Stumbled upon this adorable coffee shop on a recent trip to Minneapolis. The plan was to pop in, grab a coffee and go. Instead we stayed for a few hours. The store is adorable and a great place to meet a friend or get some work done. After ordering some caffeine we realized they had a small food menu and decided to get breakfast as well. They were sold out of their regular biscuits so I was easily convinced to try the basil biscuit. It was delicious and was a great compliment to my tea. This downtown coffee shop has partnered with fruit and grain this past year to offer her Pastries, they are so good and I highly recommend trying her selection if you haven't, they are allergy and intolerant conscious. The coffee i had was their regular blend of the day. It was good. We showed up at 8:59 and they opened at 9. Upon entering the staff seemed less than thrilled that we were there to order. This place is some kind of incredible. So far I've tried four things, in order: their orange lavender latte, their decaf orange lavender latte, their chai latte, and their yeast raised waffles with 'the works'. The thing is, I worked at Starbucks for a year, and in that year I dedicated myself to learning as much as I could about coffee. While I'm no Coffee Master (I was almost one, though... ALMOST) I would say that I became significantly -- intimately, even -- acquainted with coffee. Coffee and I ended up on a first name basis. Coffee and I told inside jokes that only we laughed at. Coffee and I began to understand each other deeply. One day I woke up from a nap, only to find that coffee had lovingly draped a blanket over my shoulders so I wouldn't get cold. My heart fluttered, and not from the caffeine (truthfully... it might have been the caffeine). All that build-up to say this: I like to think I know a little something about good coffee, and they have now -- twice -- given me the best latte that I've ever had in my life. I'm not being sponsored by them to say this, but boy do I wish I was (Coffeeworks, if you're listening and open to retroactive sponsorship...). I also like to think I know a little something about good chai lattes. I'm definitely no master of masala chai -- I'm so very American, and still have so very much to learn about tea in general -- but I HAVE been purposefully visiting every local cafe I can and trying their chai, because I love chai, and... again. They gave me the best chai I've ever had in my life. I don't know what sort of demon deal they signed to make this place a reality, but oh my god. Gals, guys, and nonbinary pals... come visit this place. Multiple times. The deets: The coffee was the smoothest coffee I have ever tasted. Before drinking it, I honestly wasn't even aware that I'd been missing out on some secret, elevated level of coffee. Some of my previous coworkers were district Barista Championship winners, so I'd been acquainted with dang fine coffee... and yet. This was genuinely next level in a very subtle but very present way. The latte art was beautiful, too. I don't know if 's the locally sourced beans or the house-made syrup, if they have special machines or if their baristas are just that good. That said, the one criticism I do have (sourced purely from my own taste buds) is that the decaf espresso tasted more astringent in a way I really didn't love. They use different beans for each respective roast, so I'm not surprised it tastes different -- I just don't like the decaf beans nearly as much, which is tragic, as I'm pretty sensitive to caffeine. But alas, we must all make sacrifices for the things we love. Next up, the chai. There was no latte art on this, I think because the drink itself is so white, but the taste... oh boy. It was nothing but smooth, creamy, frothy spice, and it was perfect. And finally, the yeast raised waffles. The presentation on them was impossibly Instagram worthy, and the yeast added this tiny, sharp beer-like bite that gave it a hint of uniqueness. You're not given a separate syrup to pour on them -- you get the amount that comes out on top of them, although I'm sure they'd be happy to indulge you if you asked for more -- but the minimal amount paired with the natural sweetness of the berries, nuts, etc actually ended up tasting pretty perfect. The service was speedy, as well. I was quoted a ten minute wait for the waffles since there was someone in front of me, and I ended up waiting about four. The chai, meanwhile, came out almost immediately after I sat down. It actually left me a little uncertain about the quality -- but then, of course, I tasted it. That uncertainty lasted until the first sip. read more

After lunch stopped by to get some coffee. The place is soo cute! They have great seating. But it gets packed pretty quickly, i sat by the windows. The coffee here is good. I had an iced coffee and my companion, an Americano. There was no seats when we got here so ordered to go. Ended up standing at the bar area (they serve alcohol here too! ) to drink our coffee and survey the environment. This cafe channels a trendy hipster vibe. The decor is minimalist and the chairs have a Nordic aesthetic. A bicycle is hoist atop the seating area as part of the decor, some abstract art pieces hung on the walls and there are shelves with all sorts of merchandise like mugs, pencils, water bottles, etc for sale. I like that they use and sell handmade pottery namely by Mary Carroll and the company HAAND. Each table has a charging station so there were many students working on their laptops. The Viking just finished playing so many supporters were here too. I can only say that this place was busy and loud but the counter service was fast and for a good cuppa, worth coming in. read more

The coffee is soooooooo smooth. I am from out of town but I stop here whenever I visit because it's so delish. I like the vegetarian breakfast hash which seems to change depending on what is in season. My favorite drink is the latte which I chose to add the house citrus and lavender flavor. Not too sweet and added a nice twist. The atmosphere is great if you need a place to sit and get some work done. I think they recently expanded. It rises to the top for me because, first and foremost, their coffee drinks are consistently excellent. They use quality products and great equipment, and they craft the drinks with skill and care. And this excellence carries over to their other beverages and their food items. I've enjoyed their drinks and food over many visits, and I've not seen a misstep yet. Pleasantly surprised by Northern Coffeeworks which was located right up the street from my hotel in MSP. You can sense the care in the coffee with homemade syrups and wonderfully crafted breakfast items. This morning I ordered the seasonal hash skillet which was lightly seared seasonal root vegetables topped with an egg. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and pair very well with mustard grains and a parsnip purée. As for the coffee I opted for another orange lavender latte which was heavenly. We stopped by northern coffeeworks on a Sunday morning before church. My fiancé got the Americano which he said was good but borderline a bit too strong. I got a vanilla latte which was quite tasty. Finally, people who do coffee right! I no longer have to suffer through mediocre pulls of espresso using mediocre coffee from other nearby places anymore. This is also within walking distance from my miserable soul-sucking office job, so thank you, for being a small ray of happiness in my otherwise "God help me-I work for douchebags" kind of day. For an avocado toast serving hipster cafe, it doesn't feel pretentious, and the staff is really welcoming and helpful. They use Intelligentsia, Ruby, and Sweet Bloom beans. Their house made cookie, their sausage biscuit, and gravlax are great. Finally, as a Californian who has learned the hard way that overt emotions in Minnesota makes you come across like a weirdo, I am quietly and surreptitiously giddy that this cafe exists. Angry Catfish was a pioneer third wave coffee in Minneapolis, introducing Intelligentsia beans to the Twin Cities' coffee lovers. The same people have now opened a larger space in DT West. This means two things: 1) you can expect to have good coffee, 2) you can expect that bikes are part of the store's theme! The interior is designed tastefully​--a very pleasant combination of tiles, wood, and bricks. The plates and cups are also very gorgeous. There are outlets everywhere, if you want to work or study there. There are however two issues with this place, making me reluctant to visit as often as I'd like to: 1) there is no dedicated parking lot (make sure you do not park in the lot behind the building, it doesn't belong to the coffee shop). 2) they have an open kitchen where they prepare delicious dishes that sometimes involve cheese. The ventilator doesn't work as well as it should and the smell of burned cheese doesn't let you enjoy the aroma of your nicely prepared coffee. I'm not nitpicking. It's not an insignificant issue. Without having a pleasant olfactory experience, it's hard to enjoy your coffee. Also, since the olfactory memory of the place involves grilled cheese and not roasted coffee, when you search your mind for a good place to drink coffee, it is not the first place that comes to mind. read more

Can my review just be "YAASSSSS"?! After a long night out that consisted of a few too many drinks, my travel companion and I hurried in here on a Sunday morning ready for some comforting food. And boy did this place not disappoint! I chose the special - a savory waffle topped with two perfectly cooked eggs and bacon jam - and accompanied it with an iced sparkling plum-ginger oolong tea. My companion had one of their biscuit specials and a coffee with milk. Everything was downright delicious. I've never seen or eaten a more perfectly cooked waffle. The bacon jam was a little sweet, and a very rich addition, which paired beautifully with my runny-yoke eggs. Comfort food at its finest. My companion's biscuit sandwich was delicious too, and I stole a bite of the biscuit that tasted homemade; it had a beautiful crust on the very top, with a soft, buttery inside. I also thoroughly enjoyed the sparkling tea - it wasn't sweet at all, and after a long night of drinking, it was revitalizing! So good that my companion ordered one after the meal to take on the road. While we couldn't find any place to sit, we found a cozy place at the front where we could stand and look out the window (quite entertaining since apparently there was a Vikings game that day and many people were dressed as actual Vikings!). read more

To say the coffee is well done is an understatement. The people at Northern put a LOT of care into their work. Each morning the selections are dialed in to perfection. This place serves third-wave coffee well and also serves Minneapolis well.
