Quiet and peaceful ambiance, great service, fresh sushi. We ordered a sashimi combo and some simple salmon and tuna rolls for the table. The sashimi was very fresh! The salmon was especially tender and soft. The tuna was firmer, but had a fresh and clean taste to it. The spicy tuna roll is lightly spicy, with relief and texture from the cucumber. The simple salmon and tuna rolls were very clean and had a great fish-to-rice ratio. They also have $1 hot sake happy hour, which I intend on trying next time. I haven't actually tried their sushi yet, just their bento boxes. BUT I'm already a fan of Nikko sushi. First, how many bento boxes come with this much tempura AND something else?? Ok, maybe the answer is a lot, but nowhere else that I've been to includes shrimp and vegetable tempura in this quantity with their bento boxes. I love tempura, so I was such a fan! They make it so fair too - my husband and I each had one broccoli, one zucchini, one shrimp, one sweet potato, and one other thing I can't recall - so no fighting over who gets the broccoli or shrimp! I also love their service. During covid, you can order ahead and pick up, and I must say their timing is impeccable. I had an order placed for 1 PM pickup and when I arrived at 12:59 they were just finishing bagging it. Next time I ordered I wanted to pick up ASAP and 17 min later my order was steaming and ready. Yum! We visited during parents weekend. It was a little busy but we came later around one 1:30. You need to present your vaccine card. My kid wanted sushi since coming to UC Berkeley so we visited this location. We opted for the half n half roll, the Nikki roll and some hamachi. All of it tasted freshly prepared and the portions were very good. The prices are a little bit higher compared to a larger urban areas but that is mentioned on their website due to the rising cost from suppliers. The only issue that we had was it was a little warm in the location because we are near the window. We definitely would return and I recommend to others. Our rolls came with delicious miso soup too. The tables are laminated formica and we were seated under a very cold draft, so atmosphere-wise, I would classify this on the "casual dining" side and probably not the greatest place if you are trying to impress a date! The menu was divided into two tiers of sushi; there were expensive rolls like caterpillar and 49ers, and then more reasonably priced classics, like tekka maki and negihama rolls. The lower priced rolls seemed smaller than I am used to; and the expensive rolls seemed, uhm, expensive. The restaurant was heavily frequented by students, which is my only explanation for the biased five star yelp ratings that led me to visit this restaurant. For us, Nikko was a reasonable casual sushi experience, which adds up to three stars. Yay! read more

Food is pretty good here. For Berkeley, the prices are decent and the ingredients are quality. Service could have been good, but my interaction with the chef pissed me off on my second time here. I was going to leave a higher review to give some weight to the food here, but I figured this story would be worth telling. We ordered the flaming roll, where the roll is presented wrapped in foil on a base of salt/liquid alcohol and then lit on fire, which "cooks" the dish -- quite a show. The first time this dish came out, the flames extinguished after maybe ten or twenty seconds. I asked them to light it on fire again since much alcohol remained below the dish, but perhaps the server misheard me and had the kitchen remake it. The dish came out again, and the flames burned the whole time, and overcooked the dish, leaving the unagi-sauce and rice on the edges burned, with a very pronounced taste of acrylamide throughout the roll. While this may be me being picky, I think the duration of the burn should be completely up to the restaurant to design their dish, since the first time I ordered this roll, there were no problems. I walked up to the chef and I told him the dish was burned and was not edible. Instead of offering to remake it, he replied to me in a very matter-of-fact tone, with "well what do you want me to do?" Since I had apparently sent it back once, he did not exercise restraint in showing his annoyance at my feedback. I personally dislike confrontation especially in restaurant settings so I did not push further; while the roll had been discounted 10% by our server, the damage had already been done. Overall, while I enjoyed my visit my first time, when I returned and ordered identical dishes, my visit was significantly impacted. I would prefer not to return. read more

** The following review reflects my delivery experience DURING the shelter-in-place order currently in effect. ** Our perpetual state of self-containment has given us an opportunity to appreciate the restaurants we probably took for granted. Nikko was a fairly recent discovery for Jamie W. and me, but it has since become our go-to for Japanese in the East Bay, especially since it was on our regular weekend walking route. Now that we're shelter-in-place, we've been missing their rolls and kama, so it was gratifying to see Nikko listed on the Grubhub app. I didn't see my beloved no-rice Ocean Roll nor those $1 vessels of Hot Sake (such a deal!) - but what remained on the menu suited us just fine. The transaction and delivery experience was pretty seamless with our order magically appearing at our doorstep less than an hour after my submission. We liked getting sushi here. We picked it up to take home, but the staff was super friendly and helpful for ordering over the phone. The place seemed a bit small, but it was pretty cute inside. We got in and out in 5 min after we placed our order. The sushi tasted fresh, but the prices ($7-10/roll) was a bit high. I'm used to having a few lower priced options to round out an order, but here you will struggle to get out for less than $40 to feed 2 people. The Crispy CA roll was okay, the tuna roll was pretty reasonable for the amount of food, the yellowtail roll was pretty small without much in it. [3.5 stars] This was my first time getting takeout from Nikko since the pandemic started. Online/prepaid orders have a designated pick up table on the left. The cashier has a plastic shield, so it's covid safe. I don't doubt the safety or cleanliness of the restaurant. Pickup process was a bit messy. They were running a bit behind and my order didn't come out until 10 minutes after the designated pick up time (overall took 40 minutes around 7:30 pm on a Sunday). Understandable to be behind, but I think the issue was that the staff did not acknowledge the 5-6 people waiting inside that were trying to check in on their orders. Everyone inside looked really confused. I got the Alaskan roll and Sunrise roll. The salmon in both rolls were not that fresh. It had an older, more fishy than usual, taste. The salmon inside the Alaskan roll was more of a gray than orange color. The salmon topped on the Sunrise roll was slightly better, but were quite thin pieces. For the past couple of days, I've been stuck in quarantine. Nikko Sushi was the perfect solution for all my issues. I ordered the Lion King Roll and Crazy Roll. My roommate ordered the O. M. G. Roll. Both of our rolls were delicious. The fish was fresh and fish roe tasted really good as well. I enjoyed the Crazy Roll more than the Lion King Roll. The servings were also larger than I expected which was a nice surprise. I ordered online and it was still as yummy. They also offered large portions of wasabi and ginger. Love this place, we have came here a for both lunch and dinner. The fish are very fresh, food can take a bit long to come out but it's worth the wait. The oysters was so good and fresh, I think we ordered a few rounds . The sweet shrimp fried head was perfectly seasoned and had a great crunch just perfect to consume the entire head. The rolls are great too, we especially enjoyed the Hungry roll top with fried onions, shrimp and lobster. No pictures here since we were hungry so all of the hungry roll was down the hatch. They even have special lunch set price for dining in , it's great to take the kids for lunch so it won't break the bank for sushi and the kids enjoyed the bento box. Ordered to go via Uber Eats and the experience was not bad! I ordered the Orange blossom and Nikki roll and it took about 1hr plus for it to be delivered. The menu was extensive was everything looked so good but slightly on the pricier side but it is worth it for the quality. Only thing is that most of their special rolls had shrimp and I'm allergic to shrimp so it would've been nice if they offered more special rolls without shrimp. The orange blossom roll was nicely placed in the to-go container and is basically tuna and avocado inside with salmon and tobiko on the outside. The fish was not fishy at all so I was happy with the quality! The Nikko roll however was not nicely placed in the Togo container, would be nice if they separated the rolls with a divider of some sort but luckily I didn't order a saucy roll or else it would've ruined the flavor of the other roll. The Nikko roll was spicy tuna topped with salmon, tobiko and avocado. The roll was good, but it would've been better if it the spicy tuna filling was more flavorful and spicy. Overall, I was satisfied with my meal and they were accommodating! When placing the order, I asked for extra ginger and they were very generous and gave me 4 little containers. Easily one of our favorite sushi spots in Berkeley. Stumbled here because Tasty Pot just closed for lunch but we're so glad we gave this place a shot. We ordered three rolls and a side of oshitashi and gyoza and everything was delicious. Lion King rolls never disappoint, but the Crazy Roll is a must try and is easily our favorite. The Nikko roll was also a light roll that adds a fresh/refreshing balance compared to the other rolls we had. Portions were great, so two rolls and a side should be enough for two to share (we took home a lot of leftovers lol). Bonus points for the complementary miso soup. Service was also good and parking is hit-or-miss depending on what time you're going. You also have to provide proof of vaccination/ID. Pricing is a bit on the higher end, but given that it's Berkeley, I'm not surprised. We're definitely coming back to try some other rolls. read more

It does look very good and delicious but I as a pescatarian I had a plethora of options and they seem to have many attractive options. The staff members are very nice and generous. They check up on you if you need anything else, they fill up your water cups of water are running low. I did see that depending if you go on lunch or dinner Service is very nice. The good was a bit off for me but maybe because I didn't ask or just the certain fish I had tasted a bit too bland. I had the veggie udon and I felt like it didn't have salt. It was just the veggie broth flavour, a very flat flavour. It was good enough to comfortably drink on a chilly noon. Bento box looked very substantial and delicious. Depending on the protein you like and combination you get rice, tempura, and at times a miso soup. The crunch roll was very savoury and tasty, but I prefer with some fish in it. It's a solid sushi place in Downtown Berkeley- a great place for date night whether that be dine-in or takeout. Fish is overall fresh with thick cuts but not at Michelin level yet (if you're curious). I actually would recommend sticking to some of their amazing sushi rolls ie lobster and butterfly rolls. Their sushi rolls are great! The Raider's Roll basically a super California roll in other restaurants (California Roll with unagi on top). The unagi sauce was a little too sweet for me though. I felt a sugar rush after eating around 3 pieces and don't think I could order that roll just for myself (I'd rather share it, so that I could balance the sweetness out with other tastes). The Half and Half Roll has the same interior as the Raider's Roll (just a California Roll with tuna and salmon slices on top). Overall, the food and service was good. Nikko is for sure one of our go-to's in Berkeley. My bf and I get takeout here all the time, especially now with COVID. Reasonable prices, great fish, lovely service-- Nikko checks all the boxes. Location is in downtown Berkeley on the corner lot. With nobody out and about anymore, it's easy to find parking, pick up, and leave. For COVID safety purposes, all staff wear masks and social distancing is enforced. IIRC, they permitted indoor dining for a while, but I think it's been since prohibited. My bf and I typically call in our order and grab it 20 mins later, there's never been any problems. The staff are always friendly & prep our order beautifully, even in the takeout boxes. CHIRASHI: Mouthwateringly fresh and thicccccc cuts. Great portions and variety for the price. My only issue is that the hamachi tastes pre-frozen, but tbh, it's hard to come by good hamachi in most sushi places. The other cuts of fish are excellent quality. We've tried a handful of their rolls and appetizers, but almost always get their chirashi. Their rolls can be really hit or miss to me, but when they get it right, the flavor is phenomenal. read more

I haven't been able to find a great sushi place in East Bay... until now! We ordered via UberEats & picked up- when I took all the contents out of the bag, my first reaction was WOW! Everything looks so fresh, and the colors of the fish and toppings were very vibrant so looks alone, this place is already winning. Of course, taste is just as important (if not, even more important,) than looks but I can attest that the flavor did not disappoint and the meal was just as delicious as it looked like. We got two rolls, a chirashi bowl, and soft shell crab to split between two people and it was super filling. My favorite was the chirashi bowl (the fish tasted so good & like I mentioned, very fresh). I wish the rolls had a bit more sauce on them for flavor, but overall everything was a great meal! I also thought it was cute that they provided wasabi in a nice flowery piped presentation (as seen in the photo). If you need a second opinion, my boyfriend loves sushi and is really particular about it when he does get it, and he was impressed with this place! This was such a sad meal :( We ordered via DoorDash. Food came well packed and on time. Each item was flawed in some way, except the spicy tuna roll was fine. I eat a lot of miso soup and something was off with this one. Maybe it comes from a mix? It tasted really acidic and fake... The ponzu hamachi was not a nice yuzu soy flavor, and instead was intensely sweet. The fish was cut too thick and had cooked bc it was over sauced. The sesame chicken was the absolute worst item. It tasted like a mix of sesame sauce and American Buffalo wing sauce?? It wasn't crisp and all stuck together. Inedible :( My partner got a sashimi and sushi sampler. Both were not well cut (fish was too thick or hacked up). The fried shrimp heads were under fried. Fish quality was a mixed bag, with one piece of tuna being inedible. Not sure how long it'll last since it was part of their grand opening special. Honestly have loved every single roll I've had here. Lobster roll is super comforting and very saucy. The ocean roll was a new one for me with no rice - very healthy tasting. The cherry blossom role is a classic favorite. The first time I dined in there was only bar seating.
