The employee who I spoke with at the store was so rude. I bent the shit out of my charger cable connection while it was plugged in my Dell lap top while it was on the edge of my bed. It wouldn't charge unless I held it in place. I ordered a new cable on Amazon. It didn't work. I took it to Renew Computer. They said the port is probably damaged and they can't fix it. They said to fix it would probably cost as much as my laptop. I paid 900 for it a few years ago. 19" screen! Then I remembered another computer shop I went to a few years ago in Sun Valley, San Rafael. Went there and explained the problem. He asked if he could take a look at it for a few minutes. He did some research on the model ... then took off the back of the computer. It didn't require welding just turns of screws. He happened to have an extra port that fit in the shop. I watched the whole process Took about 1/2 hour with testing. Charged me 50 labor and 20 for the part. Unbelievable. North Bay Computers rocks. read more

I am upgrading my review. The company provides good service and has good ethics. However, they did not have the skill to work on my complicated system, so they suggested I go to a firm that could. North Bay computer was the IT "dept" at my law firm. They were always able to obtain new hardware when needed and fix whatever problem we were having with our system without all the fidgeting that many repair guys seem to display. After my retirement, I have continued to call on them any time I need help. They are available for consultation remotely and often can handle the problem without my having to actually go in to their shop. If I need more extensive service, one of their super friendly and knowledgeable technicians has been able to come to my home personally at a very reasonable cost to me. I came with a broken laptop, I had spilled water on a portion of it and had done everything I could to save it. I went to north bay computer and they diagnosed it, spent time fixing it and didn't charge me when they couldn't revive it. They told me to try getting a warranty rather than spending time and money with them, fixed it, and I went through the process and got it fixed. John and the team is the best! I have used their expertise for many years and every time I update my experience on Yelp. Brought in an old Think Pad that was running on Windows 7. It was taking over 2 minutes to boot. I did my best to defrag, remove software that was not being used and put it through virus software. No success. I called and they said it could be a number of issues, possibly a dying hard drive, but drop it off anyway. They didn't want to repair a computer that would cost more than a replacement. One day latter I get the report. They "cleaned" as a professional would do, and discovered old virus protection software was clogging up the boot time. It was removed and it works Great! Boots up immediately. One hour of labor! These guys have done some extensive work on a bunch of our computers of the years and every time,they make magic. They are easy to work with, very fast and priced right. Before you dump that problem computer, call them. You will get prompt service and honest work. Even with Covid the guys were still employed... meaning there was plenty of work from the working at home group to keep them busy. You got to call them and let them take it from there. The best!!! I came to NorthBay computer systems with a fairly decked-out gaming PC that was extremely sick. As a hobbiest, I had done a fair amount of trouble shooting on my own to determine what the problem was, but I wasn't getting anywhere so in frustration, I called around San Rafael, where I work to try and find some expert attention for my PC. Ryan Barba cheerfully took my computer in and although this occurred during the Christmas Holidays and they were working on a skeleton crew, promised to get my computer diagnosed and likely back to me within 48 hours or so. He was able to run diagnostics and narrow the problem down to some RAM that I had purchased and upgraded about a year ago, which was defective and creating problems throughout the system. It wasn't easy to locate this issue, meaning the diagnostics they had run were fairly extensive but Ryan only charged me the standard rate for about an hour of his time. They even indulged me as I called in each day to 'check in' and he gave me a play-by-play of the tests they had run, and even asked me a few more questions each time to help his understanding of what might be happening. I will use them any time I have issues with my computer in the future, the experience shows me why going beyond the "geek squad" and using a true geek is the way to go! read more

This review is long over due. I have used them in the last 6 months 3 times for 3 separate issues. They provide A+ service via phone, in their shop, and at my home. I had a desktop that just wasn't working I took the desktop in and it was full of viruses. They cleaned, added a new virus program, checked and double checked their work and for the last 6 months it has been running perfect. I wanted to make my house wireless. I brought the system from them. I was given detailed instructions on how to get it working... I was almost spot on regarding my installation but I missed one key step. They did their best to troubleshoot me over the phone (free of charge), but I am the type of person once I get frustrated I lose all sense. So the next day they sent Ryan out to my house and within a minute it had my wireless working. Since he was here and I had agreed up front to pay the min of a 1 hour service call (by they way they don't charge for travel time) he worked on some other minor issues and also took some time out to do some basic training for me. Today I needed them again... and called... and asked for Ryan. His appointment at my home was for 10:30 am and he was here at 10:25. I needed another laptop that I had hooked up to the wireless. By they way Ryan had left me all the pass codes for my wireless (but I forgot). Within seconds he had my second laptop working, checked on our desktop to make certain it was still in great operating condition, and then did a defrag on my original laptop. I can't send NorthBay enough compliments. They are a small local business that really knows how to deliver superior service. I would recommend them to anyone for home or business. Once I purchased the memory (almost unavailable these days) on line, I took my Thinkpad to their office to properly install the chip at a time convenient for me. I called NorthBay about a mac based external hard drive that was acting up. they said "no problem, bring it by and we'll take a look" A few days go by and I call and they tell me, we don't work on Mac's. Really!, you could not have told me that before I unhooked everything, got into my car, drove over there and then did it all again to pick it up? Not a word of apology when I did pick it up about the fact that they steered me wrong. Anyway, bought a C2G USB to IDE cord online for 29 bucks and drive is rescued. read more

John and I sat down and shared a hazelnut coffee this morning, inside of my wife's Acer S7 Laptop. It smelled delicious. (John isn't a fan of hazelnut) Having once worked in desktop support as an MCSA/MCSE, I entered into our meeting armed only with the desperate knowledge that I lacked a star screwdriver and time was of the essence. It was 7am... WHO IS OPEN AT 7AM??? These guys are. As the clamshell case was cracked open, we looked at one another across the workbench as only two seasoned IT professionals could. There was death in the room, we were certain of it. Partly because we could smell it... again, hazelnut. Miraculously, after tearing down the patient, cleaning it off, and patching it back up; wouldn't you know it? The darn thing booted. Never mind that the guts had been corroded by acid and sugar, that the backspace key no longer functioned, or that the HDMI out was shot -- IT BOOTED. Hell, the touchscreen even worked. It was enough to take a clean backup and order a replacement. Thanks John, you helped turn my doctoral student's dissertation tragedy into nothing more than an expensive anecdote. I am typing this from my computer, which I had already mentally buried. I got it from my stepdad, and almost as soon as I started using it, I kept getting this weird blue screen with some message about the display moniter. I suppose its worth noting that I use an HP Windows 7 laptop with Beats Audio. I brought it in, and Ryan, who was AMAAAZING, called me with copious updates. I wasn't able to answer both times because he happened to call while I was at work, but the message was so detailed, I felt like I knew exactly what the status of my laptop was and how far along or far from the goal we were. I picked up my computer early the next week, took it home, and alas, the blue screen was still happening. I called them back, and they told me to bring it back and they would work on it until it was fixed, for free (since I had already paid for the service the first time). I swung by a couple days later, picked up my computer, which was now FIXED, and went about my way. Look, I can't afford to buy a new laptop. I am also an aspiring novelist in what little spare time I have, so the laptop is incredibly important to me. It meant so much to me that these guys were so friendly, so warm, kept me updated every step along the way, and displayed so much concern about making sure they got the job done. I appreciated each one of them (worked with a couple different guys, but mostly Ryan), and I appreciated the ultra reasonable price I paid for having such an important item back in my life. So, I'm secretly having a platonic love affair with the peeps at North Bay Computers. Shhh, they don't know it but I think they're all absolutely fantastic! Initially I brought my broke *** pc riddled who knows what in to have a look see. My computer was functioning at a slug's pace and I couldn't get online to save my life. In fact, it was this incident that I realized I was having a co-dependent relationship with my computer...shameful. When I dropped my computer off in the wee hours of 7:30 am John promised he'd have it back by the next day. (serious computer withdrawals). Not only did I get my computer back on time but it also did not break the bank. My computer runs great now! Northbay offers outstanding service! They rock! I'll keep this short 'n sweet: I've been a professional software developer for over 12 years. I maintain redundant system back-ups and generally speaking manage all of my own networks and hardware and focus just on shipping code. After an unexpected power outage my primary development machine could not be booted to the OS nor restored by either a Windows back-up or a Norton Ghost image. After spending days trying to debug the issue myself, the loss in time and revenue forced me to begin coding my work on a back-up laptop. My laptop died...within 45 minutes I had a scan disk with all my data, and they helped me navigate my warranty with Dell. My man had to give me a pep talk before I walked into North Bay Computer Systems with his (what turned out to be)virus laden computer. I was intimidated, panicked, thinking I , the technophobe was going to walk into a cavernous spaceship surrounded by piercing hardcore computer aficionados who were going to eye me with disdain and pity and then charge an arm and a leg because they thought I was so stupid. Instead, I walked into a comfy, welcoming store and received the best service I've ever had in a long time. NBCS staff were unpretentious, helpful, relaxed and well, educational. And no, they didn't charge an arm and a leg. It was a reasonable price for the issue. A year later, it was my turn to have a computer meltdown. This time, Ryan was my superhero of the day. He was like the Flash, taking care of a few customers over the phone, taking care of me, all the while, fingers whirling on the keyboard as he worked on something else.
