If you're ever in the area where a Nonna's is, GO. A Springfield classic at its finest. With two locations, we chose the downtown location. An old shop on the corner, this place is adorable. The walls are lined with old Italian pictures, the floor is a nice old oak and the upstairs over looks the kitchen, it gives it a nice Italian feeling. We started out the evening with a nice glass of house wine, sweet as it can be, and a classic Manhattan. Both excellent choices. Then we ordered the cheese fried ravioli and fried calamari. Although I am a fan of the meet ravioli not cheese, the ravioli was fantastic. I had been craving fried ravioli and this hit the spot perfectly. The calamari was delightful as well. For the entree we had the fried lasagna and added sausage. AMAZING. we had the clam linguine (it's not on the menu but if you ask they make it) it's literally the best I've ever had. We had date night at Nonna's, and it did not disappoint. We started with the balsamic vinegar, oil, grated Parmesan, Minced garlic and bread. It was scrumptious! We followed with toasted ravioli, which was fantastic, as well as the marinara dipping sauce. We continued on with our entree which was the best yet! We split one order of Lasagna Arrabiata. My boyfriend and I ate here last Friday. It was packed and I was very glad I made a reservation. Dinner started out with a bread basket with parmesan cheese and a parmesan cheese and garlic spread. And as an appetizer we got the humus which was served with carrots, celery and fresh peta bread to dip with. I ordered the fried lasagna which was cheesy and delicious. The sauce was amazing as well! I had gone to Nonna's other location but this location's food was 100x better. My boyfriend ordered the sausage and polenta. The sausages were so flavorful and the polenta melted in your mouth. To finish off we got the red velvet cheese cake! Our server was equally excited for us to try it. It was drizzled with dark chocolate sauce and a side of rich icing. The red velvet cheese cake was airy and rich. And the oreo crust was just as satisfying! If I could give a restaurant more stars it would be Nonna's. Ate there with a business associate. Masking was mandatory and they were seating at 50% occupancy, so I didn't feel exposed. Wait staff all were conscious of the issues and remained masked the whole time. Food is great. They had a quick, limited happy hour - but enjoyed what we had. Wine prices were reasonable and varied - not extensive, but good. Entrees were good - good selection, served quickly and hot, and the service was excellent. My husband and I came here for a relaxing dinner Friday night. They had live music (a gentlemen playing a guitar and he was really good) that made the atmosphere perfect. I had the fried lasagna with meatballs and he had the Greek. I can confidently tell you my meal was one of the best meals I've ever ate. The best meatballs I've ever had by far. They fell apart under my fork they were so tender. The sauce was sweet and the ricotta mixture in the lasagna was spot on. They had a large menu to try from too. My husband and I went went here specifically because of their inclusion in 417 Magazine's Best Of list. We made a quick overnight trip for my birthday last weekend, and couldn't wait for some authentic, delicious Italian food. Welllllll ... It wasn't the worst I've ever had. But it certainly wasn't the best. The highlights were a very robust and flavorful bruschetta and a to-die-for decadent tiramisu. Both of these items were spot-on fantastic. The bruschetta tasted very fresh and the tiramisu was one of the best I've ever eaten. It was hard to pick our entrees. There were several that sounded amazing. I debated going classic Italian or maybe something a little bit more elaborate like the gnocchi or a risotto. Finally settled on the spanakopita, which is classic Greek instead. I did like the flavor of this, although the feta inside wasn't balanced properly. You'd get a really nice bite with even flavors, then your next bite would be HELLO, CHEEEESE but not in a good way. So the even bites were delicious, and the extra cheesy bites I could have done without. This was served with a cold orzo salad side which was nice and delicate. My husband went with the cioppino. He tries almost every restaurant's version. I was scared for him because he's rarely had one to rave about. And while I'm not sure if he's raving over Nonna's version, he did definitely like it. The broth was savory and the fish was plentiful - good qualities in a cioppino because he's had some doozies! The service, however, was another thing altogether. Our server was nice, but she kept us waiting for long periods. And she was zipping past us like she had a fire in her pants. Like, slow down woman - you're stressing me out! It wasn't much longer when we realized there were only 2 people on the floor - our server and another - who were doing everything: filling water glasses, taking orders, bussing tables and bartending. I'm thinking perhaps they must've been short staffed or something. Nevertheless, our girl was quite distracting as she raced past us repeatedly for the next hour. All in all, an okay experience. If we were locals, we would probably be like, okay CHECK. And then move on with our life. It might be interesting, however, to try out the other Nonna's location to see if it fares better. read more

Situated in a beautiful older building in downtown Springfield this restaurant was recommended by the folks at our hotel. It has a quaint and eclectic style that nicely ties in the history of the restaurant and the building as well as showcases paintings from local artists. The waited even pointed out an old black and white picture of the space from many years ago. The food was delicious! We started with the toasted raviolis which were perfectly done, oozed melted cheese and came with a sweet and chunky tomato sauce. I had the portobello mushroom ravioli for dinner. It came in a creamy garlic sauce that was rich but not too thick. My colleagues both enjoyed their choices as well - the grilled chicken with polenta and the penne bolognese. During dinner I also had a cup of tea. It was refreshing and a nice touch that they bring you loose leaf tea to steep as long as you'd like with some honey and lemon. Ate here on New Years Day for the first time. Don't waste your time. Hit the Olive Garden you will have the same if not better quality and more selection. The soup was cold, they were out of the sauce I ordered so the waiter recommended something else. Not sure what it was called but it should have been called the Devil's Spaghetti. Ate at Nonna's for the first yesterday evening. The service was fine but the food,wasn't flavorful or interesting. Bread was doughy and closer to chilled than to warm. My Fettucine Alfredo with chicken was disappointing. Sauce was thin and missing the divine eggy, garlicky, creamy flavor and texture of a true Alfredo. We were seated at a mezzanine table with a clear view of the kitchen below. As far as I could tell the chicken breast was cooked in the flattop with no seasoning. Everything would have benefited from cracked pepper at least. What was available on the table was tasteless ground pepper in a grimy shaker. And speaking of grimy, even the most modest restaurant kitchens should be flawlessly clean from top to bottom. From my vantage point I could see the ceiling as well as the kitchen's work area. All the crud that collects around vents, etc was right there. And what was that shop vacuum doing on the kitchen floor during serving hours. All of these things are correctable. A Springfield only Italian restaurant is in the heart of the happening old central town. We, a group of three, found mixed opinions on the food, but the staff and service were excellent. The lady of the group ordered lasagne, and was asked if she wanted sausage or a meatball with it. The lasagne was ordered with sausage. However the lasagne was made with shredded beef, very different than expected. This tasted more like barbeque lasagne and was not enjoyed. Another person ordered a very atypical entre for an Italian restaurant, meatloaf. The terse male comment was: "this is the best meatloaf ever." Fetticine Alfredo with shrimp was our final order. Was visiting Springfield and tried Nonna's for some good Italian cooking! It was my first time eating bread dipped in an olive oil/garlic/parmesan cheese mixture and it was so good. For my entree I had the shrimp linguine. A subtle olive oil based sauce but it was delicious and the prawns were juicy and plump. I was disappointed with the appetizer mussels as half of the plate had mussels that were not edible (as the shells were closed up). We have gone to this restaurant few times as my son goes to Missouri State. We have always had a nice meal and experience. My wife ordered the Seafood Lasagna, I had Nona's ciapino and my son the Chicken Parmesan. All the meals came out hot and delicious. The wine was a great flavor enhancer.
