Note to the chef/cook: Garlic Spicy Edamame- please do not mesh the garlic, it leaves a bitter taste and aesthetic becomes too un-appealing. Dice them, with small amount of butter and olive oil, and chili oil, soy sauce, then mix with cooked edamame as a last step. Do not over cook edamame, 5 minutes in boiling water will do just fine. Note to sushi chef: Even if not very busy, preheat the sushi oven at all time. Unagi must be fully roasted to perfect the texture. If mushy and undercooked, bones will be felt while chewing, and leave in-appealing texture and visual. Miso soup: when not busy, lower the temperature down in the soup pot. Too salty for people who are coming in around less busy time. I would rather get charged for the miso soup and get a better, less salty one. Salmon Skin: Do not shred salmon skin. It's always about texture. Salmon skin loses its crispy-ness when shredded. Service was alright, but I saw a kitchen staff walking slowly toward the kitchen after his break time with dirty apron while the customers were eating inside. Use the back door and be discreet. Nigiri pricing is too expensive compared to other places , and looking at the quality of food, customers will know the quality and pricing won't match among the many sushi joints around the area. Very good lunch today at Mainichi Sushi. The "Shrimp Lollipops" is a great deal - I thought they'd be like Tempura, but rather deep fried with bread crumbs - however, all shrimp and delicious. First review I've written in a long time! Came here on a Saturday night. My husband called to make a reservation but it was at 20% capacity when we arrived at 6:30 so wasn't really needed. It did fill up around 7:30 though. We ordered a ton of food. Standouts were their fresh fish of the day: uni, toro, and kanpachi. They served these right after the appetizer but I think they should have served these last because they were sooo rich that the rest of the meal tasted kind of bland afterwards. Hamachi collar was also amazing. We ordered three rolls but none stood out. We were super excited about their miso soup since it was chilly out but it was either too watered down or not enough salt because it tasted like nothing. We added soy sauce to it. Restaurant itself is huge and I loved the modern decor. Complimentary hot tea, miso soup, and sliced orange for dessert. There was only one waitress working super hard and she was really sweet. Prices here are great, parking is slightly difficult due to it being on the very popular Solano but it's fun to walk around if you end up parking a little far like we did. read more

I enjoyed my lunch, which included some raw tuna, but I got deathly ill that evening so I can't wholeheartedly recommend this joint.

So, I have eaten all sorts of sushi and understand there are different levels and types. This is probably the WORST sushi I have ever had. I got the gold river, crazy horse, sashimi, and ninja two. And every single item was awful. The rice was not fully cooked. The sashimi was still partially frozen. The tempura was not crispy and the texture was old and stale. I mean, nothing was good. I would never come back here and I didn't finish anything and didn't even Ben want to eat it. It was such a waste of money. Pass. Kyoto sushi is a grab and go of pre made items and it's literally better than this place and their stuff is premade and out all day. Nori roll is an affordable place with similar pricing and they are a million times yummier. Try that instead. read more

The sushi is not bad and the fish is pretty good and fresh. The only downside to the sushi is that the rice which is 75% of the sushi. Ordered a couple of nigiri and while I enjoyed the fish part (I got salmon, hamachi, amaebi, scallop, aji, and ika), the rice ball is unfortunately way too overstuffed, cold, and hard. If only the rice is warmer, softer, and more airy, it would have tasted much better and probably bring up the rating to a 4.5. Please improve on the rice to be more enjoyable. read more

Note: I understand that restaurants are facing unprecedented challenges due to the pandemic, and that celebratory national holidays are always stressful for restaurant management and staff. I know this is particularly true when two holidays fall on the same day, as they did yesterday. Nonetheless, businesses have had a couple of years now to adjust to the realities of the pandemic, and holiday weekend pressure on restaurants is entirely predictable. I want to emphasize that I do not fault the server for any of the failures I am about to detail. -------------------------------- My wife, daughter, and I made a 6:30 p.m. dinner reservation on Father's Day/Juneteenth at Mainichi Sushi on Solano. We arrived on time and were seated within a reasonable 5 minutes. At that moment, ours was one of two empty tables. We noticed upon sitting that our table had not been cleaned, but waited patiently for the bus person to clean it. Instead, she arrived with dishes and silverware and proceeded to set them up on top of the clearly evident crumbs, debris, and food spills from the previous party. When we commented on this, the busser apologized and returned a couple of minutes later to clean and reset the table. Our server then poured our tea. I asked what kind of tea it was, and she replied "Black tea, I think." When she had gone, my daughter (who works in the restaurant industry) quietly told me it was not black tea, but genmai cha. Customers typically ask questions like this because of food sensitivities (I did not), and a customer who is allergic to rice (a key ingredient in genmai cha) could potentially suffer serious consequences from consuming rice tea they had been told was black tea. About five minutes later, a server took our orders. Our daughter's order arrived first -- possibly because chirashi is easy to prepare in advance. My daughter politely waited for my order and my wife's to arrive -- but they did not. (It was now after 7:00 , and the restaurant had emptied out a bit. There were 2-3 empty tables which remained empty for the remainder of our meal.) As other tables continued to be served (including several that had arrived after us), we sat staring at my daughter's food and making Father's Day conversation. I eventually commented to the server that we had now been waiting for 50 minutes, and could she please try to expedite our order. (I understand that some orders take longer to prepare, but why not bring out all the orders at once, regardless? Why make the entire table stare at one person's meal for nearly an hour?) The server gave a perfunctory apology and said she would do her best, explaining that the kitchen was "slammed" with DoorDash orders. (And indeed, as we waited in vain for our food, there was a constant flow of waitstaff bringing DoorDash bags to the pickup table and of DoorDash couriers picking them up.) After five more minutes, the server returned to tell us without apology that the kitchen had RUN OUT OF WHITE RICE (this is a Japanese restaurant!), and that my wife would have to make do with either salad or sushi rice in her bento box. (It had now been about an hour since we ordered, and only now had they realized this.) My wife said sushi rice would be fine, and the server warned her that we would be CHARGED AN EXTRA DOLLAR FOR THE SUBSTITUTION. Shocked, we politely asked whether they could waive the dollar -- seeing that the substitution was not our choice, and in light of the multiple challenges we had already faced -- and the server replied "I don't think we can do that, no." The two missing orders arrived a few minutes later -- WELL OVER AN HOUR AFTER WE HAD ORDERED. Happily, the bento box included what must have been the very last of the white rice -- but none of us got the miso soup that should have been included with all three orders. We waited patiently for it, but it never arrived. After about ten more minutes I eventually called the server over to ask for it. We finished our meal, I paid in cash, and we left. (Despite the disgraceful service experience, I left a 20% tip, as virtually none of this outrage was the fault of the server.) read more

The fish is fresh, and their prices are way more affordable than any other high quality sushi place I've been to in the East bay. I don't even like Kansai nearly as much as I like Mainichi. So well past when it was supposed to be ready, we go in and holler at them, "oh we're just starting to make your sushi, we ran out of rice." So it's now an hour after ordering, and they haven't even started for a $100 order? Ok, this ain't our go to spot, we were trying them again after a few years in hopes it got better. It didn't. Now the icing on the cake, we can't wait, cancel the order. They say their systems are down and they'd call to refund. Forget that noise, we insisted they square up immediately. Mainichi is our go-to Japanese restaurant in Albany and it's a solid restaurant if you're looking for good Japanese food and rolls. Their lunch bento special gives you many options to choose from and a great option for take out on a weekday. Their special rolls are fresh and delicious- the rainbow roll and dragon roll are my favorite. We dined in for dinner recently and service was nice and quick. The sushi chef told us since we came so close to closing, some food selection wouldn't be an option. (Not the end of the world) the food was really good and the conversation was great as well.
