We ordered this for delivery for lunch on the busy Memorial Day weekend and they had food for 7 to us in under 30 minutes. The food arrived fresh, warm, and delicious. WOW has this place changed!!! For the better. Their Friday night seafood buffet has crab legs, desert a totally well stocked salad bar and all you can eat. Excellent food. The wait staff is cordial, funny, quick and competent, but the food is the star of the show! Prices are excellent with the current "grocery" prices. This used to be what we called "The Trough" like slopping the pigs. Come in with fresh pans of fried chick etc . and just dump it on top of the older dried out chicken, and same thing with the other dishes. The place is cleaner, and the food now actually has some FLAVOR, not just too much salt. Quite an improvement. Soup and salad lunch for just one trip is 7 bucks, and for all you can eat with a very impressive salad bar is 9.99... I am suitably impressed. Lots of windows in the place, so you can watch your vehicle, or the traffic. But the change is just better tasting food and great prices. read more

They ruined a time worn tradition. Nicks has been known for years for their pizza burger. The menu says "traditional " pizza burger. NOT EVEN CLOSE. They cook the onions with some weird spice, over loaded the burger with them and slopped some crappy sauce on it. Why would you mess up a good thing? Disgusting. read more

I was told they had really good pie. The pies did look great. BUT, if you want pie eat it first. I had the French Dip. Huge sandwich. Excellent and very tasty. Fries were real good also. I didn't get any pie. Next time Pie first Sandwich second. The service was also very good. Picture next time. read more

For nearly 40 years Nick's has been an occasional stop for us on the way back from a friend's cabin near Mercer. Over the past decades, the appearance has changed very little if at all. The decor as such could be called utilitarian. The rest rooms could benefit from a renovation. But mitigating the drab surroundings, and despite routine turnover, the staff has consistently been friendly and capable. Regarding the fare, my wife enjoyed the homey, traditional hot beef on bread w/ mashed potatoes and gravy. She found a half order more than satisfying. Son liked the Nick Burger and our daughter the grilled cheese from the "Just for Kids" menu. As they grew older, son moved up to the 1/4 lb cheeseburger and daughter would often opt for a soup & salad combo. Nowadays my trips up and back are generally solo. The other day, another old friend also driving back by himself and I decided to make the trek to Nick's. Over time, my order has never varied. I opt for 1/2 broasted chicken, broasted potatoes and a side of coleslaw. No need this time for novelty. The piping hot chicken was coated in a crispy batter and was moist and flavorful. Potatoes crunchy on the outside and had the consistency of a baked potato on the inside. Slaw was sweet and creamy. I saved room for a slice of tart rhubarb pie topped with whipped cream. Pies in general are worth the extra calories. I often had mine boxed to go. As mentioned, service has always been prompt and accomodating, even in times past when a dozen of us, caravanning back from the lake might have descended all at once. Nick's is a classic family diner. It may have had its ups and downs. But this latest experience confirms it as among the best places to enjoy modestly priced, well prepared comfort food if traveling between Northern Wisconsin and Minneapolis. read more

If you're looking for a great burger, I would highly recommend Nick's. A couple of us had burgers and others had the broasted chicken. I would have given 5 stars had there been a few more beverage options. I like trying local beers when I'm traveling. I know this isn't a bar, it's a family restaurant, but there could be 1 or 2 local area beers on the menu. read more

It was horrible. If 0 stars were a thing, I would give it that. We sat down for 45 minutes and ordered fairly early, we got no refills for water, no check in's, and our food never came. After an hour we got up and left. The inside is also dirty and very outdated. Personally, I do not recommend. read more

This place was really good! The service was great and food was great as well! Definitely better than Spooner Family Restaurant. And they have buffets on Fridays. Only reason I didn't give it 5 out of 5 star rating was because we sat by the window and on the window sill was a bunch of gnats. At least 7 and 3 kept lending on my plate. Barf. Food, yuck. Buffet, yuck. Service, yuck. Restrooms, yuck. I'm shivering just thinking about it. No thanks.

After every breakfast I've had here, I've attempted to analyze exactly what it was about those odd, pre-made omelets from the breakfast buffet that I love so much. They're less than special: thin, small, unseasoned and filled with processed cheese (which I normally loathe). So what is it? Suggestions? Anybody? Because I'm at a loss. Nick's doesn't have the best breakfast in town but it's certainly one of the fastest I've found. It's very filling. The servers are nice. And it's dingy and welcoming. read more

Cute little greasy spoon with some unusual breakfast buffet selections. Green fluff was delicious as was the butterscotch pudding concoction. Eggs were disappointing and dry, french toast was good. But the best thing was the fried chicken. SCORE!! The fry on it wasn't spectacular but the chicken was juicy and tasty. I gave it an extra star just for that. It's difficult not to judge this place from its decor--or lack there of. To the eyes of a city-slicker, the dirty fluorescent lights, standard issue banquet chairs and paper thin walls were a bit of a culture shock. We had heard good things about the place, however, so we decided to stick it out. There is nothing fancy going on here, but that's not why people come. They come for the kind, attentive servers who are only to happy to chat about local events, explain the menu (we actually overheard an elderly patron ask what a quesadilla was--sounds terrifying!), and bring you a pitcher of water if you've been out in the sun too long. I decided to go with the "broasted chicken," which was proclaimed to be "famous" on the town's website. I was expecting something soggy, rubbery or dry but what I got was a golden brown, crispy chicken breast and wing loaded with flavor and moist as can be. The fame was well-deserved. I opted for the spicy potato wedges and coleslaw and it was all quite satisfying. The wife's chimichanga was about what you would expect for a small-town diner--unexciting, but huge and edible. It was a disappointment that they just emptied the crumbs from a bag of corn chips onto the plate rather than open up a fresh bag, but it's not exactly the Ritz, so we shrugged it off. Overall, dinner was very satisfying, especially given the price-to-portion ratio. We opted to take some dessert to go. After seeing the table next to us order some strawberry shortcakes that were piled high with whipped cream and strawberries, I was tempted to get that, but we went with the chocolate mint pie. A bit pricey at $4, but well worth it. Featuring a chocolate cookie crust, topped with a layer of french silk mousse, mint mouse and chocolate whipped cream, I could have eaten a whole pie in a sitting. Good thing we were miles away when we finally tucked into it or I would have! read more

Went in for an early dinner. There was only one other table occupied. The server seemed more interested in chatting with them than giving me a menu, taking my order, delivering my food, or offering me a refill. Food was average and a little greasy. Stopped in for dinner. BBQ ribs were good, Everything omelet-egg was very thin, used processed cheese slices. Breasted chicken was tasty. With dinner, only offered 1 side, although menu suggested 2-soup, salad or Cole slaw; choice of potato. Waitress said only one choice. Dinner salad was like half a head of iceberg, 3 large onion ring slices, and tomato chunks. When the bill came, it had "no potato" noted with dinner entrees, as though we opted for not having potato, even though we had selected baked potato to go with salad and entree. read more

Stopped here on a road trip, and first thing: don't stop here if you don't have much time. It's a seat yourself place and at lunch time, the waitresses seemed hurried, distracted, and flustered--but, friendly nonetheless. It took about 10 minutes for them to come by with the menus, and another 15 after that to take our orders. From there it was about 20 minutes to get our BLT and omelette. Friendly service but nothing to write home about, same for the food. Interior was the average small town sorta shtick. Overall it was fine but not great. Would stop by again, but not if I was in a hurry. read more

we are from the cities, and on our way up to the cabin we stopped at this restaurant to get food. it was very delicious, better than most of the cafes in minneapolis. service was very quick and the employees were very nice. best french toast i've ever had, and i love perkins. but this restaurant puts perkins to shame. i will be driving 3 hours from minneapolis just to eat here! read more

Ah Nick's... Let's just say this place is a family tradition for me. It started with my Grandparents, My mother and uncle and then my father when he joined the family. Needless to say I was introduced to Nick's "Pizzaburger" at a young age. At first I resisted... But at about 13 years of age I fell in love with them. They've changed over the years and you won't get the pizza burger of 15-20 years ago today but they are still mighty fine! The decor is pretty basic and dated, there is some outdoor art on the walls. The wait staff is always friendly, fast. And even though I never get anything but Pizzaburgers when I go there the menu is very complete. I know they have a buffet style dinner that is quite popular and the prices aren't the lowest but they are reasonable. read more

Awful! Went there with my son and had the Mexican buffet. My son had tacos and the first thing he said was Yuck! I had the ribs and they were dry and so tuff I could hardly chew them. I do not recommend eating here at all. I left thinking that was the worst meal I have ever had and what a wast of money. Should have gone to DQ! read more

I stopped at Nick's on my way to a funeral, stopped at about 145pm. I found the place to be very nice, clean, quiet, except what I mention later. I was looking for a local mom and pop type of place, non chain. I was promptly waited on with a menu and glass of water. I was served coffee, and ordered a Hot Beef sandwich. It came promptly, was hot, lots of gravy, REAL mashed potatoes, must of had 3/4 lb of beef. It was DELICIOUS, I would definitely order it again. The help was courteous, attentive, prices I would say are reasonable, About the only couple of complaints I would have were. The sandwich was so hot I could hardly eat it, but that was fine, I'm just mentioning it, as I like hot food hot, and cold food cold, unlike McDonalds were everything is lukewarm. The most annoying thing was a couple of young ladies came in and were talking to someone in the kitchen, and everyone in the restaurant knew what they were talking about, minor but they could have not talked across the restaurant. All in all I would stop there again, if in the Spooner area. read more

We went for breakfast and were not impressed. The food wasn't great and the service was mediocre at best. I had french toast which was so cool the butter wouldn't melt on it and it was chewy. Not the best flavor either. My husband's skillet was mediocre. The vegetables weren't fully cooked and were still a bit crunchy. I would suggest trying a different restaurant to get a filling and tasty breakfast. read more

Tried this place for lunch because we'd heard the broasted chicken was great. I had broasted chicken and rib combo, hubby had roast beef commercial type thing with mashed potatoes and gravy and bread. Definitely seems like a place for shall we say the older crowd. So if you order a soft drink the glasses aren't that big and you are allowed ONE refill. For our dinner, the food is definitely just your basic bland small town cafe food, nothing to write home about. And broasted chicken? I don't think that word means what they think it means - if that was broasted chicken they have a really odd recipe. Seemed kinda like baked chicken to me. Or something. And for my ribs I was having a heck of a time eating them and my husband tried them and said the problem was they didn't take the membrane off - which apparently is step one of anyone who makes ribs because otherwise they are super hard to get the meat. Again, your basic ribs with some kind of generic store-bought BBQ sauce. The best thing was the mashed potatoes, they were real. It was interesting to try but I don't think we'll be back. Seemed kinda pricey for what we got. Server was nice. Maybe their breakfasts are good. read more
