My wife picked up different cakes last Friday and I have to say that they both were the worst king cakes I have even tasted. They were doughy, so probably under cooked, tons of icing that tasted like pure sugar. Add to that the high cost of Nonna's cakes, we definitely won't be buying more cakes from her. I really wanted to give this a 3 1/2, but there are no halves on Yelp. The thing I disliked most about Nonna Randazzo King Cake was how tiny it was. The packaging makes it appear a nice size. So, I was shocked at what I found after removing the plastic. Not only was the King Cake small, but flat and a bit doughy in places also. I literally felt kinda played lol. I know I paid a convenience fee by picking it up from PJ's, but $32 for what appears to be a small King Cake is crazy. I'm guessing it ranges about $25-$27 in the actual bakery for this size. Onto the taste, it was amazing, I've never had a blueberry King Cake before and loved the flavor. I didn't taste as much of the cream cheese, but I was definitely satisfied with the blueberry flavor and the cake itself's flavor. It's a very good King Cake for sure. read more

It's been this debate on all the Randazzo king cakes. So I decided to give them a try and this one was just ok to me the reasoning was.. The moisture and the artificial taste, don't get me wrong I love a moist king cake but it was to wet. As far as the artificial taste I think that was the sprinkles. Dear Randazzo's staff, I am saddened by the lack of Mardi Gras spirit and New Orleans pride given in response to a not-received, shipped King cake from your store; specifically from the shipping manager Kayla Forjet at the Mandeville location. My partner Fred and I shipped a cake to my aging parents in Oregon who are both from Louisiana and grew up in New Orleans. My mom grew up eating Randazzo's cakes king cakes and because it brings her such joy, we decided $80 was worth it to send them a happy memory covered in Mardi Gras frosting to enjoy with their morning coffee. I am aware of the inclement weather policy on your website. I am also aware of you stating that you want your customers to be satisfied with the product you produce and send to people nationally and worldwide as a celebration of New Orleans and the beginning of Mardi Gras. I am mostly surprised and seriously disappointed that an almost week-old king cake that someone spent $80 on is acceptable for your shipping manager to encourage a patron of your business to consume and be satisfied with. It seems like not just a terrible business image or marketing decision but also a policy not in the spirit of Randazzos, of Mardi Gras or of letting the good times roll. Since you share on your website that the statistics of shipping mistakes make up a very small 1-1.5%, can you also share the percentage of inclement weather shipping refusals you send out as well? I am sure this is not the only letter sent out by your manager that told a customer to look on the bright side and eat a cake that is not yet received, that will be almost a week late if they even receive it because your cakes ship so well to other climates. Would that be acceptable for you to serve your customers? And if this were true, why is it stated on your site that king cakes are perishable and that they are sent out next-day-air instead of just regular Priority? My mom's loss of faith in the Randazzo name and fond memories of king cakes from your establishment has changed and takes away a truly positive memory, which is the worst part for me. I recently ordered a tiered graduation cake for my daughter's graduation celebration and was excited to see the final product. However, when I picked it up, I noticed that the top tier was slightly lopsided. When we cut into the cake, the top tier unexpectedly toppled over after only a few slices were cut. Additionally, the cake was supposed to have pearls on the top and bottom tiers, but instead, it had mini beads that didn't quite match my expectations. I was charged $160 for the cake and felt that the end result didn't justify the cost. I emailed them that day knowing I wouldn't hear anything at least until Monday but I haven't heard back so I just know to not purchase from them anymore when it comes to custom cake orders. edit: I was contacted and given an option to make it right. I had the privilege of getting a lovely King cake during my visit to New Orleans for Mardi Gras so I decided to have one shipped for my birthday to Colorado. I'm not sure if it was the way it was shipped or what but when I received the cake it was nothing like the one I had when I visited. I barley had any icing on the cake once I removed the packing. This review is for the king cakes. I have been a customer of this shop for the past three years now since it is the closest Randazzo's to my house to buy king cakes. The service has been okay up until this week. My sister came in to town on Wednesday and said she really wanted to get some cream cheese king cake. I called on Wednesday and the girl on the phone told me there were no cream cheese king cakes available for the rest of the day. She said no guarantees of it being available tomorrow and the only thing she could tell me was to call again in the morning to see if they have any available. So I called Thursday morning, a guy picked up this time and said there were no more cream cheese king cakes available for the day. I thought, okay maybe I called too late. It was already noon, maybe I'll call in earlier tomorrow. Friday came around and a girl picked up this time. Not sure if its the same girl from Wednesday, but this time when I asked if there were any cream cheese king cakes, she told me she could just pre-order them, but they won't be ready until Sunday!!! This made me furious because I had been calling since Wednesday. My sister from out of town really wanted to bring a king cake home with her and she was leaving Saturday. If the person who I had spoken to on Wednesday would have just told me to order them ahead of time, I would have been able to get it for my sister before she left. I said okay, I want two king cakes. The girl asked "small or large" so I said small. I would have ordered a medium if given the option. Sunday morning comes and I wanted to make sure one last time that the cream cheese king cakes were done before I left my house and wasted my time. I called, they said it's ready. I came in and the first thing i saw were a display of about 5 or 6 cream cheese king cakes!!! They said those were medium sized. I was confused because over the phone when I pre-ordered my cream cheese king cakes, she only asked "small or large" so I said small. I would have said medium if she would have given me the option. Luckily, they said they made us two mediums instead. Don't know if that was a mistake or not, but we wanted two mediums anyways. When checking out, the workers were not friendly to say the least. I am very disappointed with my experience this time around. My sister went home empty-handed which could have definitely been prevented if they had just told me from the get-go to pre-order it on Wednesday. It had some good competition and my wife and I disagreed on the winner but it narrowly beat out local favorite Pollman's by a whisker or three. Moist, delicious and satisfactory in a small piece. The only reason why Im giving you 4 stars is because I love the doughnuts. After eating a donut here, the rest of the donuts Ive had can never compare. Eating a piece of plain glazed donut is liking having a piece of cake. Damn it was good and it's huge! If you werent lucky to get one that was fresh, nuke it for 10 seconds. OMG...yum goodness. The famous Randazzo's King Cake of braided dough and cinnamon-swirl, sold here year round! They make a cream cheese and pecan praline variety (yes, both-together) that is rich enough to make you happy without leaving you a pauper. The doughnuts are a tad more dense than some, but very tasty. The apple fritters are just the thing to order on your "cheat" day: deep-fried and sugary. Traditional cookies, such as meringues and Belgian squares are offered, along with petit fours and birthday cakes. Like any New Orleans area bakery worth its salt, they offer Russian cake (it's a New Orleans thing: mashed cake and food coloring=deliciousness). It's definitely worth a trip to the Parish, so head on out, and stop somewhere for lunch while you're out that way. You know what to do. read more

I ordered two "traditional" king cakes from Nonna's. And needless to say they weren't cheap. Both that were sent were NOT the traditional king cake, but instead were covered in a black "tar-like" icing. According to the young lady I spoke with, they weren't Saint's cakes either. They looked horrible and totally unappetizing. Adding further insult to the purchase was that I called to see what happened, and sent pictures of both cakes. I was told that someone in management would call me, but now, four days later, NOT A WORD. Do NOT buy here. This bakery has the WORST customer service. I have ordered a king cake for our family to celebrate Fat Tuesday every year from New Orleans. I did not receive my cake on time for my celebration. The bakery advised it was the shipping carrier's fault, due to inclement weather. The cake also arrived in terrible shape. The bakery blamed the shipping carrier and advised there was nothing they could do about it because I did not take pictures. Rhonda, the supervisor, then replied to my email saying: I hope you enjoyed the king cake! No Rhonda. We did not. Why would you say that after I told you about our terrible experience and you know we did not enjoy the cake? Terrible customer service. The cake arrived after Fat Tuesday and was damaged because the icing was on the plastic bag you sent the cake in, not on the cake. The cake ended up in the garbage. Waste of money. My husband grew up in Chalmette and I lived there for 5 years with him. We have been gone for over 15 years now, but every time we go back we never miss a chance to buy from Randazzos in Chalmette. Purchased my traditional King Cake at a market on Esplanade Ave. There wasn't any cinnamon filling and not moist enough. Nonna's cakes used to be as good as her ex-husbands cakes, not anymore. Two stars: the icing was good but sparse and the cake taste and texture were good but not for King Cake standards. I'm the kind of King Cake fanatic that will eat myself sick with a good K.C.
