My daughter & I have only indulged in the plant based items such as miso soup, chilli/garlic edamame (FAVE), Avocado maki, and Veggie tempura. Every single item was extremely fresh and presented well. The comp warm green tea & sweet orange slices for dessert are sweet offerings which will keep us coming back. Service was EXTREMELY slow and it took very long to even receive our appetizers. We were never updated and I had to pull our waitress to ask about our food. However, the food had great taste and made up for the fact we waited so long. I'm willing to give this place a a second chance to see if their service can improve. Finally a cool authentic sushi place on Solano. Came here for dinner with my family and we all enjoyed so much with the food and the atmosphere. Everything was fresh and delicious. We ended up eat so much and not feeling guilty afterwards. My favorite was the ocean salad and my way roll (the jalapeño gives it a little bit of kick) which is perfect. I have tried many sushi restaurants in the area, and Mainich is by far the best. The food is impeccably fresh, there's a nice assortment of dishes and their bento box is great. The restaurant space is very clean and comfortable. The miso soup greets you when you come. A real standout is the chili garlic stir fry edamame. Every roll I've had is large and flavorful. The prices are very reasonable. I have returned here many times and bring my friends. Service can be a bit slow sometimes but I don't mind. Very nice place. read more

Amazing food! It was my first time being in Berkeley. I got my tattoo near there and had time to kill. My friend and I tried this restaurant. The hand rolls are amazing! So we're the sushi but the miso soup were a little salty for my liking. The oranges was the cherry on the top. It was so sweet and delicious. Not only that, the place also looked wonderful and clean. I don't usually write reviews and even more rarely negative ones but my experience here tonight was just bad. I was with 3 other people and after they'd had their food for quite some time, I had to finally ask when mine coming only to find out it wasn't. No apology for that just "what did you order?" (Shrimp tempura). Then there was a good 15 minute wait after that before it finally arrived and it was the worst shrimp tempura I've ever had. The batter was heavy and tasteless and somehow the shrimp itself was tasteless as well. It wasn't comp'd, no apology or explanation of any kind was offered. I know accidents happen, things get forgotten but any halfway decent place would make sure you knew they were sorry, and expedite the dish and often comp you for it. All I got was a shrug and a very long wait for some mediocre at best food. The people I was eating with said their food was ok so Im giving the place two stars instead of one although I sure wouldn't ever go back there. read more

We used to love Sushi29...it was our family's go-to Sushi spot in the neighborhood. When it closed, we were bummed finally decided to try the new place in the same spot. First of all, perhaps our standards are too high...love Kirala, love Roku in Santa Monica, love Hama in Venice, CA...AND...perhaps we just hit this place on a "down" day but hands-down one of the worst Sushi experiences we've had. First of all the smell of cleanser permeated the entire restaurant to a point of distraction but we were hopeful the food would make up for it...this is the Bay Area, for goodness' sake and fresh, amazing seafood/sushi is plentiful. We ordered the mixed tempura appetizer (vegetables and shrimp). We should have known when it arrived glazed in a deep friend brownness that one would expect from a fast-food burger joint. It was inedible to us and we left it after trying a couple of bites. Then we had a "real" california roll, a "Berkeley" roll, a rainbow roll, unagi and ikura. The "real" california roll did not live up to REAL CRAB but was what one would expect from shopping mall california roll. Decent but nothing delicious or even special. The Berkeley roll...which was fried yam and vegetable had the same deep-friend batter from the tempura which made it virtually unappetizing. The biggest disappointment was the unagi and ikura. Both items tasted sub-par and downright NOT fresh. Such a waste of a sushi meal "out". There was one wait person who didn't ask us for water (which we soon wanted and couldn't get because she had left and we didn't want to "bother" the chef behind the counter for it). Before she left, however, she brought us a wrong item, then, we had to wait a long time before the unagi and ikura came out. We thought they had forgotten and had already finished our rolls. Then, just as we were about to ask about it, the wait person left the restaurant. Gone. A good 10mins later the chef brought out the sushi. So, unfortunately, I cannot even contribute a comment of "decent" service. I hope that they get their ducks in a row and raise the level of what is expected in a sushi establishment in the Bay Area. It could be such a wonderful neighborhood spot but until I hear/read otherwise, we will not be returning. read more

I just moved to Nothern California from Socal, and was looking for a good Sushi joint. We had a bunch of good sushi joints in Southern Cal, and I wanted to find one here. My new sweetheart Debra and I had dinner plans, so I decided to pop the question, "Do you like Sushi?" she quickly said "yes I do". I then asked if she had a place in mind. She said I like this place in Berkeley. Mainichi ... We were off .. When we arrived at Mainichi we had the pleasure of meeting Tony (he owned the place) and the crew made us feel right at home. We started with a couple of large beers, good start to a great evening. After we introduced ourselves, Tony started making things that were on and off the menu. We shared this crazy good "Ocean Salad", over the top..(its a must have). Tony served a mix of salmon, eel, tuna, soft shell crab and it was all excellent. Everything was so good, from start to finish. Not only did he make great sushi, he answered questions about the restaurant, and his personal story and how he made his dream a reality. (very interesting young man). When it was time to go, we were full, happy and excited about the next time we would meet again. I would like to preface by sharing that I do not eat raw fish. With that being said, I recently tried Mainichi and really liked their cucumber and crunch gobo rolls. Although those are both pretty basic rolls, they were both super yummy and my friend who eats raw fish was a big fan of their orange blossom roll! I would definitely recommend trying! read more

Amazingly fresh, melt in your mouth fish in an amiable neighborhood atmosphere. We gave Tony the reins and he did not steer us wrong. We started with gorgeous kimomoto oysters, followed by hamachi carpaccio. Everything was so delicious it didn't even occur to me to take pictures, but the presentation was attractive and sophisticated. Tony then served us a nigiri platter and a Pink Lady Roll all of which was delicious. The meal was enhanced by Tony's congenial attitude and willingness to put food in front of us not knowing how it would be received. That courage and confidence in his sushi speaks volumes. This place is absolutely amazing! I enjoy sushi a lot and decided to go here with my boyfriend who I am visiting because the pictures looked good. I was not disappointed at all! Everything from the miso soup to the garlic edamame to the nigiri to the sashimi and to the sushi was delicious and fresh. Staff was also very kind and attentive, one of the sushi chefs even offered to pay for mochi for the elderly gentlemen sitting behind us. Wonderful people work here. The atmosphere and decoration are also very welcoming and comforting. Love this restaurant. Every meal has been good. In addition to good sushi, the chicken or salmon teriyaki bento boxes are consistent and good. Last nite I ordered both a chicken and salmon bento box and was very disappointed. Whatever it was, it was not teriyaki, and was mixed with lots of onions and vegetables. Also there was only the entree, a scoop of rice and some salad. I'll order the bento box in restaurant, but never again for take-out. read more

I was not impressed with their food. The maki sushi looked like it had been slapped together in a hurry (rice falling out, cut raggedly; the fish itself was ok) and the agedashi tofu is the real reason they only get two stars. Agedashi tofu is one of my absolute favorite things and this one was not it: it was overly starchy, a bit too greasy, and they used firm tofu instead of soft, which is sacrilegious in my book. Maybe we'll try the sushi in person again to see if it's better (we ordered takeout) but never again with that tofu! read more

Got take out for the family for $80 with tax and tip. Kids and mom shared cheaper rolls while dad had sashimi. We all filled up with and yakisoba. The California roll (with initiation crab) was of notably higher quality than some of the cheaper places I go - Kids loved it. Sashimi was very high quality. The seafood yakisoba was excellent with octopus, mussels and scallops - but no fish. Will definitely go back! Only complaint is I wished the containers were compost Ake ir recyclable. Our food came in the plastic clamshells that have a recycle symbol but actually not recyclable in Berkeley or Albany. I guess we will have to eat in next time. read more

The search for our favorite sushi restaurant is officially complete! Mainichi stole our hearts with their delicious complimentary miso soup, fresh fish and amazing staff. This was our second time here and it was consistently incredible. The mixto special comes with a generous combo of sashimi, nigiri and a rainbow roll. We also got the A's roll because we are fatties and no regrets. The fish melts in your mouth with every perfect bite. The staff is super friendly and welcoming especially Julia! Wow. Was enticed into Mainichi by the solid reviews but was so underwhelmed. The garlic edamame was way over cooked and mushy. Even though we clearly requested Omakase selections from the chef we were offered a very ordinary, boring selection. Shared a few rolls. Only real flavor was from the overly drizzled toppings. Place appeared good. Beautiful atmosphere and appeared clean. However, my boyfriend and I have had food poisoning since we left the establishment. It was our only meal on this day and couldn't attribute our stomach upset and symptoms to anything else. The only thing we ate in common on this day was food from this restaurant. We are not allergic to seafood or ever had any issues with shellfish or any of the ingredients we consumed. We enjoy sushi very much and wanted to give this local place a try unfortunately it's not worth the stomach upset. For the tab price ($120 for 2), I really wish I would've chosen another place.
