My time spent here was exceptional! The people were really nice and on top of any request we had. It felt like we were welcome here, not like other smaller places where you feel the same five locals are there every morning for their coffee and stare at you when you walk in. Wow outstanding place. Stopped in for breakfast for first time visit and impressed as soon as we walked in the door. Cute old fashion building and furnishings and a warm welcome from the waitress as soon as we walked in. Surprised again to find out they serve screw drivers which we quickly ordered and wow they were fresh and just the right amount of strong. Ordered breakfast had Nicks Mess skillet and just wow, it was so tasty and plentiful. This is a true gem in a small town. Will definitely come back next time in town. read more

I'll drop a four star here. Great little diner right downtown and perfect for our breakfast today. I was in no rush at all so the 40-45 min wait for my meal was no big deal but I'd have to remove one star for that. However, not being in a rush meant I could enjoy this place while sipping on our own pot of coffee (nice). From the decor to the 50s music filling in the background, this place was an enjoyable stop while in town. They offer a nice, interesting breakfast assortment (wish we could have tried other things) but we ended up with the blueberry pancakes and the biscuit and gravy plate and they were very good. Service was very friendly and we left full and happy. Again the only drop in star was just how long it took - it didn't ruin our visit one bit but worth mentioning. We will be back in a few weeks when we come back through town....this time for lunch. For sure, give this place a try! read more

My brother and I stopped Nick's Diner for breakfast last time I was in Minnesota. It's a great stop on the way to the MSP airport. Nick's not only has great breakfasts but great servers too! Nick's fun decor is consistent with the rural, small town location and the staff is very friendly staff (Ashley was terrific and attentive). The menu was ok and there were also a couple of daily specials offered. There was also a good selection of what appeared to be fresh pies but none were served during my visit. I went with the pulled pork special which was a 2 star choice at best. I doubt it was prepared at the restaurant other than possibly adding some BBQ sauce so it was a disappointment. Nick's attracts a nice mix of locals and tourists but on my visit bicyclists (the really sweaty type) dominated the crowd. The restroom was as clean as it probably could have been after the bikers "freshen up" prior to having something to eat. While I understand the positive financial impact the cyclists likely have on the business, it doesn't mean I enjoy their "olfactory" impact on a visit to Nick's. Make up your own mind. read more

Have eaten here many times while in town for work. The beef and mash, turkey and mash and corned beef hash at breakfast were the dishes I sampled and all were excellent. Stopped in on a Sunday Morning at 7:30. They have "Covid" hours. They DO NOT OPEN AT 7:00 as stated here. Their open hours are 8:00am. That being said, I had a skillet breakfast with the spicy potatoes and scrambled eggs. It was a large portion and it was very good. Service was perfect. Just enough attention but not too much. Wonderful little diner in Cannon Falls. We ate in the patio with a nice little breeze. Great menu and the waitstaff were very friendly. I tried the short rib grilled cheese. It was awesome. Fries were crispy and the chili I had was decent (although I participate and win in a variety of competition chili cook offs . . . My bar for chili is high. My wife had a very nice burger and an amazing concoction called Fried Potato salad. They also have homemade pies that you can buy by the pie or by the slice. Cool place. read more

Size Matters or If I Ran the Zoo Granted, we arrived at a busy time - Sunday morning - and even busier because this was the only game in town serving full breakfast. We waited about 20 minutes for a table, which is perfectly acceptable. We understand. Things went downhill from there. First, I asked for a cup of half decaf and half hot water (I know, I know -- I only drink it in restaurants because it's hard to get a nice cup of tea in a restaurant,) The coffee arrived sans water. When I politely requested the water, the server returned with a single-serving creamer pitcher half-full of fairly hot water. Tiny, and certainly far less than half a cup. 30 minutes later she returned to take our orders. The other three ordered full breakfasts, I ordered oatmeal. 65 minutes later our breakfast arrived (we have now been here for nearly two hours),well, except for my oatmeal. That took another 10 minutes, and it arrived completely naked without any accompanying liquid. When I asked if I could get some milk for it, the server gave me a weird look, walked away, and returned with a full glass of milk. I was confused. Wasn't the milk supposed to go in the creamer pitcher? And wasn't there supposed to be at least a small pot of hot water for my coffee/tea? One of us is a chef and has worked in many kinds of restaurants from the diners to the toniest-the-tony. He understood the dilemma of trying to accommodate so many in such a short time. I had the feeling that he would like to have gone to the kitchen and straighten things out; I held him back. The major problem with that restaurant isn't with the food, which is just fine. The problem has always been (I've been there many times, even before Barack Obama visited. Oh, and they removed all traces of that visit. What's up with that?) lack of organization and communication. We were passing through Minnesota and had growling stomachs. Off of 52 we found a small town called Cannon Falls. The town reminded us of a small town they film movies at and the diner was just as pleasing. It was a full house with locals but not a loud noisy atmosphere you would expect, it was a peaceful chatter. The food we ordered was extremely phenomenal. They must use rosemary or special herbs in their award winning sausage gravy that makes it understandably a true winner. The English muffins were perfectly toasted to deliciousness. They also sold pies at the front counter that made even myself want a slice ( I hate sweets). The only complaint I have is the bathroom situation. They only have one bathroom for all but the door has a giant frosted window like the old school newspaper office doors. It was extremely uncomfortable to see silhouettes waiting to use the bathroom. Waited 15 minutes to sit on a Sunday, completely acceptable. After being seated we were able to watch several other tables get seated. Tables of 4 and 5, there was just two of us. Then we proceeded to sit there and watch the tables that were seated after us get their orders taken. Next a wait person came over and sheepishly asked if we had been helped because, clearly we had not. Then she very sheepishly let us know that Darla would be with us as soon as possible . We assumed Darla must be in the back. Well as is turns out we were watching Darla seat and take all these other tables orders... Then after 20 minutes of sitting there Darla comes over and says "Just a heads up your food will take at least 45 minutes." Apparently, if you don't know Darla you are not welcome at Nick's??? Return visit update: Not as good on our second visit here with these owners. There were three of us and the service was mediocre at best. The ice tea was undrinkable. One had a burger and it was OK as was the pulled pork sandwich again. However the chicken salad was pretty bad--all of it: the meat, the lettuce and the salad dressing. The overall experience this time was not as good as our previous visit. How disappointing. Average it with the first visit and you get three stars. I am in no hurry to go back. Cannot dine here enough and here are a 5 reasons why: 1) The service is exceptional. The gals are so friendly and right on top of things. The place is always clean and the staff is always smiling so they must be treated right. 2) The food is outstanding. Down home cooking with no shortcooks. Everything cooked fresh right there on site. You sometimes have to wait because this place gets busy but the food is worth it. I don't know what they cook their hashbrowns in but I could eat them by the pound. 3) The owner Chris, walks around and meets his patrons. He also works there and there is nothing more humbling or respectful than that. He named the diner after his son, which is sweet. I like doing business in a small town with locally families, something feels right and genuine about that. 4) The cafe feel and the low prices are consistent with this area and the expectations of those looking for an old school diner experience. Where else can you get coffee for a buck nowadays and homemade pie. 5) Best coffee ever. Tops starbucks and I'm a starbucks lover so that says a lot. I'm drinking a starbucks as I write this. They go through Tru Stone roasters, a twin cities company and I cannot get enough of them. Way to keep the money in MN! Located in downtown Cannon Falls and close to everything, I'd encourage everyone to pop on in and visit! Have eaten there twice. Summer 2014 and just a few days ago, June 2015. On both occasions there were some house flies which makes me worry what the kitchen might be like. Service was about 40 minutes after we ordered, but it was not overly crowded even though the waitress said she would push our order. Food ok but had to use napkin to cover the drink so the flies wouldn't visit. Same thing with the pancakes-- cover them mostly and eat from one side to the other. Almost no vegetarian selection, hence the pancake order. You might not want to eat there other than Winter. read more
