Hamburger steak
Jeffrey T.

I keep hearing about their chili pepper chicken and that has been on my list to try. Though their hamburger steak caught my eye so that's what I got. Who can say no to sauteed onions and mushrooms smothered in gravy? It comes with a yummy mac/potato salad too. Will have to get that chili pepper chicken next time.

All I can say is wow to the Chili Pepper Chicken! After talking to our hotel clerk and took several recommendations from him, this was the place I was looking forward to the most. The restaurant is in the gas station on the corner. There is no seating so plan on eating in your car or taking it to a park or the beach. The service was just ok. Nothing special. But that chicken tho!!! Holy chick! Breaded and perfectly fried tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce. This was served with a Hawaiian style Mac salad and a generous portion of steamed Calrose rice yummmmm! I bought a bottle of locally made chili pepper water (Hawaiian style hot sauce) to douse my lunch. Glad I took this recommendation and I will definitely be back and ordering the same thing every time I visit Kauai!

Called in for take out pizza and it was ready within 20 minutes. Adding the cheesy garlic bread and hot wings. Pizza was alright, Garlic bread was good and the wings were great! Sorry I did take pictures, we were starving.

Winnah winnah chicken dinnah. This plate by far has one of the best chili peppa chicken I ever had and for a general store at a gas station this place blew what I thought right out the window. I 100% would come back again just for that plate. It was very filling and not to mention the service from the wahines inside was so welcoming and willing to help. They knew what they were known for and made it aware to me so I jumped the gun and boy was that a great decision. Mahalo nui to the staff and cooks. Big was ono.

If Mac salad made with spaghetti noodles is appealing then you better get yourself to the north side to dine on some plate lunch. Located in a gas station, the general store is serving up some of HI's best comfort food. Ordered a few items from the menu including the hamburger steak, salad, chicken fingers, and at the recommendation of staff a serving of garlic bread. If you came to Princeville with the hopes of losing weight than this might not be the place for you. Chicken fingers were Panko coated and fried, mushroom gravy thick and flavorful, garlic bread was garlicky and delicious, and hamburger steak was just as it sounds coated in gravy accompanied by spaghetti salad and rice. Appears to be more of a locals place so come early or be prepared to wait.

Chill Pepper Chicken is Unbelievably Good! One of the Best kept food secrets in the Princeville/Hanalei Bay areas, pricing is best in town, chicken strips are good, fries are great, but the Chili Pepper Chicken is some of the best tasting chicken I have ever had and it isn't hot just nicely seasoned!

Chicken katsu

North Shore General Store is a run down gas station. I never would have stop here but a person on a tour I was on said it was good. We stopped here yesterday and shared a chicken katsu. They do have specials. Yesterday was Friday, I assume that's why the specials were fish. I heard they had prime rib earlier in the week. I can't wait to see what they have today. The chicken katsu was great. Very fresh, hot and not over cooked. It comes with 2 scoops of rice and potato mac salad.

THAT CHILI PEPPER CHICKEN THOUGH!!! You have to come here just for that chili pepper chicken. While it was my first time trying this dish, my boyfriend and his family were/are all locals and they all raved this was the best they've had. His grandma complimented it twice during the meal and couldn't get over how it stays so crispy! After my weeklong trip, this is the dish I crave the most (would've been poke but I managed to fit poke in 4 times haha), but on my next trip back, I'll have to come back again. We also got the chicken katsu, which was not great - the breading was more similar to chicken nugget breading instead of traditional katsu breading, so we'd pass on that next time. DOUBLE CHILI PEPPER CHICKEN NEXT TIME! Thank you to my boyfriend's uncle for recommending that dish here! As for the location - it's in a shopping plaza right by/part of? a gas station. You might be a little confused but JUST GO RIGHT IN FOR THE BEST CHICKEN EVER!!! Also one thing worth mentioning - you might think one plate lunch is good enough for two people, BUT, I can guarantee you will fight over the chicken, so do yourselves a favor and just order two :)

Loco moco

One thing about princeville is that there aren't enough restaurants! There are way too many tourists for the hand full of food options that are available. We decided to order the loco moco from the general store because of the food reviews, and we are really happy with it. The outdoor seating was shaded and it was great to people watch overlooking the plaza. There was plenty of parking.

Potato Mac deliciousness.

Yes, yes, yes! Pizza, plates, and potato Mac salad. Authentic, delicious, generous portions. Friendly staff. Made great recommendations and answered all questions. Patient, pleasant and funny! Grab and go hidden gem. Don't skip this one!

We are so sad to hear that they will be closing at the end of November. We love coming here every time we are in Princeville. Their food is super delicious and cheap. Everyone should try this place out before they close.

So we pulled up to Chicken In A Barrel BBQ around 6:30 PM on a Thursday, and honestly... it hit the spot in the best way. We ordered the 1/2 Chicken, the #3 Baby Back Rib Plate, plus a full order of fries and a side of ranch. Total came out to about $50, which felt totally fair for the amount of food and how filling it was. The ribs were my favorite part -- smoky, meaty, and not dry at all. They had that real BBQ vibe without being drowned in sauce. The chicken had a solid char on the outside and stayed juicy inside (which is not easy after a long day when you're eating fast and don't want to mess around). Fries were crispy and salty -- exactly what you want after a hike like that. This place is simple, casual, no fancy nonsense -- just good BBQ that makes you feel human again. If you're on Kauai and you've been hiking all day (or even if you haven't), this spot is absolutely worth it. We left full, happy, and already talking about coming back again.

We ended up at Chicken in a Barrel and honestly... super good and super flavorful. I think I kept unfairly comparing it to that fresh-off-the-grill roadside chicken experience in my head, but this place still absolutely delivered. The chicken and ribs were both really yummy and definitely worth the stop. Also loved the service here. I had asked for dark meat but got white meat instead and was totally fine with it, but the guy came back out like, "Oh no man, you wanted dark meat huh?" and insisted on fixing it even after I said it was okay That kind of service always stands out to me. Only thing missing for me was a good hot/spicy sauce option because I LOVE heat But overall, definitely recommend

Just Had the Best Slice of Paradise at Hideaways Pizza Pub!…read more Man, if you're in Princeville and craving pizza that hits like a Hawaiian sunset, Hideaways is your spot. Tucked away in that Pali Ke Kua gem, I just rolled in for what I thought was a quick lunch, but boom--happy hour had just kicked off! We're talking killer deals on those award-winning Neapolitan pies, fresh-off-the-press dough made with that fancy 00 Tipo flour, and local craft beers that taste like they were brewed in the waves. I went for the classic longboard --blistered tomatoes, house-made sauce bursting with island-fresh vibes, and mozzarella that melts like it knows it's on vacation. Paired it with buffalo wings that pack a punch without the regret. The vibe? Chill pub meets beach hideout--think ocean breezes sneaking in while you crush a pint from a Kauai brewery. And the staff? Legends who treat you like ohana, not just another tourist. Hawai'i Magazine called it 'Best of the Best' for a reason--this place is the real deal, hidden but worth every second of the hunt. Parking's a breeze in the community lot too. If you're not there yet, fix that. 5/5 stars, aloha-style. Can't wait for round two.
