I love this place. So many options to have just one favorite. When we are running late from the kids sports or whatever we pick up dinner from here all the time. The katsu with the horseradish sauce, hamburger steak, herb crusted mahi are so ono. My daughter loves the Hawaiian plate. They also have a plate lunch card that once it's filled you can get a free plate lunch. You can dine in but it's a small shop with limited seating. Staff is friendly. Decided to try somewhere new via DoorDash and was not disappointed. We ordered eight items off the menu, you know to try stuff and was surprised by how much we got for the price paid. The burger alone was enough to fill you up with the bread nice and soft, seemed freshly baked all for under $7 bucks! The 'mini' combo plates make me wonder if the full size came in two separate containers as the mini was a full plate with either rice and Mac salad or leafy green salad. Everything we tried was delicious from the Teri burger, calamari, pork, chicken, char shu, long rice and ribs (we went a little outta control lol). Small local business that's worth finding in Palolo Valley on 10th Avenue. Plate lunches are MEAN! My two favorites are the Chicken Katsu and the Ribs. Katsu comes loaded with meaty chicken with that perfectly crispy coating. They give a good amount too. That Katsu sauce has a hint of horseradish which gives it an extra kick. The food isn't bad. Its your normal plate lunch type of place. My daughter gets their laulau and kailua pig with lomi salmon, but always complains of too much fat. I usually get chicken katsu which is a gum cutter, and my hubby usually gets something that he likes. We call our orders in as it can be a bit of wait for the food. I think what stops me from returning is the moodiness from both the lady and man working there. I think they are the owners, not sure, but they can be very rude. We like to support local business, but I'm not going back to a establishment if I can't even get a "thank you" after picking up food and spending my hard earned money here. read more

North Shore Grindz is located on 10th Ave going Mauka bound... on the right side... didn't see a parking lot so I parked on the street... which wasn't hard to find... wonder how parking is during peak times? Anyhow, make your way down because you'll need time to decide what to order... This shop reminds me of a few gems in Kalihi... Ethel's on Kalihi & Ray's on King... but inside this joint has about two dozen seats and is well air conditioned... they also have a stamp card but you'll get your free plate when you pay for 19 $10 plates and the 20th is free! The Goods... Herb Crusted Mahi Mahi with Lemon Cream... got this with Brown Rice and toss greens... the Mahi was breaded and cooked well... the Herb & Lemon Cream sauce are nice additions to the fish and before I knew I started I was done... 3 nice size pieces of Mahi... not huge but nicely proportioned... My husband makes "happy food noises" when he LOVES a meal but he does it very rarely. He started making them after his first bite of the mahi mahi and did not stop until the end. I had the steak and shrimp and it was wonderful. This is a great Mom and Pop spot to check out. And their prices are incredible. Hawaii can be very expensive, but their prices were VERY reasonable. We came back again to get our favorites, sirloin steak and shrimp scampi , NY steak and breaded oysters and garlic calamari with roasted pepper cream sauce . Nice treat was the coconut macaroons. I also bought the chocolate chip cookies! The coconut macaroons are very good not too sweet or oily, just right! We are glad that North Shore Grinds is open . This is a pretty good spot for a plate lunch. The prices are decent, about $11 or $12 per plate unless you get the mini. The food selection is varied, everything from Kahlua pig and chicken long rice, to pork chops, or mahi sandwiches. You can even get a hamburger or a salad. My first time here, but I plan for this to be my stop every time I'm craving some local food as it's right by my place. They got big portions for a great price, especially compared to everything else in Kaimuki! (: Not to mention the food is delicious and feels like home! They also offer a stamp card! This place has been in the Kaimuki/Palolo area for quite sometime now..........I wanna say I came here many moons ago, like in the late 90's, or early 2000.......but haven't been back till today. As well as looking at a few photos posted by my Yelp buddies - Larlar S., & Lori I............pics really help ya know! A guy like me usually likes to look at the pics over reading.......same thing applied when I was going to skool! Of course if ya did that........look what you can possibly become! Buwahahahaha! Yeah, I drive around..........and sometimes I fly, then drive..........I fix stuff, then I look for da grindages! A simple life.......... Well, after looking at too many of the delicious food photos on Yelp, I was convinced to give North Shore Grinds another try! Jumped into my car & took my coworker to North Shore Grinds to get da grindages! What can I say about the place........a very small hole in the wall place. As you walk into the joint, there is a small door which is kinda cut in 1/2 where you would order your food & pay. Inside the joint is like 4 tables.........3 of the tables are small where you can probably sit 4 people max per table, and the other table was longer where you could probably sit 6 to 8 people. The A/C was blowing cold today, so the room was very comfortable.........especially since the last few days felt like death! As it was just so hot & humid!!!! Upon scanning the wall menu, I decided on getting the Teri Beef & Teri Chicken Combo with brown rice & toss salad. My coworker got the Meat Jun & Mahi Mahi Combo with white rice & toss salad. What can I say about the grub-a-dub-dub???? Well, I must say I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch today! The teri beef was delicious! It was soft chunks of meat.........not the thinly cut meat like you would get on a normal plate lunch. The teri chicken was boneless, and both meats had the delicious teri sauce on top it, which I enjoyed a lot! The sauce was very flavorful, and it had a slight sweetness about it. As for my coworker........he had asked for white rice, but if you see in the photo.......they messed up and gave him the brown rice (he ate anyway). He also mentioned that they did not cook his Meat Jun right, as the meat jun coating was not cooked thoroughly. He loved the mahi mahi, and the cream sauce that came with it. I guess the cream sauce had complemented the mahi very well. There is no parking at all for this place, so you will need to do the street parking thing. The place was packed today, with a lot of people coming in/out for take out. When we got there for lunch today, there was absolutely no seating at all (as every table was taken), but lucky for us, a nice gentleman allowed us to share his table with us. Although the prices of the plate lunches are on the slightly higher side - (paid $23.41 for the two plate lunches, + 2 bottled water) you can clearly taste the food quality........as the ingredients were very fresh. Don't forget gang.......get a "punch card!" If you eat there like 20 times, after you fill up the card, you can get a free t-shirt and a choice of either a insulated sport pack, or a insulated tote bag, or you can get 2 plate lunches. Not a bad deal if I say so myself.......... Last of all...........food is a solid 5, but I had to take a star off, as service was not so friendly. The lady who was taking my order today appeared to be angry so something........not sure what was going on with that. 1st thing that came to my mind was the (AKL) - "Angry Korean Lady" of Ah-Lang Restaurant. So far I have enjoyed all the variety of 'Grinds' and specials on their menu. Reasons: Specials different from your typical small eatery. Portions are really good. When you like something, you keep craving more. Needed another dose of NSG in Palolo Valley. Was gonna go fishy with the Mahimahi and Lemon Creme, but needed something hardier so opted for a mix Teri hamburger with Chicken Katsu. Hit is big with the katsu. Perfectly crunchy katsu coating and the sauce was the best. I usually peel off some of the katsu crust off the chicken, but after tasting this crunchy delight I opted to go for it. The katsu crunch is the bomb dipped in the sauce. The Teri hamburger was mediocre. Miss. But the sauce was light but tasty, not too overbearing with shoyu. Other Yelpers mentioned the perfect brown rice. Yes, again, it was perfect with no hard crunchy kernels noted. I have yet to try the Mac salad - maybe next time with the Mahimahi. Years ago I used to live not far from here and the food was pretty good! Customer service was ok too. Went yesterday and the food was not cooked thoroughly, no customer service, and workers weren't friendly at all. Will I be back to give this place another try? Nope! Sorry! They older lady who I assume is the owner didn't greet me and only asked what I wanted. When I left, handed me my food angrily. Best plates so far at North Shore Grinds is the teri steak plate and chicken katsu. I've also tried the Hawaiian plate (not bad) and the Seared Ahi with Cilantro (also not bad). It's strictly street parking on 10th Ave or across the street on Hardesty. Service is super casual - order at the counter, menu written in colorful chalk on two chalkboards, which I found charming. If I hadn't been to Samira's Country Market before, I probably would have never bothered to eat here. I can only assume the family is from the North Shore or that they think food on the North Shore is a lot better. I don't know. They do have a bit fancier fare like fish with cilantro pesto or cajun chicken with fresh salsa Today, I went with one of the specials which was Braised chicken. It came with two scoops of rice and mac salad. The chicken was really good, except a little cold. Basically it was like chicken with a beef stew-like sauce. The sauce was nice and rich and had lots of flavor. The portion was nice too, three big chicken thighs. The mac salad was okay, but too much mayo for me. Altogether, my plate was $6.50. My hubby loves this place! They make good plate lunches and you can't beat the price. You get a large amount of food for a few bucks. It is a small restaurant with a few tables inside. It's nothing fancy, very casual and laid back. They have my husband's favorite chicken katsu curry with BBQ horseradish dipping sauce. I like their salad, they are large with fresh greens and have fresh veggies in them. I tried the chicken katsu since my husband raves about it. It was good. I liked the breading on the chicken it wasn't too thick. You can get it with salad, rice and Mac salad. The Mac salad is very flavorful and better than other Mac salads I've tried. My husband ordered the furikake opakapaka fish. It came with a lemon cream sauce that was bursting with flavor. He said it was very tasty, and that the sauce added a nice balance to the meal. They have a stamp card system so each time you come you earn a stamp and once your card is complete you receive a free meal! They accept cards and cash. Tip-They no longer do online ordering. So you can't order on yelp. I placed a order on yelp for pick up and when we got to the restaurant the owner said that they do not affiliate with bite squad anymore. Can only do so much with katsu, but I was impressed by NSGz. NSGz hit all the criteria I was looking for...crispy crust, soft/juicy chicken and awesome katsu sauce.
