Schedule information is available at https://www.capmetro.org/stopdetail/index.php?stop=5537 (Highland Station only); https://www.capmetro.org/schedmap/?svc=0&f1=550&s=0&d=N (full Red Line schedule); https://www.capmetro.org/planner/ (CapMetro Trip Planner); https://www.capmetro.org/uploadedFiles/New2016/Plan_Your_Trip/Destinations_Schedule_Book/Schedulebook_web.pdf (full schedule book as available in print); and the Go Line at 512-474-1200 (with a live agent to help from 7a-8p weekdays, 8a-5p weekends). Follow @CapMetroATX on Twitter for up-to-the-minute alerts about any service interruptions. From the Highland station, you can connect to the following city bus routes via adjacent stop IDs 5602 & 5603 (southbound is on the same side of the street; northbound is across at the Highland intersection): 7 (Duval/Dove Springs - High Frequency) 324 (Georgian/Ohlen - Local) 337 (Koenig/Colony Park - Local) 350 (Airport Blvd - Local) ACC students and others who bike to school/work near Highland may be interested to know that for $30 a year, they can get key card access to the adjacent covered MetroBike locker seven days a week, with 24-hour surveillance and work stand with tools to repair & maintain their rides. https://www.capmetro.org/metrobike/ If you're going to ride the train (and you're not a kid under 5 or active military/emergency workers in uniform), you have to purchase and activate one of the Commuter pass options. At launch back in 2010, there were specified zones with varying fares, but now there's just a single ride ($3.50, no transfers, no roundtrip) or all day Commuter ($7, unlimited trips & transfers) option. The single ride can only be purchased in cash from the kiosk at the station AND you need exact fare or you will get your change in the form of a use-it-or-lose-it CapMetro voucher that expires in 15 days - boo! Most folks will prefer the ticketing experience using the CapMetro smartphone app (unless they have exact change and really only need a one-way trip for $3.50). I highly recommend installing the app and getting payment methods set-up in advance so that boarding, activating your ticket, and displaying it when asked will be a breeze. Paying at the kiosk can be a hassle and if the queue is long, you might miss your train and wait 30 minutes or more until the next one arrives. Students with a photo school ID or a CapMetro "Reduced Fare ID" can get half-priced tickets, but to access this benefit through the CapMetro app, you have to first visit their Transit Store in downtown Austin to set it up in person (call 512-389-7454 for instructions). Be sure to bring a birth certificate, passport, or other proof of age/eligibility for the rider. This also applies to seniors, people with disabilities, and active military out-of-uniform. Other ways to purchase passes at retail outlets are detailed at https://capmetro.org/purchase/. If you are used to traveling via public transit in other major cities, you may find using CapMetro services to be, well, somewhat frustrating. The truth is that we haven't made the investments that we should have to keep up with the rapid growth of our city and you can see the evidence when you ride our trains & buses. For MetroRail passengers, this means that trains don't come very often, they don't stop at many places that you likely would want to go, and parking is often not available anywhere near the station where you are starting your trip. However, if you aren't in a hurry, are aware of the limited schedule, and are actually headed to Crestview, ACC Highland, Plaza Saltillo (Eastside entertainment district), or Downtown (business and entertainment galore), the MetroRail is a comfortable ride that relieves your need to sit in traffic or find elusive parking at your destination. All I ask was how to get to University drive? The bus driver would not speak to me in English. So I asked one of the passengers if they could translate. Then the bus driver all angrily said I know English. Then she said in a ugly way to me can you lock your wheelchair. She told me Chimys which is a restaurant in downtown San Marcos. I was thinking there is no way I can take my Manuel wheelchair and wheel myself to Chimys to try to get to University drive. Then she starting saying loudly 3 times ah ching gow. It is not spelled correctly. I know and all Hispanics that know Spanish, that it is a curse word. So she is going off in 1 to 3 seconds because someone simply ask her question. Starts cussing on the bus. She said the curse word 3 times. I said you don't have to curse. It also states on 3 different websites. That it is a Spanish slang curse word. So when she saw me wheeling into the office. The bus driver ran into to talk to the supervisor before I could. The bus driver only said to me in English all angrily I know. When I asked for someone to translate. The women knows English but refuses to speak to me in English. She only wanted to speak Spanish, mind you were still in America where the language is English. That is what we are taught in schools here. When I go into the building to talk to the supervisor. That bus driver sees me and runs in there to talk to the supervisor first before I can. The supervisor a white woman with Grey or blond hair. I was trying to explain to her what happened. She would not listen. She was cutting me off when I tried to tell her. I told her in Spanish because I learned Spanish listening to my friends in school and I picked it up. Tex Mex. Then the Supervisor got all angry at a woman in a wheelchair, me, when I spoke to her in Spanish. Told me I was being rude. So I filed a complaint and a man whose Indian called me and said he knows French, Spanish and English and that is not a curse word. Every Texas Hispanic who knows Spanish has told me yes, that is a curse word. I told the supervisor quit being mean to ya'll's' customers. Was able to wheelchair my self back home in a manual wheelchair. It took 2 hours. The Indian supervisor was very happy to believe the lies of that bus driver. Continue to treat handicapped people as if there are no laws protecting them from being discriminated on here in the U.S.. I think the bus driver figured it out. The more ugly she is to the passengers. The less people she has to ride on her bus, and Carts still has to pay her, her check. This Indian man was like she is staying on your route. I said I don't have the privilege of walking. She went off in 3 seconds. I have no way to defend myself. For my safety I will never ride Carts buses again. The Indian supervisor was like okay. Carts in San Marcos should be happy to know a handicapped women who can't walk has to manually wheel herself around in a wheelchair all over San Marcos. There was a young couple waiting in the Greyhound area. They told me I was not being rude to that supervisor. I have talked to other people they have told me that particular bus driver is very rude. Other passengers that told me she is very blunt. Then why on God's green earth is she working around people. Especially those who are handicapped and disabled for life. The main man a Indian supervisor has obviously no understanding of laws in the U.S. protecting the disabled and handicapped. How much more does Carts in San Marcos want to continue to be mean to people in wheelchairs .

Plus, they had THE CLOSEST docking station to ACL (by a lot), at the corner of Sterzing and Barton Springs Road. Far closer than the mandatory scooter parking (geofencing prohibits you getting any closer-you have to take them to Toomey). I made that mistake Day 1 ACL. I will for sure use these bikes again. Happy to have them around central Austin. *The payment options are clearly stated on the app and the website. Not sure what others are bellyaching about. I do miss having the option of smart cars because of the price and the parking ease. It would be better if they kept both. As someone who does not own a car this has been a godsend and allowed me to have a much more convenient lifestyle without the annoyances and expenses of car ownership. I used to use Zipcar and now I haven't touched one in years mainly because I found the set schedule and drop off points too restrictive. I generally only drive on weekends and rarely leave the city so it works out great for me. It's a really convenient option and while my friends circle around downtown looking for parking I have the option of dropping off at a car2go spot. Now the bad: TECH issues!! Every once in a while I can't end a rental for whatever reason and end up having to call customer service and wait on hold and it's a pain in the ass. Customer service in general is meh. While the agents are helpful, the company doesn't really show much appreciation for their customers. I mean I've been using the service for four years and I can't think of a single perk I've earned from that. Sure they had a little customer appreciation lounge set up for SX but no one was even checking if you were a member. They really need to set up some frequent driver perks and bonus time or something. After I had a bunch of tech issues I sent a lot of emails and stopped using the service for a while. Maybe if they showed customers more appreciation that wouldn't happen. It's gotten more expensive and with the new packages the day rate actually went up to the point of being prohibitively expensive. Back when they had the smart cars there were often day specials for $50 and now we're close to $100 with taxes and there are no more weekend day specials! That's just absurd. While I did the day rental a few times with the smart cars to go to Ikea, now it is completely out of the question and I just go to Enterprise and get a weekend rental.

Howard (aka Stop #5540) https://www.capmetro.org/stopdetail/index.php?stop=5540) is a park & ride, so there are 301 spaces adjacent to the train stop which serves the following bus routes in addition to the 550 MetroRail Red Line: 50 Round Rock/Howard Station https://www.capmetro.org/schedmap/?svc=0&f1=50&s=0&d=N 243 Wells Branch https://www.capmetro.org/schedmap/?svc=0&f1=243&s=0&d=E 980 North MoPac Express https://www.capmetro.org/schedmap/?svc=4&f1=980&s=0&d=N (well, you have to walk/scoot/bike about 1/2 mile to New Life Church on southbound Mopac to reach this one) Everything you need to know about how to use CapMetro services is available in their full system map https://www.capmetro.org/uploadedFiles/New2016/Plan_Your_Trip/Destinations_Schedule_Book/system_map.pdf and Destinations book https://www.capmetro.org/uploadedFiles/New2016/Plan_Your_Trip/Destinations_Schedule_Book/Schedulebook_web.pdf . Trains arrive every 15-30 minutes during the daily service hours, which vary according to the season (mostly whether school is in session) and day of the week. Keep in mind that southbound and northbound trains share the same tracks, so there's a limit to how many more trains can be feasibly be added to the mix. Check the full Red Line schedule https://www.capmetro.org/current_schedules/pdf/550.pdf for details and follow CapMetro on social to keep up with last minute service alerts. It's still pretty pricey to ride the train, $7 for an unlimited day pass or $3.50 for a single trip (which must be used within 1 hour of purchase). All day MetroRail passes do not require transfer fees, so you can take as many trains as you need to reach your final destination (although I tend to walk, run, or use a kickscooter, myself; you can also try one of the many bike & e-scooter rental options downtown). If you're visiting and will be using the train for 4 or more days, your best option is the 7-day pass at $27.50. If you are a student, a senior citizen, or one of a few other special groups, you can get 1/2 priced passes, but you need to show proof of eligibility when tickets are validated or checked by fare enforcement. Don't try to cheat, or you'll get a $75 ticket! More about reduced fares here: https://www.capmetro.org/rfid/ Perhaps because it is so pricey, the degree of riff-raff & shenanigans one encounters on the train seems pretty low for public transport, but YMMV. Members of the homeless encampment just down the street at the Mopac overpass do sometimes make their way over to the station, but we've never encountered any trouble from fellow humans at this station or on the train over the years. Morning & evening commuter rides are pretty quiet and comfortable, although you may need to stand during the most popular morning southbound and evening northbound trips. Back at the launch in 2010, the last northbound MetroRail trip of the day was around 6:30p, a bummer if you had ideas of heading downtown for an evening of merriment with no need to drive or park. That's still true most of the week (it's still a commuter rail service & it still shares the tracks with freight trains overnight) but on Fridays & Saturdays, we now have extended service until after midnight, with the last train from the Convention Center departing northbound at 1:45am on Friday night and 2:30am on Saturday night. They also extend the service hours during special events like SXSW and ACL Fest, but beware that those trains get packed! Another big change since the beginning is that the station's ticket kiosks no longer take credit cards AND they do not give back change. Instead, you get a paper voucher that must be used toward additional CapMetro services within 15 days or the value disappears! For this reason alone, it's generally to your advantage to put the CapMetro app on your smartphone and make your ticket purchases & activations there. You also get timely service alerts on the app when there are unexpected delays or other emerging issues with the train service. Tip: Follow on Twitter @CapMetroATX for up-to-the-minute news on changes to the service schedule & special discounts from partner businesses. Use the CapMetro comment form https://app.capmetro.org/ServiceOneWebCCR to report issues found at the station or with a specific ride experience. Trains fill up during special events like SXSW, so prepare a plan B (like ride share or one of the night-owl buses https://www.capmetro.org/latenight/) for getting back up north at the end of the day if you fail to get on the last train home.
