North Beach Pizza is my favorite in the early 2000s. My go-to were Golden Gate pizza and San Francisco Pizza. Where else you can get clams on a pizza? :P And their crust is decent! I recently visited this place for a weekday lunch. Kids were getting a haircut nearby and we needed a place for lunch. We ordered a small pizza, half cheese and half Golden Gate. We also got their wings. They were both really tasty. Their wings were juicy! Service was decent - there's one waitstaff and he took care of us really well. We obviously left with leftovers. And the pizza still tasted delicious on the following day! Skip the fries though. My kids could read the menu and they made sure I ordered fries for them. If you must order fries as a vegetarian starter, get the potato wedges instead!! I am surprised by how few patrons this place receives these days. I saw a decent amount of foot traffic as we were seated at the booth by the window. But I guess office workers don't want to have pizza for lunch these days anymore. The booths look dated but they are still comfy! I feel like this location has been an anchor/icon in the San Mateo 3rd Ave commercial corridor and I would hate to see this place go. First time ordering deep dish from here. I would say that the deep dish is an "okay" imitation of Chicago style, but certainly would not be accepted if it was actually served in the Windy City. Flavors are okay, but I prefer the deep dish from other spots in the Peninsula: The linguine with clams in Alfredo sauce was surprisingly delicious. The pizzas were good. Service, could have been better. I like their pizzas, not my first choice but was still worth it. I just wish servers would check on the table once, maybe fill the water...never asked how everything was. Other than that if you don't care about any of those things, the you're good to go with this place. I'd give the pizza a weak 4/5 star (better than a strong 3/5). The restaurant seemed focused on premium prosciutto and other kinds of meats, which my husband is really into, but I'm not that excited by. I think this was probably the best pizza we've had so far in downtown San Mateo, but it was so much more expensive than other pizzerias that I think I'd rather go back to other restaurants instead. Stopped in last night for the second time in 20 years, looking forward to trying it again. We were cheerfully greeted by the young man behind the counter. I let him know we wanted to dine in and asked if we needed to order at the counter first, or if we sit down to order. (I couldn't recall.) He told us we could sit down, and looked over at the young male server who was standing near us and asked him if he could help us. He said, "why me?" then quickly followed it with "sure, I can help them." I asked him if we can sit anywhere and he muttered, "nothing is stopping you." Not a great way to start our visit. He continued to be sarcastic and condescending as he took our order. We ordered the Coit Tower pizza, two draft beers, a soda, and large Greek salad. The drinks took a while to arrive, and when they did, neither pint was full, and they each had a different amount in them. Our food was great, thankfully. The large salad arrived with no serving utensils and our server disappeared, so we used our forks to serve it. (One of our forks was dirty and had to he returned for a clean one to another worker walking by.) We would have ordered another drink but our server didn't check back in with us until we were finished eating when he said, "anything else from this table?" He seemed annoyed to bring us boxes for leftovers. As we were eating I observed his interactions with other tables and they seemed similar, and I viewed similar frustrations on the faces of other customers. The check indicated his name was Eric. Not only was it not even cut properly, but the cheese and toppings slid right off the soggy pizza. The fried raviolis were soggy, and unseasoned. The antipasto salad was old lettuce, literally covered in slices of pepperoni and or salami, chunks of mozzarella, and whole olives. Nothing chopped or mixed up. Garlic bread was basic and bad. Was walking around in San Mateo around 10 PM at night on a Friday. Not as much options were open but pizza sounded pretty delicious! It was super slow, so we were able to be seated. The server was super nice and friendly. The space seemed a bit older, but it gives you an old school pizza parlor feel. We ordered a small margarita pizza and half with chicken. We just wanted something quick and simple. When the pizza came out after 20 or so minutes, it didn't even really come out super hot as pizza is expected to be right when it comes out of the oven?? The sauce ratio was also soooo limited. They barely put any marinara sauce on the crust.... The cheese also was low quality. We also asked for more marinara and they advised they didn't have any so they put some in a tiny mouthwash sized cup.... The pesto on the side also did not have a great taste. We stopped in NBP to grab a quick pizza lunch and were pleasantly surprised. This place exists in a space somewhere between a pizzeria and a mom-and-pop Italian restaurant. They have a wait service for the dozen or so tables and a pick-up area for walk ins. We ordered the meatball appetizer, and it was nothing short of amazing. Flavorful sauce, tightly packed ball but uber tender. We decided we are coming back for the pasta dinner sometime soon. Now for the pizza which came out quickly. The medium crust was light and just right. The cheese was buttery and creamy (not rubbery) and the pepperoni and sausage had just the right amount of fennel and spices. We could not wait until lunch the next day to eat the leftovers. That's right, pizza for breakfast and it was just as good the second time around. Plus, I haven't North Beach Pizza in a long time and haven't been this location since I saw Chronicles of Nardia was in theaters at the time. Their pizzas are really good. This is for their delivery. I don't think it's the store's fault, but their number doesn't work nor does the "contact us" page. Waited for the pizza which was really quick. Turns out it was left at the door. I didn't ask for contactless since i had cash tip for the driver. I opened the pizza and realize why the guy ditched and ran. Pizza slid to one side like it was dropped and since it was left at the door, the cheese harden as such. The plastic center was broken too. A sign that it was dropped. This pizza is good and very pricey. I don't need my money down the drain. I think I read the other yelper's comment about their pizza being this way. Came in for a quick bite while checking out b street. The place has a retro diner aesthetic which I personally enjoy + goes well with the pizza. Staff was friendly and I had a nice conversation with one of them while waiting for my food. Ordered a slice of pepperoni and Diet Coke which came to just under $10. Definitely not bad compared to some of the fancier options, but there's some spots that offer a cheaper bargain. Not faulting them for that though, just being up front. Sat down by the window and was able to enjoy a bit of people watching while waiting for my food. Diet Coke was brought to me with a glass, pizza came about 10 minutes later. Pizza was simple, which was exactly what I was looking for. Pepperoni was good, cheese was stretchy, although I could've gone with a little bit more, and they even add a little bit of garlic around the edges of the crust so you're not just left with... crust. Serving size was decent too. I'm not going to pretend I had the best pizza of my life here, but North Beach offers a simple, affordable pizza experience that doesn't feel like you're getting the bare minimum. In a place like downtown San Mateo where it feels like you're choosing between RISE or Domino's, it's nice to have a place that offers a solid middle ground. Definitely would come back to try out more of their services pizzas, and I'll probably bring a few friends too! read more

It's been years since I've had North Beach Pizza at their San Francisco location(s). Stopped by the downtown San Mateo location recently for a late night snack. It was pretty crowded at 10PM on a Friday night but there were still a few tables open. Since it was within an hour of closing time, they ask that you order and pay for your pizza at the cash register as opposed to ordering from the waiter or waitress. We ordered a Medium Coit Tower pizza which was ready in just 15 minutes or so. It was covered with a generous amount of toppings! Normally, I grab pizza togo, so it was actually nice eating it fresh right out of the oven. Great service too! read more
