    Looks like we have another good Chinese spot to add to our rotation. The restaurant is not fancy, but it was pleasant enough, and clean and airy. The dishes we had seemed quite authentic and were nicely prepared. We especially liked the croaker fish (not fried) and the tasty sauce it came in. Mostly Mandarin-speaking customers were eating there, which is often a good sign of authenticity, lol. The wait staff was very helpful. This was our first visit, but we will definitely be back to this little restaurant hidden away in Newport Hills to try some of the other things on the menu.

    I used to eat Northeast Chinese style food quite a bit when I lived in San Jose. I was craving it for awhile and my coworker informed me there was a place by me so I decided to give it a try. This restaurant is located in a strip mall in Newport Hills. This specific spot used to be a video rental place. Outside looks a bit old but they did a pretty good job with the interior decor. I mainly came here to try Guo Bao Rou, which is basically Tang Soo Yook (Sweet and Sour pork). And man!! This place really nailed it. It was not overly sweet and there was a lot of the ginger flavor. It was fried to perfection. I think they used a rice based coating and It was chewy, crispy, and delicious. Highly recommended. And then there was a whole fish dish that was only written in Chinese on the wall. Our server told us that it was "yellow fish". I assume it was yellow tail? There were two different options - spicy and salty - and we went with Spicy. This was excellent. If you want to order this, just show them my photo below. Warning - they leave the fish head on. If you get grossed out by something like that, don't order. The rest of the dishes were not as memorable. Overall everything was quite good but it was a bit too salty for my taste, especially the noodle dish. See the photos attached for what I got to try today. Service was not bad but the employees here do not speak perfect English. Usually this is not a problem but today they gave and charged me 2 orders of Double Cooked Pork Slices... The dish is called double cooked pork ... Not that I wanted double the order. I guess I was part of the communication problem. But oh well! It was the best dish of the day. Also one warning is that many of their dishes have peanuts in them. If you have peanut allergies, make sure you proactively and clearly communicate that to the server. My son is severely allergic to nuts so I had to use Google translate to let the server know. And even after that, one of the dishes still came out with peanuts in it. They apologized and took the dish back, so no foul no harm was done but I just wanted to note this. Overall, I really enjoyed the restaurant. I think the food is quite authentic. Everything is family style (i.e. huge portions), so do not order one dish per person. For the amount food you get, I would say this place is very affordable They do not take reservations but accept all major credit cards.

NEITHER ROSE NOR THORN: It is important to note that this place is insanely popular with the area's Korean community. The restaurant is quite busy Thursday thru Sunday, and significant waits for a table are likely. Monday thru Wednesday is your best time for going and getting a table without a wait. The price of some dishes, like their signature offering, Kalbijjim, might give you a pause ($80+). It is important to keep in mind this is made to order, and one serving can easily serve four regular appetites. If you're just a couple, you're definitely going to be taking this home with you. This is not a bad thing, as Kalbijjim is one of those dishes that is even better the next day and doesn't suffer from reheating. THE VERDICT: Daeho Kalbijjim is extremely popular, and it's not hard to see why. The execute authentic Korean cuisine pretty much flawlessly with efficient and charming service. The first time I visited, the quality of the meat cuts didn't impress me, and the soups lacked depth of flavor. I'm not talking about needing more salt--the broth itself just tasted flat. To be fair, I was in the wrong. There is a clearly posted policy stating that your entire party must be present before being seated. My group was about seven minutes away, and since I had already checked in on Yelp and there were only two parties ahead of me with no one physically waiting, I asked if I could be seated and order while I waited. I had already been standing inside for about 10 minutes. I was told that although tables were available, seating me ahead of the other parties on the waitlist would be unfair. I understood the reasoning, but she had also asked prior for my order. Her explanation left me confused so i sheepishly said I understood the policy. She already seemed upset by the time i had gotten there. Sometimes we have off days i get that. This place is clearly hit or miss, I've got friends who absolutely swear by it. For me, though, it wasn't anything special and didn't justify the price. If you're looking for Korean food in the area, I've had better experiences with higher-quality dishes elsewhere, especially in Lynnwood.

This restaurant is mostly self service; there are two kiosks right in front for ordering and a table full of prefilled drink cups. I think the only upside to this restaurant is the free cups of mango tea, which are slightly sweetened and fruity. I wouldn't say they are very mango forward though. Hot Oil Biang Noodles ($13.99) - The biang biang noodles here aren't very good. They seem to be stretched somewhat, but then I feel like they take shortcuts. Instead of being almost completely stretched via bouncing the noodles on the table, they only stretch it probably half as much as normal, then they cut the dough lengthwise several times - this is why I can see multiple clear corner pieces in the noodle instead of it being relatively straight. They also don't care to make it consistent in thickness. This causes major issues because the thinner parts are soft and mushy while the thicker corners are doughy and slightly undercooked. I don't know how, but the noodles also clump together, so in some bites, I'm eating three strands of mushy noodles right on top of each other. The sauce here isn't much better. It's supposed to be aromatic, blistering hot oil mixed with chili/vinegar and aromatics poured directly on the noodles. The problems here are multifold. Firstly, they don't drain the noodles properly, resulting in an excessive amount of water diluting the sauce. Secondly, they use far too much vinegar, making the sauce overly acidic. The vinegar is by far the dominant flavor in the dish. While the dish seems like it will be spicy due to the red color oil, it's almost completely diluted out by the vinegar and noodle cooking water. The dish is basically not spicy at all due to these factors. (2/5) Spicy Cumin Lamb Biang Noodle Soup ($14.99) - This dish suffers from the same noodle issues as above, but the soup format improves some aspects slightly, but worsens other aspects. Since the soup is hot and the noodles are soaked in the broth, they soften more readily, so the soft portions are even more mushy than the "dry" noodle. The thicker portions are nice and bouncy though. The soup itself is relatively flavorful, slightly gamey, and tastes like it actually is a lamb bone broth, but it doesn't really have depth of flavor. Again, it's not really spicy at all. The lamb on top seems like thinly sliced hot pot lamb, pan fried until very dry. If not for the fact that the lamb is sliced thin, it would be extremely tough. It does have a nice fragrant cumin flavor though. (2/5) Those were the two worst bowls of noodles I've had in a long time. I wasn't particularly impressed with the noodles at the U District location of Xi'an Noodles either, but they were far better than these two steaming piles of excrement. Bathrooms - Two unisex room shared with Snowy Village. One was locked though

Both dishes were quite tasty and the presentation was excellent but Kimbap was cold (I guess that is okay but it should really be served just slightly colder than room temp) and the sides that came with Rosé Teokbokki were premade stuff from Young Ocean or another vendor, not housemade. Also the sauce for Rosé had "Korean Corn Soup" in it. I love the Korean Corn Soup but it's a cheap instant stuff you can buy at any Korean Grocery. Service/Venue/Ambiance - 3 stars. Simply put - not memorable but not bad either. Place was clean but very blank. It definitely does not feel like a place that should charge the price they do (more to come on this later). Food came out pretty fast and the server was okay. The space was pretty big and we didn't have to wait to be seated (Sunday 11:30am). Price/Value - Negative 5 stars. 20 dollars for what we got is quite ridiculous. Terrible value! Half the food we ate wasn't even made in house. On top of all this, they charged 80 cents more than the listed prices on the menu!! Wow and why? They ask for tip too. There is nowhere on the menu that says they charge 4% service fees. This is such a scam imo. Restaurants that charge service fees! Please stop. Unless the fees go to pay the wages of the employees, it should be illegal for businesses to do this. Overall, you can definitely live without this place. Food is pretty good but you really deserve better than feeling you got ripped off plus the extra 4% when paying the bill.
