Total disregard for clients and appointments. I went in twice within two days, the first appointment somehow was double book because someone booked online after me. So I had to take 1.5 hours off of work. I showed up the next day for an appointment that was confirmed in the morning via phone call, after waiting 15 minutes with any interaction from the staff, in left. I actually needed a cut, but I felt the staff was more interested in chatting and having fun than talking to their clients. I missed a total of 3-hours of work and still am without a cut. read more

Stephanie was so good. I get my hair cut once in a *very* blue moon. One reason I dread going to salons is because i'm usually not in the mood to chat with a stranger (life is overwhelming. for me, silence is gold!) Stephanie seemed to pick up on my willingness to have silence and just let me be. Thus, the haircut was super relaxing. I closed my eyes and she did exactly what I hoped she would do to wash and cut and style my hair. I'll look for Stephanie next time I need a haircut. This salon is the absolute worse. They didn't color my hair how I wanted and I even went twice , my hair came out even worse and damaged than the first time I dyed it . They said they would fix it but they made it even worse . I wouldn't recommend this place to anybody, please don't even think of going here. And then I emailed the owner and she ignored my email so I had to email the girl who did my hair and then her boss emailed me back, they said they couldn't refund me for the terrible job that they did and all they did was offer me a 20$ off coupon when I spent over 300 dollars getting my hair done. Wow, Palmer made my day! I went in for a change of style, thinking I'd just have a hair cut...and I walked out a whole new me. She suggested some "baby lights" to brighten up my hair and also a razor cut, to add more movement and volume. I've never had either, but I was totally game and wanted a new look. UPDATE: had to quit going here after two bad color jobs and another bad haircut. It had potential at one time, maybe it will again. It takes a long time for a girl to find a decent, reasonably priced place to get a haircut. I totally envy boys who can just walk into the barber, drop ten bucks, and be happy for six weeks. After years of searching around Boulder, I finally found this place, and I've been consistently pleased. It's not cheap, but it won't kill your budget either, and cuts take about 40 minutes, with minimal salon-theater (e.g. tinkering with curling irons and tiny scissors as if fixing your cowlick is open heart surgery, cementing it into place with hurricane-proof amounts of spray and then parading products you can't afford in front of you with the promise they'll solve all of your hair issues... when all you want to do is get to happy hour with your friends.) With every cut, you get an aromatherapy scalp massage (who doesn't love those?) and they only use Bumble and Bumble products, so you leave smelling luxurious and looking good. Plus, B&B trains all the stylists at salons that sell their products, so you know that the person cutting your hair has more skills than the average scissor-happy Supercuts employee. They are owned by Bumble & Bumble and they just pressure and pressure and pressure you to buy their products the whole time. They even give you a list of what you should buy before you leave! A haircut should not be a high pressure sales pitch. And my haircut was just mediocre. And $60. I'm giving this 2 stars because they did not give me a mullet like Floyd's did. I highly recommend Sarah at Chicago Hair. Before I moved to Boulder, I had been seeing the same hair stylist in San Francisco for 7 years. I had a really hard time trying to find a good person in Boulder. In the past 3 years, I tried 4 other stylists and never loved any of my cuts. When a friend recommended that I go see Sarah at her old salon in Longmont, I was willing to make the drive to try someone new. You let me down, Yelpers!!! All those good ratings!!! After my own experience, I seriously believe that the 5 star reviews must be written by the staff and owners of the salon. I am new to Boulder, and when I called to make the appointment I emphasized that I was apprehensive getting color from a new stylist, and I begged for a competent, experienced person. My stylist was very nice (I don't want to trash her personally, so I won't mention her name) but she was awful. The color on my roots was much lighter than the color on my ends. So now, after $200 for a cut, color, and a tube of Brilliantine, I still have roots -- except they are light brown, not gray, and a stark contrast to the dark brown color on the rest of the hair. The cut wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great. It really was just an end trim and took about 10 minutes. Because it wasn't thinned out or shaped, my hair now feels like I'm wearing a big helmet (because I needed a real cut!!) I'm never going back, and I recommend that you don't either. read more

Being from NY, I am a total snob when it comes to salons (and let's face it, everything else) so it took me a while to find a place out in Colorado that I trust not only to style, but also to cut and color. I have seen probably every stylist in the salon for either a styling for an event or for a cut and have NEVER had a bad experience. I am now a regular and loyal customer of Shauna F. for color and cut and style and she is the absolute best. Although $125 for a full head of (great looking) highlights may seem a little much, compared to what it would cost in NY city for the same quality, it's an absolute steal. Since Chicago Hair is a full service salon, a wash and gentle styling is included in the price of the service. Shauna has gone out of her way and spent extra time with me and even taught me how to use a curling iron on my hair to get it exactly the way I love it. The atmosphere of the salon is very clean and comfortable. The North Boulder location makes it like a little escape from the chaos of downtown and has easily accessible, free lot parking, directly outside the door. I made a yelp account so I could leave a review for this salon. I have never had such a bad haircut experience in my entire life. As soon as I left this salon I broke down crying, like in the movies when someone gets a terrible haircut. I went in to get my hair shaped around my face, essentially bangs, and I showed my hairstylist an image of what I wanted. Even though I clearly stated that I wanted bangs that were well below my jaw in length, I received uneven, choppy bangs that are so short they end at my mouth. I am completely mortified, my hair looks like I have a mullet, and I can't even wear my hair down. I also called the salon ahead of time to ask if they would wash my hair, and they stated that all cuts receive hair washes so it is easier to cut and style, which was perfect since I had plans right after my cut. So I did not shower beforehand, and my stylist did not wash my hair, so I left with a terrible haircut (probably because they did not wash my hair), and unwashed, un-styled hair. read more

I had the worst experience at this salon! The girl who did the highlights on my hair and styled it supposedly use to do hair in LA for the film industry. Yet, I'm sure this claim is a lie. My highlights weren't even noticeable. My blow out was a frizzy and puffy mess! This is a review for Kara and Sarah. I have gotten many very "transformational" haircuts in the past couple of years. Each time I have had Sarah, she has been so incredibly friendly and professional. She always tells me how we can make the haircut I want while working with my texture and face. She is obviously very knowledgable about her profession! Today, I had Kara to help me with the remains of a haircut I had gotten somewhere else. I gave her a lot of freedom, showed her some vague pictures, and told her that I'd like for it to be "edgy." I had Meredith as my stylist. This was the first time I had been to this salon. I was very pleased! She listened to what I wanted, did it, and made good suggestions on cut and styling. They do push products, but they are also really knowledgable about how to use each product and answered all my questions, and gave me samples. I went to see Palmer to touch up my highlights and I could not be happier with the results. I wanted a natural ombre look so Palmer suggested balayage, which was completely foreign to me. I'm a little late in writing this review, as my appointment with Sarah was last fall. However, as I continue my search to find the perfect stylist, I found these reviews so helpful that I felt compelled to share my experience here. As I mentioned, my appointment was with Sarah. My last color had left my normally red hair almost black, so I wanted to lighten my hair color as much as possible (I know this is one of the more difficult services). She first began by telling me that would be impossible. Not true, and not what a client wants to hear. I know this isn't the case because I've gone through this before and have had to have stylists lighten up a too-dark color--and they could do it easily and effectively. Sarah barely made a dint. I could hardly tell my hair had been colored. However, the real kicker was that this woman was appallingly rude to me from the moment she laid eyes on me. I felt like she took one look, decided she didn't like me, and proceeded to make me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Everything I said she had to contradict. Everything I liked she hated. Anything I didn't like, she did. I felt like I was dealing with a "mean girl" from high school. Needless to say, I'll never go back to Chicago Hair, and I've warned my friends not to go there either. read more

don't waste your money at this salon. i got two very disappointing cut and colors in a row, over $450 spent and my hair looks like crap. bad enough that i must now pay someone else to fix it. i lived with it the first time, but the second time called back to schedule a redo. when i got there the stylist argued that she had given me what i asked for, NOT! and copped an attitude at which point i left. i really wanted this salon to work for me, love bumble and bumble products and its two blocks from my house, unfortunately my experiences there were so poor i have no choice but to go elsewhere. save yourself some grief and money, get your hair done elsewhere! ADDENDUM: one day later..... I went to this salon for a color correction and met with Sarah. My hair had just been colored and instead of suggesting a detox shampoo or a few highlights she decided it would be best to lift my whole head/entire color. She took me to the bowl and I'll have nightmares about this forever...my scalp started to burn. She bleached out my entire head...we went back to her chair and my hair was done. Totaled. Destroyed. It felt like the driest straw you can imagine. She could hardly get a brush through it. I almost had a nervous breakdown. Since that time (it's been about 4months) I've probably spent in the neighborhood of $1500 trying to get my hair back. I met with an Aveda salon owner today and he was stupefied by what had been done...the damage is still all there...he told me it was very damaged and had never seen anything like it (mind you, this after 4-5 months of serious repair treatments at other salons and treating it with the utmost TLC). When hair is fried, it's fried. There is no going back. Sarah slapped a few Bumble and Bumble conditioners on before I left but it was like a band-aid for a bullet wound. This was far and away the WORST salon experience of my life (and I've been to dozens). The only thing I'm grateful for is that hair grows back. read more

Splurged for a haircut and glaze color but really got skimped on service. The color ended up fine, and has faded fairly evenly. But even though I paid full price for a cut, the stylist only spent about 2 minutes on my hair. I gave it several weeks before writing this review to see if the cut grew on me, but she hardly did anything- hardly cut the dead ends off and made no effort at shaping. (And the place was empty so I don't know what her hurry was) Really disappointing, but perhaps others will have better luck. Personally, I'll stick to Floyd's and save my money. read more
