Just wanted to give a quick update to my original review. I brought my laptop in over the weekend because I was super concerned that I had a virus or malware. My device was running warm, and the fans would kick on after very minimal use. After running three different types of scans, checking the system information, etc., Bonom opened up my laptop and discovered the issue. The fans were completely clogged with an astonishing amount of my dog's hair. It was both amazing and disgusting to see the true power of the fans--the hair had been sucked up from leaving my laptop on my bed. Yelp, please learn from my shameful experience and don't leave your laptop on your bed for many reasons--it really does need to be left on a table. Bonom blasted it out with a special air hose, and now it's functioning like a normal, non-dog-hair-clogged laptop should. Hooray! While I was in the shop, three other customers came in. Bonom and his associate went above and beyond to help all of us. I saw them assisting one woman who was having an iCloud issue that Apple absolutely could and should have helped her with, but she was here because of the customer support and patience you'll get at Marin Computer Repair. Bonom didn't charge me for his assistance and was very much not upselling the other women I saw him help, which is really decent of him. In situations with cars, computers, or basically anything with a lot of hardware and software involved, I've often felt and been taken advantage of as a young female customer. Marin Computers - Avoid at All Costs I would never allow Marin Computers to touch another one of my devices, and I strongly advise others to stay away. This business operates with blatant dishonesty, broken promises, and outright gaslighting. They repeatedly changed their story and then attempted to deny what they had previously told me, responding with variations of "that's not what I said" whenever challenged. I was initially told my laptop would be ready in one week and that it had to be sent out for ultrasonic cleaning due to a coffee spill, at a cost of $350. When I called a week later, the owner admitted they had not even started the process and claimed they were "about to put it in the machine." When I reminded him that I was told the cleaning was outsourced, he abruptly hung up on me, saying he was "not going to argue." Two weeks later, they finally claimed to have the laptop back and then added another delay, stating they needed to order an I/O component. I was told the part would cost about $90 and that labor would be free. After excessive delays, I took the laptop home just to recover my own files because they were taking so long. Once again, I was promised a one-week turnaround. Instead, it took another month. When I finally went to pick it up, I was told the cost was $150--until I reminded him of his own quoted price, at which point it was reduced to $99. From day one, my instincts told me not to trust this place. Despite supposedly "good reviews," the entire experience confirmed my concerns. Delays, shifting explanations, denial of prior statements, and unprofessional behavior define this operation. Save yourself the frustration, wasted time, and risk to your data. Do not walk--run to a different computer repair shop. read more

What a great shop! James was able to rescue my wife's laptop and avoid a major disaster because she had a large amount of non-backed up work (lesson learned!) A glass of water got knocked over and into the keyboard (ok, maybe a glass of wine) and for a few minutes it seemed like NBD, then it was lights out. My idea was 'turn it back on and that will help dry it out!" Which, as it turns out, was the worst possible advice (never do that) and although much circuitry was fried, James would not be deterred and somehow managed to get into the drive and recover all the data ... and then replace/repair the damage so the laptop works! Bought a very powerful slightly used HP Spectre 15" laptop with touch screen which I love. Bonom was able to swap in and configure the solid state MME drive from my older Lenovo laptop so I could keep all apps and data. On a recent visit, James helped upgrade to a brand new battery I bought online. Just ordered a new base as they had to drill out a stripped screw on the old base to swap out the battery. For some time my 2011 iMac 27" had been running hot, with the fan coming on loudly attempting to cool the machine. I phoned Apple tech support to see if they could do whatever was necessary to correct the issue but learned that the computer is beyond the age limit for Apple to correct issues. It happens that my brother is acquainted with Bonom at Marin Computer and has always been generous in praise for Bonom's skill and demeanor. Bonom facilitated my brother's acquisition of more than one computer, so I called. On Tuesday morning I brought the iMac into the shop on Louise Street in San Rafael, and handed it over to James, Bonom's partner at Marin Computer. James asked if I'd seen the dreaded spinning beach ball which I had as the computer was not only hot but slow in loading. Within a day James told me I needed a new hard drive to replace my 10 year old drive, that I had some viruses, and the computer needed an interior cleaning to remove 10 years of dust that had accumulated inside. A day later I called to learn that my iMac was now cleaned, viruses removed, a new SSD hard drive installed, and a new RAM board installed to up the capability to 16 GB. Ready to rock. Friday when I appeared for pick up Bonom gave me a detailed run through of the issues that had been corrected as we observed the fresh rapid loading screen. Bonom and James were efficient, intelligent, and informative while revealing what to me had previously been unknown. They did all this not only in record time but at an extremely low price. My iMac is running like a new computer. I didn't realize how much I am involved with my computer until it was in undergoing surgery in Bonom's shop as I stared at an empty space on my desk. But not for long. It pays to bring your gear to Marin Computer. Don't hesitate to have a tune up, a cleaning, and an expert reasonable analysis by these two gracious geniuses. Forget Apple. maybe I called on a bad day at Marin Computer Repair, but the guy who I first talked to on the phone (twice) went south in a matter of less than 1 minute. My External Hard Drive had failed and I called to see if there was anything he could do to save/store the data. Being that I'm a senior on Social Security and don't have much money to spend, I usually ask a lot of questions before I agree to spend my money. Well, this guy must not have appreciated my questions, because he got rude and abrupt very quickly. He referred me to Drive Savers in Novato to compare prices--so I had the choice of either spending way too much money or to go to Marin Computer Repair and give my money to a very rude guy with zero customer service know-how. My wife's laptop died last week with all her personal business information on it ... uh oh. After doing some Yelp research, I found this very highly rated repair shop and dropped in. It didn't take Bonom long to confirm that the computer was dead and move directly into data recovery mode. In the meantime, we started talking options around getting my wife a new computer ... funny enough they order/build laptops there. I ended up buying a very nice little machine that he configured for me while we were waiting. Bonom was honest with me that I could probably get the same machine cheaper online, but I was in a bit of a time pinch and am ok with spending a little more to support local business (definitely appreciated the honesty). So data recovery is now complete, but too much data to burn to disc ... so I had to run home and grab a portable hard drive. While there, I grabbed my desktop that had been operating at the speed of a very old tortoise (very slow). Bonom cleaned that out (literally with an air gun - who knew you were supposed to clean out internal fans?) and took a ton of crap files out of temp storage and run time. The wife is happy with her new computer, I'm happy with the improved performance of my desktop, prices were fair - and they are nice guys. I had a computer crisis (as most do who head to a computer repair service) and came to Yelp to find a good company in Marin. I read the great reviews, and decided that Marin Computer Repair was a great place to go - parts in stock, great service, etc. were all noted on previous reviews. HOWEVER - when I got there at 10:00am (the advertised opening time), no one was there - doors locked. I sat and waited...and waited...and waited...checking a few times to see if someone had come in the back and unlocked the doors without me knowing. NOPE! No one was there. So I called the number and left a message that I had an emergency - what it was - and that I was parked outside. By about 10:20am after one last check of the locked door, I decided to leave, thinking that they would call back and help me with my computer. It is SEVERAL days later, and I haven't had a call and no explanation about the sign on the front that says "great service". BBBBBBUUUUUUUUUZZZZZZZEERRRRRR! Try again. No service is what I got. If you say you are open at a certain time - open. If you say you have great service - give it. If you say you will return a call - return it. One stars is too many for this girl. I called Ryan at NorthBay Computers (also in San Rafael) and he not only helped me over the phone, but gave me great follow up advice, free of charge. That's service! read more

I brought my Mac book air there and wanted to replace the the 128 gig hard drive with one twice as big. They siad on friday it would be done by tuesday. It took 3 weeks and I had to call there many times and after 21/2 weeks they finally got the hard drive. They kept my old hard drive which was a solid state drive and cost me an extra $1000.00 in 2009 when I bought the computer. They told me they would sell me my own hard drive back to me. When I said no and wrote a yelp review their tune changed. This is 1st hand - ask them. read more

What began as a simple memory upgrade almost turned into a disaster until Mohamed at Marin Computers came through. My decision to upgrade my 4+ year old MacBook pro to Mavericks resulted in a painful deterioration in perfornance which I thought could be corrected by adding some RAM. I brought it in and they suggested I replace the hard drive as well. What I thought would be a 2 hour process stretched to 2 days because of problems with my old drive. After another series of crashes I was ready to post a scathing review, but Mohamed remained determined to resolve the problem. He even followed up with a call several days later to check. Let me first say this... Do not freak out when you see this understated shop on a slightly seedy street. These guys are amazing. Picture this: 7 months pregnant with twins and I fall down while carrying my laptop. I called frantic with a broken hard drive and Mohamed and Bonom suggested I come down. I walk in, teary-eyed and stressed out and wouldn't you know, for a few hundred dollars, they saved me, my music, my photos, and my business. I knew I should have been backing everything up, especially all of my client files, but they managed to save everything. I also have to say that they charged 1/4 of what the other guys quoted me. In addition to that repair, I have purchase 3 computers from them. I have 2 PC's and a Mac. Their prices and service are exemplary and they are really fun to see and visit with. They're friendly, diligent, smart and above all, they're competent. I have never felt ripped-off in any way. Both have a strong commitment to small business and community. I have called with simple and difficult questions and they're always ready and willing to help. They stand behind their work and their products no matter what. While it may seem they are a bit scattered at times, or their office is in disarray, I can assure you, they have it all under control and they will take great care of you! I recently upgraded to a newer Mac Pro. I realized that I had accumulated a couple other Macs that were either inoperable and out of date with the OS systems. Something needed to be done to get these machines in working order so I could resell them without spending a lot of money. I didn't want to wait in long lines and pay corporate prices so I decided to skip the official Mac Store hoops and give the smaller guys a chance. Based on a friend's recommendation I chose Marin Computer Repair. Upon walking in the store I was greeted in a friendly manner. These guys are usually pretty busy, which is a good sign to me, so I usually call ahead and make sure that it's a good time and they aren't out on a service call. When it comes to pricing parts they are going to be just as cheap as anyone else. When it comes to labor cost I've found they are reasonable enough to continue business with them. I also mentioned another project I was working on and the owner Mo went and got his business card file, made a phone call and hooked me up with a lead. That's team work and true service.
