour. They also insisted that a car with less than 25,000 miles needed a full set of brakes and pads. A year later, I was told the front brakes wouldn't pass inspection. In short, I wouldn't take my car here for service even if I bought it here. read more

I brought my vehicle in 5 times in 6 weeks for an issue, each time having to leave my car for 5-7 hours yet they were unable to fix the problem. I suggested leaving my car for however long they needed to fix it and have them provide me with a loaner. They declined. I felt stuck because repairs were under warranty and by the time I wanted a second opinion at West Herr, I couldn't. The vehicle drove worse with each fix, to the point where I no longer felt safe to drive or keep it. (Transmission was noisy, had acceleration issues, and vehicle would stall despite being an automatic.) Because of the issues, my trade value was affected. It was unlatched by the time I got into northtown. since then I've tried numerous times to get on the phone with service and either you get directed somewhere else or your put on hold forever.I went in yesterday to talk to somebody and service and the person at the desk was playing on her phone and said oh you have to make an appointment. Service department experience is poor at best. Managed to explode a car of fix it flat in my car by accident. Cleaned it up, but the car smelled terrible for a week even with leaving the windows open. Then most recent trip mechanic tampered with my dash cam yesterday. Noticed my dash unplugged this morning. When I called and spoke to Kevin O'Neill the manager he wasn't concerned. He said they do that all the time for insurance reasons (but they usually ask the customer first). I have the camera for insurance reasons. If you're driving my car responsibility and keeping it on Northtown property you shouldn't be concerned that your driving is being filmed (person driving isn't being filmed). I just happened to notice the morning after that it was unplugged no telling how long I might have driven with it unplugged. If I had gotten into an accident while the camera was unplugged I'd be suing Northtown for the lost footage. read more

Their service department has the WORST service ever. Don't go! Even if it's your closet service department, drive further! I will be! First the guy told me not to bother fixing it since the engine light was off at the moment. I waited a week for the appointment and he told me they wouldn't find anything with no code. I even told him the codes! I have a scanner. Codes don't diagnose the problem..looking at the car does! The engine light turned on the moment I pulled out of their garage. I drove around and pulled right back in the garage. He said they would call in an hour with the issue...no call. I called 3 1/2 hours later and I was put on hold for 20 minutes. I eventually hung up and called back. He said it would be done in an hour and they would call but they never called again. I went in to pick it up an hour and a half later since I figured it had to be done by then. I was behind a woman who was dropping off her car. They asked for the next person picking up their car and I raised my hand. They helped the person who came AFTER me (we were standing in a line). The woman in front of me said out loud so they could hear that I was next. She was even upset for me! When I finally got to talk to somebody, the same guy from earlier insulted my warranty plan when I asked if they accept it. Even the guy working next to the guy helping me tried to make the guy helping me not be so rude and was standing up for me saying it wasn't bad (speaking up multiple times). I know it's not bad, I have a mechanic friend who said it's the best one. It's just not the one they sell. I never even asked him his opinion. I just asked if they accept it. I wasn't even using it that day. My repair was covered under factory warranty. Hours after I went home, I received an email that was scheduled for an appointment 6 months from then. I would NEVER set one because I already knew I wasn't ever going back. I tried contacting customer service by email...no answer. They sent a survey and it gave no room to write my issues. No response. This was such a joke. I will never go back. They don't care about customers at all. I didn't buy my car from there but I was planning on using them for service since they're the closest. Not anymore! I just can't believe that the guy who helped me that day is still employed! He was such a horrible person. read more

The last 2 times I've taken my car in for service I've had issues. The most recent (in May) I told the service department I was getting ready for a road trip that would be a few thousand miles and wanted everything in good shape before hitting the road. I told them that my tire pressure light was on, I knew at least one had a slow leak and thought I might need new tires. The person I was working with said they fixed the leaks and I shouldn't need new tires until the fall/ snow. I'm now on that road trip, about 500 miles since the appointment, and the tire pressure light has come back on. I took it to an auto shop where I am and am now replacing the tires after the mechanic showed me the treading which made it clear I need new tires. A service appointment before that they charged me to remove the heat shield and rotate my tires. Not only did they not remove the heat shield the first time (made a very annoying noise so was easy to tell) but one of the tires wasn't tightened so I had to go back in worrying that a tire was going to fall off. Needless to say I will never be returning to this dealership. read more

This review is for the service department at Northtown Subaru. I bought my 2018 outback there and had no problems with the sales department or the buying process. Back in October, I called Northtown because there was a rattling sound somewhere in the dash. They told me to bring it in, and they set me up with a loaner because it would take some time to locate the sound. When I didn't hear back from them after a few days, I called to see what was going on, and they said they were still working on it. They had it for about 2 weeks total, but I kept having to call them for updates. Finally, on Halloween, I was told they couldn't locate the sound and I should come pick up my car. When I came in the next day, at the time we agreed upon, my car was not ready for me and I had to wait for a tech to "find it in the lot". After I drove away I realized they had left something on my back seat, which I later learned was a lower dash kick panel. I was told that they were going to call a Subaru regional engineer, and I'd get a call back soon, when they had his schedule so I could bring my car back for him to take a look at it. I'm still not sure if this person even exists. It's now February, and I'm still waiting for that call about this regional engineer. I've called a few times between then and now, and a receptionist always told me that my point person was busy or out to lunch, and he'd call me back... he never did. I haven't heard from anyone since November. Thanks for nothing, Northtown. Finally, I got fed up with waiting, and called West Herr Subaru. They took some time with the car, but eventually found and fixed the rattling problem (without the help of a regional engineer...). I wrote them a glowing review, you can see it on their yelp page. If you need to get your car serviced, I would never recommend Northtown. You'll be left frustrated and disappointed. read more

Today, I dropped my car off at the dealer for a complicated issue I was hoping to have diagnosed. I was annoyed to find that I was to be charged a diagnosis fee when I can walk into any auto store and check my codes for free, but I assumed more would be done to assure that the codes were telling the whole story and that we understood everything that was happening. I was impressed by how clean the facility was, that the mechanics were well dressed and professional, and that the waiting area was stocked with coffee. Because we live in the city, we share a car and we loved that they offered a shuttle for us. But all of that became useless pretty quickly when we waited for 2 hours with a one-year-old for said shuttle to arrive (after ordering it in advance and initially hearing "20 minutes"). We then listened to two staff people argue about who should have taken us for quite some time, but at least we weren't stranded, right? We were told we'd hear in the afternoon, and when we hadn't heard anything by 4:30, we decided we'd call. Annoyingly, the mechanic I spoke to after being on hold for 15 minutes told me the basic contents of the codes we already knew and information we told him. When I asked if he knew more about a specific part of the codes involved, he told me there was no way to know, they hadn't looked at it and that they'd need to charge ANOTHER diagnostic fee to do so. I was annoyed, asking why I hadn't been called, why I had waited so long to hear. He claimed he called and left a voicemail, while my phone and voicemail list clearly show nothing. The claim that a mechanic can be dishonest is certainly not false. And if he'd (rudely!) lie about a phone call, where is the limit? I will never go to this dealership again. They are expensive, rude, and not at all thorough, adding to the expense. I will not shop for my next car here, and I will not get another repair done here. read more

Horrible! Took over two hours for a scheduled oil change. I don't like to complain, but seriously a schedule simple oil change should never take two hours. When I asked why it was taking so log the staff was rude and acted as if it was acceptable for it to take so long. Horrible service, and would not recommend unless you enjoy waiting ridiculous times and then deal with rude customer service. I came here to take care of a minor outstanding recall situation, not to actually buy a car or get anything more than necessary done to it. So I feel like my experience is probably a little unique and might not apply across the board. Because I don't use them for stuff, checking my car in took a little while. They actually had to run out in the pouring rain to get my VIN (they should have asked, I have a picture of it on my phone). At that time they also told me I need new tires. When I let them know that my regular mechanic told me the same and I was getting them through him, they got a little pushy about it and insisted they had the lowest prices. Which may be true, but there's something to be said about loyalty and convenience. My appointment was for 10:05 am the next day and when I asked when it would be ready (so I could prep a ride) I was told probably around 2 or 3, which seems quite long for a quick check. But they were true to their word and called a little before 3 to tell me it was ready. When I picked up the car I barely interacted with anyone. They asked which car was mine, drove it around, handed me a stack of paperwork and asked if I had questions. I guess not? I read through the paperwork when I got home and it said what they did and included a 20-something point inspection telling me I needed a few things like a brake fluid flush and new tires. But bonus points for not trying to sell those services to me after I said I have a regular mechanic. I'll be sure to bring their sheet with me when I go for tires next month! So true to their word on time, not overly sales-y, and pretty straightforward. And clean. PS There was a lounge and shuttle service, neither of which I took advantage of. read more

I'm surprised to find such a mediocre (3 stars) rating for this place. I guess most of us would only take the time to write a review when we are motivated by a bad experience, though. I've taken my 2015 Forester here the past several years and these guys always impress. Today for example, I had some water leaking from the AC and dropped it off without an appointment. They figured it out pretty quickly, fixed the problem at no cost, and had my car back to me within a couple of hours. They even replaced the inspection sticker on my car registration sticker on my windshield without me asking (I'd been meaning to do it!) and gave my car a wash before handing it back to me. 5 stars all around. read more

What a great car buying experience from Northtown Subaru! My wife and I were debate getting a new car since my Honda Pilot was 6 years old and paid off. Got an amazing trade in price for it and got a good credit offer and monthly payments right where I wanted them. Everyone was super friendly as well. I wound up getting a 2016 outback 2.5 limited which is an amazing piece of machinery. Great handling, lots of great tech gadgets, the car feels solidly made unlike other brands out there, and it looks great too. I highly recommend this dealership and car brand. ***Update- their service department is amazing as well! I was in and out 30 mins for an oil change and tire rotation. I love this place. They might not have the best waiting area but the maintenance and service staff are very professional, courteous and friendly. My oil change or mileage maintenance is usually done in 20-30 minutes. I go here because they know Subarus and I trust them. They don't push extra services on you but will give you the information for other services. Prices may be a little higher - a synthetic oil change is about $70 (I got a coupon in the mail for $50 so that was much better). read more

Buying a new car is a challenging experience. I was looking for a specific vehicle that was not in stock in the Rochester area, but I was able to find one at Northtown Subaru and negotiated a deal before driving to Amherst to complete the purchase. The knowledgeable, friendly and professional staff even suggested that I walk to Duff's nearby for a few wings while the paperwork was completed. John Klein and his manager Brian helped us through the process of buying out first car together. We went in and got exactly what we wanted and they were able to help us stay within our means. They were both very kind and they didn't get pushy or make us feel like we didn't know what we were talking about, as car salesman usually do. Even when we ran into an issue (the shop accidentally cleaned and detailed the wrong car for pick up), John immediately came to us, apologized and even ended up buying us dinner while we waited for the correct car to be detailed.
