They're on Snackpass so you can order ahead. I wouldn't mind going back to try out other rolls. My nephew got the Raider's roll and it was his second time and he loved it as well. For the price, I really can't complain about Katsumi Sushi. I paid $10.75 for a Philadelphia roll (salmon, avocado, and cream cheese) which is a steal considering it's location and fare. Typically, I see Phillie rolls go for 13 and above in Berkeley, so it's a nice change of pace to see something below that price caliber. Do note that their Phillie roll has a scant amount of salmon accompanied by huge globs of cream cheese, so I imagine this is how they keep their rolls so affordable. From what I could tell by the meager portion of salmon, the quality of the raw fish is actually pretty fresh-not overly fishy or slimy. The rolls are pretty decent, though don't expect a generous portion of raw fish with your rolls. The quality's just a notch above Safeway sushi which is by no means a compliment. But, again, you're not coming to this restaurant for its outstanding merit or luxury. This is made known by the lack of interior decor with its only decoration being its humble sign outside the establishment. Needed a quick meal that would fill me up so decided to try the Bento Box special from Katsumi Sushi. Ordered over Snackpass and everything was ready within 5 minutes, which was convenient and quite surprising considering the amount of things they include. The Bento Box Special comes with rice, salad, miso soup, 4 california roll pieces, chicken teriyaki, and 4 gyozas. The teriyaki chicken, was a little on the smaller side in terms of portion but still grilled well and maintained their juices. The california rolls were not really special and weren't super great in quality. Gyozas were fried to perfection and were quite good. If you want a fast meal that will fill you up, definitely get the Bento Box Special. The quality isn't anything out of this world but the meal gets the job done. I love Katsumi for their affordable options, as well as being able to go to them late in the night as they are open fairly late compared to nearby restaurants. While the food itself may not necessarily be the most traditional Japanese food, nor of any Nobu-esque quality, you get what you pay for, and a great value at that. For about $10-12 I can get a full bento box that leaves me full and satisfied. Their poke is also solid, and priced at a great point. Most of all, Katsumi punches well above their weight in terms of hospitality and service, and I have never been let down on this end from them. This place is the comfort food place of all comfort food places. Whenever I'm feeling sad or need a pick-me-up, I know that Katsumi will never disappoint. I always order either the California Roll or the Crunch California (fried CR with unagi sauce) and it's always delicious. It comes with ginger and wasabi, and the uncle working there is so nice. He's always friendly, smiles, and had the food out in a heartbeat. While you can't eat inside (it's in Asian Ghetto), there's ample space outside. If you go to Berkeley and haven't been here you have to becuase it's by far the BEST sushi spot at Berkeley :) read more

Not bad for sushi in the Asian Ghetto, I usually get the Lion King ($12) or the Dragon roll ($12) and it's always been good. Never tried raw fish or poke here but I'm sure it's decent. It's available on snack pass and they're usually very speedy with preparing the food. The restaurant itself is very tiny, you'd have to sit outside so it's not a very dine in experience. I typically try to avoid Katsumi, but I did eat here earlier today. Here's my assessment: Pros: * Price - not particularly expensive, but not nearly as cheap as Kansai, for example. * Speed - probably among the fastest sushi places in the area. * Location - prime spot in Asian Ghetto. * Environment - relatively clean for Asian Ghetto. Cons: * The chicken in the bento box isn't very good. It's pretty fatty and there are just weird pieces. * The meat in general (e.g., in the sushi) isn't the best. I don't particularly like the food here, and I think there are better restaurants within a mile. * There aren't really any drink or dessert options. * There's a 50 cent surcharge for credit cards, which is pretty big, but also standard at nearby restaurants (Gypsy's). The Bento Box is a decent deal, and you get some variety with the food (picture attached). All in all, Katsumi is pretty much what you'd expect, but in general I'd rather head toward Shattuck and hit something like Nanayiro instead. Came here looking for cheap sushi. The prices for most of the menu items weren't actually that cheap, but I ordered the bento, which was a pretty good deal. The food is decent, but you can tell that's its more low end--the rolls aren't made super neatly, etc. The bento did give a lot of food though, and I thought it was a pretty good deal. The restaurant is in the "Asian ghetto", and it looks a bit sketchy. There aren't that many seats inside, so you may have to sit outside on the benches, which aren't that nice. Considering the other options nearby (within the Asian Ghetto), I would say that this place is pretty decent. Conveniently located for Berkeley students. Good service, friendly people working there, and food is made quickly when it's not busy. My usual order consists of: shrimp fried rice, lion king roll, and agedashi tofu. Agedashi tofu is not as good as other places but it's ok for the price. The batter is a bit thick at times and the flavor is lacking but the soy sauce saves the dish. Lion king roll- baked sushi rolls generally are good so I have no complaints. Shrimp fried rice- generous portion with lots of shrimp and rice. It's flavorful enough but it's not crazy good. Only complaint is that rolls are a bit pricey compared to quality. My broke ass can't afford to splurge for mediocre sushi. There are more affordable options nearby for college students. read more

I opted for my usual, which is the salmon roll and salmon nigiri. Sushi took awhile, longer than expected, but it was pretty busy so it is understandable. Dont eat their sushi, miso, or seaweed salad. - Sea-weed salad is coming from pre-made batches of commercially available whole sale boxes. It was saggy and sweet. - Miso soup: zero flavor and served in a take out plastic cup, only the lid was missing. - Soy Sauce: only high sodium available. No low sodium option - Water: you have to get it for yourself from a pitcher from the fridge. - Spicy tuna roll: Again, I saw pre-purchased spicy tuna mix coming from a box, not made on the spot at all. Its the grinded stuff. - They serve everything in plastic take outs, even if you eat there. If you are going to eat here, eat the Bento boxes. They have a grill where the chicken is made fresh. I really like this place and their take on classic Japanese dishes. My two favorite are their Unagi Fried Rice and Chicken Yaki Udon. For the Unagi Fried Rice, it isn't too crazy but I really like the addition of onions and of course the unagi. The onions add a nice crunchy texture and the natural saltiness of the unagi removes the need for excessive soy sauce. As for the Chicken Yaki Udon, it's udon without the soup and I think for a quick meal, that's honestly preferable. The chicken is cooked well and there's cabbage, which pairs great. Of course, it's very savory. Overall, I think this place is relatively well priced and good for quick Japanese food. I would recommend staying away from their ramen as I didn't have a great experience when I tried it. But their fried rice and udon options are good! read more
