I am sharing this review because I genuinely want other pet owners to be aware of my experience with Dr. Shaw and the dental procedure performed on my dog, Penny. Penny is a 3-pound dog who underwent a dental cleaning and multiple extractions under Dr. Shaw's care. During the procedure, I received a call stating that six teeth needed to be removed, including a back upper molar located very close to the eye/orbital area. At no point was I advised to consider referral to a veterinary dental specialist despite Penny's extremely small size and the complexity/risk associated with that area. I also was not informed of the serious potential complications that could occur. Following the procedure, Penny developed worsening symptoms including swelling around the eye, pain, fever, decreased appetite, and visible distress. We returned multiple times seeking help. According to the medical records, the extraction site was documented as "difficult to see due to size of patient," yet Penny was discharged without additional diagnostics or escalation of care. The next morning, an emergency hospital immediately identified active purulent drainage coming from the extraction site. CT imaging and specialists later confirmed a severe abscess and infection tract extending from the extraction area into the orbital region behind Penny's eye. Despite emergency treatment and specialist intervention, the infection progressed to the point that Penny ultimately lost her eye. This experience has been devastating emotionally, physically, and financially for our family. We incurred nearly $12,000 in emergency and specialty veterinary expenses as a direct result of these complications. What was also deeply upsetting was the complete lack of personal accountability or compassion afterward. Dr. Shaw never personally called to check on Penny following the loss of her eye, and at no point did she apologize for what happened. I understand that complications can occur in medicine, but I believe pet owners deserve full transparency about risks, especially in medically delicate cases involving very small dogs and complex extractions. I also believe cases like this should be referred to appropriately trained dental specialists when necessary. I would strongly encourage anyone considering advanced dental work for a very small dog to ask detailed questions about experience, training, specialty referral options, and risk before proceeding. read more

Their veterinarians over the past 18 months have come and gone like a revolving door but most importantly, the culture here has changed to squeeze as much profits from their customers as possible. You know that feeling in life when you feel like your getting "played"? Every visit here is between $350-$500 and thats with me turning down shots. Everyone is very kind and caring here but everything is a soft upsell. On one visit I was told how important having my dog get Heartguard regularly was. Then I go online to request the medicine for my other dog, it's denied, and I'm told, "your dog needs to come in for a $130 examination to ensure he doesn't already have a heartworm". And I say, "But you just recently examined him, told me he was healthy, and also told me that when dogs have heartworm they're in excruciating pain so it's so important to stay active with the heartworm medicine." "Nope, the doctor will not prescribe this without seeing your dog!" This is just one example of feeling like this practice is gouging their customers with unnecessary expenses. Beware...this is a vet practice that has shifted their focus much more into a profit focused enterprise versus what is best for the end customers wallet. There are a lot of other nearby Vets that are family owned still with strong integrity nearby (ie: Dog, bird, Cat Hospital) that will act with more integrity around keeping visits cost effective while also keeping your dog healthy. After 4+ years going here and rooting for this clinic to be great, I recently had enough of the $500+ visits and I'm moving on. read more

I have been a customer since the end of last year, and this is the third time I get rude treatment from the technicians. I brought my dog Anya in today for her monthly injections and I was made to feel uncomfortable and like a liar for the clinic's own mistake of not keeping my dad's credit card information on file as he had requested on my previous visit last month when Anya had her physical exam. I have many complaints, including from that specific exam day. But I'll focus on today first: On my 9am appointment on August 1st I was asked to pay by the employee working the desk, I explained my dad had already provided his card information and it should be on file since last time I was there for her annual exam the technician even verified the last 4 digits with me given that when she tried to run the card it didn't work because they had entered some numbers wrong, so I called my dad and got the correct number for that tech. This employee said: No the info is not here; so I tried detailing what happened last time, but she proceeded to cut me off while I was still speaking, I then continued to finish my thought and she kept talking over me! I asked if they could check someplace else in their system and I was given a stern NO. This person stated that they could not ever save a card on file. The technician that injected my dog was not helpful either, because I had to get to the point of asking if I needed to stay there until my dad returned my call to make the payment for her to propose to send my dad a text with a payment link, to which I replied that wasn't possible because he doesn't have a cell phone. This technician then said that if my dad called we could get the card saved on file, which is contrary to what the employee at the computer told me in front of the technician. To end the ordeal, I said, well hopefully this time the card is finally saved, and asked for the manager's name to settle this, this technician then answered Aja in an overall unpleasant and patronizing tone. I had manners and communicated in a respectful tone throughout the awkward treatment I got from these women. There were no empathic statements whatsoever. The tech from today also said Anya had another medication on file to be injected each monthly visit and asked me to confirm if she does get this one, a medication that begins with the letter S. She said it always appears there, and I was just communicated this today? What if she had been administered this and it made her sick?? My other complaint is that the doctor that saw Anya last time for her annual exam didn't check her mobility by assessing her joints since she has arthritis. Also, when asked a clarifying question about how heartworm travels from one place to another she got very defensive because I didn't understand the way she explained something, and essentially got short with me and confrontational. All in all, I've noticed there's a pattern of bad attitude from the employees as well as this one doctor. There's also frequent miscommunication and disorganization. But most importantly, they don't know how to act in a stable and customer-centric way. I am done being patient with their apparent discrimination as a woman that is an immigrant. read more

They obviously don't need my review, but I did want to point out their unique efficiency in that they have a set-up where they don't make you sit in the lobby filling out a bunch of forms first, they quickly get you and your pet into an exam room, the vet or assistant enter from a back door to the exam room, if your pet needs an xray they swoop them through that back door to the xray area in the back and return with your pet, and when the appointment is over the point of sale can be accomplished right where you sit in the exam room from their laptop. No need to lug your pet around from lobby to exam room, then from exam room to lobby to pay. There is an entrance in the front and another one in the back, so u can use either one depending on where you parked in their parking lot. You can see the back work area a bit if you enter/exit from the back porch entrance/exit, and it looked pretty clean to me. read more

Where do I even begin! This has been by far the best Veterinary I've ever visited. My dog recently had 13 pups and my regular vet wouldn't see them all at once. At another I was quoted over $1,000 for puppies 1st set of shots. Thank GOD I found North Kenilworth as the entire staff seemed friendly. Everyone had a smile. I also had a small problem getting the puppies out of the car and I called them and 2 staff members came outside promptly to help me. The whole team is awesome. Dr. Holmes and his staff are kind, professional and reliable. I recently had to take my dog in for a procedure where he was put under anesthesia and most of his teeth removed. Naturally, I was nervous, but it couldn't have gone more successfully. They were communicative, informative and beyond helpful. Also as previously mentioned in other reviews, they have a very accommodating setup where you are ushered into an exam room upon arrival (in fact I have never had to wait in lobby once), the exam and payment are all done from that room. Due to my animal loving nature, I've been to a lot of veterinarian visits. I spontaneously decided to add an adorable lab puppy into my two cat, one American eskimo dog mix. Which meant, shoe loss, puppy shots and diarrhea. Bailey is silly, rambunctious and tried to leap onto the counter multiple times during our first visit at North Kenilworth. In her defense, the delicious treats were on the counter and she was only 9 weeks old. Our second visit involved less leaping, a pretty offended look at having her temperature taken and an adequate amount of treats. These doctors are kind, understanding, funny and extremely patient. The pricing is very reasonable and I don't leave with depression of dropping a months salary on vet bills. We have brought our 2 rescued pit mixes here for the last 3-4 years and have come to really love the staff here. Having 2 large dogs who liked to get into scuffles, we visited somewhat often. Unfortunately, the circle of life closed for our 2 pups but the staff here was absolutely outstanding from regular check ups all the way up to their final moments. When we went to other vets, we always felt 'on guard' as most vets pull at your heart strings to try and extract every dollar they can possibly get. This was never the case at this office. Their recommendations were always justified and very reasonably priced. If something was recommended but not totally needed the doctors would always let you know to help you save money. But most importantly, the care they received was always top notch. The staff took as much time as needed to talk things over and visits were never rushed. If we decide to rescue a pup or two in the future they will definitely be our vet again! read more

This vet office is amazing. This review is for Dr. Hoffman and all the vet techs. I haven't seen any other vets there. We started going to NK when we got our rescue pup who had a lot of issues - he needed an eye removed and a neuter and he had kidney issues which complicated the surgery. Dr Hoffman did an amazing job and people often compliment how good our dog's eye looks. He has taken us in during emergencies and seen us urgently so we could avoid going to an emergency vet and spending hundreds or thousands. He also replies to emails with clinical questions very fast and even in off hours. He truly goes above and beyond. The vet techs I've met have all been amazing also. They know my dog is special needs and remember him each time. They accommodate his quirks and I could not appreciate them more.
