Nido's Backyard is an office favorite that offers tasty food with amazing cocktails! We came here for a team outing and all really enjoyed the food and beautiful ambiance. Since then, we returned for a teammate's going away meal and once again had a great time! I tried the tacos there and on another visit shared the queso and chips with guacamole and salsa. Everyone loves the food there! The staff is very welcoming and the service is exceptional. We had a large group once and our server was patient and friendly to get all our last minute happy hour orders. The cocktails are very good, I tried the Guava Tequila cocktail that was just amazing. The fresh guava juice really took this drink to a whole new level. They offer an extensive tequila and mezcal menu alike. They recently started offering security surveillance private parking lot options like a block away. You will really enjoy the food, drinks and great energy at this restaurant. Came here for the first time on 7/19 around 2 pm for the hype. The host was friendly, our server was not so much. The ambiance was fun and festive, and the cocktails were good, but the food was overpriced and just bad. We ordered 2 appetizers: chips & guacamole and the fish ceviche. The chips were stale and cold, and the ceviche tasted fishy (a sign that the seafood is not fresh). Overall, we were billed over $70 for the 2 cocktails and 2 appetizers. People keep recommending Limón for good latin food, so I'm sad I didn't listen. Oh well, live and learn. read more

I really enjoyed this place but keep in mind they get really busy. I suggest you calling ahead of time and make a reservation. The perfect place on a nice sunny day. All of their drinks are delicious as well as our appetizers. It is an outdoor restaurant so keep that in mind. They do have an "inside" and "outside" area. You need a reservation for the inside area in the outside areas first come first serve. However, keep in mind that the outside area doesn't have any waiters you have to go to the bar and put your order in. There is a parking across the street that it's only five dollars, worth parking there as street parking can be hard to find and it looks like cars get broken into. read more

Came here for dinner - it's a very cute outdoor seating place! Excellent vibe for hanging out. I ordered Tres Rojas (mezcal + citrus liquer + tempranillo-hibiscus-pomegranate syrup + lime). I thought the syrup was not very noticeable - the mezcal and citrus were very overpowering. We also got sides of chips + guac and queso. The guac was delicious. The queso was a bit grainy and not very smooth - I would recommend sticking to the guac + salsa instead. The papas pasadas were incredible - would highly recommend everyone trying this. I got the enchiladas coloradas de patos and it was very good. The mole tasted excellent and the duck was well cooked. The serving size was pretty large - it's definitely enough for a regular meal. All our waiters were very friendly, helpful and patient. Overall, we all had an excellent experience here and would recommend to people who are in the area. read more

Ambiance 10/10 - the fact that 21 people sat outside in the middle of a torrential downpour and were comfortable and happy celebrating my friend's birthday says enough! Plenty of propane heaters, overhead heaters as well, and a big enclosed area for more intimate gatherings. Food & drinks 4/10 - unfortunately, the fish tacos and quesadillas were lacking in flavor, but the queso did make up for it! It would be perfect if they offered that as a plate of nachos to order! I had been wanting to check out Nido's backyard after seeing it on social media so I went for a date night. They have a huge dining area, mostly outdoors with super cute decorations and bright colors. We got seated immediately, without a reservation. Our server was nice but with the size of the dining area it was sometimes a bit of a challenge to get his attention. Not a problem for us though, just something to keep in mind if you are looking to get in and out quickly. The drinks were good, my boyfriend got a Mezcal slushie and I got a Paloma. They were pretty strong but pretty pricey. The food was average. Nothing to write home about, but nothing really wrong with it either. Everything lacked flavor, even the eloté which was covered in tajin and lime juice was kind of meh. It was not what I expected when eating out at a Mexican place. The fish tacos were fine, the salsa they use has a bit of a kick to it but it did really help with the flavor. The tostada was very bland, it didn't seem like they used salt even. Overall, it is a fun place with a great atmosphere but I don't think I'd pick it as a dinner option in general. I think you can get better Mexican food at a lower price in a bunch of places around Oakland so for now, it's off my short list. read more

This is a decent place to go and hang out with large groups of people. I came here on a weekend night to hang out with some friends and the place was pretty empty. They have a ton of big tables to accommodate bigger parties, which was really convenient. However, the food and drinks are nothing special, more mediocre than anything. My party and I ordered a bunch of their different dishes and we weren't particularly impressed by any of them. The dishes themselves were pretty small, but on the pricier side of things. I got the flautas which were crispy however, the protein inside was very minimal. The drinks are also not super impressive. They have all your classic drinks and a couple of other on tap drinks. My friends and I didn't really like the drinks that came with their mezcal because it had a weird flavor and we also ordered two of the same drinks that came out looking and tasting completely different which is really odd. Customer service was decent, kept their eye on us at the beginning, however they were harder to flag down after we got our food. Overall, this is not a place I would come back for for its food specifically, but definitely a place. I would suggest to hang out with a large group of people. The parking situation is a little bit sketchy because it's Oakland. They have a couple of street parking spots which you can probably snag if you don't go during peak hours. However, they also have a "secure lot" that you can costs $5 which is guarded by a guy however he was not paying any attention when I drove in and out, so I'm not sure how secure it really is. read more

Checked out this spot for brunch yesterday. Ordered the pancakes to share and had the mushroom tamal with a side of their fish taco! It's one of the best fish tacos I've ever had and this is coming from someone who've lived in Southern California. I am happy to find a place that serves it the way I like it. The fish was fried and crispy. The serving was perfect! The tres leche and flan were delicious. I liked how they made the michelada and gave me the can of Modelo on the side. This place is magical and loved the ambiance. Our server was amazing and personable. Parking is available across the street and you'll have to get your ticket validated. Planned a 28-person work lunch at NIDO's and it was amazing. From a logistics standpoint, they are incredibly easy to work with, and our event coordinator Jenny was always quick to respond via email or phone. Price was clear and the menu planning portal was easy to use. On the day of the event our team raved about the decor and vibe and LOVED the food. Location- sadly that area is deceptively sketchy. My car got broken into time before last in the middle of the day on the street, and now they have a monitored lot (thank you) but that attendant is not gonna deter a lot of crime and you have to walk across that dangerous street where people drive like maniacs. I've wanted to try this spot out for a while and when the opportunity came up to pick a spot for a group of 4 of us all over the Bay, we decided on NIDO's. I BARTed in from the city and it's about an 8 minute walk from the Lake Merritt station. Straight shot, all flat. I have a reservation so I waited to check in with someone but otherwise it's a seat yourself spot. It's much bigger than I thought so there is a ton of space and different areas to sit. I grabbed a spot near the back by some shade and under an umbrella since it was a sunny afternoon. I was the first to arrive from my group and our server did a great job of checking in with me and got me a drink while I waited. They were able to accommodate our group of 2 carnivores, 1 vegan and 1 vegetarian, which was great, and everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. I got the burrito with chicken and thought it was good. If I'd finished it all there, I would have asked for a cup of their red salsa as I preferred that to their green, but that's a personal preference. It looks like they have music and comedy some nights and I can definitely see how this is a great spot to grab drinks and/or food with a group after work or on the weekends. Been wanting to go to this place for awhile, it is an authentic Mexican restaurant, but it is a bit different than other Mexican places. They have mezcal and a number of other cocktails, I ate a corunda, something hard to find anywhere outside the Michoacan region in Mexico. That was delicious. The obvious, ideal choice for brunch with friends on a sunny day. We were able to book a reservation for 6 people at 11.15 am the morning of. It seems like there is a ton of space to try a walk-up anyways. The drinks are great and average price, and music was fun without drowning out our conversation. I don't think the food is anything to write home about, but I appreciate the unique takes on Mexican standards. I was excited for the (oof pricey $26) duck enchiladas, but the mole it was drowned in was too sweet. My friend's carnitas were dry, but everything else was solid. Our server was friendly and accommodating about splitting the bill. I only wish the food came out a bit faster. I think we waited about 25 minutes after our order and the rest of the place wasn't particularly busy yet, and then the dessert for my friend's Oakland Restaurant Week menu came out fifteen minutes after we were all done eating - and after the check too, so it seems like they forgot. read more

Nido's is a hidden gem wide out in the open! After having just returned from a family function in Guadalajara we were looking for something similar to the outstanding restaurants they have down there to celebrate my son's birthday. Nido's fit the bill to the tee. Great ambiance, great taste and the quality of the food was top notch. Add to that the outstanding service (special shout out to Craig!) and it truly is one of the best Mexican food restaurants in the Bay Area. The prices definitely are a little higher than what we would pay in Guadalajara lol, but we found them very fair for here, especially given the amount of meat in the dishes we ordered. We came here on a weekday evening with a group of us. They had our table ready, reserved for 515 pm, and everyone trickled in after that. The place was very busy for a weeknight, with the biggest back area pretty full (though other parts of the venue was closed off). It was a pretty loud venue with loud music and much chatter so at times it could be hard to hear. There were also outside heaters, which could be nice on cold days but it felt a little warm for that evening. They were pretty good at checking in on our table and making sure everyone had their drinks throughout the night. However, it took awhile to get our food orders in and get our food. When we finally got our food, my chicken tostada was dry and lacked flavor, but my fish taco was pretty good. The appetizers we had (chips and guac and chips and cheese) was also pretty good, but sort of on the smaller side. I would come back to try other items on their menu, but I think they should rename some items like their beans - they aren't just pinto beans, but they look like refried beans so they should name it accordingly. read more

My son and his wife hosted their wedding reception here. I am giving it 3 stars for the parking which was not easy, 4 for the brunch food, 5 for the vibe and decoration, 4 .5 for the service of the staff. Very cool vibe and decoration of the entire place with tons of cactus and other traditional Mexican decor. The spot they had reserved for our event was out of the main hustle and bustle of the main dining area which was filled and very busy on a Saturday afternoon. The cover patio and all the heaters throughout the venue where great. The bar was set up and the breakfast brunch was efficiently served and organized. The chilaquiles and the sangría were very good. Everyone enjoyed the food, drinks, and service. The venue, decor, and vibe really rounded out a beautiful day and made the celebration memorable, intimate , making this an amazing space for any special event. We will come back and try the dining room next time we are in Oakland. Only annoyance is the Amtrak track which is literally in the other side of the fence so the train sound is deafening when they train comes by. read more
