Interesting sales technique. I guess for the uninformed it works. Had an inspection done by one of their reps. Comes back as my system is completely unrepairable. Quoted me a replacement gas system for $9K and an electric one for $7K. All the comments in the report stated not to code. No municipality I have ever lived in would they not grandfather in the codes that were used at the time of construction. They argued that it was just not at all repairable, then stated that it was an aftermarket unit (OMG it's an interregnal part of the initial build). Second opinion time, well would you look at that, repaired for $1700. Deceptive and underhanded business acumen. May this firm soon find itself locking the doors for a final time ASAP. They truly should be ashamed of themselves, but I doubt they are. read more

My husband and I purchased two gas fireplaces from North Country Stoves and had them installed by North Country Stoves as well. The first unit is a free-standing Lopi Berkshire gas stove and we are pleased with this unit. It has functioned well and is easy to operate. The second Lopi unit we purchased from North Country Stoves was installed by them in what was originally a fireplace designed for burning wood, which is located in our bedroom. We have experienced four explosions with this unit and have been struggling for months (almost a year now) to get it repaired (that was our original hope) and now removed by North Country Stoves. Their repair technicians have been to our house three times to figure out what is wrong and have thus far been able to identify a problem and then make a change that addresses it. The third explosion was forceful enough that it pushed my husband against the bed, and the fourth explosion roused our sleeping kids from bed and resulted in some minutes of fear and chaos until everyone settled down. The gas has been turned off since that time, almost three months ago, and the third visit from a repair technician did not result in identification of a specific problem. I find all four of the explosions we have experienced to be disturbing and a safety hazard, and am no longer interested in operating the stove without identification of a specific problem and specific solution. We remain very dissatisfied with this Lopi unit and with North Country Stoves for being unable to identify the problem. They have refused to remove the stove from our house and will not give us a refund or a replacement. They've been dismissive of the explosions, which they consider small, and tell is that the stove is "functioning correctly" because it shuts the gas off and does not continue to leak. We are not clear whether there is something deficient about the unit itself, the way it was installed, the way the chimney draws, or something else. We've been told we are not operating it correctly but no specific action on our part has been identified as the problem. Frankly, if the unit is that difficult and dangerous to operate, it's not the right stove for someone's house. North Country Stoves installed my fireplace eight years ago and have done the service/maintenance every year. The techs are friendly, professional, and respectful in every way. They arrive fully prepared to clean and address any issues; they even change the batteries on my remote. read more

I hired North Country Stoves to do an inspection because I was selling my house. They felt the piping for the stove was not up to code. I notified the buyers of my house of the issue and we (buyers and us) settled on a course of action independent of North Country Stoves. However, when my title company inadvertently sent North Country Stoves money set aside for the new buyers, rather than the money going into escrow, North Country Stoves ordered a new stove without my or the buyers consent (I did not even own the house at that point). A few months later, North Country Stoves threatened to take me to small claims court to get the remaining funds for the new stove (which no one ordered). North Country Stoves did not even know who owned the house. They held my money for 3/4 of a year and made us jump through all sorts of hoops to get my money back (with no interest) and then on top of it they charged me a restocking fee, on a stove I never ordered, for I house I no longer owned. I would not do business with them and recommend to stay clear of them. read more

North Country Stoves installed a gas insert into our fireplace today. The stove itself is wonderful - I love the style and function of it. We had a wonderful experience with Aaron who helped us with the ordering and scheduling process but had a terrible experience with the install team and with the store owner. The 2 guys who came to our home had the worst attitude. They complained, gave mediocre effort, and treated us poorly if we even spoke to them. I have worked with contractors for years and this was about the worst example of work ethic ever. The store owner of the store knew that it had not gone well and that I had concerns. When I stopped by the store after the install was completed, instead of giving me a chance to share about the experience, the owner only justified his employees poor attitude even though he admitted that he had spoken with the employee about the bad attitude a number of times through the years because of complaints from other customers. The owner would not honor a store coupon that had been sent out to thousands of homes across Anchorage although the coupon/ad listed no exclusions/specifications. I am thoroughly disgusted with the company. I wish that I had chosen one of the other companies to work with. read more
