Chef Nat's Kitchen - Fried shrimp tacos with Mali sauce

Chef Nat's Kitchen

During the 2020 pandemic I've been sampling a variety of fried chicken sandwiches. I saw Chef Nat's…read moreKitchen advertising on Facebook and decided that I needed to try it. I'd never heard of them before, and when I went looking to order there wasn't much information. The primary ways of ordering were Uber Eats and DoorDash. Deciding that I didn't want to pay a delivery fee, I opted for pickup and was given the address of a house. Turns out that Chef Nat's Kitchen is literally Chef Nat cooking in his kitchen. LOL, can't say he did any false advertising in that regard! I didn't actually go in his house to pickup, but he seemed to have a good set up from what little I saw. The carport was fenced in with some seating and a little "Open" sign on the carport fence. He did also have a "Chef Nat's Kitchen" banner on the house, so you knew you were approaching the right house. There was an empty lot diagonally across the street, so it was easy to park out of the way. Chef Nat was very friendly. I asked permission to add him to Yelp - I felt I had to ask first due to his setup - and he quickly agreed. He also said he appreciated feedback, which seemed to be true; more later. The fries and sandwich were good. I usually find white fries boring and avoid them, but these had enough seasoning on them to give them a little interest. The piece of chicken was huge, hanging off both sides of the bun, and was topped with a sauce that had a nice little kick to it. The thicker sections were maybe a smidge dry, but in that "white meat chicken" type of way. The only criticism I had was the bun - it couldn't handle the awesomeness of the chicken - and Chef Nat said he'd look into it when I mentioned it to him. Overall it was good food and a small, friendly, black-owned business. Chef Nat said he'll be getting a brick-and-mortar store and I'll be looking forward to it.

The fried shrimp was not very crispy but that was only because delivery took a while. I am looking forward to try other things from here!

Lehrmann's Bar and Billiards

Where can you go to drink a beer, get some fresh crawfish, connect to local punks, and play a game…read moreof pool all in one place? If you're in Saint Bernard Parish, that would be Lehrmann's. After work one night, I hopped in the car by myself to find myself some trouble. It was raining, and I was in the mood for a local dive. With it's sign advertising pool, it seemed I found the right place. I took a seat at the bar, in front of a windowed cooler with a Crayola marker sign advertising fresh crawfish, and at a good price. On the TV was an episode of American Gladiators, which should speak to the level of sports enthusiasm here. Locals talked actively over bottled beer, and I ponied up fifty cents for a go at one of the four pool tables. It was Ego vs. Id, and I was going to win one way or the other. As my Id was pounding the crap out of my Ego, Tony wandered over. Who's Tony, you ask? Heck if I knew beforehand, but it turns out he's in local hardcore band Graveyard Rodeo. What's it to me? Well, here I am, mohawk'ed punk wearing dingy white-stained work pants in a bar of 40+ locals, playing a game by myself. If this were Oakland or San Francisco, that would be it, end of story. But that's not where I was, and people can be significantly more friendly here. We spoke about the local punk/hardcore/metal scene here, and where to find it (that would be Decatur St, apparently). Which brings me to another point-- reportedly, there isn't a difference between the punk scene, hardcore scene, and metal scene here. What would be three separate and insular scenes at home are one blended small community here. As if that weren't enough, after Tony takes off and I finish my game, Cheryl invites me to a game. 'Wait a minute,' I hear you asking, 'who's Cheryl? First there's Tony, now Cheryl? I thought you went out by yourself!' She's some local who's picked up a replacement spot in the night's pool tournament, and is getting in a practice game. Naturally, she hands me my ass, but as if on cue, halfway through our game pretty much half the bar saunters over to the remaining three tables, as if of one mind, and the tournament begins. Quite satisfied with the local hospitality and the local beer, I left shortly after. If I run out of new places to visit while on this short trip south, this is one of the select places I'll be coming back to.

Sorry, but there is NOBODY named Tony in GYR bro, whoever it was lied to you, being that you're…read morefrom out of town, and would not know better...but no harm done. At least you had a great time, and that bar is one of THE best dives around.

I've lived in the parish most of my life, so I've purchased food from here for years. Whether it…read morewas fish to take home to cook, boiled seafood, fried seafood plates, or even stuff from their cold section I've tried a good bit. Last Friday I went and got 2 stuffed crabs(in the picture). Initially I was like $13 for the two scoops of stuffed crab seemed high but I know crabmeat is expensive. Right when I was about to pay for my food the hot crawfish came out so I had to get a taste and ordered 3lbs. My total was about $33. Prices are cheaper if you pay with cash (they list the price with cash and the price if you are paying with card) so I'd say bring some cash. The crawfish were good as usual and were a nice size. Other things I've had in the past that I enjoyed were the crawfish fettuccini, shrimp poboy, fried fish plate, and potato salad. There is seating available inside but it's not a big place so a big group would probably need to get their food to go. Also this is a pretty popular place especially on Fridays so expect to wait in line or you can call and order your phone ahead of time (which I usually do).

The seafood had a nice flavor without being too spicy. It wasn't spicy at all to me but it did have a little kick. The service was really good as well. We almost forgot our snow crabs but they made sure we got them! I know where to get some good boiled seafood now.
