Omg. I came in from CA for work and had just seen the Philly "man vs food", so was on the hunt for this mythical roast pork sandwich. I was way the hell out of the way of dinic's @ the reading terminal market, so I found Nick's old original roast beef, about 75% closer to me. I still haven't been able to try dinic's but Nick's was the best roast beef [saving the pork for tomorrow; beef *was* in the restaurant name after all] sandwich I have ever tasted. the bun is fantastic, the cheese is sooo good and perfectly melted in w/ the beef and the beef is perfectly seasoned... Absolutely delicious. Since it's such a hit w/ local folks, the parking is a bit questionable, esp. with the parking in back so tight. The atmosphere is definitely a 'local' joint and for a newb the menu's a bit sparse on details, but that's just what this place is like. Meh. My coworkers and I ordered about 10 roast beef sandwiches today. I have eaten here in the past. The quality went down considerably. The cheese on my sandwich wasn't even melted. They skimped on the meat and overall it wasn't a very good sandwich. Even the horseradish tasted bland. It added some moisture but barely any heat. Just had the worst experience at Nick's Roast Beef in Springfield. Not the food. The bartender Jeff. We sat at the bar. Took him awhile to acknowledge us as he was having a conversation with the couple across from us. I thought he knew them. No, he introduced himself to them later, but before he acknowledged us. So while we're waiting, hubby and I wiped down the bar area in front of us, because you know, Jeff was busy socializing. Let me say he wasn't busy with others, because there were only 6 of us at the bar. When he got around to us we both ordered Long Island Ice Teas. As he was makimg them he kept stopping to talk to his new friends. As he put them in front of us. Right away I saw that hubby's drink was dark and mine was a medium brown. I took a sip of mine...wow was it sour. I tasted hubby's and his was not as sour. We ordered food to go and when it was done and sitting on the food counter, we asked for the check. He took hubby's credit card, ran it and gave the part to be signed to hubby. Hubby couldn't read it, hubby had me sign it. $37.90 for 2 roast beefs, 2 Long Islands annd a vottle of Bud. I can get pretty loud in there with the jukebox and all the patrons talking but it is a chill place to eat or hang out. Good selection of beers, not too many but good ones. Everything is a la carte, any sides or extras cost money. Still worth it. Yum. Gravy fries are the bomb, you won't want to share. Let me start off by saying the sandwich I received at Nick's was good, but it was lacking some meat. My wife's sandwich was loaded, but mine looked more like a sand-wish rather than the hyped up sandwich I was anticipating. I do honestly believe this was a fluke, and I will be back. Order the old standby whenever I come here .. Beef/overboard/rabe /provolone/roasted long hots- beef gravy fries... Load it up with horseradish .. Messy is an understatement but definitely worth it. My problem with this place might sound stupid but I just can't get past it. The sandwiches, fries, drinks and service are all as good as they should be. My problem is with how things are served. The sandwiches are served on the cheapest smallest paper plates possible. They are just a tiny bit larger than the sandwiches. The plates are like ones you would pick up at a dollar store to serve birthday cake when you didn't have time to go to a real store. The napkins are cheaper than you can imagine. Tissues would almost be better. You are eating a wet sloppy sandwich and these things matter. I used no less than 8 of these tear away napkins when eating the sandwich. If the napkins were just as good as the ones at McDonalds I would have only needed two. This can't be saving them money. I'm not asking for fine china and linen. The sandwich would be better served in a basket with a piece of waxed paper. This has just bothered me. It has been about 10 years between my visits because of this. Again, I realize this is stupid but it just really bothers me and it is an easy fix. read more

This place is a solid casual place to get dinner and/or drinks. Their menu is small and the place does get crowded as does the tiny parking lot, especially on a Friday night around 6:30. I always get the same thing: the roast beef combo (roast beef sandwich with provolone cheese) and the beef gravy fries. I have yet to be disappointed. We went this time with my sister and her bf who also come here often and are huge fans of the mozzarella sticks. My sister is a mozzarella stick snob, so her love of your mozzarella sticks is a very high honor, Nick's. The service is fast and the food is very reasonably priced.
