Pink Lady Roll and Solano Roll
    Kyra K.

Mainichi means everyday in Japanese, and I could eat sushi every day if I had the chance. Getting together with a friend, we typically eat on Solano Ave. and Mainichi Sushi was a spot both new to us! The restaurant is very spacious, modern, and nice. It's a casual spot with lots of neighborhood diners and families coming in for a meal. When we dined here, there was only one server and eventually the chef helped out. So be mindful of short staffing, wait times, and attentiveness shifting. What surprised my friend and me was how extensive the menu is! There are so many sushi rolls offered--classic ones along with their specialties. They also offer other common Japanese cuisine items such as bento boxes, donburi, etc. I had the Pink Lady Roll, because I love salmon. The rolls were massive--big pieces and lots of fish on top. My roll was spicy, but to be expected. I did feel like the only drawbacks were how saucy they prepare their sushi and how easy it is for the rolls to fall apart. The fish was good, but the sauce in my opinion masked the true taste of the salmon. What was appreciated was the complimentary Miso Soup and Orange at the end of the meal. I do recommend Mainichi Sushi for those in the area due to its affordability for the quantity you get. They have rolls for all different palettes. I wouldn't mind coming back again! The restaurant is located on Solano Ave. with street parking around.

Update with more photos: Always an amazing time here in Mainichi. Has become one of my favorite sushi spots.

Fresh as always. We have eaten here multiple times and always left with happy tummies. Today we ordered delivery by Ubereats. Everything was delicious. This is our go-to sushi whenever we want sushi.

Nice sushi spot on Solano Ave. Fish and ingredient quality was very good across all the rolls. Some of them were a bit saucy but nothing we couldn't handle. Appreciated the complimentary pre-meal miso soups (a bit too savory though) and the post-meal oranges. Worth stopping by again

Got tired of going to the same sushi spots all the time so I found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. The inside is clean and modern. Service was very kind and friendly. Slow night so she was very attentive. I ordered a side salad which was huge to my surprise and I assume the miso soup was complimentary because I didn't order it. The fish here tasted incredibly fresh and the size of the sashimi slices and on the nigiri were generous. We also got the 49er roll and Tiffany roll. I wasn't really a fan of the Tiffany roll, a lot of flavors and textures clashing- but my boyfriend seemed to enjoy it. My only complaint was that the kani (crab mix) are a little mushy due to too much kewpie/mayo. Other than that, the rolls were generally good. Their roll selection is also unique. I'll be coming back to try more.

I was in the area trying to find something quick for Togo pick up to eat after our walk. I decided to get 1 salmon skin handroll (it's very hard to find especially crispy salmon skin) so I still ordered to see how it is. I did not enjoy at all... there was depth of flavor just tasted burnt. Spicy scallop handroll was alright.. I've had better. Ordered few nigiri which was the eel and it great portion wise but lots of bones unable to enjoy. Ikura nigiri was as expected little bit salty which is fine. But Toro nigiri I expected to be more butter and melt in your mouth but instead very fishy and super thick. I don't think I'll be able to come back.

THIS IS MY FAVORITE SUSHI PLACE IN THE EAST BAY!!! (and I eat a lot of sushi) This place can get busy but there's never been a wait for a table when I've been. The wait staff is attentive and friendly. I always get the 8 piece nigiri combo. Every piece is flavored perfectly and it's plated beautifully. They make me like the fish I usually avoid. A complimentary sliced orange for dessert speaks is honestly my love language. Makes me want to give this place a 6th star.

Nonalcoholic menu at Mainichi Sushi in Berkeley.

Authentic Japanese cuisine is being served at Mainichi Sushi on a daily basis. Located on Solano Avenue near the Albany-Berkeley border, Mainichi Sushi arrived on the local scene just a couple of years ago replacing the long-standing Sushi 29. Now with an updated exterior with wooden paneling, and an interior that's full of light thanks to the floor to ceiling windows that open out onto Solano Avenue, Mainichi Sushi is ready to take on the world, and why shouldn't they, as the word Mainichi literally translates into the word "every day" in Japanese. Celebrating a recent weekend dinner with two friends recently, we were thinking of dining along the commercial corridor that stretches from the Albany lowlands all the way up to the Berkeley Hills, and none of us had ever heard of Mainichi until we did a little searching via our map apps. Once I saw how nice renovated their exterior looked, we took a look at their menu on our Yelp app and noticed how reasonable their prices were for their combinations and sushi rolls and decided to try something new. Despite coming after 6 p.m. on a weekend evening, there was both plenty of parking and not too much car traffic traveling up Solano Avenue, which would also be indicative of how busy they were, as they were not packed with customers and we were sitting at a table of four right away. The menu at Mainichi Sushi is separated into categories including Appetizers; Kitchen, which was a variety of hot menu items; Rolls; Veggie Rolls; Special Rolls; Deep Fried Rolls; Teriyaki Plate; Sandwiches; Bento Box; Donburi; Ramen; Udon; Sashimi; Sushi; Hand Rolls; Sashimi & Sushi Special; and Dessert. After bringing our table three bowls of complimentary miso soup, we knew we wanted to share everything, so we ordered one of their Bento Box, which is served with steamed rice and a salad. You are supposed to select three menu items from columns labeled A, B, and C. We ordered beef teriyaki, tempura, and sashimi, of which we selected their salmon from options that also included tuna and hamachi. We also ordered their 15 piece Sashimi Tasting from their Sashimi & Sushi Special menu, their Hamachi Kama, which is grilled yellowtail cheek from their kitchen section of their menu, and their Jasmine Blossom Roll from their Special Rolls section of their menu, which featured yellowtail, avocado and tobiko. The latter roll was one of the first things to be brought out to our table and it was the perfect starter to what would be a wonderfully filling meal. Simple as it only had one freshly sliced raw fish, it was a nice palate cleanser. Then we were presented with our Sashimi Tasting, which featured no fewer than sixteen pieces of freshly sliced fish. I particularly liked the fresh Tai fish or Japanese sea bream and it was so rich with flavor. After enjoying some lighter bites, out came both of our cooked entrées, led by our Bento Box dinner, which was easily shareable between three people. I have to admit a majority of elements of our Bento Box were rather subpar as the beef teriyaki was overcooked and the tempura, although delicious, was rather unremarkable. Although it came with sliced sashimi at an additional cost, I wouldn't recommend ordering this entrée again, as they have other items on their menu that are much better, which includes their Hamachi Kama, which was buttery and nicely grilled at the same time. We decided to order one more roll as our dinner progressed, we ordered one more of their speciality sushi rolls, and their Solano Roll, with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, unagi, cucumber, avocado and tobiko, had an overabundance of ingredients with every bite, but still was very good and satiated our appetites. We had a wonderful time at Mainichi Sushi, as everything was fresh and authentic, as their staff clearly knew what they were doing. Our total bill was $134.51 before gratuity was added in, which was rather reasonable considering how much food we enjoyed this evening, and we were able to take home a few extra small bites for a future meal. We cannot wait to return to Mainichi Sushi in the future, as we now have a place where we can take visitors who have a craving for freshly sliced and prepared Japanese raw fish and sushi rolls. Here's hoping that Mainichi Sushi will reign along Solano Avenue for many years to come!

I've loved this place before but we had such a bad experience tonight that I'm honestly concerned. I'm currently pregnant so can't eat raw fish but love sushi, so we ordered a couple things with only cooked ingredients. One of the rolls we ordered had raw fish they didn't list, so I couldn't eat it. My husband called and they simply said online menu was wrong but didn't apologize or say they'd update it. Just said we could order something different (and drive all the way back to get it since we got take outs). There are various reasons people can't eat raw fish or certain ingredients. They need to list them properly and remedy it when they don't. We also ordered their grilled squid, which was just awful. Totally flavorless. We thought we were having a special treat but tonight's dinner was terrible.

Food was amazing, service spectacular and ambiance nice. Also, the cleanliness of this restaurant is impressive. Everything we ate was delicious and I recommend you give this spot a try.

Ended up with some of my current faves: hamachi nigiri, California roll, yam roll, and salmon skin roll. Everything was thoughtful, well prepared, and delicious. It was just enough food and I was good for the night. On our second visit, my hubby and I brought my dad for lunch to celebrate his 88th birthday. It was pouring rain outside but we were fortunate to get parking right outside the door. We ended up sitting by the window which was the same table we sat at during our first visit. We ordered gyoza (6) for the table. We all ordered bento. Dad had the beef short ribs and California roll, hubby had the Vegetable tempura and California roll, I had the Saba shiyoyaki and hamachi sashimi. All three came with miso soup and salad. Everything was delicious. My fish was well seasoned and moist, dad's beef short ribs were tender, hubby's tempura was light and crisp. Lunch was very reasonably priced for all we ordered. I am definitely a fan of this place and look forward to dining here again.

I see a lot of people ordering maybe 3-4 handrolls and sharing appetizers but I mainly focus on the handrolls. These handrolls are on average 2-3 bites for me, 2 would be a big bite. There is no discount if you order from a set so order the sets only if you truly want every item in the list. If you come for lunch, take a look at their lunch sets because it comes out to only a couple dollars more and you get cucumber and edamame as an appetizer which is enough to share amongst two people. I love that they make the sushi rice vinegary here. I enjoy most of the items that I normally would like, there isn't a bad one except sometimes the black garlic aioli on the seared albacore tastes a bit fatty to me. Otherwise everything I order from my pictures are always fresh and good. One thing I noticed for the snow crab and chives is that they do not use mayo here compared to their Oakland location. I loved the ocean trout I had in early May and sad to see it gone by the end of May, it was sweet and fresh. Hope it comes back soon, @manager, let me know! lol thanks P.S. I do have a suggestion about the timing that food comes out, one time I was there for lunch and our table specifically had large gaps between the rolls coming out. I'm talking about 15 minutes before the next set comes out while other tables get multiple things in the meantime. After 45 min, I finally said something and the staff was able to get everything else out in 5 min so the kitchen was not backed up, she said it was some kind of timer the chef sets and maybe something was wrong there. I had brought a friend so I felt really bad for him to have a bad experience with the wait time but other than that the food was great.

Review for dinner service on 6 March 25…read more I had been trying off and on to get a booking but nothing was ever available, so I was pleasantly surprised to snag a seating for two within a week of the reservation because a fellow Yelper cancelled her reservation (thank you Sarah T!) The following week, we were in for a wonderful, delicious and entertaining evening. The two other couples had made their reservations back in December, so I felt very lucky we did not have as long a wait. Chef Aki-san and Michiko-san are a husband and wife team. At 6pm, the door opened and Michiko-san invited the six of us to choose a seat at the sushi bar. We all sat down before a simple place setting: a square ceramic plate, hashioki (chopstick rests), hashi (chopsticks, paper napkin and oshibori (towel for wiping your fingers). She handed us a menu and checked in with everyone to see if there were any dietary restrictions or allergies, took our drink orders and a brought a small bowl of edamame for each couple. We declined ordering any side dishes because I suspected that the 16-item omakase selection would be more than enough for the evening. As it turned out, two salads were added to our already extensive menu. Nommmm ... more tastes for me :D As we drank and munched on edamame, we watched Aki-san stocking the bar with ingredients he would be serving to us. He introduced himself and in turn we introduced ourselves - where we were from, how we learned of the restaurant, etc. It turned out to be the first time for all of us. During the course of the evening, we learned quite a bit about his history and experience working as a sushi chef before opening his own restaurant. Our menu (in order) for the evening: -Tako and Sunomono salad with shiso leaf, drizzled with a light miso sauce -Blue fin toro -Ika/squid -Hokkaido scallop -Ebi/fresh water shrimp -Sake/salmon -Saba/mackerel -Ankimono (Monkfish liver) and Sunomono salad with scallions and tobiko, shiso leaf with a ponzo sauce -Ikura, avocado and tobiko -A5 wagyu -Seared albacore -Hokkaido uni -Buri/ hamachi yellowtail -Blue fin toro -Sake/salmon cold smoked with hickory -Anago (fresh water eel) -Unagi (salt water eel) -Tamagoyaki Everything was incredibly fresh and tasted of the sea. Each piece was carefully prepared, perfectly seasoned, beautiful on the plate. He talked about each item as we tasted and ate. I loved watching as he rubbed the wasabi root against a metal shark skin grater, a tool he has had forever. Chef Aki-san chided me when I confessed I was eating the nigiri in two bites - apparently that is the wrong way to eat! Nigiri is meant to be eaten in one bite, the logic being that you don't get the full experience of the taste and flavour in two bites. My issue is that most nigiri sushi these days have too much rice that my mouth is too full to appreciate the flavour. However, he prepares "low carb" portions so the fish and beef are highlighted, yet all in balance. To sum things up - the food and presentation was perfect. I am not a fan of eel, so those were my least favourite bites. It was my first time eating monkfish liver. I found it quite delicious and would definitely eat it again. Mitchiko-san was very sweet and attentive, noting if we needed refills of water or sake jars. The atmosphere overall was light, friendly and jovial, and we enjoyed the company of who we were dining with. Not to mention that Aki-san is quite entertaining in his own right. Note: There is only one service per evening so you will not feel rushed to eat and dash. We did not get out of there until 9:30pm. He also mentioned that starting in June they will be cutting back to two days a week - Friday and Saturday only - something to keep in mind. Will try our luck getting reservations again in about 7 months to celebrate our birthdays and anniversary.
