Carne asada tacos

Ambiance is beautiful. Looks like it should be located on a beach . Love the vibes. Dog friendly 100%. Location easily accessible with street and lot parking . Staff friendly and accommodating . A little on the pricey side for what the food is . Paying more for the atmosphere. FYI bathrooms are all genders which my 72 year old mom had a huge problem with . And the fish tacos were spicy FYI .

Food - ordered the fish taco, caldo tlalpeno and guiso and for drinks, got horchata and beer. Service - super fast! Server came super fast after seating us, we ordered and food came within 15 minutes. Ambiance - cute spot, lots of outdoor seating, dog friendly Overall food was good. I wish the fish tacos came in flour tortilla but the horchata was AMAZING. The caldo tlapeno was also super flavorful. Only thing about the guiso was the cheese wasn't as melted as we preferred. They have a destined private parking lot that costs $5.

I really dig the colorful outdoorsy vibes here. I'm not usually a margarita fan but they had one with mezcal that was pretty nice. I came here specifically for the fish tacos. Super crispy batter, flaky fish, and chewy homemade tortilla. I was pretty happy with them. The rice and beans needed a bit more seasoning but otherwise decent.

Even the bathrooms are cute

As great as ever. The decor has even improved since our last visit which was over a year ago. Service was great. Kitchen was slow, tho' , cuz it is a Saturday night, with two group events in the side yard. It's a unique and fun place.

I went to Nido's to host our welcome party for our wedding guests, who were flying in from NJ. WOW- all of our guests had so much fun and were raving about the food and drinks! I was allowed to use my own playlist for music, and we rented out the plaza area! It was so beautiful and fun- they even decorated with some flowers in vases. The server was so kind and outstanding. I will definitely be back!

Nido's Backyard doesn't take a backseat to any restaurant. This place is legitimately great. And it takes advantage of Oakland frequent sunshine. They do have a few space heaters for the not so warm days. I love the Baja fish tacos here, pretty much all the tacos. Although, since I'm not a fan of brussels sprouts, I never get the vegetable taco. The Carnitas, Chicken and Carne Asada are all delicious. Margaritas And Mezcalitas are pretty special here. Good house too - Cimarron tequila. The bartenders know what they're doing. And the servers always bring good vibes along with your food. FYI, it's all outdoors. Some of the area is covered and they have a lot of heaters. Great place to have an event too. They have a few options to set up a private area for you. Don't even think about leaving something visible in your car or even in the trunk. Even if there's something hidden, if it's in your car and of value, use their secure parking lot. Follow the signs.

I went to Nido's backyard Saturday, March 28 with my wife and my son and I got it to go order for my daughter. My wife had this fish tacos. They're made with rock fish and she will enjoy them. You could have them the way you like them and you get two with an order she also had a Mojito, which was so so when we got there, it was happy hour so the chips sauce and guacamole that we ordered were on the happy hour menu and they were pretty reasonable. Abigail was our server. She was pretty busy so not only did I have to get up and go to the front to get the email. I mean that the Wi-Fi password I also have to get up to go get my own to go box. This was a nice place. It's like a backyard setting and I'd recommend it. I go again as well, my son had the chicken tacos. He actually wanted the steak tacos, but he likes them plain and the steak tacos are made with onions mixed in with the meat and the chicken or not so he had the chicken tacos and he enjoyed them myself I had the mole enchiladas and they were good. I can't eat that much so I took them to go one of them and I also enjoyed the chips and salsa and guacamole with the exception of my server being very busy I highly recommended if you're not in a hurry and if you want a good meal with a great ambience, I made my reservation on Rezy! When I got there, they led me to a nice table and gave me an option of several different tables and it was quite cool and I saw some people that I recognize there. I'd recommend them to you if you wanna go and I'd go there again and they have a sister or brother Restaurant right around the corner just called Odin's the name spelled backwards.

Nido's Backyard has done it again. I came here on a Sunday afternoon with a friend for lunch and we had a great time, especially with the beautiful weather. Staff and Service: - Our waitress was great and very helpful - Staff at the check-in counter were disinfecting the menus. While we are not in the prime of Covid, I always appreciate cleanliness and this was comforting to see Food and Drinks: - Margarita Mocktail: they have a non-alcoholic margarita in a can, which was fun - Agua Fresca: we learned that they don't like to waste ingredients, so they go through various agua Fresca flavors in one day. This is so smart and friendly to the planet. When we went, the flavor was watermelon, mint, and pineapple - refreshing! - Media Quesabirria: we shared this, which was a good call. It was delicious, flavorful, and very filling. Comes with consome, hot sauce, and sour cream - Ensalada Picada: this was much better than I thought it would be. The persimmon slices were a fun addition and the whole salad was delicious Miscellaneous: - They validate parking if you use the legates security lot across the street - Gender-neutral bathrooms available - Plenty of outdoor seating for all group sizes

Went to NIDO's with the family on the weekend. They have a large outdoor (only) seating area but the weather was nice and sunny so it was perfect. Loved the vibe too as they were playing 90's hip hop (the golden age)! We started with chips with generous heaps of salsa and guacamole! We had a group of 8 and half of us ordered the quesabirria! And it did not disappoint! 3 giant loaded slices filled with succulent braised beef, gooey cheese and a nice bowl of hot consommé for dipping. I could only scarf down two slices but was thankful to keep the last slice for dinner at home. NIDO's is a vibe!!

Nido's backyard reminds me of hanging out at your cool tia's backyard. Drinks are flowing, food is top notch, and I'm always dancing in my chair to the tunes. Parking is $5 across the street with monitored security or free street parking. Pay at Nido's before you leave or you'll be walking back. The service is wonderful. We are somehow seated even though it's busy. Honestly, we usually sit at the bar to avoid waiting. I will not let time get in the way of me and guacamole! I love to explore their house-made salsas. My new favorite is the salsa de macha. I ordered guac and chips, veggie tacos, and my ultimate seasonal favorite...quesadilla de calabacitas y flor de calabaza. It's not autumn unless I get one of these. This quesadilla is not like the others. There's something beautiful about eating delicate flowers. The petals just melt in your mouth. Get fancy and give this a try. Another favorite is the coconut horchata....I can never have enough. For my lactose-free and vegan besties, this one is for you!

Stopped by Nido's on a visit to the Bay to see family. This place wasn't around when I was growing up in the Bay Area so my brother was excited to take me. I love the use of the space with lots of hybrid indoor/outdoor space. You can get both vibes here. They had a DJ outside and more family style dining inside. Lots of large parties on a Sunday afternoon. Our server was great and the food and drinks came fairly quickly. We shared the steak tacos and queso which were ok. We enjoyed our cocktails much more. Overall, beautiful space. The food was fine. Drinks were divine and the vibes were there. I'd definitely revisit.

Agua fresca and quesabirria with consomé
Valeria O.

My family and I came on a Saturday afternoon with no reservation and we were able to be seated right away. I ordered the quesabirria with consomé and it was delicious! The cheese to meat ratio was perfect. I paired it with their agua fresca of the day, which was a pepino/limón flavor and it was very refreshing. Our service was good and the ambiance was pleasant! The only downside is that parking can be a little tricky because of the location, but aside from street parking, there is a lot across the street that you can pay to park at.

This is a great spot if you want to enjoy drinks and food with a friend or a large party, they have plenty of outdoor seating and space to spread out. The sangria is my favorite! The food is okay, I had higher hopes for the queso. The service is always good as well. They have a really good tequila section too! Definitely a place to check out if in Oakland.

NIDO's BackYard Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - NIDO's BackYard

Outdoor seating include dog friendly?

Yes! Fully "outside" so dogs can enjoy all over!

Does the paid parking have security?

Yes, there’s a security kiosk when you drive up where you get your parking pass, though I’ve been there once when the kiosk was unattended (maybe they needed a bathroom break?)

Do they offer high chairs for babies?

Yes, we do!

If I come with a group of 10, would separate checks be allowed? I'm asking folks to meet me for happy hour but not paying for everyone.

You can order through QR code. So, yes, you can

Are reservations required or available?

Reservations are available but not required. If you're going at a busy time it is good to have them for prime seating but there is usually some seating available.

I see that dogs are allowed in the front area. Are dogs allowed in the main restaurant area?

Yes, they are allowed as long as they're on a leash and well behaved

Gluten free options?

Yes, yes, yes! They have many. I've been gluten free for years and I appreciated their offerings. They had lots of corn masa based offerings, so it should be relatively easy to find something. Good luck!

How loud are the trains when they pass by the restaurant? In other parts of Jack London Square the trains were super loud, probably due to heavier pedestrian traffic. We like to bring our dog with us to restaurants. She is frightened by loud noise.

Was there for 2 hrs on a weekday at midday and heard no trains or any loud noises. But if there were trains, they'd be right there running through the place!!

Do you have to have a vaccination card?

They did not ask for ours when we went

Do you have to have a reservation?

No, you don't, but just like any hot spot in Oakland, it's a good idea to have one.

What are the happy hour times?

They unfortunately do not have happy hour

It seems that everyone is parking in the illegal parking lot or in the bike lane and are getting tickets. Where do you suggest that we park?

I parked in the small lot across the street with no issues. The street parking had soooo much broken glass, so definitely keep your seats down and have no valuables in your car

What's the difference between a patio table and garden patio for the reservations?

The garden is at the front of near the entrance. There are larger tables to the right and smaller cocktail tables to the left. The patio tables are inside another area further down and are generally larger tables. No difference in food options from… Read more

Great to see this place has wifi. I need a quiet place with wifi to work remotely. Does this place play loud music in the outdoor seating area? many restaurants even with outdoor dining have very loud music which makes it hard to work/take calls.

During the weekend the music was loud enough that it would probably be heard on the phone.

Are there outdoor TVs?

Yes

Is this place 21+?

There's a sign outside that says all children must be accompanied by adults, so family friendly!

Are dogs allowed?

Judging from the dog others at my table brought the answer is yes!

When will you be open for business?

"Preview" nights started September 6 5-9 and same hours September 7. Waitress said same next weekend 9/13 and 9/14 and open daily or so starting the weekend after that. You can follow them on Instagram @nidosbackyard for updates.

It's a longtime local favorite of mine and my go-to spot for meeting up with friends--equal parts escape and comfort. The cocktail menu is impressively deep, full of beautifully crafted, fancy tiki drinks that practically beg to be explored, and so far every single one I've tried has been delicious (dangerously so). Inside, the bar nails the classic tiki vibe--warm, immersive, and transportive--while the outdoor patio offers a lovely, relaxed option with plenty of extra seating on warm days. It's the kind of place where you can linger, laugh, and lose track of time. The staff deserve a special shout-out: genuinely friendly, attentive, and accommodating, which only adds to the overall experience. A quick pro tip: if you're planning to stop by during popular after-work hours, definitely make a reservation--it fills up for good reason. The food menu is on the smaller side, but the bites are tasty and thoughtfully done, perfect for sharing alongside a round (or two) of cocktails. Its rare I see these on the menu so I had to try. It was strong and delicious! So happy with my choice. For food, I had so much meat. The lamb chops to start were incredible. This was served with a little mozzarella + tomato salad with all of the balsamic glaze. Super yummy and perfectly medium rare. Next time, I can just have this on its own. Definitely a star. Next, I had the duck breast which sat on a bed of spinach risotto. Very delicious and also cooked perfectly. Being Taylor, I had to finish out the dinner with another cocktail (lemon drop) that was great and finally I had a little glass of port as my dessert. All in al a great little dinner at Alley & Vine. I will state the obvious, these are just about the two most expensive dishes on the menu, but man, they had heaps of seafood and were absolutely delicious! When I say heaps, I mean the shrimp and scallops were giant, there were mussels and clams and crab meat. 100% worth it! We finished the meal with the tiramisu and that was ok. Also a big plus is their meat-to-bun ratio so you get a nice bite of burger with the sturdy yet soft bun. The Louie Louie looked amazing. My 2 friends ordered that and devoured.
