I tried this place on a whim while visiting Berkeley and it's become one of my favorite sushi spots!! We arrived around lunchtime on a Friday and to our surprise it was mostly empty aside from a couple of tables. The restaurant has a lot of indoor seating and is very cozy. We were seated right away and ordered some garlic edamame to start. The portion size was amazing!!! Probably double the amount for the same price compared to other restaurants, and it was delicious too. It was super garlicky and cooked down enough to where it didn't have that raw garlic spicyness. For rolls we ordered the Cherry Blossom roll, Pink Lady roll, and some salmon nigiri. The fish on the two rolls was cut super thick! Everything was fresh and well proportioned, including the nigiri which was super buttery and with not too much rice. We will definitely be returning when we are in the area, and hope to see it busier as they deserve so much business!! read more

Mainichi means everyday in Japanese, and I could eat sushi every day if I had the chance. Getting together with a friend, we typically eat on Solano Ave. and Mainichi Sushi was a spot both new to us! The restaurant is very spacious, modern, and nice. It's a casual spot with lots of neighborhood diners and families coming in for a meal. When we dined here, there was only one server and eventually the chef helped out. So be mindful of short staffing, wait times, and attentiveness shifting. What surprised my friend and me was how extensive the menu is! There are so many sushi rolls offered--classic ones along with their specialties. They also offer other common Japanese cuisine items such as bento boxes, donburi, etc. I had the Pink Lady Roll, because I love salmon. The rolls were massive--big pieces and lots of fish on top. My roll was spicy, but to be expected. I did feel like the only drawbacks were how saucy they prepare their sushi and how easy it is for the rolls to fall apart. The fish was good, but the sauce in my opinion masked the true taste of the salmon. What was appreciated was the complimentary Miso Soup and Orange at the end of the meal. I do recommend Mainichi Sushi for those in the area due to its affordability for the quantity you get. They have rolls for all different palettes. I wouldn't mind coming back again! I ordered the Solano roll and it was one of the worst sushi experiences I've ever had. Sushi is usually cold, but this Sushi was warm, as if it had been sitting out. The rice wasn't sticky, but falling apart and moist. It was not tasty. I won't be returning. read more

Got tired of going to the same sushi spots all the time so I found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. The inside is clean and modern. Service was very kind and friendly. Slow night so she was very attentive. I ordered a side salad which was huge to my surprise and I assume the miso soup was complimentary because I didn't order it. The fish here tasted incredibly fresh and the size of the sashimi slices and on the nigiri were generous. We also got the 49er roll and Tiffany roll. I wasn't really a fan of the Tiffany roll, a lot of flavors and textures clashing- but my boyfriend seemed to enjoy it. My only complaint was that the kani (crab mix) are a little mushy due to too much kewpie/mayo. Other than that, the rolls were generally good. Their roll selection is also unique. I decided to get 1 salmon skin handroll (it's very hard to find especially crispy salmon skin) so I still ordered to see how it is. I did not enjoy at all... there was depth of flavor just tasted burnt. Spicy scallop handroll was alright.. I've had better. Ordered few nigiri which was the eel and it great portion wise but lots of bones unable to enjoy. Ikura nigiri was as expected little bit salty which is fine. But Toro nigiri I expected to be more butter and melt in your mouth but instead very fishy and super thick. I don't think I'll be able to come back. read more

The hamachi kama was a large piece of fish and very well cooked. I was especially happy with the yakisoba as it was well seasoned but not too salty, which I find in some places. Authentic Japanese cuisine is being served at Mainichi Sushi on a daily basis. Located on Solano Avenue near the Albany-Berkeley border, Mainichi Sushi arrived on the local scene just a couple of years ago replacing the long-standing Sushi 29. Now with an updated exterior with wooden paneling, and an interior that's full of light thanks to the floor to ceiling windows that open out onto Solano Avenue, Mainichi Sushi is ready to take on the world, and why shouldn't they, as the word Mainichi literally translates into the word "every day" in Japanese. Celebrating a recent weekend dinner with two friends recently, we were thinking of dining along the commercial corridor that stretches from the Albany lowlands all the way up to the Berkeley Hills, and none of us had ever heard of Mainichi until we did a little searching via our map apps. Once I saw how nice renovated their exterior looked, we took a look at their menu on our Yelp app and noticed how reasonable their prices were for their combinations and sushi rolls and decided to try something new. Despite coming after 6 p.m. on a weekend evening, there was both plenty of parking and not too much car traffic traveling up Solano Avenue, which would also be indicative of how busy they were, as they were not packed with customers and we were sitting at a table of four right away. The menu at Mainichi Sushi is separated into categories including Appetizers; Kitchen, which was a variety of hot menu items; Rolls; Veggie Rolls; Special Rolls; Deep Fried Rolls; Teriyaki Plate; Sandwiches; Bento Box; Donburi; Ramen; Udon; Sashimi; Sushi; Hand Rolls; Sashimi & Sushi Special; and Dessert. After bringing our table three bowls of complimentary miso soup, we knew we wanted to share everything, so we ordered one of their Bento Box, which is served with steamed rice and a salad. You are supposed to select three menu items from columns labeled A, B, and C. We ordered beef teriyaki, tempura, and sashimi, of which we selected their salmon from options that also included tuna and hamachi. We also ordered their 15 piece Sashimi Tasting from their Sashimi & Sushi Special menu, their Hamachi Kama, which is grilled yellowtail cheek from their kitchen section of their menu, and their Jasmine Blossom Roll from their Special Rolls section of their menu, which featured yellowtail, avocado and tobiko. The latter roll was one of the first things to be brought out to our table and it was the perfect starter to what would be a wonderfully filling meal. Simple as it only had one freshly sliced raw fish, it was a nice palate cleanser. Then we were presented with our Sashimi Tasting, which featured no fewer than sixteen pieces of freshly sliced fish. I particularly liked the fresh Tai fish or Japanese sea bream and it was so rich with flavor. After enjoying some lighter bites, out came both of our cooked entrées, led by our Bento Box dinner, which was easily shareable between three people. I have to admit a majority of elements of our Bento Box were rather subpar as the beef teriyaki was overcooked and the tempura, although delicious, was rather unremarkable. Although it came with sliced sashimi at an additional cost, I wouldn't recommend ordering this entrée again, as they have other items on their menu that are much better, which includes their Hamachi Kama, which was buttery and nicely grilled at the same time. We decided to order one more roll as our dinner progressed, we ordered one more of their speciality sushi rolls, and their Solano Roll, with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, unagi, cucumber, avocado and tobiko, had an overabundance of ingredients with every bite, but still was very good and satiated our appetites. We had a wonderful time at Mainichi Sushi, as everything was fresh and authentic, as their staff clearly knew what they were doing. Our total bill was $134.51 before gratuity was added in, which was rather reasonable considering how much food we enjoyed this evening, and we were able to take home a few extra small bites for a future meal. We cannot wait to return to Mainichi Sushi in the future, as we now have a place where we can take visitors who have a craving for freshly sliced and prepared Japanese raw fish and sushi rolls. I've loved this place before but we had such a bad experience tonight that I'm honestly concerned. I'm currently pregnant so can't eat raw fish but love sushi, so we ordered a couple things with only cooked ingredients. One of the rolls we ordered had raw fish they didn't list, so I couldn't eat it. My husband called and they simply said online menu was wrong but didn't apologize or say they'd update it. Just said we could order something different (and drive all the way back to get it since we got take outs). There are various reasons people can't eat raw fish or certain ingredients. They need to list them properly and remedy it when they don't. We also ordered their grilled squid, which was just awful. Totally flavorless. We thought we were having a special treat but tonight's dinner was terrible. read more

Gee, I walk on Solano Avenue with some frequency but will admit I am the classic non-peripheral walker, the kind that focuses on going forward and never looks at the windows or the traffic until I absolutely have to. That's my only explanation for not noticing that the Sushi 29 had closed with this more fashion-forward sushi spot taking its place well over a year ago. When I finally did notice there was a different name, I still wasn't excited to try it because I just figured it would be as lackluster as Sushi 29 was. I was happily proven wrong when I decided to stop in during the middle of a light rain drizzle. Figuring I could avoid getting more wet than I was, I decided to have lunch here. The first thing I noticed was how reasonable the pricing seemed to be. Out of their extensive roll selection, I couldn't help but notice the $15 Ninja which was their no-rice option. What a disappointment Mainichi is! If you'd like good sushi or tempura or even miso soup, go next store to Akemi. Or, for just sushi, travel up the street to Sakana in Kensington. But, let's talk about Mainichi. I ordered miso soup to start -- way too salty, one lonely piece of tofu and one green at the bottom at the bottom. Next was the mixed tempura appetizer. Mainichi tempura batter was more akin to a batter you might find on fried chicken. It was heavy and seemed to have an extra layer of bread crumbs on it. The sweet potatoes were not of good quality and the other vegetables were undistinguished. Strange to eat the shrimp with a non-tempura type batter on it. Finally the sushi -- the rice was soggy! I have eaten sushi all over the world and never has the rice been this soggy. The sushi--a roll comprised of salmon, rice, and avocado--was inedible. Gee, too bad, I hate to write unflattering things about a neighborhood restaurant, but I can't recommend Mainichi at all. read more

Another sushi adventure in the books! Whenever I'm running errands in a different part of the bay, I make it a point to go on a food adventure. Solano Ave has so many tasty restaurants and this new sushi spot looked legit! Inside was tastefully modern and clean and they had an impressive menu. I sat by the window and ordered 2 rolls. -Broadway: shrimp tempura, crab topped with salmon, hamachi, and avocado- $15 -Solano: salmon, hamachi topped with unagi and avocado -$15 Both rolls were neatly made and looked really yummy - my only gripe was the unagi on the Solano roll was a bit tough, like it wasn't heated enough - I'm used to melt in your mouth unagi. I let the sushi chef know so hopefully they fix that for future orders. Broadway roll was delicious! My server was friendly and gave me complimentary miso soup, green tea, and a refreshing nicely cut orange for dessert. Overall lunch experience was great - I'd return to try more creative rolls and the bento boxes! read more

This is a cute restaurant with a nice ambiance with good quality food. It's not a super big place but we got here early enough for lunch that there was still plenty of seating available. The prices are a little on the high side - it costs $40 to get a 12-piece order of assorted sashimi, but the cuts are decent and the fish is very fresh. The service is also very friendly and responsive here. Overall, we had a nice meal experience here. read more

All about their lunch special! Came by on a Friday afternoon at 2:15pm for a late lunch. The main eating area is spacious with intentional decor that makes for a classy-casual dining experience. We ordered the Chicken Karaage, In & Out roll, and Mountain Roll to share. Because we came over lunch, they also provided a glass of genmacha tea, an appetizer bowl of miso soup, and a sliced half orange for dessert- all included with our order! Ok but this little gem is the cutest. Came on a Sunday afternoon - the food was amazing. The service was great too, the entire place was super clean, and they were friendly as well. Let's start off w the edamame they were so good. And you really couldn't stop eating them. The miso soup was ok (too salty for me), but I think I'm also accustomed to eating low salt. The gyoza was so crunchy around the edges. I love that! The stuffing was just as good, and we probably ate that super quick. The sushi and for the life of me I cannot remember the names (sorry) were so refreshing and just good. I can't wait to come back and try more. The only thing that I didn't like was the cucumber salad. On the menu pictures they show a thinly slice cucumber, which is what I thought we were getting. The vinegar was too over powering and honestly I couldn't even finish one slice of cucumber. I did tell a young lady that this isn't exactly what the picture showed and she said that "it would be hard to cut it thinly". Typically, when there's an issue w food at other restaurants they'll comp it and you move on. This place didn't do that, so I was bummed. Note to the chef/cook: Garlic Spicy Edamame- please do not mesh the garlic, it leaves a bitter taste and aesthetic becomes too un-appealing. Dice them, with small amount of butter and olive oil, and chili oil, soy sauce, then mix with cooked edamame as a last step. Do not over cook edamame, 5 minutes in boiling water will do just fine. Note to sushi chef: Even if not very busy, preheat the sushi oven at all time. Unagi must be fully roasted to perfect the texture. If mushy and undercooked, bones will be felt while chewing, and leave in-appealing texture and visual. Miso soup: when not busy, lower the temperature down in the soup pot. Too salty for people who are coming in around less busy time. I would rather get charged for the miso soup and get a better, less salty one. Salmon Skin: Do not shred salmon skin. It's always about texture. Salmon skin loses its crispy-ness when shredded. Service was alright, but I saw a kitchen staff walking slowly toward the kitchen after his break time with dirty apron while the customers were eating inside. Use the back door and be discreet. Nigiri pricing is too expensive compared to other places , and looking at the quality of food, customers will know the quality and pricing won't match among the many sushi joints around the area. The owner really must take care of this place - I see potential and has great atmosphere but employees also must be serious about food and sushi. read more
